A friend of mine is looking to buy a portable CD player, and is soliciting

Well, I can tell you this.
I am not the girlfriend of a DT fan.
     I am not "prepubescent".
I am also not fond of being told that because I am female my appearance on the
jam is less, more or of different importance.

No, you will never see me walking around in a Ytesjam Tee bragging about how
I "met the band" or "got a cool bootleg". But, I don't think that has anything
to do with my appriciation of their music.
Firstly, because I've been an active part of the East Coast music scene since
they were called majesty and weren't nearly as good ;) {please don't flame me
for that one} I've seen them more often then I've seen my parents.
Secondly, because I consider myself an admirer of their musical talent. I don't
have to stalk them to appriciate talent.
Yes, this also probably the longest post you'll ever see from me. I have a
    life :P

No time is set for the TGIF's pre Birch Hill meet. So far we have over 20 of us
coming. If you are planning on being there and haven't E Mailed me...Do so
ASAP...I need an acurate count. The show has been changed from All Ages to 18
and Up. I'll be mailing everyone a mini map sometime during the week of the
show. Looking forward to seeing everyone :)

Sorry I'm not going to use quotes, but there is a lot of stuff I want to
    say.

First, I just picked up the Lie single this weekend at a Rock Convention
in Philly for $11. No bad, on it is an editted version of Lie, Space-
Die Vest (full version), To Live Forever (unreleased, but on the Live in
Tokyo video) and a live version of Another Day.

Next I'd like to say thet the I Mother Earth CD 'Dig' kicks ass, I
haven't gotten the second (Scenery and Fish?), Columbia House hasn't
sent it to me yet. But I did see them (IME) when they played with DT in
Pittsburgh, but all I remember is bongos and steel drums...I was so
pumped up for DT, that the rest was a blur.

Long Songs: Are awesome if written correctly. If you look at the long
pieces Yes, Rush, DT and old Genesis (when they were good) did; its
awesome becuase for the most part they are well thought out and written
extrondarily. But if a long song is just reputious junk, then forget
    it.

A DT double CD. I would hope they combine it one case. First to save
packing in multiple CD's. Also combination will be cheaper. Heck when
I got both Joe Satriani, Peter Gabriel's and Yes's double Cd's I got
them for $20. Which is a lot better then $15 2X.

For all you Shadow Gallery and Magellan fans. Magna Carta is
re-releasing both of their first CD's in limited quanities either this
week or next. So get your local CD store to order you a copy today.

Rush vs DT....you can't compare to incredible groups. The only things
that DT has though is the talent (Peart and Mike are damn close though!)
Saw them in Philly a month back! Awesom show especially Natural Science
    and 2112.

For you Birch Hiller's. When do you plan to eat/meet at TGIF, I have a
2 1/2 hour drive and am deciding if I want to go really earlier or not.
Please let me know! I need to know, you know!

    Later,

    Bruce D.

    Hey All!!!

I got a problem that I hope a few of you maybe able to help me out. I
asked my girlfriend to go see Dream Theater with me at Birch Hill in a 2
weeks. She said yes (after some convincing) but now she is trying to
back out of going. She says she isn't into Dream Theater at all...or any
type of that music. SHe is into club music and all. SHe hasn't really
listened to DT that much. SO my question is...how do I get her to really
want to go and have a good time while she is there??? I would appricate
the ladies here to help me out as well. Thaks a million!!!! Later!!

Here's one: perfect@96rock.com the deejay Beth has been answering my
requests from this address. She even played one of my perfect album side.
The funny thing is, that I had requested Pull Me Under, but her manager made
her ask me to resubmit a different song (along with two other songs deemed
unappropriate by the powers that be--Pantera, and COC...but for some reason
Megadeth was acceptable?? hmmmmmmm) list. Anyways, I'm just nicely
surprised to see that DT IS getting airplay from them. As I recall, Beth
ASKED me specifically to request DT, but they shot it down. Apparently
someone around there likes them that has some control over all that. I say

[ A Jammer mentioned Bafu's command of the English language and hoped
that he'd continue writing since the world needs his wit ]

I agree. At Y'con II I ended up hanging out with Bafu quite a bit,
since he rode up with us from Maryland, and one thing that struck me
immediately was Steve's fine, incisive mind. Those of us who knew him
from IRC knew full well how quickly Bafu could respond to something
with an off-the-wall but nevertheless funny riposte -- in person, his
    mind works the same way.

Concerning Bafu's feelings about the con, I can certainly understand.
It was with mingled trepidation and anticipation that Trey Allen,
Brandon Ghioto and I approached that Maryland house to collect Bafu on
the way up the coast. We'd speculated on what Bafu would look like,
what he would act like.......and we were totally surprised by the Real
Bafu. And yet, even though he didn't look like what we expected, we
found that he was as interesting in person as he was online, just in a
    different way.

It's a shame to see that, in a sense, the innocence here HAS faded.
I'll always have my pleasant memories of YtseCon II and Bafu is a big
    part of them.

Now that I've written a whole post about Bafu in the third-person, as
    if he wasn't here........uh, hi, Bafu! :)

    Opps, make that Becker. I can't type. I just can't. :)

Rest in Peace, Jason... a talent claimed by a spectre just beyond grasp, just out of understanding, and just enough to withstand his courageous counter-struggle until the very end. May his accomplishments not fade into the footnotes of music history.

In other news, I put an update of 11/30/96 up to Jeff and Ryan, but naturally I fucked it up COMPLETELY, leaving out about 20 orders that I just realized I Didn't tabulate, and screwing up quantities on seven or eight more. I'll have a corrected update out shortly.

A lot of you who had late/re-send orders are now receiving them, I'm getting word back from most of you, those who have not yet been accounted for, let me know, because there's more yet to do before I finally finish tying up all the "loose ends".

    Take care all!

I think progressive rock, was originally the style of music that was crated in the late 60's/early 70's by bands like Yes, Jethro Tull, Camel etc. it was a _progression_ (err... my english is not that good really, hope you understand) of rock, mixing in different stuff never heard in rock before (ie: symphonic stuff, reggae etc.) and since then has pretty much been defined as progressive roch though it pretty much has stayed the same since.... Symphonic rock is mainly the same, only with a new label, to keep the more melodic progressive bands separated from the more psychadelic/weird progressive bands.... Well, my theory anyhow....

I just spoke with someone close to the band. They have asked me to pass on a request.

    ----------

PLEASE do not record any of the upcoming shows. The band will be showcasing new material, none of which has been released. It would be very, very messy if any of the new material were recorded and passed around, or if any of it were to end up on a mass-produced compact disc.

There is a line in the tour rider (Ex: once upon a time, Van Halen had a line in their tour rider that a large bowl of M&Ms be kept in the dressing room with all green M&Ms removed) regarding a crackdown on taping equipment. The door-guards have been instructed to form everyone into a single admission line and pad everyone down heavily and search all handbags. Anyone discovered with recording equipment of any sort, before or during the show, will have these items confiscated.

    Hi

Last week (I think) I said that after 4 albums I still hadn't gotten into Yes. Some of you may remember that...

Well, on the weekend I had a listen to Drama and suddenly thought that it was a brilliant album... strange, that...

I shall listen to my other 3 Yes albums, but seeing as I've decided not to buy any more cds for a while (buying a new computer and either a guitar or a bass soon, and a credit card to pay off) I'll stick with those...

Bought my first King Crimson cd last Friday - brilliant! I got 'In the Court of the Crimson King', and it's pretty dang good. Moonchild is a bit of a snooze tho... much preferred the Iron Maiden version (just kidding).

Bad news about Jason Becker... had never heard of him before I read about it here, but it's still sad... What's ALS? Something to do with the muscles or something?

I'm getting ready for December 21, I'm going to do something I've never done before, now that I have every one of their albums (apart from Chronicles): I'm gonna listen to all the Rush albums in chronological order, one after the other, all day! I'm sure everyone else has already done this before, but this is my first year as a Rush fan (also my first year as a DT fan)...

Good to see I got the Most Frequent Poster for November in Australia :) I'm very proud... btw, what's EDO mean on the list? Itchy? I'm sure you'd know... (I'd *hope* you'd know :) )

    See yis!

    This is for Chris Ptacek,

Thanks for the great letter in the jam about Jason Becker, one of the most innovating and best guitarplayers around, I surely also hope it is not true that he passed away, he is just a damn good person, and the world loses a great person in him i it's true. I also like the style from Jason a lot, the way I use the whammy is a bit similar to his style, I listened his solo's over and over, it sounds like Allan Holdsworth, he also uses that kind of whammy technique. Jason did it with a more feely side, it brought tears in my eyes when I first heard "Air", a song which I definately had to learn, I did, but still after 6 years of practising it doesn't sound even close to the way he played it. This really means expression, this mens playing with your soul. Jason was one of the best at that style, I thought he was much better than Macalpine or Moore. Also the first notes in the song "Jewel" really brought tears to my eyes, what a style and what a tone. I really hate it that all people who are really good persons and good musicians allways get something they don't deserve, like Chris Oliva, maybe the most underrated guitarist of the decade. I surely hope Jason is still with us, if he is not then I hope he will find a lot of piece where he belongs, I guess I speak for all people who like him not only as a guitarist but also as a person. Jason, piece be with you in your heart.

    Okay, that's it for now.

Take Care everybody and we hope to meet some of you soon !

-------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi jammers everywhere, this is Dieter Cailliau (effX) from Belgium. Hi to the ytsejamming night-worker (i've forgotten your name). I wanted your (every-ones) opinion about how important lyrics are in progressive rock music. I admit that good lyrics give the music an extra value (especially when it is written in the language you normally speak), but since i usually don't speak Englisch, i don't really care about the lyrics. For me, the music is much more important. In fact, the problem is that i am writing music with a friend of mine, but we find it hard to write a good text in Englisch. How many of you read the lyrics of the music you like? And does it have a great influence on your opinion about the music?

I've been reading a lot about John Petrucci (among others) using 7-strings. Being no real guitar player myself, I wonder in which songs he is using it. Can anyone give me some examples? Thanx.
