    Hello!

I listened to it some time ago, because I wanted to check if James appears on
it. He doesn't. Everyone talks about James singing on the Priest Tribute, but
I get the feeling I heard the wrong one or something.

Devin Townsend is on it, BTW ;-)))

Hi, My name is Marcel Coenen, I play the guitarparts on the song Freewill on
    the Rush Tribute "Working Man".
I'm just curious about what people think of the parts we played (our singer
sings also on the song Freewill) and I just want to say that we are bringing
out ouw own album out at the 2nd of september in Europe and a week later in
    the U.S.
The bandname we play in is called "LEMUR VOICE", before it was called AURA
but we had to change it because of the fact that there were some bands
called this way. The CD-title is called "Insights".
The style is a bit between Dream Theater/Rush/Queensrijche and Lemur Voice,
so people who are interested they just can go check it out.
I hope some people will give us comments about the song Freewill, I really
like the whole CD Working Man and I think Rusjh has to be glad that there
are musicians who really like their music and just want to give them a
tribute, just for them, so, if people want to write me about it here's my
    personal E-mail address: mcoenen@cobweb.nl.
Take care you DT-fans and check out our album coming out !!

I was perusing the collection of a local cd store the other day and
I spotted two awesome finds: Dali's Car "The Waking Hour" (which is usually
available only as an import) and Echolyn "As the World" (they wanted only
$2.99!!!). I'd never heard Echolyn (how do you pronounce it?), but I was
hooked as soon as I heard the intro. They rock...
Do we know for sure that Rush was the one fighting the tribute and
not their management? (I'm a bit out of touch...)
            Uhh...I think that's it...like the new .sig?

    Message-ID: <321A5EB5.3E5@umbc.edu>

    Hello Ytsefans,

    The Tribute
    -----------
I tried to find it today at my local Record and Tape Traders (they stock
a lot of rare and import disks as well as the major label stuff). The
clerk told me that they still haven't gotten any in, though about 10
people have asked for it at that local store. He said that they are
going to be getting some in since the demand is there. I don't believe
that Magna Carta is pulling disks, Rush's management is probably using
their ties at Atlantic/Anthem to make it difficult for Magna Carta to get
distribution for their disks. Slipping some bribes or incentives to
certain key individuals, stuff like that. That is probably why we are
hearing that the album has been pulled.

    Atlantic Records
    ----------------
They are truly becoming a force of evil in the universe. After dropping
Kings X, and helping Rush in their crusade against Magna Carta what else
    will they do, who knows?

    Rush and Their Management
    -------------------------
I have to agree with Rick (Toronto's most vocal rep.) that this whole
thing is very silly and immature on the part of Rush. They are all
multi-millionares, so some musicians want to pay tribute to them, what is
the worst that could happen? Fans of the musicians on the tribute buy
the album, then they gain exposure to Rush's composition. Then people
buy more Rush albums from the back catalog. The Horror! People may
purchase more albums because of this.

    Test For Echo
    -------------
Ever since Roll the Bones came out, I have been getting very tired of
what Rush considers "quality" music. They are free to make whatever
music they want to make, but the question is, is it really what they want
to do? Or are they too afraid of being termed as dinosaurs like Yes,
ELP, Genesis, and King Crimson. They should take a lesson from King
Crimson and embrace the label like an old friend returned from afar.
"I'm a dinosaur!" and I really don't give a damn, I will make my music
and the fans will buy it if they think it is worthy. Counterparts has
Neil's worst lyrics (I enjoy his Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure,
and Presto lyrics the best), and the guitar is back in the forefront, but
Alex really isn't doing anything creative with it. I hope Test for Echo
moves in some new direction, or at least in some direction that they
haven't explored for a while. Well, that is my want list.

    Comments
    --------
There are lots of small bands playing their heart out, trying to create
music and make a living doing it. Labels like Magna Carta, and other
small labels attempt to get the music distributed to people who want to
listen. Rush, the band who once wrote, "One likes to believe in the
freedom of music" is trying to destroy a label that gives new bands a
chance. That is truly the act of a washed-up band, someone ought to do a
    tribute album. <grin>

    BUYER BEWARE:

I warn you to listen to Leviathan first. I've had this album for
over a year, and I never once put it at that level. The guitars are
a bit on the sloppy and uncreative side, and I personally think that
this singer is pretty horrible (I judge it by the fact that I
consider myself a poor-mediocre singer, and I think I am far beyond
this guy)... he sounds like he's totally scared or nervous, and
young. If they are still together I certainly hope that this dude
    has progressed.

Thank you a MILLION for James Murphy's e mail address.... whoever
posted it. I hope it's the real guy, and not some scamming AOL dork.

In line with my last e mail, I'd like to say that I bought Mastermind
III while on vacation this weekend, and I find it to be absolutely
3rd rate in every aspect. I put Leviathan at 2nd rate and bands like
DT and FW at the top. Just beware... listen before you buy... and
don't believe the salesman if he tells you that the album can't be
gotten for less than $30 (which I heard at one store before buying
    mine for $15).

I think you should cut Tim a little more slack. I've had several dealings
with him on various CDs and a videotape. For a college student, he's
unusually prompt. There was a bit of a delay in me getting my videotape,
but a few e-mails between me and him back and forth (yes, he DOES answer
his e-mails!!!) resolved it fairly quickly, and I can still call myself a
satisfied customer. Anyway, if you want to find out what Tim's up to, you
should send a message to HIM, not the Jam.
That's all I wanted to say. I just wanted to quash this speculation as
soon as I could, because as far as I can tell, Tim has a really good rep
on the Jam and the comparison to Al made me a bit uneasy.

Which one of those musicians do you think is going to make a big
profit off of ANYTHING Mike Varney has his greedy little paws in?
Which one of those musicians do you think needs the money?

    > Maybe Magna Carta's upset because Rush apparently changed their tune
    > half-way through the process. Still, if you're a responsible Magna Carta

    > down as an embarrassing loss. RUSH has the final say in where their
    > music is and isn't sold and they have EVERY RIGHT to withhold this CD.
    > Isn't that the way it should be?

No. It's not a RUSH cd. It's their music, but the purpose is to
show some creative variations of RUSH music... not to get a replica
of the original. Now, if you said that Rush wanted to pull it
because Mark Slaughter sings on it, then I would say more power to
you. (J/K, although I can't listen to that song and frequently use
it to punish my gf )

    > "Yeah, but Rush is being greedy and childish by not allowing this to happen."
    >
    > But aren't you yourself being greedy when you cry that "Working Man" isn't
    > as widespread as YOU'D like it to be?

How so? Because I want to spend my hard earned money on a cd, and
want it to be available for all who would do the same? I have a
copy, and I have had it since it came out. I'm opposed to the
discontinuation of this album because I think everyone should be able
to hear this stuff. That's the reason it was recorded.... not so
that the three of us who bought the album could spend eternity
dubbing it for the masses. (exaggeration. Don't argue that point,
    please)

    > People, they're Rush and they can do what they damn well please and it
    > shouldn't really matter to us WHAT their motives are. If they don't like
    > the COVER ART, that's reason enough for them to pull it. (Somehow I think
    > it's more than that. ;) They made the music - they should control the
    > flow of it, not some fledgling Prog-label.

If they agreed to it in the beginning, they should not be able to
stop it. Hell... if it's legal in any way for these guys to have
done the album without Rush giving it the thumbs up, then this album
has a right to be heard.

    > I admire Magna Carta's idea. They put together a heck of an album, but
    > before all of that, they should have been ROCK SOLID in the legal
    > department and they obviously goofed here and hopefully it won't cost
    > them too much. It's a hell of a label they've got going.

They won't go under. It's partially owned by Mike Varney... Owner of
Shrapnel records. He is a sponge.

    > So don't get down on Rush. Admire them that they have the courage to
    > fight for what they believe in, even if it happens to disagree with your
    > greedy little tastes... ;)

Again, how is it greedy of us? And why should I admire someone who
wants to stiffle in *any* way the flow of good music?

    > With all of that said and done, I'm content to watch the market-value of
    > my personal copy of Working Man skyrocket in value. Heeheeheeheehee!!!!!

Is that it? Do you just want this album to be worth a bundle? Well
folks, I just bought two copies of the album for jammers. If anyone
else on the jam can't find it, let me know FAST. I still know where
I can find at least two more copies.

Note, Teethster, I'm not flaming you at all. I will publicly
apologize and re-word myself if you think this came off arrogant or
angry. I just disagree very much with your statement.

While in Hollywood this weekend I got a new Buckethead album which is
not really released widely. It's called Giant Robot, but it's not
the Japanese album he did by that name. If you can find this album,
MAN, MY GOD, Wow! Buy it. The chicken boy can play.
