    Hey everyone,

In case no one knows yet, there is an Iron Maiden discussion
list, not a mailing list, a list just like this. I think the
only thing you gotta do it you want on is email this address

    "jmarcos@vector.com.mx"

and the guy should put ya on it. It really needs more people
on it and I KNOW there are maiden fans here. So come on you
    Irons!

I guess I'm obliged to take the bait on this one :).

Dig, is one of my top-ten albums of all time. If I remember correctly, IME
derived from poetry readings, so there is quite a bit of depth to the
lyrics. The album as a whole is very sensual, and very metallish.

Scenery and Fish, on the other hand is not near so heavy. Upon being asked
why this is so, IME responded with, "Of course the music had to change, we
cut our hair" (I will not under any circumstances vouch for the validity of
that quota ). This album is much more ??mature??. This first time I heard
this album I thought that it was inferior to Dig. Now that I have listened
to it a few times (like 50-100) I really am beginning to like it.

Tough question with an easy answer: BOTH OF THEM, thank you. I have
Rush's 20 albums on CD, and DT's 5 albums on CD. And I plan to buy all
of their albums - I'm not going to let one go for the other.

A few years ago I bought an album called "Perpetual Burn" by Jason Becker (recorded when he was 17!) and I have never viewed guitar playing in the same light again. That album is like a "milestone" in my collection (in the sense that "How could I ever live without it now that I've heard it?!") I also heard from a very reliable source that he died just before his benefit concert in Chicago (which was amazing!). Its nice to know he was watching :-) (Anyone remember when Greg Howe kinda let it slip?) Now I realize what he meant.

I hope he's jammin' with Criss Oliva right now :-)

The world has lost an amazingly talented musician in Jason and this place is a little less colorful without him.

I would tend to agree that long songs can get dull pretty quick. But I've never ran into a DT dong that I didn't like even if it is 20 minutes. DT changes things so often that it's almost like several songs within a song, but they keep coming back to the same theme. I think ACoS is one of the best songs I've ever heard, I almost wish there was more to it. No one believes that Chopin or Bach, Teleman, or Mozart should have constrained themselves to three minute opuses; so why should DT being equally talented musicians do the same? If Mozart found 20 minutes the length he needed to tell his story in music, DT should be able to do the same, and I believe they do a wonderful job at it. True music isn't for selling, it is for playing; we just happen to enjoy listening.

    Hi guys :-)

Are you as excited as *I* am ??? ...well ok, probably not :-/

Anyway, I just put the results of my Marillion poll (50 entries) and Dream Theater poll (43 entries) on my homepage, for anyone who's interested... There may be a few surprises there :->

There's also a new "Most Frequent Poster List" and "Domain List" for last months digests of Freaks (Marillion list), Ytsejam and Voices (Dream Theater). Lots of links to homepages and other cool sites on it too, this month... Check it out ! You can also find out how many people in *your* internet-domain posted to any of these three mailinglists by checking the "Domain List"...

You can also enter your birthday for the Freaks and/or Ytsejam birthday Calendars :-) ...and of course sign my guestbook while you're at it ;-) If you already entered your birthday, check to see if it's there correctly... Some people might have accidentally entered the date in the European format. I know *some* did, 'cause there are only 12 months in *my* year... :->

By the time you're reading this, there should also be a page with 29 Marillion pictures on my homepage... Some are pretty cool :->

The Marillion, Dream Theater and Tori Amos icons are also still there for you to download :>

You can pick either one of the following URLs :

That's been the alternative I've proposed to quite a few people. I think the record company would be a little "cooler" with that. Another possibility is to do what Metallica is supposedly doing - release one album now, and another one in 6 months/a year/whatever.

I did hear someone quote Mike Portnoy as saying he wants it released as a 2CD because (and I'm paraphrasing here) there's no other way for the material to be properly "balanced" - there'll be too many heavy songs, or too many ballads, or too many long, proggy tunes, etc.

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass if they release it as 27 CD singles, as long as I get to hear all the material. :)

Hmm....long songs DO tend to bore me, but at the same time, I'm VERY impressed when I find a long song that DOESN'T bore me...for example ACOS, or 2112 from Rush.

I think the reason most long songs bore me is because they tend to consist of the same riffs repeated OVER and OVER and OVER again until I feel like hurling. (Example: "Bleeding Me" by Metallica. Yeah, it's over 8 minutes long, but it's just rehashing one riff the whole time. You could do the same song in 4 minutes). The difference with the aforementioned ACOS and 2112 is that the whole is broken into distinct pieces (movements?) while still maintaining the sense of "wholeness". I can't describe it much better than that, maybe someone else who agrees with me can explain it to me. :)

A couple of months ago, there was some talk of Yanni on the Jam, which was first brought up by Chuck "IbanezRG570", and later supported by me. I was pleased to see the positive response from fellow Jammers who looked into Yanni and were pleased with his music.

In the last issue, Chuck "KorgX3" (the Jammer formerly known as "the other Ibanez") mentioned a New Age artist known as David Arkenstone. Unfortunately, I cannot be so enthusiastic in supporting this artist as I am about Yanni. I first heard his work on a compilation CD called "A Narada Collection: Hidden Beauty, The Evolution of Sound". The track included on this compilation is quite an ear-catcher. So I headed out to the local discount record store and picked up the CD from which this track was taken: David Arkenstone's "Quest of the Dream Warrior". (The track, by the way, is entitled "The Magic Forest"). I brought the disc home and was instantly disappointed. It seemed to me as though the track chosen for the compilation was the only one worth listening to. Due to my inability to write good descriptions of music, unlike adept fellows like Chris Ptacek and Mike Bahr (for example) who clearly convey their thoughts into words, all I can say is to be careful when looking into this artist David Arkenstone. In other words.....

    Listen before you buy.

He's a very popular New Age artist, and I am not trying to derogate Chuck's taste in music, but because I had such a negative experience with this music, I feel obligated to present this caveat. If you find you do indeed enjoy his music, more power to ya!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

I recently got my hands on the album _Compendium_ by Mr. So&So. There's a track on there called "Sixes and Seven". If there are any Robert Plant fans on here, you might recall that he has a tune by that same title on Shaken N Stirred. I'm wondering if this phrase "sixes and sevens" means something, or if it's a UK thing, or what. Any ideas? Anyone?

To the person who mentioned Dave Arkenstone: I was listening to his latest CD _Quest for the Dream Warrior_ and I really liked it. I skimmed through it at a used CD shop, so I wasn't sure to buy this or not. It sounded like lively orchestrated music with a some sort of percussion to it like a drum machine. Might pick this up if I see it again.

I was browsing again and I checked out a Tangerine Dream disc that was in the new age section. This band puts out great electronic music. I own _Lily on the Beach_ and the _Dream Mixes_. What makes TD so great is the variety of keyboard sounds that the guys come up with. The only way I can describe them to you if you are familiar with PC mods and sound files that was popular in the demo scene. If you like that kind of electronic music and like it fairly complex, then give Tangerine Dream a listen. The _Dream Mixes_ CD is remixes of some of their previous albums and it sounds like new age music with a techno beat. It reminds me of a the music that the PC demo group Renaissance did with their demo _Amnesia_. Also if you liked the music that Future Crew did, then you'll like TD.

    Walter.

I dont think that you could really consider "inagoddawhothefuckever" in the same class as a change of seasons, (not to say that one is better than the other, just different). Where "Inna..." is basically one riff with the longest boring drum solo I've ever heard, <underline>A Change of Seasons</underline> incorporates many different moods and levels to produce a pretty cool piece of music (Unless your not really into progressive, but then, I guess, you're sort of on the wrong mailing list).

My suggestion is that you lock yourself in a room for an entire day, with only a sock, a radio, and A Change of Seasons. The the guiding light of progressive spirituality will finally steal your soul.
