Uh, that might not stop him... Ever heard Django Reinhardt? The dude does
stuff with only 2 fingers that most guitarists can barely do with all of
theirs intact! (Reinhardt was a pre-WWII jazz guitarist who played in the
Quintet du Hot Club du France with Stephane Grappeli. When he was 18 years
old, he was badly burned and lost the use of his ring finger and pinkie on
    his fretting hand.)

Thanks to the tribute album, Devin Townsend has a new fan in me. At first,
I hated it, but since the entire disc was on infini-repeat, this track
really really grew on me and now it's an 11-way tie for 2nd favorite track.
    "THE UNIVERSE LEARNED TO EXPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!"
That part is just too cool! I guess Dev's one of those you either love or
hate, and there's no middle ground. What else has he done besides Vai's
_Sex & Religion_? C'mon Devin fans! (I know you're on this list!) Say
something positive about this guy so I can agree with somebody on this
    matter! ;)

For those of you talking about James Murphy.. He also recorded the most
recent Testament CD - LOW. IMHO, his playing was better than anything
that Skolnick put down.. but that's my personal taste.. It's a shame that
the band went down for the count on it's best CD in 10 years.

Not really a flame, but a point of divergence. If I wanted note-for-note
Rush, I'd listen to Rush. I want to hear interpretation and improvisation.
It's more of a jazz sensibility, but when my band covered Rush, we certainly
took a lot of liberties with the music. My guess, though I've not yet heard
the album, is that I'd wish for MORE liberties, not less. I don't want to
hear personalities confined by the music....and, in general, I'd rather hear
an original solo than someone else's take on the same solo.

It is Dave WECKL (note the spelling, check his CDs for proof)

His solo CDs listed from oldest to newest are:

-Master Plan (contains "drum duel" with Steve Gadd)
    -Heads Up
    -Hard-Wired

These are all excellent! I'd have to say I like his first CD, Master Plan,
    the best...

Yeah, but don't get confused..."Christian overtones" does not equal
"Christian band." KX is NOT a xn band. They're a band who writes what's
on their hearts, and many times spiritual things come up, but there are
other things as well, and there are *other* interpretations that you (as
    the listener) can take.

Anyway, in response to the original post'er...there was no "sermon" at the
Pittsburgh show that I went to. Doug said very little...a bit at the end
and during "Over My Head", but nothing "religious" or whatever. Something
to the effect of "I hope you're having fun, because life isn't worth living
    if you're not having fun..."

Actually, I noticed that quite often in between songs Doug went for a spray
bottle near him, plus he coughed a couple of times. Probably some kind of
    throat medicine, or something.

I couldn't agree more. Ted Kirkpatrick is a great drummer. Not as good as Portnoy, IMO, but than again, who is? :)

    > (esp. the track K517 on their latest full-length album "Vanishing > Lessons" - it's a drum solo played along to a Scarlatti harpsichord > piece).

I loved VL and "K517" at first, but now it gets on my nerves. VL is really weak compared to their other albums, as far as the drumming goes. It's still a good album, though. I'd go with maybe Psycho Surgery or Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance, both available on either Metal Blade Records or Intense Records. Both are speed metal with a classical feel/influence, especially the title track of PS and most of POD.

Note: they are a christian band...but good lyrics (not too propagandizing, 'cept for their first album Stop the Bleeding), as opposed to *most* christian bands...many medical related to spiritual themes in lyrics.

    > You also may dig Believer for some blinding time changes and some > funky time signatures and stuff. the music here can get rather > heavy at times, so you may or may not dig that.

Vocals almost remind me of Chuck Shuldiner of DEATH...at times. They've got three (out-of-print) albums, and I've only heard one of them. I can't seem to find 'em anywhere...but I'm looking.

I got it when I lived back in LA. VERY cool show. It was the one place where I could count on hearing Stu Hamm's "Lone Star" (With Eric Johnson on guitar!) on the radio from time to time. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.

And Stone Trek, too. Greg Stone hosts (Hosted? It's been a while since I lived down south) a show dedicated to progressive music. First time I ever heard Marillion on the radio! They played a fair amount of Rush, too, though not any real Prog Metal (a little Queensryche, I guess).

Hmm....that's a new spelling to me. I, too, has previously seen it Weckl. Played with Patitucci for a while....awfully good.

Extreme's a good one, too. I actually don't know that "Pornograffitti" is any better than the first album. More mature, but they're both awfully good. Actually, I like all four records. Weird radio fixation: When I was in the greater Sacramento area, I noticed one of the stations out there (The Eagle...don't remember the call letters) liked playing "Am I Ever Gonna Change," part of their big progressive piece from "Three Sides To Every Story."

    > How about the STEVE MORSE BAND'S newest release. I think Morse >gets better as he gets older, unlike RUSH. Will RUSH ever do odd times >again in any of their songs, like their older stuff? Also, speaking of >RUSH, how can I get this tribute CD that I see mixed reactions about?

Well, they're using a lot of 6's lately, I've noticed, letting phrases breathe. "Presto" had a lot of that (I suppose that doesn't really count as "lately"). "Double Agent" off "Counterparts" shifts around a little, too. But no, they certainly don't sound like they did circa "A Farewell To Kings." And, as a huge Rush fan, I don't mind. I think they've put together some awesome records over the past 10 years or so.

    >From: Scott Holthausen <smh@ldg.com> > >> I mean....GOD!!!!! ....The Sheehan stuff is more interesting that the >>originals!!!! >>(Not surprising....Billy can play circles around anyone....(including Lee, >>Hamm, and Myung)) >> > >For some real bass playing check out Michael Manring's "THONK". Yeah. There's a load of 'em, though. Sheehan playing circles around anyone? Hmm...."Nv43345" and "L.A. A La Mode" are pretty damn frightening, but I'm not sure they're any MORE frightening than "Terminal Beach," "Count Zero," or "Quahogs Anyone?" And there are other guys who can play some phenomenal stuff...Brian Bromberg, Stanley Clarke, even Adrian Davidson. Still, from a bass playing perspective, Geddy seems to play the coolest lines. Jaco, probably, would be my #2 guy.

Just to let everyone know how much of an "odd-time" freak I am, I have listened to "Learning to Live" many times, and written down every time signature in the entire song, from the 15-8 measures in the intro to the 5-8,5-8,5-8,2-4,6-8,6-8,6-8,2-4 melody taken from Wait for Sleep. I find it particular invigorating to play various odd-time songs on drums, such as many RUSH songs, ranging from La Villa Strangiato (took me probably a year to completely work this one up!) to YYZ, to Subdivisions. I LOVE playing to RUSH songs on my set. UNfortunately, my set is back in NY, so I haven't played drums since January! YIKES! Anyone live in central OK who's on this YTSEJAM talk?

Anyone else as much into transcribing and figuring out time signatures as I am?

Hey all. One of the major radio stations here in the St. Louis area (K-SHE 95 (94.7 FM)) is doing a big blood drive, and they just played the original version of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding as part of the blood drive theme. I must say that this is probably my favorite Elton john song. DT really did faithful cover of this. In fact, there were times when I almost thought it was DT's version (especially since I just listened to it yesterday). I do prefer James' voice, though.

Err...I think LatM came out after Images and Words...(there's songs from I&W on it, James sings on it, etc.). Sorry to blow a hole in your theory. :)

That's the second of third time I've seen somebody refer to the Priest tribute like it's out already. Is it? If so, what's it called? What label is it on? Who else plays on it? I need more information!! :)

Abso-FUCKING-lutely!!!!! I would say this single is a MUST-HAVE for any DT fan. The demo version of TTT on there is better than the one on I&W, IMHO.
