Radio has never been about the music. Stations only play what
sells so that their advertisers' commercials are run while people are
listening.
This is the reason why prog doesn't fair well on radio, the
length of the tracks makes it impossible for ads to be run with any
frequency. Of course, people who listen to prog are not going to
listen to the commercial for Nuprin anyway. :)

So did *I*, when I subscribed on November 24th last year... Thought it
would be a cool way to talk about one of my favourite bands with other
Dream Theater fans... Oh well...

He forgot to mention all those flamewars... There's also an occasional
flamewar on the Marillion-list, but at least they're almost always on
topic...

Personally, I've been skipping posts (up to 90%) for weeks, if not
months... They only reason I keep those jams on my harddrive is because
of that most frequent poster list of mine...

You're welcome...
Oh yeah, that mark peters guy giving Alan the finger made me feel
*sooo* proud to be an Ytsejammer... NOT ! Grow up...
Does anyone know when we can expect that Voices-list ? I'm really
looking forward to a moderated version of the Jam... I like the idea
of getting ONE flame-free DTC-digest a week better than those 2-3
YtseSpams a day...

I've only heard one song by King's X (Black Flag), but I hear a lot about
them on this list and from other DT - sources. Could you give me a brief
synopsis of the band, tell me about their style, recommend an album to me,
etc.? I live about an hour from Houston, and since so few good bands come
around, I'd hate to miss this once - in - a - lifetime show on Sep 1. I'm
just trying to decide whether or not to make plans to go. Thanx for
anyone's input.

"Fluked out" - I love it! The malleability of the English language is a wonderful thing. (No, Mark, this is NOT a flame - it's more of a compliment). 'Course if everybody is saying "fluked out" these days and this is the first time I've heard it, then I'm just a giant dork.

Folks- First, a BIG thank you to everybody that has sent me ideas for the faq. I'm working on them as fast as I can. (Of course, it being almost 2:00 in the afternoon on Saturday, I just woke up, but...)
Anyway, what I wanted to say is this: The DT faq represents this list. It is a collection of knowledge, trivia, and humor that we, the YtseJammers have compiled in one place for the world to refer to. It's your list. *ALL* ideas for things I should add, things I should remove, things I should change, etc, are greatly appreciated. Keep 'em coming!
Right now, the faq is only available on my server (see below), but, starting Monday or Tuesday, will be available from Lifting Shadows and some other mirror sites. Txt versions will also be available soon.

The show last night in DC was great. Hopefully tonight in Pasadena will be even better. I was somewhat disappointed by the fact that KX played damn near every song from Ear Candy (my least favorite) but it was to be expected. The tunes they played from Gretchen (my favorite) were so cool I can't put words to it. (Summerland, Over My Head, Pleiades(sp)) Only one song from Dogman and none from Silent Planet was mildly disappointing, but no Kings X show could be termed "disappointing." I wish they would skip the cover and add one from Planet like King or something. Oh well. Cowboys rocked, too. High point for me was "If I were a Killer" I'll be there again tonight. Hope to see some/any of you there. I'll be the dude in the Red Wings jersey up front :-) -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) GO PACKERS...GO WINGS!!!

I'm sure that this has already been discussed in the past and that most of you are already aware of it but as I was taking a glance to the cover of my ACOS cd , it hit me. The meaning of the flower in the snow , "Winter Rose" , LaBrie's old band. Pretty interesting concept , anyways I just wanted to bring some DT content into the jam.

Woooh, doggy, am I "Jammed" up with back issues... Aaanyway, in issue #1657 (which I am now currently in the pro-cess of reading - what, I went camping!), our esteemed Skadz had this to say...

Here, here. I agree, but hesitantly ask a question: are these mix tapes still available? My reasoning? Well, it goes a little somethin' like this... (hit it, boys) - I haven't heard most of these bands (all right, all) - I like the progmetal that I've heard (the more widely known (Ha!) stuff, such as DT, QR, etc.) - Therefore, I would probably like at least some of these bands - I have money to buy CDs now that I have a job - But, I don't have a lot of money, as this job is cashier at a local supermarket - Therefore, I *can* buy CDs, but not a lot of CDs - There are billions of CDs out there - I like a good many (approx. 1.5% of billions) of these CDs - Therefore, I have other CDs which I could purchase of artists I know - I don't have the money to buy experimental CDs (that is, CDs I'm not sure I'd like) - I'm certainly more likely to get into bands that I've heard (though I have taken stabs in the dark, DT for instance! or that unfortunate brother (RIP) of mine...)
Big Conclusion: (drumroll) I could really use a mix tape.
I'm willing to go for postage, cost of tape, et cetera... If there's any kind souls willing to do a prog-rookie a favor, well, it'd be very, uh, very kind, as well as much appreciated. Thanks in advance?

yeah, but i hear that sam taylor was *very* narrow-minded on how to produce. it was *his* way, or no way. that's why all three wylde silas bands (KX, GC, atomic opera) are not with him any longer. sam would tell KX how the album would be, even if KX didn't want it to be that way. he would also get mad if people tried to do his job of producing...alan said that was a reason why he's glad GC's no longer with sam (b/c now he can produce their albums like they want 'em to be)...

you something funny, i listened to an album i hadn't really listened to all that much lately. it's a pretty good album i think y'all punkasses know- it's called "images and words." it's kinda funny how something sounds very different after months away from it. as some of you know, i am like a mad hater of songs like "surrounded" and "ttt", and after yesterday, i actually LIKED them!! they were actually GOOD to me. it sounded FRESH. i can't wait to throw on "awake" and make similar observations.
but i still don't understand why those above-mentioned songs are so popular.......
in other prog news, i heard on the elp newsletter that the elp song "still you turn me on" is on the new guitar magazine transcribed (i'm guessing "guitar player").
was i the only numbskull at the petrucci clinic who recognized "little wing"?? that was pretty sick....

doug recently said in the metal edge interview that they are all going to be keeping busy. doug's got some side projects, and ty does computer stuff and some record and video producing. he said that he has so much music in his head, that he's got to let out. he's planning on doing stuff with other people, but still planning on doing stuff with KX. i assume they'll just take a break for a while after their tour, and then look for a label later down the road...

Just my personal opinion, but I have to disagree here... Of Rage and War is a pretty decent song and for the most part Jon Oliva does s a very fine job on the whole Gutter Ballet album... Gutter Ballet and Streets are two of my favorite 'Tage albums just because of the raw energy some of those songs had. The stuff with Zak just presents a more refined, operatic, triumphant style of music than the Jon albums... not necessarily better, but different.
I will say this though: IMO the two songs on Dead Winter Dead that Jon sings aren't that great... and also IMO Zak really is a much better singer than Jon... but, the material on Gutter Ballet and Streets is just so powerful in terms of emothion that I can forgive Jon's scratchiness and even think it fits pretty decent.
> EOT is very cool. Probably not quite as good as HOR, but with > better vocals. GB was extremely disappointing, though.
Edge of Thorns and Handful of Rain are both *very* good albums, and everyone should rush out and buy them... :) But I think Gutter Ballet and Streets are probably my favorites if I had to pick.
> I usually enjoy music for the intrumentation, but I just can't ignore > vox that bad. I'm glad he quit.
Definitely have to disagree here... Sepultura or Death might turn you off because of vocals, but Jon Oliva can definitely hold his own... And Jon didn't really quit... Savatage is really still his band. What I heard (take this at face value only, not as 100% true) is that because of some bad management Jon isn't legally allowed to be in Savatage... even though he writes/co-writes pretty much all the music, plays most of the keys, still does shows with the band, etc... Jon Oliva *is* Savatage from what I can tell...
> I wish Alek Skolnik would come back. Maybe Exhibition A > (his other band) will be good if they ever get signed.
True, Alex did a very good job on HOR... but the new guys for Dead Winter Dead are quite capable guitarists as well...
Now, if only Savatage will stop in Arkansas on their tour, I'll be a happy camper... I can't imagine just _how_ cool it would be to hear them due 'Chance' with all 5 vocal parts...
