I just got my tickets... Anyone else going to be at the Palladium on Aug.
24th? I'll be there front and center with my 'Jam shirt on. Just tap me on
the shoulder and say hi!
BTW, Working Man is excellent! Great interpretations and amazing
performances.

Hi everyone.
The Mr Bean / Smear Campaign "I wanna be elected", featuring Bruce Dickinson . . . it seemed to do quite well in the UK charts, but it was truly gruesome to listen to! Believe me, you do NOT want to hear this song . . .
Steve Morse. I bought a Guitar Techniques magazine purely for the front cover photo. It's a very cool Steve Morse proudly wearing a very cool Dream Theater t-shirt :-)
The Digital Man signed off: > -Chris
It took me a while to figure out who the hell this "Chris" guy was :-) I'm easily confused.
If anyone has the Majesty symbol in a vector file format (postscript, wmf, Acorn drawfile, whatever . . . NOT a bitmap) then I'd appreciate it if you could mail me a copy :-)

Dunno. That's certainly partially true, but a study of the early history of FM, for example, turns up the notion of radio as art form. There WAS a time in the history of radio when most of it was programmed by the jocks, which changes the notion of a station format around a little. It certainly wasn't as homogenous as a station programmed by one guy, or worse yet (or maybe just "worse," since a good PD isn't a bad thing, in my opinion), a service that programs 50 stations or so. But there are all sorts of stations that give you a different slant on some format. Right now in the Bay Area, there's a new station making a play for the non-urban female market -- they play a TON of female artists (Jann Arden, Joan Osborne, Tori Amos, Lisa Loeb), along with other AAA music (Dave Matthews, Hootie, Blues Traveler), and a load of 80's music (Men At Work, Modern English, Duran Duran, etc.). It's a new combination to me. KNAC in Long Beach enjoyed a fair amount of success for a few years simply on the virtue of playing a lot of bands like Metallica, Slayer, AC/DC, and a bunch of music that wasn't getting a lot of airplay. So I think radio often offers a new twist...it seems like the first year or so after a format change, a radio station is normally at its best.

Well, I agree with "Gutter Ballet," to be sure. But where's "Hall Of The Mountain King" in all of this? THAT'S the best Savatage to be had, if you ask me (not that anyone DID or anything)....
>> I wish Alek Skolnik would come back. Maybe Exhibition A >> (his other band) will be good if they ever get signed. > >True, Alex did a very good job on HOR... but the new guys for Dead Winter >Dead are quite capable guitarists as well...
Agreed. Alex is a hell of a player, but I'm more interested in hearing him with Exhibit A than as a continued presence in Savatage. Skolnik is THE mind-blowing soloist, though. A part of the first tier or players. I remember Marty Friedman commenting on how he felt Skolnik's playing was like a jazz guy just kind of fooling around over some read lock-and-load rhythms. Couldn't agree less. Skolnik's always been able to have some interesting melodic and harmonic presence AND be heavy at the same time.

I picked up the Rush Tribute CD Working Man at lunch today at the Media Play store on the east side of Columbus, Ohio, USA. It was 12.99 and I got the only copy they received. The dude there said that at least 20 different people have asked for this CD in the last two weeks.

Hi all,
Just joined the list, and I must say first of all that I don't know why all these people are complaining about it. I've been listening to Dream Theater since February (thanx j_m_b!), and subscribed to the list yesterday. I've learned more about DT in the past 14 _hours_ than I have since I started listening to 'em. YtseJam's a valuable resource for new DT fans, in my mind, not to mention prog in general. I'm diggin' it just the way it is.
Now, concerning Dusty Vestal's post: What's this about a Rush tribute album? Who's got details? (slobber slobber drool drip)

I recently ran across a Japanese version of ACOS, and was wondering if anybody else has this. I would like to know if the coupon for the Tears CD single was in every copy or was it a limited release? Also, has anybody received their Tears CD yet? -Mike .~~~~~~~ Michael Kizer -- Computer Sciences Corporation (Tucson, AZ) ~~~~~~~. | Email: mrkizer@ccgate.hac.com (preferred) -or- mkizer@indirect.com | | WWW: http://www.indirect.com/www/mkizer <--- Dream Theater Song Book here!| '~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'

I would rather see Rush forgo Geddy's vocals on >an album and rely on the killer bass/percussion drive that defines the >band. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure that DT could pull it off. However, I doubt that EastWest, or many other large labels, would release an instrumental album by them this early in their career. Labels will still be looking for the stuff that kids can sing along with as a sales gimmick.

All instrumental.
I agree that these are all artists who are instrumentally focused in composition. However, how many of these artists have small cult followings that will by whatever they release? Crimson and Ozric would both fit into this category. One other thing I noticed about the artists you listed is that they are generally only well known to people who listen to prog. Ozric has very little radio crossover potential and maintains its devoted following for that reason. Crimson, on the other hand, has been played on a variety of radio stations because of their longevity. Some of the classic rock stations in southern Ontario play their stuff because it is a name which most people will recognize without having heard the material. Similarly, bands like Genesis will get substantial radio support, but not for their music of quality. It will be for material from the Duke period forward when the pop bug bit them in the butt. Hopefully, the progressive bug will bite them again someday. :) I personally have never heard of Boud Deun and have only recently heard of Miriodor. I've never heard anything on the radio by either band. That doesn't indicate that their music is substandard, only that their is little market support here. At this point, I feel an instrumental record would be lethal for DT. I don't think it was a mistake that ACOS included the cover tunes. These are, for the most part, well known songs that still receive substantial radio airplay. Even the artists covered wreak if cross format radio: newer Genesis, Elton John, Journey, Zep. This is not material that most radio stations would feel squeamish about playing. I doubt that ACOS would have received any airplay at all if the covers hadn't been available. Few non-prog stations will play a song as long as ACOS. It was intelligent marketing that got those tracks on the CD in the first place and their purpose is to say to the public, "Here's a band called Dream Theater playing some great songs that you already know. Check them out! They rock!". If the covers are appreciated, the listener buys the CD or tape. At that point, they also get to hear ACOS. If they like the title track, maybe they buy other records from the catalog and become maniacs like we are. :) If not, they probably don't buy anything else by DT. I might be overemphasizing the link to radio airplay, but I doubt it. Most of the progressive bands who still exist paid their dues in the 70s and early 80s when prog received better world wide support than it does now. If I were to record a record now, I would definitely put one cover song it to get the record on the air; not because I doubt my own writing, but because it gives the listener a familiar track title to take into the record store and say "Do you have that new record by those guys who covered Pull Me Under?". :)
Cheers,
Rick Toronto

I can relate. Of course, there are those of us who find analysis somewhat relaxing....I guess it's just the whole dweebiness thing.

Yeah....I'm from the sort of old school modeming-BBSing folks (well, old enough....early 80's and all -- 300 baud, y'know?), where everything was fair game and we didn't know when to shut up. So all of this NDTC is really pretty homey to me. I'll rant on damn near anything.
For better or worse, I've been enjoying The Jam an awful lot since subscribing....pretty good conversation here. Of course, a new album would do us a lot of good.
Incidentally, I agree with those folks saying that Neil's lyrics on "Power Windows" are top flight. But I liked his work on the last album a lot, too. It was nice seeing him tackle something he normally doesn't....
