Whoa, Dave Weckel (or is it Weckyl or Weckle?) , my friend has one of
    his
cd's. And there's a drumming duel, and one of the drummers plays on the
left speaker and the other one on the right speaker. These guys are hot
stuff. Checking him out would be fine for those of you who hasn't heard
    him yet.

To the dude who was wanting some suggestions for some bands with excellence in drumming, try out Tourniquet (esp. the track K517 on their latest full-length album "Vanishing Lessons" - it's a drum solo played along to a Scarlatti harpsichord piece). You also may dig Believer for some blinding time changes and some funky time signatures and stuff. the music here can get rather heavy at times, so you may or may not dig that. Hope that helps. Enjoy!

After reading all this Devon Townsend hacking, I just gotta speak up. Sex and Religion is one of my favorite and most often played CD's BECAUSE of his vocals! Seriously! This guy has so much emotion he doesn't know what to do with it all.

It must be stated though, that he is NOT a stereotypical "Prog" singer and if you traditionally adore singers like Geoff Tate and James LaBrie and their golden-throated brethren, then maybe his style might be a little hard to swallow for you.

To me, I have my Prog disks and I have my Glam disks and I have some Death Disks (the genre, not the band) and I am exposed to an entire range of singers. I like his vocals because I like all kinds of vocals. I don't like ALL vocals, just lots of different kinds of them.

His problem is that he likes prog too much. ;) He does stuff like Vai's "Sex and Religion" (ANYTHING by Vai is progressive) and then this Working Man gig. He's a guy who loves to scream (I'll give you that) and loves doing things with prog bands. That's his downfall. Prog and screaming don't mix. I wish he could get together with some good semi-prog semi-death band and scream to his heart's content.

And there's another thing... Vocal improvisation. A LONG while back on the 'Jam, people complained that James LB isn't the greatest at improvising in songs. He just does his standard "Yeaaaaah, Yeah!" or "Wooa, Whooooah!" Where as in Devon's case, in the song "Touching Tongues" off S&R he's wiggin out! He's improvising entire words! Singing gibberish and making his voice an instrument in itself! Let's see if I can remember a part from it...

    "Yeaaaah! Eh! Hwoah! Sonnee Ho-ayah. Yaaah-oh-tay-ah-neeosay-ohhhoh. Tayo! Taaaayaaayaaayooooooh-innosay-yayoyayo Yeaaaaaahhhh-Ohwooo!!!

I know it looks kinda weird, and he sure is no normal singer, that's for sure, but he's for real. He just needs to find the right "niche" for his vocals to be used properly.

To me, a crappy singer just can't hold a note. Devon can certainly hold a note and does. It's just that he's always so emotional it makes people think he NEEDS to scream to sound good. There are PLENTY of non-screaming parts on S&R and it makes you appreciate what a unique and versitile singer he is.

And let's be honest. The first time you heard Geddy Lee sing, are you telling me that it was one of the most beautiful voices you've ever heard? No! You got USED to him. Megadeth fans will also know what I'm talking about too. "Who's this elf singing this heavy stuff?" And then Dave's voice started to appeal to you and you looked past his whiny-ass voice. Anyway...

So to sum up my entirely-too-long defense of Devon Townsend, if you can't stand screaming, you won't like Devon. But if you've been bitten by the Death bug, find yourself considering something like Sepultura's Roots or a Pantera CD, if you've "crossed over to the Dark Side", then you definitely should give Vai's S&R a chance.

He's not Prog (and yes, he probably doesn't belong on the Working Man CD)

    He's not "Death" either.

But he's damn good, whatever the fuck he is! ;)

    - Dr. Teeth

And as always, everything up above there is my humble opinion, so if it disagrees with you, go get a stomach pump. ;)

How about a Triple bill? Dream Theater/Savatage/Queensryche (Hey! We can all dream, Can't we?) Queensryche is scheduled for a end of the year release...but it could be delayed till about....say Feb '97 ?

James has recorded with Disincarnate, Death, Testament, I think Suffocation (not sure bout that) among others. He's putting out a Solo Album in September. All I can say is, knowing James Murphy, I was a little disappointed with his performance. He's better than he played on this album.

"Little Earthquakes." It's the best, front to back, by far. The other two are a little less consistently great.

Devin Townsend is from Vancouver, and he has played in several local bands here. One notable one is Caustic Thought. He always tries to go against the grain with his singing. He wants to be as outragous as he can get. Yes he does love to scream. :) Oh and i heard an interview with him after his vai gig, and he said that he actually doesn't like steve vai. he doesn't like his music either. he only did it for the money. devin is also a great guitar player. one of my friends went to highschool with him. he said that they had a talent competition, and devin did the intro to van halen's eruption, but using his tongue instead of fingers :)
