Hey,
The only reason that store do not have "Working Man" in stock at
the moment is that Magna Carta simply ran out of the disc. They terribly
underestimated it's selling potential.
Fear not! They are pressing more at this time and will be in
stores shortly. Patience my friends.

Well with the rumor (is this unconfirmed?) that WM was being pulled I
started calling/hitting every record store and:
Record and Tape Traders (Catonsville): "We are out of them. Dundalk store has
them"
Record and tape traders (Towson): "We are out of them"
Kemp Mill (Columbia): "Not Yet"
Borders (Columbia): "We have one according to the computer. Let me go
make sure..........Sorry we sold that copy."
I then visited Best Buy (Columbia) the above Borders and Planet
Music(Westview) with no luck.
I still have the cd on order via cdconnection (over two 1/2 weeks now).
I give up.

Good Afternoon,
Let me commence by saying that my post, stating that Working
Man has been pulled, appears to be in err. A post in Jam 1766 (I
forget who originally posted this) contains information from MC
directly denying their removal of the product from the shelves. My
apologies to anyone who was unnecessarily stressed by this. :)
Kudos to MC for sticking to their guns! Buffalo here I come!!

Actually, I think James is on volume two. The tribute is a two
volume affair and I have yet to find the second volume in Toronto. How
is Volume 1?

I am going to Buffalo this week to find this thing! If I can
afford to purchase multiple copies of the disc, I will. I may be able
to pick up a couple extra, but please, no mass requests from Canadian
jammers. I have some personal shopping to do too! :)
If I DO get extras, I will post to that effect here and it
will be a first come first served approach for Canadian jammers. I
won't be scalping it. You'll be getting it for cost + US exchange +
any duties at the border (damn customs!!).
I don't mean to snub any of the jammers in other parts of the
world, but my countrymen and I MUST get this disc! :) You should be
able to get copies indefinitely based on Magna Carta's recent
response.
I need the names and locations of any major US record chains
in the Buffalo area. This is a rush request (no pun intended)!! I will
have a chance to check for e-mail and jams tomorrow morning prior to
leaving Toronto at around 9 am, but that will be it.
Thanks for your assistance! It is GREATLY appreciated!
Wish me luck!
Cheers,
Rick

You are correct... that's probably the easiest way to do it. Or, if you
want you can do what one guy did last time: he e-mailed the three guys he
was assigned to send tapes to... then kinda tailored each of the tapes he
mailed out to the individual he was sending it to... let them tell him,
'I've already got Shadow Gallery, so leave that off'... or 'I keep
hearing a lot about Superior, but haven't heard anything so put that
on'... a pretty good idea I thought. But, I'm gonna leave it up to the
individuals to decide how to do their tapes, what bands to include,
whether you want to put 2-3 songs by each band on so as to give more of an
impression of a band, etc.
And if somebody doesn't approve of your tapes... maybe there will be
*one* band on there that they fall in love with... in that case, the
mission has still been accomplished. And the worst case scenario is they
just erase the tape and use it as a blank.

This might bring on flames, but I haven't seen anyone state this side of
the story on the Rush/Magna Carta debate.
Rush has every right to be pissed at the tribute. It was, after all, only
cleared by Magna Carta through Rush's MANAGEMENT, and when the actual BAND
got wind of it, they did not like the idea. THEN the legal battles began.
-It IS poorly recorded or mixed or whatever. I like the CD, but had I never
heard any Rush music, this would not convert me.
-No songs from Power Windows, nor any from the past 10 years. Is is
misrepresentative of their career. Whether the intent is there or not, this
seems to imply that none of this material is worth a tribute. Hence the
idea that Rush is a "dead" band.
-It is perfectly understandable for an artist or artists NOT to want their
craft represented by another artist.
-The guitar solos are all wanky.
-Neil's words are used without permission.
Don't get me wrong, I like the CD. I just don't think everyone should slag
Rush. And, waiting 2 weeks for the new CD wonnnn't help anything to help.
Some people actually wait that long anyway, and it will only confirm the
band's thought that the tribute CD will discourage record sales.

Hi Kevin,
I never had an opportunity to see you with your old band mates
(Dream Theater) when you were in Toronto, but I wanted to take the
opportunity to compliment you on the intelligence and sensitivity of
your composition skills. Your work flows well both lyrically and
musically.
Do you have any plans to tour at all in the near future? I
haven't yet had the opportunity to order your new material and was
wondering what it might sound like. Do you have any samples at your
web page? I know, questions, questions, questions!!! :)
Well, I wish you well in your future endeavors. Should you
ever plan to come through Toronto, there are a great many of us who
would love to talk with you. Naturally, that includes the obligatory
Canadian beer. ;)
Lastly, for what it's worth, I still prefer your playing to
Derek's. Although it is often said that imitation is the most sincere
form of flattery, your lines are still the originals. Art cannot be
duplicated.
Well, I guess that's enough ass kissing for today. :)
All the best to you!

Rick,
Thanks for the kind words.
No plans for a tour just yet. Right now I'm working on a new album
that
i'll be releasing through my own label in late Fall. Mark has just
finished his drum trax.
My page has some WAV files you can check out, and I'll be updating it
soon
with details regarding the new album.

So there you have it. I have since checked out the samples on
the Chromakey page. The stuff is interesting although I think I like
his more aggressive material with DT better. The new stuff seems to be
a continuation of the Space Dye Vest sound. Does anyone have the full
tape or Kevin's other demos? It seems to me that Jennifer (Airdance)
had both at one time, but I believe that she has since changed her
e-mail address and I can't find it. Does anyone know what the new one
is?
In any case, I would love to see a comprehensive review of the
stuff.
Thanks for reading!
My God! I'm under 200 lines in a single post!! ;)

You forgot that "mission" from HYF is on the tribute. But other than that
they mostly did tribute to songs from the late 70s/early 80s era.

Here's my .02 on the Working Man record:
1 - I've heard from Magna Carta as well and the album has indeed NOT been pulled.
2 - To the retailers charging $25 for a copy, thank them for their time, as you will be
shopping elsewhere from now on.
3 - Regarding Rush's personal permission to record versions of their songs, IT ISN'T
NEEDED. As far as I've heard, Rush doesn't own the rights to their songs (I could be
wrong). This means that the band doesn't even have to know if someone is recording
their songs, as long as they get their royalty checks. Case in point, the Beatles don't
own their songs (actually Michael Jackson does). If Michael wants to use Revelotion in
a sneaker comercial (he did), then it happens (unfortunately).
4 - Test For Echo just dropped from my "must buy" list to my "wait for the cutout or buy
it used" list. You're welcome.
5 - Magna Carta has done a great job of trying to expose new artists as opposed to the
same old crap being served. Count how many time people have written about Shadow
Gallery (brillant), Cairo (suberb), Enchant (excellant) or Altura (decent record) lately
Now reduce that to zero without support from a small label like MC.
I've been a Rush fan since 1979. They've always had a very open attitude on what
theyy've wanted to do. It's a shame they forget that. I guess the Ferrieri must be in
their way...
Flame me if you must, but I feel that Rush should back off and let the customers decide
what they or don't like. I don't like their version of censorship.

Many bands' first album or two are their best and then they lose the
edge. DT doesn't seem to suffer from that problem :)
