just got back from the kx show in nyc. jeez. what a show.......

but i must say that i was the least bit impressed by the galactic cowboys
(except that the bassist kinda looks like steve vai). nothing really
impressed me. there was that one song ("don't you belive..." or something
like that) that had cool harmonies, but i didn't care a lot for them.

there was a guy there with a ytsejam shirt (he happened to be with a quite
attractice lady), and when i asked him who he was, he said that he didn't
post on the jam, but he borrowed the shirt from a yammer. (?!??!)

king's x was great....for a long time i could not understand for the life of
me why they were considered a "christian rock band". i think i began to
understand when everyone poured onto the stage at the end, and in the song
"over my head." i ran into doug on stage and thanked him, and he just grabbed
me and hugged me for a few seconds, which i thought was weird but way
    cool.....

to rick terry (i think)......mad phat props (or mad phat tanks, how you
prefer) for the bday wishes a few days back....ffidh!!

now that i had a chance to catch up on jams, someone wondered about excellent
drumming works......here's a list of what i think would go there...

zappa, you can't do that on stage anymore, vol.2 (chester thompson), anything
featuring manu katche (late peter gabriel, new tori amos and satch, for
starters)- he's got the best sense of groove right now. king crimson with
bill bruford (someone PLKEASE agree that him and tony levin make up an insane
rhythm section. thank you). some of the more recent living colour works, and
if you get a chance go to blockbuster and rent prince's "sign o the times."
and watch prince and shiela e. (yes, prince plays drums) do some funky shit.
i mention funky cause too many drummers when they try to funk end up sounding
    so white it ain't funny.

    so that's a start.

well, later punks, and as always, peace out.

The Jammer who was originally going to help out with traveling north
to NY with me has had to cancel, so I'm wondering if any kind souls up
    there can help me out....

The most grievous loss is not having a car available to us any more.
I'm currently exploring a few avenues based on price. I can probably
afford Amtrak from here to NY (Penn Station I think), but....what
    then? The con's near LaGuardia....

I'm also looking at the possibility of flying up, but I've noticed
that few discount airlines seem to fly to LaGuardia, at least not from
    here.

So, what I'm looking for is someone to act as a chauffeur, or if not,
then someone to help out with directions, etc. (I'm not afraid of
taking connecting trains and subways to the vicinity of the hotel, but
I -am- afraid of taking a wrong turn and ending up in a scene from
    ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. :))

E-mail to the address below if you can help out a fellow Jammer.
Benefits include: my witty conversation, and uh....well, I'll bring
along some CDs and tapes. :)

Someone mentioned Devin T. "going over the top" on "Natural Science."
Hey, if he's between bands, he might have -wanted- to make a bit of a
splash on the tribute, like a living, breathing vocalist's resume. :)

Why aren't the guys from Cynic credited on the back cover?

If you're not a regular on the IRC channel #ytsejam, you can skip this message.

    Folks, we have a problem.

There's been a lot of bickering and infighting recently, and it has to stop. Recently, a few people have decided that #ytsejam is a forum for scripts and bots and abuses of power, rather than for talking about music. I'm getting a feeling that the owner of the server is getting tired of it. You all read about the maintainer of the Kissarmy. I don't know, but things might be headed down that road.

One of the coolest things about our channel to me was that everyone was granted operator status, that we were all equals. Lately, though, people have been abusing these privileges. Also, a great deal of ignorance and hatred has cropped up, for which there simply is no place.

Let's keep our channel a place to chat, not a place to play with IRC tools, flood the channel with useless script information, tell each other that our favorite music "sucks", kick and ban each other, or any of the other childish nonsense. You all know what I mean. It's gotten to the point that I don't want to log on till well after midnight, when I hope things have died down. Let's be civil to each other, and have a good time.

    Until next time, D-Man

    Hola amigos y amigas,

The king of NDTC again :)

I just returned from a gig at The Edge in Palo Alto, CA where a 80's new wave band called Berlin (anyone remember them?) played tonight. GREAT SHOW!!!!

Whilst I was there, I saw a sign for (drum roll, please!)

    KING'S X!

Yes, that's right, King's X will be delivering a sermon on Sept. 13. There was no opening act listed, but let's all pray really hard that it's the Galactic Cowboys. Tickets are either $12 or $13 (my memory fails me) and are available at The Edge or through BassTARD tickets.

As Freddie Mercury once said :And there you have it."

I just saw an ad in Guitar magazine for "IOR - Instrumentals of Rock". It's supposedly a radio show dedicated to instrumental guitarists. They had a poll and Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana and Eric Johnson were the top vote-getters.

Anyway, it lists under future shows - John Petrucci discussing "A Change of Seasons". Does anyone get this show? I'm going to call them up to see which cities get it and will post them if anyone is interested.

Many of KX's tracks have spiritual themes to them. Some have references to God, but you won't find a gospel record here. This is good driving hard rock with a melodic, blues/gospel influence, strong vocals and a guitar sound that just won't quit. The vocal harmonies remind me a little of Boston at times. I know you are a big Rush fan, as am I. The music has great appeal to me and you might also enjoy it. I would suggest starting with Gretchen Goes to Nebraska. Alternates would be Out of the Silent Planet and Faith, Hope, Love. The self-titles record is also very good. Hope this is helpful.

    Cheers,

I don't get how that one guy can have bought all 6 King's X cds then go to a show and then totally hate the band. There is something wrong there. That is like if DT played at a crappy club and the sound sytem sucked big time and it turns out to have not been a good time. Would you hate the band?

    Not I.

I got the Brooklyn boot from Tim Lodge. I haven't had time to listen to much. I've listend to some of the live Chris Collins concert. It is not bad quality but there is at least one dropout that I heard. My main gripe was the cd case was all messed up. One of the hinges was broken and the little circle that holds the cd in was broken so when I opened the cd case the cd fell out...

The cd times out at about 47 minutes.

    Hey everyone,

We certainly do get a hell of a lot of mail on this list, but I like the grouping of many e-mails together, making things more compact, not getting out of hand! Anyhow, (sorry about no personal responses), but to the person replying about Dave Weckyl: Yes, it's spelled WECKYL, and he is an awesome newer style jazz artist. I played, or at least attempted to play to many of his songs while taking lessons in high school. He has lots of organ riffs, soprano sax, and electric guitar. I think his best release is the MASTER PLAN, which has the "deuling drummers" each in his own speaker! That's Dave on one side and the famous Steve Gadd in the other. The title track which has this drumming (and also Chick Corea on piano) is a great latin tune, for those of you who like modern latin music. Of course, I like heavy stuff, too, like Rush, Queensryche, Savatage (just got the CD though, so haven't heard it much yet), extreme, etc. Nobody comments on EXTREME. I mean, the stuff that doesn't get radio play is awesome, especially on pornagraffiti. Their newest release is rather dissappointing, except that they obtained a new good double bass drummer! I think though that Nuno is right up there with Petrucci on guitars. Anyone interested check out the instrumental track on extreme's newest release - incredible guitar piece. (crap - can't remember title - midnight something?) How about the STEVE MORSE BAND'S newest release. I think Morse gets better as he gets older, unlike RUSH. Will RUSH ever do odd times again in any of their songs, like their older stuff? Also, speaking of RUSH, how can I get this tribute CD that I see mixed reactions about? One more question: Is it worth getting the silent man single release for the song "EVE"?
