    Hey Folks,

I'm brand spankin' new on this YTSE jam list, and just wondering,
what is this talk about a James LaBrie replacement? I hope this is just
hypothetical talk, because not many out there can sing with the range he
has. Also, FYI I'm a big drumming fan, with RUSH having been my favorite
rock band before DT came along (no real shock there!). I've played to a
whole array of RUSH songs on my set back home in NY. I'm also into
some jazz (very limited though) with Dave Weckyl as my favorite jazz
    drummer.
Any suggestions on other artists I should pursue for some
excellent drumming, as well as good music?

I am hoping to set up a web page which will consist of links to sites
containing information on metal bands. If you run or know of any official or
unofficial metal sites please email me the URL so I can add it to the list.
By 'metal' I mean any heavy, thrash, death, black, power, progessive, doom,
speed or grind metal you can think of. I would like this to be the most
comprehensive list of links on the internet, but for it to work it needs
your input. If you think I will already know of a site then please email me
anyway because you'd be suprised what I don't know! Thanks in advance.

All URLs or other information mailto:andrew@aberry.demon.co.uk

The proposed site will be at http://www.aberry.demon.co.uk/metallist/
The page has already been set up but contains only this message at present.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey guys,

I just got the Rush Tribute, which was released on Aug. 6. I just want to say a little bit about it very generally and quickly. First, I love the album and I think Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan do a great job, so they're in the clear. However, some of the playing is a bit much. I found some of the guitar solos a little excessive, to the point of detracting from the original feel of the song. Also, the production on James' vocals, and all the vocals for that matter isn't great, so he sounds awesome performance-wise, but not as striking production-wise as, say, Awake or ACOS. Finally, IMHO, Devin Townshend's rendition of Natural Science is worth the price of the album. Creepy...powerful...man, he needs to get in a band again! LAter all.

There is a local prog metal band to DC called Division (formerly Visionary).

    Their web page is http://www.erols.com/division/

I've only heard their sample on the site and I will definitely seek out more about this band.

Supposedly they are opening for Yngwie at Jaxx on August 24 Saturday.

    Anybody else heard/seen them?

Guess I'm just slow, or something. I've tried to like Magellan (I've heard the Magna Carta release) and it just doesn't happen for me. The drum machine drives me nuts! No, there isn't a Peart or a Portnoy around every corner, but there are plenty of good drummers out there who can handle some complex stuff. The lyrics are, uh, well, horrible. The historical ones seem really forced and the others don't seem to go anywhere (the exception being "Songsmith"). Their songwriting skills seem to be non-existant. They just string together riffs and jams and call it a song. I think, in all honesty, that they're trying to hard to sound proggy. If they'd slow down and concentrate on writing something musical, I think they'd be better off.

    Just a dissenting opinion . . .

Hello once again, Well, I've had the chance to listen to the tribute a few more times (and on a better system then these cheap ass computer speakers). I still think it is great, however, I definitely have to agree with Mr. Zebrowski, most of the guitar solos are overplayed and take away from the emotion that they originally had. I am most disappointed with Jake E. Lee's (my favorite Ozzy guitarists after RR) and believe it or not Steve Morse (another of my favs). The solo in La Villa is one of my favorite Alex solos (that's why I learned it note for note) and I was deeply disappointed to NOT hear the solo reproduced properly. It was a good solo it its own right, but it just doesn't do Alex any justice. To me, the way SOME of these guitarist butchered the solos (and rhythms in some cases) was a slap on the face to Alex. It is nice to put your own touch into a solo, just don't COMPLETELY rewrite it. The intro to the trees is also completely wrong! I already sarid my piece on Devin yesterday but when I let my wife listen to it last night, she also laughed and wanted to know who the hell that was. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy the hell out of this CD. I've never been much of a Sheehan fan, but I think he played really well (his little improvs were tasteful not over done like the guitars). MP, JLB, JP, and FW's performances were shining moments on the CD. I do think that if the whole CD had been DT and FW it would have been perfect! My Rush kick is in gear again (been listening to Caress of Steel and Fly By Night again this morning). Does anyone have the Yes or Pink Floyd tributes? If so, how are they? What about the rest of the Magna Carta stuff besides SG and Magellan? Please e-mail me or post to the jam on this one. Thanks. Someone mentioned in earlier jam about JLB on Life in Still Water. Are you also aware that KM played on At Fate's Hand (perfect symmetry)? Also, another reason I didn't like WDADU at first (I love it now) was because of Charlie Dominici's voice. JLB has so more strength, balls, and range. LaTM really shows how much better WDADU would've been with JLB and JP's new sound. Well, I think that's enough for now? See ya, Rick Pierpont P.S. Any N. Balto Co/S. York Co. jammers out there?

I find Magellan to be VERY Yes derivative. There are the obligatory time signature changes, but the songs don't flow particularly well. And Trent Gardner's voice..... well, let's just say that I'm trying to keep my breakfast down. :) I have Impending Ascension. Musically, it's OK. Nothing to write home about though, so you might want to audition it before buying.

SRO is Rush' management. I called HMV and was told that they won't be carrying the album. Tower's position is the same since it's sale is being blocked in Canada. They said that they might do import orders from the US, if they are allowed to. It didn't sound very hopeful though.

I agree with you 100%. The involvement of the visual media was not a good thing for music in general. It has made music into more of a fashion statement than an art form. The material that is played on MTV can be appealing visually, but generally leaves much to be desired in the sonic sense. After all, when was the last time you saw a video for something progressive played? Even progressive material has been butchered by the video industry. The editing of TTT and PMU are good examples. Those songs lose a great deal of their identity in the video. The PMU video is VERY cheesy. It has nothing to do with the intended lyrical content, not because they couldn't do it, but because it wouldn't be as appealing to all of the little metalheads out there. :) TTT is not much better. A collage of people meeting challenges would have suited that song much better. One of the best videos I have seen in recent years is the QR video for Best I Can. The video fits the lyrical theme and that is a true rarity in the industry.

It's a truly sad state of affairs. There is nothing outside of the odd tab book. You will come across the occasional bootleg, but there are no shirts or tour books to be had. James should force Eastwest to market stuff in Canada! I'm sure that they could easily sell a few hundred shirts here. I might buy all of them and scalp them! :) Yeah, Rick the fashion pirate!! Get your DT shirtz here! ;)

Ask them. Tell them you want to know if it has the coupon in it for the bonus disc and that would be the only reason you'd purchase it. They can always shrink wrap it again. If they want your money, they'll work for it.

I have to say, I enjoyed the last jam muchly except for one thing... what's the deal with the MIME crap? And the guy who quoted the MIME crap and said "Don't do that".... isn't that like teaching your kids not to throw brinks at each other by showing them how mad mommy gets when you drop a cinder block on her head? Err... maybe there's a better way to explain that...

To the poor new drooler that does not know the name of the Rush Tribute: it's called The Working Man, it came out Tuesday, and you can get it anywhere. It's good, but not as good as everyone's making it sound. I guess even with all this massive virtuosity, I still like good ol' Rush better. I thought some of the people tried too hard (Eric Martin and Devon Townsend) and some of the people didn't try hard enough (Jake E. Lee and George Lynch among others)

Well, as for the cymbal work, that's what I think has always set MP apart from the others. I'm glad it's so high in the mix. I mean, I think my fave drum work on Awake is the slow beginning part to LSoaD. He really chooses his percussion well. That's what I like about Zonder, too. Anyone can play a song with hi-hat, snare, and bass drum. But these guys tastefully use their percussion to define a distinct style. I hope to hear more of it on the next DT album.

Well... Rush is a very precise band, but I think the idea of the tribute was for those musicians to play what they felt, what Rush songs did to them. It's not 100% faithful to the originals, but then again, why should it be? I would just listen to the originals then.

And, imho, by and large the liberties that were taken with the tunes were very tasteful. Showcasing the musicians' ability and their feeling, without compromising the integrity of the songs.
