I was in Tower Records last sunday and it appears that a Queen tribute disk will
be released sometime this month; no other info was available.
Any Jammers going to the Ted Nugent/Bad Company shows this weekend in Southern
Cal? They're offering two tickets for the price of one for the Universal
Amphitheater show on Monday (tix sales must be hurting!). I saw this same show
last year and it kicked major ass! Go see Ted while you still have the chance.
Hasta.

Somebody asked about the current availability of Atomic Opera's album
(For Madmen Only). I just saw it two days ago at a Camelot, so you
might be able to run into it at a regular music store. I know Best Buy
used to have a couple copies, but doubt if they do now. Your best bet
for starters would be to try a used store (you'd get it cheaper there,
too). I know the guys are still around in some form. I caught a couple
of them at the Cornerstone Festival jamming with Alan Doss and a couple
other guys, and I know they played a set of their own, but didn't see
that. Good luck in your search.

I have it and it's good. I forget what it sounds like now, since I've
been listening to the Rush tribute for the past 24 hours <g>, but
there's some real quality stuff on it. Derek plays on two really good
tracks, and there are a slew of other high points - Echolyn/Still does
total justice to "One Brown Mouse" - my favorite track on the disc.
Just avoid Magellan's "Aqualung" - I used to like that song. :)
Anyone have any info on Magellan, by the way? I had heard good things
about them, and then heard them butcher "Aqualung," and now I'm not too
sure I want their album.

For whoever was asking about the Tull tribute... IMHO, it is even better than the Rush Tribute... and I like Rush more than Tull. There's alot more improvisation for one thing. Even the flute playing is excellent. Too bad Derek's playing is rather low in the mix. Great CD though!

I've got it. basically if you like the Yes and Genesis tributes then you'll like this one.
Magellan, Echolyn, Tempest, John Wetton, etc play on it.
Also DT's Derek Sherinian plays on 2 songs...
I like it.

Hiya, Kids. Syrinx here to entertain you, so put your heads on your desk and listen carefully.
It's taken two days to get over it, but King's X and the Galactic Cowboys were here, and i was in attendance. I have to say that the show was without a doubt the worst show i've ever been to in my life. First off, the Cowboys were just horrid. I'm sorry, but Hair + Feedback = not a band. They were horrible. Beyond horrible. The bassist looked oh so dumb trying to be into it while playing like 1 note.
Then King's X came on. I'm sorry, did i pay $11.50 for a concert or for a sermen? It was beyond horrible. It was _SO_ bad that I sold all 6 King's X albums for $8 dollars. I'm happy i got that much. :) I'm now on a Kings-X-Sucks mode, so you're just gonna have to deal with it.
On a lighter note, I purchased the Rush tribute yesterday. You know i had to talk about it. :)
Working Man/By-Tor: Well, it's obvious Mike and Mr. Sheenan love playing together. Hey. When did Sebastian actually LEARN how to sing? It's interesting to hear him in such a low register. I like it, tho. For By-Tor, what's up with James's vocals? Did they quadrouple it just so you really couldn't understand? I dunno. His voice was strong, tho. That's a plus.
Analog Kid: One of my favs. I like Jack Russell's vocals on it. Interesting keyboard solo in the end (wasn't expecting it). Again, great Portnoy/Sheehan/Allman chemistry. You know they had fun.
The Trees: not bad. Portnoy's having loads of fun here.
La Villa: I think Mr. Morse might wanna stay on the Classical Guitar. I like him better there. Chemistry is great (notice the Exit...Stage Left drums/bass work near the end). I found James Murphy's end guitar solo very sloppy, tho.
Mission: Another of my fav's. I love Martin's vocals here, although he could have been stronger. Nice work by Robert Berry. I haven't heard a thing of his i don't like (and that incudes his things with Keith Emerson/Carl Palmer). Nice Drums, very much peratian. :)
Anthem: It's ok. I like Mark Slaugher's vocals (very All the World's A Stage. Ok. He copied it from the album. It's actually Geddy's) but there was a chours where there should be. I don't like George Lynch. "Hi. I like to to guitar solos." Dude. You're polluting my Rush. Other than that, I like.
Jacob's Lader: Did i mention i like Sebastian Bach on this tribute? Oh. I do. John does some very Liefsoneque guitar work (which is a good thing). One of the better songs on here.
Closer To The Heart: I like. Alot. I also like the 2112 at the end (gee. syrinx. 2112. you'd think...)
Natural Science: Mixed. I like Devin's vocals at times. He goes WAY TOO OFF on this song. If he toned it towned it down a bit, this would have been the strongest track on the record. The music's tight. I love it. Now, if we can get Mr. Townsend to tone it down just a little...
YYZ: What's not to like? Stu Hamm is increadible. Enough said.
Red Barchetta: Vocally the best track on the album. Midway through James finds his niche, and kicks some serious ass. I like Morse's guitar work, although it should have been louder in places.
Freewill: Nice way to close out. Good song.
Overall, it's good. I think Mike goes out of his way to be like Neil, and it shoes he's trying TOO hard, and it doensn't sound right, but overall i like. James's vocals on Red Barchetta are amazing. Overall, i would reccommend it. give it thumbs up!
Ok, kids. You can lift your heads up now. Rest time is over. :)
Syrinx has spoken, and so it shall be law.

seriously though, i dug charles, not as much as james, but he still was good... and hey, would dt have used him if they didnt like him?
as far as moderation goes- dont moderate the list! it would just put a wall up. i mean, we're like a democracy, right? who wants to have someone read through their posts just to make sure its right DT quality and not even see it up for a week all that bullshit? i've never been one to say "so and so posts too much" or "that post was crap", it just doesnt bother me, and why should it? if you dont like it just skip it... and if it takes too long for you to find the post in the digest you're interested in reading subcribe ack mode... and if you think all the posts suck just get the hell off the list. right now i'm not on this list for DT info... i'm on this list to be immersed in ideas by other DT fans, who i know i have a common ground with and can give me some insight on other things, and i've made some great fucking friends here, better friends than whom i'd hang out with around town here and stuff... i think this place rules, no complaints here. :)

he also mentioned that phil and the boys walk around looking dog mean backstage and everyones afraid to confront them, but when you go up and talk their faces instantly change and theyre in fact extremely friendly. first thing dimebag did when he got off the bus was go over to the fence and take a piss. what a guy :) ~Rip

Someone posted about not being able to find the Rush Tribute in Seattle. I got mine from the U-District Tower Records. This involved a nightmarish, two-day ordeal. Their computers said they had 10 copies of the damn thing. But there was no trace of them anywhere. So I went back today. No luck. I finally found them sitting on a red cart (the ones they use for re-stocking the shelves) where they had presumably been since the last time I was there. Assholes. Anyway, the cost was $15.99 which comes to a whopping $17.30 when tax is figured in. I haven't listened to it yet (TheJob) but, judging by the glowing reviews, it's probably worth the money.

This route is not CHEAP, but I can create a very believable JP sound on my system... Basically, I'm running a Carvin SX100 (solid state) with a DigiTech ValveFX (solid state AND tube) in the effects loops. The second output from the ValveFX runs into a Carvin F300 solid state poweramp and out to a Carvin 4X12... (gee, hard to figure out what brand I like, isn't it? :) ) In all honesty, all a person would need for this setup (assuming they have an existing system) is a Carvin SX80 preamp and the ValveFX.. with a bit of tweeking on the Carvin, the Valve will sound like JP. :)
