Well, after calls to about 10 record stores in the DFW area (and about 10
salespeople saying "Uh, sure don't"), I finally found a place that had
Working Man. So I'd like to thank the Jammer who, the other day, said that
he found it at Borders Bookstore, because otherwise I would never have
    called them.

They held a copy for me at the desk and I drove for an hour into freakin'
Fort Worth to get it. My brother wanted to buy it too, but they'd sold the
other copy that day. (Yes, The Other Copy... only 2 were ordered. Sad,
huh?) I guess it was somewhat appropriate that I had to drive both ways
    through RUSH hour traffic.

It is an awesome album. Poor Lerxt gets his ass kicked on every song.
Although I think I blinked and missed Petrucci's solo. Did he phone that
    thing in?

(Heh, the name of the next Rush instrumental: "Phone That Thing In".)

I really dig how they throw little sly winks of other Rush tunes into some
of the songs... I won't spoil it for you folks who don't have it yet.

You people are right. Devin Townsend is one big mistake. Somebody go step
    on his nads for me.

Maybe it's the latent psychosis acting up again, but in Red Barchetta, I
keep hearing James (who is even more The Man than ever) sing "I strip away
    the old Labrie..."

I'm not used to hearing Portnoy's cymbals mixed that loudly. He does so
much cymbalwork, it really takes over the songs. Nothing wrong with that,
though. And I dig his trademark "Can You Guess The Time Signature: 4/4
Over 6/8 Or Vice Versa?" trick that he chucks in there.

Sheehan is also The Man. That "Trees" intro... I think he's the 6-Fingered Man.

Who is James Murphy? He kicks ass on every tune!

Mike Portnoy is credited as "Creative Consultant". Anyone know why?

FW's Closer To The Heart sounds almost identical to the Rush version, and
Bob van der Loo or whatever his damn name is sounds almost exactly like
Geddy on Freewill. But I guess those are no small feats. (And you know
what they say about guys with small feets)

So in all, I was wondering if all the Tribute tunes would be better than
the Rush originals. Guitar-wise, yes, all of them are better. They're
heavier, mixed better, played more tightly, and the solos rip Alex a new
    orifice.

Bass-wise, only Sheehan & Hamm (the famous law firm) really kick. Oh, and
the guy from Cynic too. They all do a little more showboating than Geddy
does, but then, Geddy has to worry about singing. I'd say it's about even,
maybe tilted a little in favor of the young'uns.

Drum-wise... only Neil can be Neil. Portnoy is the best drummer on the
album, and the only one I'd say that outdoes Peart's versions. I mean,
Portnoy plays Peart's La Villa solo note-for-note, and one of the drum
breaks in By-Tor strongly hints at Peart's live YYZ solo. Although, to be
fair, Peart these days could probably make short work of Portnoy in a Drum
Duel-- which, if they ever tour together, might just happen... and make the
shit FLY out of everyone's asses.

So in all, the Tribute absolutely kicks ass. But the originals still stand
on their own. If you can find Working Man, buy it. If you can't find it,
get someone to order it at every place you call.

    All from me.

    Scott.

Thought I'd give those who don't know a brief description of Magellan
    (there's even some DT content).

    They'rrrrrr Grrrreat!

Magellan the band is comprised of two brothers, Trent and Wayne Gardner.
Trent does most all of the writing and plays all keys. Wayne plays
guitars. They are augmented sometimes by a bassist and sometimes by a real
drummer. (That's right, they use a drum machine. Don't hold it against
them. How many Pearts and Portnoys do you think there are in the world?)
As far as I know, Magellan is a studio-prog band only, probably will never
tour. I think Trent is a policeman somewhere in California.

Magellan has 2 albums out: Hour of Restoration (still available as a very
hard to find import) and Impending Ascension. Both are on the Magna Carta
    label.

Hour of Restoration is a good first album, highlighted by a fabulous first
track which is about the history of the Magna Carta document. Fascinating
    subject matter!

Impending Ascension is much better, perhaps even landmark. It includes the
epic Estadium Nationale (about the "disappearances" in Argentina in the
70s), Waterfront Wierdos (all too realistic tale of homelessness w/Jethro
Tull drummer Doane Perry), and Storms and Mutiny, a tribute to their
namesake, explorer Ferdinand Magellan. (It also clocks in around 11 mins
    or so.)

They've also done tracks for 3 Magna Carta Tribute albums:
Yes: Don't Kill The Whale (waaaay better than Yes' version!)
Genesis: Mama (pretty close to the original)
Tull: Aqualung (The way I see it is this: I really like it, but at
the same time I am glad Tull did it the way they did.)

    I'd describe Magellan as:
Rabin-style Yes (vocally), but with Rick Wakeman on keys.
Peart quality lyrics with a historical bent.
            Best keyboarding since Wakeman.
Drum machine can be overlooked. It's not that bad.
            Proggy!

    Hope that helps.

    Patrick Taylor

BTW, Magellan is supposed to have another album out this year, but I think
it's gone the way of the new DT album...

Did you forget that King's X is a band with a definate Christian
overtone ("Faith Hope Love," "Out of the Silent Planet [a religious sci
fi book by Christian author C.S. Lewis]" "KING'S X" for Christ's sake

why are you so hurt-offended-put-off-disillusioned [take your pick, I
don't know your feelings] by that?)
I haven't gotten a chance to see KX this tour, so was
there something else beyond their religious beliefs that got under your

suddenly made you hate albums you liked enough before to collect on CD?

This would have fared much better if it had been "A Dream Theater Tribute to
Rush." John Petrucci is the only guitarist worth anything on this CD. All
guitarists on this CD other than him suck shit on these songs. I got really
sick of hearing the first four notes of a Lifeson guitar solo only to lead
into a mindless shred-fest. JP had the decency to play accurate Lifeson-esque
solos. Is not the beauty of Alex's playing the fact that he can shred like
anyone, but he knows when NOT to? That aspect of his playing has always been
what does it for me. It makes the times when he does shred that much more
special <ie, Cut to the Chase, The Analog Kid, The Camera Eye>. I do not like
Strangiato on this thing at all. Too much palm-muting. I couldn't believe
when I heard Steve Morse play the rhythms wrongly, either. The guitarists
and drummers ALL way overplay. Bas just sucks. Whomever taught him classical
vocal technique probably hides his/her head in shame when this man sings. Mark
Slaughter--woah. :) That was genuinely scary. Someone already said that Devin
goes way too far overboard on this song, and I agree. If he toned it down a
few notches, it would be good. Stu's performance on YYZ leaves me cold. Ged's
fills had actual contour and melody, not mindless 32nd notes. I must say I
absolutely fucking hate the production. What the hell is that?

Freewill is actually pretty good. Jack Russell did not annoy me half as much
as i expected him too, although I would have picked a different song for him.
Who is playing The Trees? They bite it big time. Eric Martin fucking RULES on
Mission. Surprise of the CD. Ray Alder, you bring a tear to my eye. Great,
emotive performance. Best track on the disc after Red Barchetta. Go James!

Wow, this was harsh. Please ignore this. I know nothing...

The Rush Tribute CD really jams! Attention all Baltimore area
jammers!!!!! Go to Record and Tape Traders. Of course, they had it
($14.99) (4 copies until I got there -- And Then There Were Three :)).
The Towson store also had "Live At THe Marquee" UK ($20) and Japan
($32) release (Japan's has Another Day instead of Surrounded). They
also had The Silent Man CD single with Eve for $9.99. Anyhow, I'm in
the process of listening to it right now. About Natural Science, I
haven't had such a good laugh in a while! Musically, it was
excellent. Vocally, however, wow that guy really takes artistic
freedom to the limits. What the hell were all those howls and
growls?? Every once in awhile, he would actually sound like he knew
what he was doing then, I'm speechless... Was good for a laugh
though. Gotta go now, see y'all later.

    Hi Jammers!

I know this isn't the KISS list, but I want everybody to see this! This is a
post to Kissarmy by the list owner:

    >That's it. I've had it. I've asked you guys time and time again to

    >Enjoy it today because it all ends tomarrow.

Anyone who wants it can have it.

    >Kissarmy Mailing List Owner

The reason I'm posting this is because if SOME people don't quit whining to
Skadz about how bad the jam is and 'Blah, Blah, Blah...' then we might see
one of these posts on the ytsejam. We've already had one list owner give it
up, next time we may not be so lucky as to find someone to run the jam. I for
one love the ytsejam and would just hae to see it come to an end.

    Peace!

Actually I lke Magellan's version of Aqualung. It's their interpretation
anyway. But everyone is entitled to their opinions...

Magellan is a pretty good band. They've got 2 albums: Hour of Restoration
and Impending Ascension. HOR is probably no longer available. Both are
pretty good albums. I would say if you like the magna carta label you
will like Magellan. They've got a lot of keys but less then Cairo does.

Speaking of Sebastian Bach on the Rush Tribute, Skid Row does a Rush song
whose title I can't remember on their tribute EP Bsides themselves. Also
on this are Priest and Kiss tunes plus 2 others.

     Greetings all,
My copy of Critical Mass just arrived today and, to put it mildly, it is
FUCKING INCREDIBLE! Rather than give a review, though (e.g. "The 5th
bass twang in "Cold Fire was just so full and rounded " and all that
stuff. We know it rocks), I have chosen to thank Mr. Bahr in the best
way I know how: through a parody. So if Neil Peart is reading this, I'm
really sorry for slaughtering your song to praise the distributor of a,
um, recording of questionable legality, but it had to be done. And now,
    I give you

A TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL BAHR (sung to the tune of "Nobody's Hero")
I knew this was different from a regular C.D.,
I sent in my money to a strange anomoly,
It didn't seem a threat to my credit history,
It only seemed a small price for a live piece of harmony,

After weeks went by, it arrived in a cart (*give me a break, it rhymes!*)
When I heard the first few songs, I felt excitement cross my heart...

    Michael Bahr is my hero!
    Taped an awesome concert,
    Close to my home town,
    HERO
    Love the bitchin' artwork
    The coolest pic around,
    HERO
    Could have got arrested
    Got your ass kicked out,
    HERO
So you broke a few laws,
    Who will ever know?
    C.M. is what I'm buying
    >From Mike Bahr, my hero...

I didn't see the show, but my friend was there with glee,
His eardrums were shattered in a cloud of music ecstacy,
I tried to carry on, tried to kill my jealousy,
Now with CM I can be there as often as I wanna be,

After weeks went by, it arrived in a cart,
When I heard the first few songs, I felt excitement cross my heart...

    Michael Bahr is my hero!
    Didn't let the music
Get drowned by the howling mob,
    HERO
    How'd you hide your soundboard?
    What a great mystery...
    HERO
    Love the jokes and wisecracks
    And the country song ;)
    HERO
    Got my favorite tunes there,
Can't ask for that much more,
    Thanks for Critical Mass,
    Mike Bahr's my hero!

    Peace,
    Andrea
