I just heard this CD and it sounds great. Excellent playing on all instruments, and they are really tight without sounding computerized. Marcel has a nice picking style during some of the rhythmic parts and fits well with the keyboards.
Does LEMUR VOICE play live shows? The playing and arrangements sound very well-rehearsed.

Accurate description, especially the Lemur Voice part :) I hear alot of Metropolis style writing.

I have Mastermind III, and I heard part of their soon-to-be-released disc whose name escapes me. While I don't know if I'd call it "3rd-rate", I will say that they are MUCH MUCH MUCH better live! When I saw them they seemed like a cross between DT and ELP. They play live great, they just need to work on their material, I think.

mirth- see ya friday, btw.....
yo- check it out- ibanez guitars has finally thrown up their web page, in case you didn't know.
there's some stuff there and what not, and a little picture of this long haired hippy freaked guitarist; he thinks he's so cool and all. i think his name is petrovnia, or peter piper, or john paul jones....oh shit! no, petrucci is his name!!!! yeah, check him out. if you click on the right spot of petrucci's guitar, there's a great link to a nude women's page! check it out!!!
on the subject of tributes, i'm just waiting to see what would happen in a crimson tribute. now THAT would be a sick little album. of course, with my faith in bands doing tributes greatly eroded after hearing the yes tribute (btw, cd still for sale, and i want to get rid of it asap. also many others), it would probably blow...so oh well.....
peace out. and remember, who loves ya (your mom).

I've been lurking. . .
Ytsejam is a new friend.
I found WM in Portland (Or). In a word - awesome! I'm not sure what the fuss is with Anthem? The CD J-Card and insert really does justice. In everyway they put Rush first. The art direction of the back cover - putting the authors in white vs the track titles in magenta - the effect pulls the authors off the background. Nice touch! The Steve Streeter comments really strike a chord with me. I've been a Rush "person" since that fateful day in September 1980 when Spirit of the Radio turned me on. (I remember the exact time of day) Streeter says it all - Rush has the power to change the direction of peoples lives. It changed mine. I've grown, Rush has grown. Although, I lean toward the early years. The new release will be as entrancing as ever. If anything, the tribute should turn a new generation (DT/Fates/etc.) onto the genius of Rush. The WM performances are simply interpretations of the originals. Not to replace them (nothing can replace the original La Villa Strangato) but, for me, it simply enhances the focus of the originals.
If you can, get a copy. The talent and freedom expressed will amaze you. Geddy, Neal and Alex should be proud of spawning such creativity.

Another few cents on Working Man:
I'm not a Rush fan (Own one CD -- bought it a few months ago only) and after hearing WM I want to hear more (I never heard Analog Kid until WM, now I want it) but, until the legal issues are resolved, I will not buy any more Rush Cd's and will probablyy buy the rest of the Magna Carta CD's that I don't have just to put my money where I think it should go.

I posted this not too long ago, but I thought I'd ask again since I got no responses. Recently, I saw an Iron Maiden box set (3 CDs) in the import section of a local new/used music store (Now Hear This in Fairview Heights, IL). Anyway, it was called something like "Lords of the Twilight," and had some rare/live tracks and stuff on it. One of the tracks was even evidently from a Bruce Dickinson audition tape. The price on it was $75. Id it worth it? I've never seen it before, or even heard of it. Anyone out there know about it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi everybody! Time to say a thing or two.
1. I know a lot of you also subscribe to TNMS, so you probably noticed the post from the guy who had the idea for TNMSers to produce their very own Rush tribute album. Hmm.....
2. The prog tape swapping idea is great. I really don't care what people send me (it might change my ideas about the boundaries of progressive music), but I know some people on this list wouldn't care for music that I would put on my three tapes that I send out. Also, I presume that the 3 mix tapes I send out can contain the exact same music, right? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
3. Even though I did stop reading click-track posts after a while, I wouldn't want a single thing about the jam to change. It's just about perfect the way it is. Which says something about all of you that have posted during my Ytse(life)Span.
4. I look forward to hearing some acoounts of DS' b'day party. Sure would like to go, but Long Island is quite a drive from here.
Thank y'all very much

Ok, I don'tr post much but this is something that I feel real strongly about. So, here I go.!! First, Rush is a wonderful band. They are without a doubt one of my biggest influences musically and have matured as musicians and grown A LOT over the years. I have done nothing more but enjoy listening to them and learning from their music. So when I found out that musicians were getting together to tribute the band they love just as I do, I got psyched really fast.:) I was like, "cool, John Petrucci, my favorite guitarist is on it. Wow, MIke Portnoy, my favorite drummer is on it." I was so thrilled to hear that some wonderful musicians were getting together to tribute one of the greatest bands to ever exist. I went out and bought the album right away ans totally fell in love with Working Man. I played if for friend Dean who is a gigantic Rush fan and probably the pickiest musician in existence. And he picked Working Man apart. Even down to the cymbal crashes and the places that the various drummers chose to strike their hi-hats.:) but overall, he liked it ALOT also. So, then I come to find out about this trouble that magna carta is getting from Rush and their management. Call me old fashioned, but nothing upsets me more when someone goes against the values that they so strongly stood for in the first place. Maybe I am just too much of a dreamer( no pun intended to DT):). But I would lilke to think people would still have some sort of principal and stand up for what they believe no matter what. Referance intended to "Spirit of Radio" and the current situation.:) I have rambled long enough, last paragraph, I promise.:) So, I put myself in this position. What if I "Robert Barker", was asked to play on this tribute. I would have said, "hell yeah, I would love to." so I go into the studio, record my guitar parts, and leave being content to the fact that I payed respect to one of the bands that I love. Then I find out that that respect that I offered to rush is returned with the this respect, "that the very band that I learned from and admired, that I respected and showed my appreciation to by tributing them, is going to dwtroy the labe that released it along with the bands signed by that label that are trying to fullfil their musical visions and their dreams of a respectable career also. It is just one big damn shame.
Sorry abou the long post, but I never post. so you all had it coming.:) See everyone at Derek sherinian's B-day party, I will attend. Paying respect to another band that I admire GREATLY. Hell, I have put over 1500 miles on my car just driving to John Petrucci clinics:) sese ya, Robert Barker (Ibanez on IRC) E-mail, Ibanez@dreamt.org

I enjoyed reading your critique about James LaBrie and the others with whom you've compared him.
JLB does some low-range work here and there, "Space-Dye Vest" being slightly out of my vocal range (3 octaves from Cs, but I'm female)... Not low enough for a technical discussion, since that is his speaking range. Still, he sings it softly which requires (IMHO) more control than belting out hoping to be on key.
I'd like to know if there is a newsgroup devoted to vocalists. I haven't been able to find one in the rec.music-makers hierarchy and would truly love to see what others have to say regarding technique. I've only just begun formal training, and while I thought I sounded pretty good already (modest, much? sorry) there appears to be a lot of room for improvement. But then, I never tried opera before, just church choir and public-school vocal music class.
I think I'm the only person I know who favours _Awake_ over _Images and Words_, if only for its more diverse vocal --and musical-- styles. The band really grew with that album. Hopefully they won't go rap, though it would be an interesting listen. The same way Bob Dole's acceptance speech was ... interesting.

...i would like to say that a certain DT fan over here is getting sick and tired of hearing about the damn rush tribute ...
i think i was born too late, or got into music too late for me to appreciate rush. now, here comes the cannon fodder: i like peart's drumming; alex's guitarwork is kinda, cheesy at times, but good at others. and the singing ... i dunno, the lyrics don't quite match the music and sometimes everything sounds so contrived ... and yes, i am talking about the "counterparts" album. i'm just lookin for something meatier. if you think i'm looking for something more, say, poppy, you're wrong. i like popular music as well as pretty cruddy music (they might be giants .... i love them) but rush just annoys me, almost as much as meatloaf annoys me and even more than michael bolton ... :)
lighter, cooler note: just got my ozric tentacles cd, "jurassic shift" from musicboulevard today. good price, about $13.72 or so. if you're into ambient music with kickass TASTEFUL lead and synth, get this. it's groovy, danceable, instrumental, has some very TALENTED musicians and is just downright great for partays!

Hey,
I have a copy of the Lemur Voice album "Insights" (release date Sept 10th) and please allow me to place a hearty plug for the album.
This is probably the best Magna Carta Band to be released this year. "Insights" It's defintely the closest Magna Carta band to the Dream Theater style, yet they are their own band.
I would recommend this album to any progressive rock fan.

Greetings fellow Jammers,
As those of you that are keeping up with your Jams lately are aware, I'm conducting a tape swap to introduce people to new bands that they may never have heard of... or maybe let someone hear some songs by bands they've heard mentioned, but would like to hear some music before they buy an album on a recommendation.
I've got about 15 people signed up so far... hoping to break last time around's participation of about 30. So, if you'd like to participate in this just e-mail me and let me know.
E-mail me at: tapeswap@reich.uark.edu
Include: your name, e-mail address, and postal address
Here's how it works: you make a compilation tape of songs by bands that aren't very well-known (Ivanhoe, Shadow Gallery, Anacrusis, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Superior, Galactic Cowboys, etc... basically anything but Dream Theater, Queensryche, and Rush is fair game... just use your own judgement)... you make three copies... send these to three different people... in turn, you receive three tapes from three other people. Everyone listens to the tapes and broadens their listening horizons... sound cool? Well, e-mail me to sign up and I'll send you the full details of what you need to do.
Thanks for your time, DrX (Ed Reed)
