Hey,
Cool story. I was at work today (Sam Goody) and I had to place a
buy from a one-stop (a company that provides music media to retailer for
the who's at home)
Anyway, I called the guy up and started placing my order when I
got distracted buy something in the background. This guy was jammin'
"Awake" at work.
So I mention it to him and we start talking about DT. Then I get
back to placing the order and "The Mirror" comes on and we both started
singing it! It was way cool.
So I ask him if he is on the Ytsejam. He said he had heard of it
and was thinking of signing up, so I gave him the address and told him
about it (the good, the bad, the ugly) and he's going to do it.
I just thought that was way cool.
On a sidenote, I picked up Jason Becker's "Perspective" today. If
you like music, get this album. Not because he's got ALS, but because
this album is great musically. It's got everything from New Age to Rock,
Country to Movie Scores to Classical. It is a fine addition to my
collection.

Actually in a Guitar World around after Awake came out there was a huge
interview with the two Johns! Myung talks a lot too! They talk about
progressive and how it fits in with pop and a lot about Awake and
musicianship, it's actually a really good interview considering Guitar

WOO HOO!!
I saw Pantera live for the first time last night. It is probably the best
concert on the market these days.(You have to take into account that I
haven't seen DT live yet) Here's how the show went.
OPENER - EYEHATEGOD
They were ok for the most part. Some really intense music yet really
repetative. Basically the epitome of modern metal. They're amps seemed
dwarfed by the grandeur of Red Rocks. THEY seemed dwarfed, because they
seemed to stay really close to eachother in the center of the stage. The
coolest thing was during their set, Phil was headbanging and having a grand
old moshing time on the side of the stage.
BETWEEN ACTS - WHILE WHITE ZOMBIE IS SETTING UP
Me and my friend were trying to either get backstage or get a tape of my
band backstage to be given to Pantera. I finally got someone to get the
tape back and give it to Dimebag. While waiting around the backstage
entrance we get to hear all these horror stories about how Pantera left the
show the night before in a tiff and wouldn't talk to anyone.
FIRST HEADLINER - WHITE ZOMBIE
Man, was I dissapointed. They're whole show was just about as entertaining
as watching MTV. I expected the music to sound somewhat, well, Live! All
the songs sounded like the album. What's the fun in that? Granted, the one
spontaneous thing was Rob running out of breath all the time. "More human
than...GASP GASP...Sing it people!!" He also got two or three beats off
during the chorus of Super Charger Heaven. I also think these guys are too
caught up in themselves to give a shit about the fans.
SECOND HEADLINER - PPPPPAAAANNNNTTTTEEEERRRRAAAA!!!!
What can I say, Pantera are the kings of metal. (DT is still the king of
prog metal) They opened with the two Suicide Note songs then went into War
Nerve. By this time I'd realized why I'd wasted all my time and money. The
show was great, life was good. The crowd was a wholloping sold out 10,000
people, and everyone is screaming every word, weather they know it or not.
Halfway through Walk Phil stopped the song to get a camera out to tape us
singing. His direct quote was "I have never seen a crowd sing Walk like
that before in my entire fucking life." After playing A New Level, Fucking
Hostile, and This Love, Phil stopped to have a little talk with us. He said
that the show the night before sucked, and that the whole band was just
pissed off because of all the things that have been happening to the band
lately. So, they took a handfull of mushrooms and roamed the mountains all
night. He said that they have a whole new outlook on things, and that they
are the new kings of metal now that Metallica pussed out. They kicked ass
the rest of the night, and by the time the police were kicking them off the
stage because it was too late, Phil got down on his knees and worshiped us,
because we had been the best crowd of the whole tour. People I met who had
been there for the last few shows said that Phil hasn't said that to anyone yet.
Well, I don't have too many gripes, except that I didn't get to meet the
band, and they didn't play Cemetery Gates. That might have been for the
better, because all the slow material they played lagged in tempo. Their
forte is in the crunch. Other than that I was impressed by the mellow
stuff, because Phil can sing just like he used to. The screaming has done
little or nothing to his voice. Unlike Rob Zombie, Phil can sing everything
that's on the albums. I guess my only gripe is that they didn't play long
enough. Only three or four songs from each album.
Damn, they were good.
Later,
Cory

How is the label able to just "drop" them from a deal? Isn't that what
"deal" means? We pay you, you make music? What am I missing here?
Anyone care to fill me in on this? I mean, this is a contract, right?
What gives Atlantic the power to just say "You're done"?

That's cool as hell. Leave it to DT to think up something that clever.
Alas, my CD doesn't have that - it's the normal order.

[Dan T. inquired about King's X's record deal]
No, it was a 14-record deal, no lie. When Doug said that, we were ALL
floored. They may HAVE thought K'sX was the next Rush or something;
as Doug put it, "they throw a record at the wall [with minimal
promotion] and see if it sticks. For us, 'It's Love' stuck a little,
but...." As for why Atlantic didn't promote a 14-record band more,
well.... I doubt they EVER had any intention of completing that
contract.
[Brian Cox corrected me....]
Ooops! I discovered I was wrong today. For some reason that song
strikes me as a very Who/"Tommy"-ish song -- and not Grank Funk. Wow,
my bad. Now I need to call the guys in EW and revise my at-show
comments. :)
Brian, which show were you at, if any? I don't remember seeing you
here.... Didja catch 'em in Nashville? Did you, uh, preserve them
in all their glory for us? :)

Someone inquired about King's X touring out in California (or maybe it
was "West Coast"). A fan asked Doug about this, and he was
noncommittal. Which might be bad news, but at least it wasn't a
definite "no."
This is a really no-frills tour, BTW. Doug mentioned that, here at
least, due to the Olympic Games they didn't even bother getting a
hotel room (either all full or way too overpriced), and just stayed on
the tour bus, showering at the venue (which, if you know Atlanta's
Masquerade, is a sobering thought indeed). Both bands are traveling
on one bus, too.
I spoke to a Brazilian fan now living in Atlanta -- really cool -- who
asked about the Ytsejam (he knew of it, but wasn't on it) at the show.
Like an idiot I forgot to ask him his name, didn't give him mine, and
didn't give him my email address, although I -did- give him the
subscription info for Ytsejam. If you're out there, give me a yell
and let me know you subscribed successfully, dude!

Here Here!!! I was wondering if I was the only one who would notice that. I
just want to say one last thing before going back to my corner. I've noticed
a LOT of posts recently that seem to be nothing more than attempts to keep
their name on each and every jam. I'll admit, I've been a little vocal
lately myself, but I sit down at work sometimes and read gobs of these in one
day to catch up, and I'd say a good third of the posts are just assorted
people posting assorted BS that has nothing to do with anything but their own
little flame war, or trying to start one with everyone else's post. This
REALLY stands out if you read 10-20 of these things at once.
I think this boils down to that list that gets generated every month; the one
with how many times someone posted, who posted the most, who got the most
EOJ's, etc... Some people insist on making this list some sort of
competition. I just want to say that if I were to complain about anything
here, this would be it. An occasional small flame war or off topic thread is
no problem with me; keeps things changing, but these frequent posts that do
nothing but jump all over others' posts, thats another story (yeah yeah, I
know I am asking for it, but I could not hold it back any longer). The only
reason I can see for some of them to do this is to keep their name 'in the
spotlight'.
===And now, for something COMPLETELY different====
I may be interested in Prog night this month, can someone e-mail me some
specifics (bands, times, location, drink prices ,etc...)
That's all. I know I may be guilty of what I just complained about here, but
the whole point is a little bit of BS from anyone is OK, but a LOT of BS from
anyone...that's annoying.

Greetings all:
Sad news from the city of Berkeley. I am sad to say that the
drummer for Primus has parted ways with his bandmates. Here's the article
from the San Francisco Chronicle sunday paper.
PRIMUS CUT
Drummer Tim Alexander and Primus have parted ways, citing divergent
musical directions. The highly skilled drummer (what an understatement)
has belonged to the popular metal-thrash band since the group's 1989
debut album, "Suck on This." Primus will start recording a new album with
a replacement drummer in December.
"It's something the three of us have discussed for a while,"
bassist/vocalist Les Claypool said. "We all want to take the music in a
different direction. Unfortunately for Tim, Larry Lalonde and I tend to
want similar things creatively. After the last touring season it was
evident to all of us that something needed to change."
That's it guys..... Sorry to be the bringer of such bad news.

As I mentioned a while back, I've decided to convert what was going to be
the Mytsecon T-shirt (until that went up in smoke) into a Ytsejam
t-shirt, to be done a bit later in the year. I noticed that Scotch (I
think) said he would do one, but I would appriciate the chance, since
I've already put a lot of time into the project.
The shirts will not be printed until later this year. I will take a bit
more time to tweek the design, and just improve it. Also, I want to give
it a few months after the fall semester starts, and we have a new batch
of impressionable young college students with free email accounts who
haven't figured out yet that they should save every penny when they're
away from mom and dad. :)
The design will be essencially the same (with the exception of the back
design) as the Mytsecon shirts I already had ready to go to the printer.
There is a page on my account with those shirts. It's the same front
design (an incredible rendered image by Chris (forgot his last name at
the moment) up in Washington), and the back design will be altered to a
Ytsejam shirt, instead of a Mytsecon one. I'm way too busy to update the
page now though, so just use your imaginations until I get the time to
redo the back graphic. :)
Because of the color separations and graphic I'm using, these shirts will
cost a bit to run... I would imagine the cost for you shouldn't be more
than $16-20 + S&H, which is a normal price for shirts (and less than a
concert T :). I just won't make any profit off of this, which is ok,
because this is a project I have wanted to do for some time now.
I'm thinking of running 150 copies of the shirt, which should be enough,
but I will run more if there is enough interest. The only thing is that
I will need to take pre-orders in order to get the capital to have them
printed to begin with. I'll give you all more info once the ball gets
rolling, and then I'll start accepting checks and MOs. Those will be
cashed the day before printing starts, and you should have your shirts
approximately one month after that (2 weeks for printing, 2 for shipping).
I hope to be able to get these done before YtseCon III, so I can peddle
them there, and give the free ones to the band in person. :) As I said,
I'll give more info when the time comes.
Until then, you can check out the design-in-progress at:
http://www.missouri.edu/~c675311/mytsecon.html
Please email me any comments and/or suggestions. Also, feel free to
check out my home page (due for major renovation this fall), and the
other shirt I have printed (NDTC :), which is also availible for sale (I
have about 25 or so left) at:
http://www.missouri.edu/~c675311/tshirt.html
