If you haven't picked them up yet, I'd recommend Magellan over Cairo.
They have a little more complex style, with great rhythms and melodies. Both
have a lot of keyboards, but Magellan has a better mix of guitar and keys,
    IMHO.
I like both bands, but I especially love Magellan.

P.S. I'm pretty sure Emusic (http://emusic.com) and CDnow both have
Cairo and Magellan and the other Magna Carta bands. Under the
music section of my home page (see my .sig) I list a number
of online music stores you can order from.

    Hi all!!

There is a NEW UPDATE on the CDs (whew!) That I will be more than happy to e-mail to you myself, and I think I already dispatched a copy to Jeff Chew for the Shadows page. It'll be posted on alt.music.dream-theater later today.

Thanks to EVERYONE for the cool birthday wishes, this is even better than last year, I was flooded with mail on it. :) And so I enter my 22nd year.. a year in which nothing really changes from when I was 21.

I was arguing with Bafu a little while ago and he brought up an interesting point: that I really haven't had anything creative to say to the Jam in some time. I remember that I used to be that way, but when I began making CDs I just turned my attention to that. I'm afraid I have to agree with Bafu, and though I don't have a great deal to say yet (I'll think of some good stuff) I _do_ have some contributions to make to some of the recent threads.

First of all, for the covers project... anyone can feel free to do any of the songs anyone else was doing... part of the beauty of this sort of project is the multiple interpretations of the songs. I encourage anyone to also submit the same songs I and the guys here in Arizona were planning on doing.

Galactic Cowboys... now here's a band that if I could wish success upon, I would. They're making music with a flavor all their own, yet with a style we already understand. Unfortunately, I think their music might only work for those of us in certain regions and with certain subcultures. I and the rest here in AZ like them, and I know they have a huge fan base in Texas. But when I brought GC material to New York for the Con last Christmas, few were impressed. Go figure! I think the Cowboys' new album Machine Fish is the most mature release by them yet, with songs that have more depth and age better than in previous releases. I thought the same about Space In Your Face when it came out; truly GC is developing steadily as a band. The new album also conveys the frustrations of the band on several levels, which I like. It reminds me of the fury of 1975-1976 Rush. The GC still have the best vocal harmony work I've heard overall, consistently from song to song, which ties in to the next subject..

...if Alanis can reproduce those keen vocal harmonies from Ironic in a non-studio setting without outtakes and overdubs, THEN I will be impressed. She was a corporate shell as Tiffany, and she's a corporate shell now. The only difference is that corporate cheese music has changed from bop to angst in the years between. I _want_ to like her since she's a female artist with a great voice and a slightly harsh tone, which is something I like about Tori Amos and the Cranberries (or at least their lead singer). But I can't escape the feeling that it's all so "planned", so unrealistic, so force-fed. All my opinion. Which brings me to...

...Alternative music in general. One of the best things in my opinion to happen in years was the emergence of +Live+, the closest thing there is to a combination of progressive and alternative. Forget the hit singles and Chad Taylor's simplistic guitar, it's Chad Gracey's drums and especially Pat Dahlheimer's killer bass that makes this band work best. The pinnacles of +Live+'s efforts in my opinion are Vicious Crowd and 10000 Years from Mental Jewelry, and Pillar of Davidson and White Discussion from Throwing Copper. Their earliest effort, Public Affection's Death of a Dictionary, sports some interesting bass work, but is largely forgettable as a REM-type spinoff. The true test of +Live+ will be if they are able to continue to make original, exciting, and worthwhile music without burnout, on their next album. Speaking of new albums, what's with the Stone Temple Pilots' new album??? It sucks! I can't believe it. I was so impressed with Purple, that STP finally broke the Pearl Jam mold, and now I find out it was because they found a better mold... the Beatles. Ack. "Tiny Music" would have been better if the Bullshit had been tiny as well. And about The Beatles. I know they're supposed to be the fathers of all pop music and thus all rock, and we're all supposed to like them, but am I alone in saying they suck? I mean, their songs are all so trite and contrived, swaying from simplistic to silly without a worthwhile thought in between. And their riffs and chops are so basic, they're taught to beginners nowadays. About the only album I was _briefly_ able to stomach was the Sgt. Pepper album, and that only because I dug some of the lyrics. Hearing them played almost ruined my near-favourable impression. And Oasis is just a cheap corporate attempt to re-create the Beatles, and anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. :)

I am a happy guy because my birthday has meant the annual gifts of laserdiscs from the girlfriend, friends, and family. Melissa picked up the Aristocats LD for me, which is decent enough I guess. Of course the Disney LD I _really_ want is The Black Cauldron! (grin) Some buddies chipped in and got me the Criterion edition of SEVEN, and it's incredible. I liked the film in the theater, I like it even better on CAV LD with an alternate ending! :) (oh yes, in the alternate ending, Somerset (Freeman) kills John Doe instead of having Mills (Pitt) do it. He figures that by killing Doe just as he's retiring, Doe will be punished and Mills can continue his career without facing charges, and with Mills' wife the way she was at the end of the movie, that was a pretty good idea. :) And my parents picked up Rob Roy for me on LD, which is awesome in the same way Braveheart is. Anyone who's not rented this because it looked cheesy... trust me, it's worth your time.

Well, that's about all I have to say for now...

The bootleg is from the actual show. James' patter b/t songs is the same, the entire audience sounds like they're there, all the special guests are introduced and play their individual songs. It's also highly unlikely that James would be so mediocre in rehearsal and then be so stunning 45 minutes later. He says at one point "Hey, give us a break, we just found out about this gig 4 hours ago," or something to that effect. So I have to conclude that the stuff was just edited. :(

I'm always happy with bootlegs. Their January 24, 1995 show is the worst I've ever heard James (I bleeve he was sick) and I still love it. I have many and the shows are rarely, if ever, perfect. I'd much prefer to have the honest work of the band rather than an overdub thrown together in several takes in a studio. My problem isn't that James' wasn't stellar that night, it's that "Uncovered" is not a truly live set on ACOS. I'm listening to the original "Big Medley" and it's much different that what we hear on ACOS. James is, honestly, dismal, but if he was poor that night they simply shouldn't release it. I still like it, blemishes and all, but it's evident that LaBrie and Petrucci, at least, went into the studio and cleaned it up. I don't think that's any longer in debate (and I'm kinda sorry I got this tape and brought it up as it kinda "Used My Illusion"). :)

To all those that requested copies of this bootleg: I got about two dozen requests for this show and I regret to say that I just don't have time to copy it for everyone. I apologize..

I haven't an opinion either way on this, but...... Is it more impressive to be able to go off on amazing musical tangents in the during a show, or or to be able to recreate amazing music originally created with lots of time, lots of takes, if necessary, and a producer at your side.....maybe i have formed an opinion.....then again, maybe I have't been to enough concerts........
