first, where can i get an ytsejam shirt? i live in belgium...
second, personally, i think inagaddadavida is a great song, if you think that
    the drum
solo is kind of boring is because the drummer didn't have the chance to go to
    berklee!!!
    god bless dt...

    Everyone:

Does anyone know about the status of the new Fates Warning CD? Will it
be out soon? I'm getting into Fates Warning more now that I heard one of
their GOOD CDs (Perfect Symmetry - very awesome). I got the Chasing Time
CD first, which wasn't a fair shake of the current band. I think the new
vocalist and and drummer support the band much better than the old
artists. Therefore, I'm going to eventually try all their albums from No
    Exit onwards.

    DT stuff:

Can anyone tell me what's on the Lie single? I remember hearing about
something like To live forever on it. I'd LOVE the studio version of
that song, for I cannot understand the lyrics on my Live in Tokyo video.
Does James sing that in Japanese? (kidding!)

Anyway, I'd appreciate it if anyone who wants to respond to e-mail me
personally, for regretfully I just can't keep up with all the posts....

    Thanks bunches,
    Jon Case

I don't know. I think that in many cases these are at least partially
DT converts. My fiancee loved DT pretty much as soon as she heard them,
so she wants to go with me to see them. However, believe me, she
doesn't put up with the groups I like that she doesn't. So though
some people go to concerts, clinics etc. as a "date," and aren't
die-hard fans, I'd say most of the people there at least appreciate
them a little. Give them credit for what interest they may have.

About eight years ago, I was exposed to the band Cacophony for the
first time. I, for one reason or another, wanted to believe that it was
Marty Friedman playing all the solos and doing all of the crazy guitar work.
This is before Friedman was with Megadeth, and while he was still a
relatively small name in te field of guitar playing.... the Cacophony albums
were shrugged off by the critics, because often times you can't sit down and
digest everything before you write your reviews. There were things on this
album (Cacophony's 1988 release, "Go Off") that had never been done
before... harmonic ideas that had not been touched... this was such an
experience to me. I have never gotten over it.
About two years later I was exposed for the first time, to Jason
Becker's "Perpetual Burn". This had a similar effect, but it was so much
more pure. Beyond just losing the vocalist and second rate lyrics, there
was a passion here that I have only heard in a few other recordings...
Tori's "Under the Pink", and Vai's "Passion and Warfare", and the song To
Live Forever, by Dream Theater to name a couple. The album opens on this
synth string pad, and as soon as the guitar comes in with those singing
tones, I immediately get goosebumps. The tone is like a guitar... the
techniques are that of a guitarist... but this is more communicative than
any voice... more alive than any picture, any movie.... this is truly one of
the rare occurences in which I have been blessed with a glimpse into a pure
    human being's soul.
I've asked myself many times why you can't hear the same emotion in
other neo classical artists music... I love Vinnie (Vinman!) Moore's work,
as well as MacAlpine's... but it's not as pure. There's an innocent quality
in Jason's sound that doesn't come from his guitar or his amps... it's his
hands, and his heart. To this day I don't know what brings that fire out in
their playing for certain, but after learning some of each artist's music I
can say that I don't pull that spark... I think it's a quality only
attainable when you play your music as your voice, not trying to impress
anyone with your speed, nor trying to play off of someone else's
composition. Jason was original. There are things on this album that I
still to this day overlook... new ideas that pop out at me as though I've
    never heard them before.
After Cacophony broke up I was delighted to see that Jason had found
a home in David Lee Roth's band (This is immediately after Vai. This is
about as hot a gig as a rock guitarist could ask for. DLR was still full
on) and that Marty Friedman had joined Megadeth. I did NOT know, even after
the magazines came out, what was wrong with Jason. His playing on the album
"A Lil' Ain't Enough" is absurdly good. He hits styles that I KNOW he'd
never focused on before, and takes them to the extreme! Later I find out
that during some of the recordings his hands were numb and unresponsive....
that he couldn't even play like himself. Can you imagine getting your dream
gig, and being physically incapable of playing like yourself? What a cruel
    trick.
I spent years in hope and admiration for Jason... I didn't
understand his kind of dedication, and passion for life. I also didn't
understand his pain. He mentioned in his "Open Letter" (originally in
Guitar magazine, also visible at http://www.guitarists.com in hypertext)
about being too embarrassed to talk to some of his friends on the phone,
because he couldn't formulate words clearly.... his speech was slurred. His
body was deteriorating around him, and even with the hope of a cure, it is
likely that the nerve damage would be irreversable. I think about this,
often using it as a mental kick in the ass when I start to feel sorry for
myself. "Oh, this eight finger tapping lick is just too hard. I'll never
get it down." *Smack* What a wake up call.
Growing up listening to his music, I had one goal: Be able to play
like Jason by the time you're seventeen. This was not only a shallow goal,
but likely an impossible one. No one I've heard has EVER played like
Becker. Not even Friedman, who doubles solos on both Cacophony albums plays
like him. His fingers move differently on te fretboard... his whammy
technique is different... to quote the Highlander, "There can be only one."
When I turned 17 I realized the foolishness of that goal. I had learned a
huge amount of technique from this pursuit, but I lacked any musical
direction or voice. I'm still recovering from that now, 2 years later.
Perpetual Burn has a mysterious effect on me, as it's had on most
people who give it an honest listen. You can be in the worst mood in the
world, and the music will suddenly take you away. If you focus on the
music, it can instantly calm you... if you are in a quiet place and can
close your eyes, you just FEEL the music. It has so much meaning, and this
meaning is different to everyone that experiences it. It's musical truth.
It is musical beauty. It is profound and lasting.
Jason has always been my invisible mentor. He's always been a role
model. He was honest, drug free, and dedicated. I don't want to believe
that he's gone. In fact, until I get a verification from a source that I
know must be infallible, I still hold out the hope that he lives. Still,
here in Chicago at the Jason Becker ALS benefit, seeing the live footage of
Jason in the condition he's in.... might he not deserve peace? I literally
had to choke back tears at that concert when they pulled the screen down to
show him. But I had a feeling something was wrong when Jason decided that
he wanted the money that was raised to to go the ALS Foundation instead of
to support his medical costs. That's a dark foreshadowing.
Jason, where ever you are, Earth or Heaven, we love you and will
always strive to hold to your standard. With what little music you were
allowed to make, you've enriched our lives beyond anything we can hope to
    comprehend. Thank you.

Absolutely, they do make up one song, and it's my favorite song ever (well,
so far - until next summer????)

In response to what Richard Harris wrote "fargo@brown.edu" I am not
blind at all to progressive music in fact when I had my own band we were
semi-progressive. I know it takes a great deal of talent to do what Dream
Theater does. However, I don't like long songs, even the stuff that Dream
Theater does. My relief from this is that only once in a while Dream
Theater will produce such a long song. So I can easily survive and thrive
off of the shorter ones. So Richard, relax. I know progressive. But, you
however judged what I said in the wrong way. J

Personal editorial (IMHO): On the demise of Extreme, Nuno, (E)VH & Gary. I
just finished listening to Extreme's *Porno..*. I don't think EVH can come
close to Nuno's total repertoire as musician, composer, producer, arranger,
etc. Beside guitar, Nuno is an all-around musician; I've never known EVH to
match all Nuno's skills. Nor do I think that VH can match the close
harmonies of Extreme. VH does do some harmonies, but never the complexity
of Extreme. I was listening to 'Flight of the Wounded BumbleBee' and a
co-worker thought it was a playing at the wrong speed (too fast), and was
astounded when I told him it was playing at the correct speed (not that you
play a CD at the wrong speed easily); Nuno is just that damn fast. Nor have
I heard VH play well at the other end, i.e., 'More than Words', the melody,
musicianship or content. If Gary is/will be the new front man for VH, lets
pray that it makes VH better, not put Gary's new writing to shame.

I'm sure that at least a few people will simply attribute this to my
inability to understand any really deep, thought-provoking music, but I'll ask
anyways. Does anyone else besides me completely fail to hear the common thread
that runs through Erotomania, Voices, and TSM? Obviously Erotomania has pieces
of the other two, but I have never been able to really think of these as one
cohesive piece. To me, The Mirror and Lie are a much more effective suite, or
whatever you want to call it.
While I'm trying to dig up some threads that I know have been done
before, and on a similiar topic, I also tend to think that the studio version
of ACoS is much less cohesive, and sounds more thrown together, for lack of a
better phrase, than the original one on Dance of Eternity/Subconcious. I'vee
always thought that this might be because the band made changes to a piece
written during the IaW period after going through some obvious changes during
and after the recording of Awake. I realize that this has been done before, but
if anyone wants to e-mail me privately with dissenting opinions I would find t
this an interesting discussion. Jam on...

Since yesterday was the second year anniversery of me seeing
DT for the first and only time, I decided to post

-I saw RUSH at the LA Forum last week. All I have to say
is fuck $45 floor seats where you can't see anything. I thought
I was close but I ended up being far away and couldn't see shit!
It was a good show though, great version of 'Subdivisions' and
             a neat drum solo.

-I got the Jim Matheos solo album (Fate's new album will basically
another solo album), but anyways, I expected to hear piano
and keyboards and stuff but it was all guitar, chello, and
violin. It still isn't bad though!

-Is it me, or has Jon Oliva packed on a few pounds?

-Have you seen that eMpTyV played 'Edge of Thorns' during
a couple of 'Real World' episodes. Also they played 'Painkiller'
             yesterday during some exercise show!

Okay, here's my own "personal" interpretation. Maybe you'll agree,
    maybe not.
Erotomania is a great instrumental with tons of riffs and runs from the
other songs in AWAKE, Especially from others in AMBI. As far as meaning,
this is what it means to me:
In Erotomania, a man goes through a ton of meaningless sex (Derived from the
title), which while pleasing to the body is corrosive to the mind and soul.
In Voices, he has all these voices running through his mind, Christian
voices: "Preach the Word when you're supposed to" (Notice Word is
capitalized), evil voices: "Don't expect your own Messiah...". He appears
to be a Christian dealing with his faith, wondering if he's lost it, and in
the end, The Silent Man, he finds God: "When there is balance, arrive the
    Silent Man."

Please realize I'm a Catholic and this is only my personal
interpretation. Anyone agree? This is a pretty cool thing for me and I'd
like to know anyone else's viewpoint on this GREAT SONG.

Peace be with you and God bless.

What I think would be cool:

You know how Genesis did that "The Longs" and "The Shorts" two cd
set? I think DT should try it. On one, have all the 5:00 songs, both heavy
and ballady, with all the commercial tracks. The other is all the epics and
more proggy songs (Met II, Raise the Knife, etc.) The hard-core DT fans
would buy both, the people who dig the song on the radio will by the
"shorts" one. Then they'll be so amazed by their prowess that they will buy
    the other one as well.

Another advantage of the 2CD is they will get MUCH more media
attention. I know the newspaper here (The Oregonian) will probably not
review the new DT cd, but if they show the confidence to put out a double,
it might interest them. Hell, even MTV might be intrigued by the bold
decision. I know I'd be happy!

    >>Being from Sweden you may have heard of Veni Domine??
    >
    >YES!!!! Those guys are really good. For some great melodic sort of
    >metal with vocal work ala Geoff Tate (yet different), only much
    >darker than Queensryche, these guys are the stuff. What are they up
    >to now? I know they toured with Saviour Machine in Europe a little
    >while back (now there's a band I wish would tour in America again,
    >and they're from California, too), but that's the last I heard from
    >them. Anyway, I don't know that I'd call Veni Domine orchestral, but
    >symphonic? maybe.

After "Fall Babylon Fall" there was "Material Sanctuary", did you get that
one? It's a bit slower and heavier, but still VD through and through, I
like it better that FBF. Right now, actually this very month I believe they
are in the studio recording their third disc. I think it should be out
early 97. You should check out their web page.

    it's pretty cool.

I think they are planning on touring the US this time, they only toured
Europe with the last disc. Material Sanctuary wasn't even released in the
US as far as I know. I had to get a Swedish import, $30 but well worth it.

Hi.. i still cannot believe this is true.. today i tried and watched
Mtv for the news..in case they dignified themselves and at least say
that Jason had past away.. anyway..since i have never *listened* to
anything from Jason.. but i still hurt..i am still sad.. because i had
visited his site about a year or something ago and i was very moved with
his open letter..and wanted to get his album..when reading his open
letter i felt very close to him..even thou i dont have Als or anything
remotely like that.. but the way he wrote it made me feel very close to
him.. and not stepping into religious themes..but i believe Jason was a
kind soul..and a person who suffered a great deal..and that God has
    Jason on His memory...

Hey people! I just wanted some help to get the Angra cd Holy Land. Over here (Puerto Rico) they sell the Japanese import only, which costs about $40. If there is anybody out there who could get it for cheaper and would be willing to buy it for me when I send them the money, please e-mail me privately (alexis1@prtc.net). Thank you very mucho.

Does anyone have directions to the New Haven gig? (from Queens, NYC)

Looks like I'll be going to either the New Haven and/or Birch Hill gigs. Anyone else in the area needing a ride is welcome to hitch along.

    Later,
