    >Great Moment #2: Asking Mike about his first demo (Rising Power?
Rising Force? >Whatever.) We told him how cheesy we thought the front
pic was. He said, That's >nothing. The inside picture is a mugshot of
me when I got arrested. Go buy it. Don't >listen to it, but check out
    the pictures. :)

It's Rising Power, and I agree. The pictures of Mike are awesome. :)
It's totally worth buying all the old demos and everything just to see
    the funky pictures.

So DO buy Rising Power, but DO listen to it too! It rules! My favorite
song is Teenage Trauma. And Mike's drumming is, of course, out of this
    world even at age 17.

Take care now. Bye bye then ;)

Just drove 60 miles to see Yngwie last night,
while the rest of you were watching Derek, et al.
Wow, Yngwie was *fat* and really balding. None
of which affected his guitar-playing, mind you.
I had never seen him in concert, and had only seen
his pictures in the cd booklets, etc. He must airbrush
the chins or something, and color in the scalp.
    Anyway, physical appearance notwithstanding,
Yngwie can fuckin' smoke on the guitar. He had all
of his lame 80's tricks going like flinging the guitar
in the air, around his back, throwing it to Mats on the
keys, etc. He was SOOOOO full of himself it was actually
embarassing, but I repeat, he can still smoke on the
guitar. Mark Boals was back, and if Yngwie's hair
was laughable, this guy's looked like a three foot
Davy Crocket hat. He sounded good, but he was relegated
to the side of the stage, out of Yngwie's way. Tommy Aldridge
was on the kit, and he did his trademark "bongo" drum solo,
etc. It was an 80's flashback, complete with twirling
drumsticks. Yngwie was tossing picks right and left, and there
were enough people treating them like gold to satisfy his
highness. He played a bunch of covers from his upcoming
"Inspirations" album, including "Gates of Babylon," "Manic
Depression," "Carry on My Wayward Son" and maybe something
else. I missed the first half hour, so I can't tell you what else.
So, do breast implants increase tips to a bartender? Just
wondering. Like I said, if Yngwie couldn't play, this would have
been a debacle in the tradition of "fat elvis." Oh, yeah. The
volume was way too loud. What's up with that? There was
this guy right up front flipping off Yngwie the whole night
with both hands. Yngwie somehow managed to ignore him.

Hiya, kids. It's sunday, and i'm still not over how great ethyl mertz was.

I actually have a question for some of you. Mike mention to me that i should get Spock's Beard, but i've been unable to find it. Anyone know of a good place to get (or order) it?

You know, Ibanez an I rehearsed for the con yesterday (we're performing i think), and man, can that boy play. i think i have to dig out my old accoustic (and no, i don't play....well) and jam. oh, is con gonna be fun.

to tim lodge (if he's watching): answer my e-mails. i want to know where my cd's are, considering you cashed my checks quickly enough. you fuck me over, and ALOT of people will not buy your matierials. Don't be a dick, man. Either gimme my money back or send me the cd's you promised. At least have the decency of answering my e-mails.

blah. that's all i really have to say. i feel like shit. this is not a good thing, espically since the g/f spent the night. hmm. time to go into ytseland.

it's funny. i just finished reading the last digest and saw someone mention how Mike Portnoy really digs Pantera. For those of you who don't believe this to be true, here's some proof. Last night, i was at the White Zombie/Pantera concert at the Meadowlands in Jersey. My buddy and I were getting ready to go into the general admission area when i just happened to turn around. the next words out of my mouth were "HOLY SHIT!" who is it that i see? Mike. he was walking out of the "authorized personnel only" area. i called out "MIKE," he looked over at me, smiled, said "What's up" and kept going. Definitely couldn't hold it against him for keeping walking. the last thing he probably wants on a casual night out is to be swamped by people.

btw, the concert rocked. WZ was great (definitely not lip-synched like some people have said in the past) and Pantera rocked. my only gripe was that Pantera didn't play for all that long (maybe an hour and a half).

    Good afternoon,

    YES! WAHOO!!!!!

I finally picked up a copy of Working Man!! (power smile)

It is an excellent disc overall, and sounds to me like Rush might have sounded if they had more 80's metal influences when originally writing the material.

Canadians in southern Ontario and upstate New Yorkers!!!

If you are looking for this disc, call the Media Play outlet in Niagara Falls NY at (716) 297-7691 (FAX: (297-1822)). I got the last of 60 copies they had. Can you picture someone jumping up and down while holding a CD? However, while I was there, they called their warehouse and told me that there were another 28 copies of the disc there which they could have shipped to them. They may not be able to send mail order to Canada, but it is only a 1.5 hour drive from Toronto. Come on! It would take you the same amount of time to get there that it would to watch a bad movie on video! The disc was $12.99 US plus 7% sales tax= $13.90 US/$19.46 CDN. If you order this from Magna Carta, it will cost you $15.98 US plus $5.00 shipping= $20.98 US/$30.28 CDN. The savings is obvious, and you won't have to wonder if it got lost in the mail. Chances are that you'll buy several discs while there, so don't factor your gas cost in just yet. :) The store is located here:

Milpine Plaza 8440-60 Niagara Falls Blvd. Niagara Falls, NY 14304

If you want specific directions, contact me via e-mail. They stock Crimson Glory discs here (this was for the jammer who asked me what I thought about them) and have Transcendence for $9.99 US. I paid $26.98 for this in Toronto as a US import. This is a good disc and is a steal at that price. Here are my WM opinions. Don't worry, I'll keep it under 300 lines. :)

    Negatives ---------------

    1. George Lynch/Mark Slaughter

This guy has no understanding of how to adapt his soloing style to another's music. Someone should have told him that this wasn't a Dokken record. (I actually like Dokken) The leads are all wanky and they actually annoyed me more than Mark Slaughter's bat's mating call vocals. If you're gonna sing Anthem, you have to scream it! :)

    2. Eric Martin

While Eric is a melodic singer, he just doesn't have the passion needed to sing Mission properly. Geddy strains on the original, giving it a sense of urgency. That is lacking with Eric however, and the song comes off like a walk in the park vocally. Instrumentally, it is a great track.

    3. Devin Townsend/Natural Science

After listening to NS 5 times, I can say that the more restrained portions of his singing sound fine. Instrumentally, this track is near perfect.

However..... (attack mode on) What the fuck was this guy thinking with that god damn death metal screaming!!?? That is easily the worst vocal performance on the disk. He should have his ass kicked until his nose bleeds for desecrating that track. I'm all for interpretation, but that's pushing the envelope a little too far. (attack mode off) If they wanted to give him something where he could scream fittingly, they should have given him Temples of Syrinx.

    Puzzlers ------------

Is it just me, or is Mike Baker's vocal line at the beginning of The Trees out of sync. It seems to be dragging a little. Otherwise an excellent job.

    Positives -------------

    1. James/Red Barchetta - This is my favorite vocal and overall track on the record. To quote many, "It rockz nadz!!". :) YOU GO JAMES!!!!!! Man, you had your sound hooked up on this one!!! You do Toronto proud with your interpretation of this one!!

    2. Working Man/Bytor - Nice work, particularly on the two guitar interpretation of the main instrumental theme. If only someone had given James a lyric sheet for that one line. ;) James sounds great on this track, but I would have liked to hear more of his trademark sound in the interpretation.

    3. Analog Kid - Very tasty. Different but not unpleasant vocal interpretation by Jack Russell. Nice interpretation of the lead by Michael Romeo. What does Symphony X sound like? This may be in my purchasing future.

    4. La Villa - I like this quite a bit. I do miss Alex's solo a little, but the interpretation Steve Morse puts in is still interesting. I'm just used to Alex's fretwork here. Nice drum work Mr. Portnoy! Mr. Sheehan smokes as per usual.

    5. Jacob's Ladder - This was a surprise for me. Although I love the original, I don't listen to it that often any more. Seb's vocals were a very pleasant surprise here particularly, in the latter half. Way to go! Another lad from TO makes good! :) JP. Is there anything that this guy can't add class to? That tone and vibrato are unmistakable. Excellent work John! Am I the only one who would like to hear John do some rock interpretations of classical guitar or orchestral pieces? John plays more like a violinist at times than a guitarist. His sense of melody reminds me of that instrument. Maybe I'm just crazy. :)

    6. Fates Warning/Closer to the Heart - God bless you guys!! What a beautiful version of a classic. Jim's solo is perfect, and his add on is arguably the most tasteful one on the record. I too wish that they had kept going. I was VERY into that 2112 excerpt at the end. :)

    7. YYZ - Bravo!!!! Cheer!!! Applaud!!! This is the best interpretation of any track on the disc from a straight musical standpoint. James Murphy, you almost brought a tear to my eye with your lead on this one. What a fantastic tribute this is to the band! I know it's already been mentioned, but I would like more information about James past work with other bands, solo stuff, e-mail address, anything! This guy not only can play, but he has obviously listened CAREFULLY to Alex's work on the originals. His work throughout the record is tasteful and demonstrates an advanced mastery of Lifesonism.

    8. Freewill - I'm neutral on this one vocally. Not mind boggling, not bad. Solid, like the original. Marcel!!!! Where did this guy come from!? Is this JP's long lost brother? I really find myself thinking of John's I&W tone on this track and I love the sweeping arpeggiated playing during the solo. I think you said that your band was originally called Aura and is now Lemur Voice. I would like any catalog numbers or information that you, or anyone else here, can provide for your material.

So that's it. I can honestly say that it was the 85 mile drive to pick this up! Many thanks to those of you who posted your enthusiastic reviews!

    Cheers,

    Rushin' Rick Toronto

Oh yeah. Man, am I stupid. I should have thought about that. I knew about them opening for DT a while back, and I have even heard them some on the radio here in recent monehts. Actually, to be honest (now don't quote me on this), I THINK I remember hearing something about them playing a festival here in St. Louis sometime soon (Pointfest 6 - yeah, it's a big alternafest), but I could be WAY wrong on that one, though (I did hear them o that radio station, however, so...). Could I get some details on the con? I deleted all the jams with the info. Chances are, I won't be able to make it, seeing as how it's a pretty far drive from here, and I'm not exactly overflowing with cash, but hey, stranger things have happened. Thanks a bunch. Cheers.

James generally pronounces it as Yet-say-jam on boots. We really need to get a Ytesjam taped interview with the band at the CON and put this stuff out as a sort of audio FAQ on a web page. Now how many mailing lists could make that claim! ;) Speaking of the CON, at this point, I'm still going. Sorry to disappoint you. ;) I need directions for getting from the airport to the hotel as quickly as possible. My last trip to NYC has some unpleasant moments when I got lost and I would prefer not to be robbed/assaulted/murdered at La Guardia. Better yet, could a local could meet me at the airport? I will buy you a drink on sight! This will be my first trip by plane (yes really) and I'm probably going to be traveling alone. I'm a little nervous about it. I will probably be traveling on Air Canada or Canadian airlines with British Airways a possible third choice. I will post any good deals on airfare being offered by the airlines in Canada for the week of the trip.

hmmmmmmmmmmm Looks like I found a nominee for the Artist Formerly Known as Prince "Get Over Yourself" award. If you were stupid enough to buy one of Tim Lodge's overly priced CD's and you got taken, then that's your problem. Don't bring the rest of us into it.

All I can say is that was the most fun I've ever had at a concert. The guys took every opportunity to jam and to involve the audience in all the songs. Lots of songs from Ear Candy and King's X with a couple from each of the other albums. The highlights were Over My Head where the audience did an a capella rendering of the chorus while the band cheered us on and Goldilox, the finale, where Doug pulled about 20 people out of the crowd and let them sing into the mics while the band played. The Galactic Cowboys were in prime form and played all of my favorites from all three albums. Will Farkas came out and did some really weird vocals for a completely impromptu jam with KX. Best $12 I ever spent on a concert. BTW, I found out about a limited edition European comp. CD with stuff from DT, FW, Vanden Plas, Shadow Gallery, Magellan and more. The first band, who didn't get to play due to PA problems, was called Tiles and had a newsletter with more info. I heard one song from their CD and it sounded pretty good. They are a Detroit prog band with strong DT and Rush influences, although I thought they sounded more like new style Rush. The newsletter seemed to indicate that they are somewhat popular in Europe. I'll post more about the comp. CD and Tiles' CD when I get them.

Attention! I was watching cyberlife on the discovery channel and they had a bit about www.ffly.com. It looked pretty cool so i went there and it has prog stuff galore! if you have www access go there now! You can even look up my ffly page and write me a note My alias is Wuth (Wuth rhymes with foot). What you do is type in some bands that you like and it recommends other stuff that you would like. They also have a section that reviews every single prog band in existance and it has sound bytes for most of them. they also have good deals for ordering stuff. It is super cool. They have chat rooms too so we could get a group together and chat about prog stuff in there since nobody's ever on #ytsejam. Remember: go to http://www.ffly.com as soon as you get done reading this you''ll not regret it.

Suz thus decreed the following in Ytsejam #1773:

    >I just got a rather interesting e'mail from Kevin... did any of you knwo he >doesn't actually want MMTBH circulating?? Yah... he said it wasn't his >idea to put them public... so, how'd THAT happen??

If Jen Albert doesn't give you a reply on this, I'd suggest writing to her (AirDance@aol.com). She is a personal friend of Kev's and the one that had permission to start the tape project. That seems contradictory that he would allow Jen to do that and later state that he didn't want the demos circulating. The only stipulation (at that time) that had been placed on MMTBH was that dubs could never be sold - no money was ever to exchange hands. (In fact, the first gen dubs had caseliners stating as much.)

    Hey Jammers,

It's been a while since my last post, but I am too busy working on my homepage. Bad excuse I know but it's a timeconsuming job :)

    1. Working Man:

I bought it, and I must say I'm pretty impressed with it. Here's my impression on the album:

I like: Working Man, By-Tor.., Analog Kid (yes!) The Trees, La Villa..., Jacob's Ladder, Closer to the Heart, Natural Science (al- though I don't really like Devin Townshend's vocals too much), YYZ (ofcourse), Red Barchetta (JLB sounds great on this one) and Freewill (congratulations Marcel Coenen and Gregoor van der Loo)

I don't like: obviously Mission (yech! Eric Martin really sucks), and Anthem (don't like the song, but it sounds good)

Also the DT members who participated on this album did a great job. A great compilation and a *must* buy for every Rush/DT fan.. IMO!

    2. Ytsejam, and it's pronunciation

As I am from Holland, I pronounce it as ---- Eye-Tsuh-Jam ---- How about that? :)

    3. Derek's birthday bash

You guys don't wanna know how incredibly jealous I am about the people who were there! Must've been pretty cool.

Finally I would like to invite everyone to visit my DT page on the net. ALthough it is not completely finished, you can go there already. Let me know what you guys think about it...
