Petrucci mentioned that what is heard during the intro and outro of ACOS
is a tuned-down acoustic. He loved the tone of the instrument, so he
decided to use it instead of a seven-string electric.

As opposed to the JP who's famous for splattering my eardrums with tormented sound waves and atrophied molecules of air...

Pollack was famous because the people who saw his work had never seen it done before.

Ever wonder what it would look like if the guys who did Vai's P&W seven-string graphic design did that sort of stuff?

So is Mr. Pollack's technique what "In Living Colour" based its introduction on? (and I don't mean the lyrics by Heavy D)

    > I'm not going to share my opinion on Jackson Pollack. Mostly because I > really don't have one.

Yeah yeah yeah. "If I give one to you I have to give one to everybody!" Selfish bastard.

    > But I'll say this much. It must be a hell of a lot of fun to take a > bucket of paint and hurl it at a canvas and let it splatter everywhere.

Man, why limit yourself to still objects? Take a weekend off and try this out your car window. Velocity art. Splatter the car next to you, or if you can skirt the median closely enough, toss the stuff in a gentle arc and nail the people on the other side. What a blast. You have to be quick with the camera to catch the action before people start running themselves off the road in shame and confusion at their new amazing technicolor dream cars. Plus you never know how quick the other guy's gonna be with his wipers if you coat his windshield.

    Fly, shutterbug, fly.

(try to keep your speed under 50mph so the paint doesn't dissipate in mid-air, any faster and you have to use the really thick oil-based stuff)

    > And having fun is an honest pursuit, don't you think?

    "The bitch set me up."

    > And honesty is good in art and music, isn't it?

"I hate myself and want to die."

    Hey, Kids.

Just wanted to pass along a note to you: THIS SATURDAY Finneus Gauge will be playing the Middle East here in Philadelphia.

what is finneus gauge, you ask?

    "hey syrinx. what's finneus gauge?"

    i'm glad you asked!@

finneus gauge is a band led by ex-echolyn keyboardist Chris Buzby. You know, Echolyn. I'm sure SOME of you have heard of them. :)

Anyway, they're playing this saturday night in phiadlphia. i'll be there, so if anyone wants to meet up (or go and see a great band) lemme know via private e-mail.

just an as aside, i've had a chance to hear some demos of the band and all i can say is this: you can tell chris was the main source of echolyn's music. i highly reccommend that you kids attend if you're anywhere near the area.

if you have any questions you can either e-mail me or e-mail Chad (finneus gauge's pubic relations guy) at qhost@ptdprolog.net

    Catch ya Saturday!@

I say it depends on the song. Inagaddadavidda is really boring, IMO. ACOS, however, I think rocks for all 23 some odd minutes of it. If the band is good enough at writing to keep the song interesting for the whole time, then I can deal with long songs. Rush was really good at it too, i.e. 2112, Cygnus x-1, etc. The only problem is, when you're a busy person, like I tend to be, it's difficult sometimes to listen to the whole song all at once. :)

Yup. It rocks. Even though it's the "single", Stinkfist has to be my favorite track. Plus the packaging (though that has nothing or at least little to do with the music) is totally killer.

What do you think of that one track...don't remember the name or the number...but the one where that seemingly Mexican (?) guy goes on and on about how much Americans suck and are stupid? Very interesting...

Ok, well.. I can WAIT FOR SLEEP..

Here's a quick rundown of how the show went tonight..

The band went on stage late after a horrible 2 hour and 20 min sound check. Got to hang out with Portnoy before the show and chat with him for a little while (more details to come if ya really want em) The boys took the stage at 9:37 and here's the setlist along with some observations and notes.. Opened at 9:37 with ACoS (part 1 of 3) Mirror Lie Burning My Soul <--New tune, very heavy, very complex, very cool. LaBrie actually says the word "shit in the lyrics TKH<----long instrumental beginning with "Carol of the Bells" in the middle Just Let Me Breathe<-- another very cool new song CIaW<----- Very confusing at first. They changed the tempo and feel all therought the song and during the long intricate part of the song when they normally all go crazy and do that run, they took turns playing it. Hard to really describe, but very cool to hear Peruvian Skies<--- Different than anything else they've written. Seems bluesy and jazz influenced. Along with some amazing time sig changes PMU Lines In The Sand<--- just too cool, can't put it into word (or images for that matter) Take My Pain Away<--- Talk about breath taking, very moving lyrics. Petrucci wrote it for his father when he passed away this past summer. Absolutly gorgeous. Petrucci plays a custom made Ibanez double next guitar.. very cool looking. ACoS<--- Picked up at Crimson Sunrise Ytse-Jam<--- Went directly into this.. kind of medley style. LTL<---- Had an awesome jam session in the middle, remeniscent of LSoAD jam off of Mind Control ACoS<--- Can't remember what the name of the part is that they picked up on.. it was when LaBrie says.. "good-bye"

Off stage at 11:40 Encore 11:42 Metropolis Part I <---was really hoping for part 2.. oh well, will have to wait a little longer, no biggie Off stage 11:52

A couple of other quick notes, had an awesome seat on the Balcony sitting next to Rob Shore (nice guy) They through in a little bit piece of "Cupids Dead" by Extreme during the middle of Metropolis. Myung has found himself a new toy, it's called a wah pedal and seems to love it. He was using a PURPLE Tung 6-String FRETLESS for part of the show. Actually sounded awesome. Oh well.... till next time.

    -ArchAngel fish69@Juno.com

BTW: DreamNDay... I showed up to your house, sorry I couldn't get ahold of ya sooner.. I did try. No big deal. I apologize for you having to take the bus. Sorry man. I'll e-mail ya later

Oh my God. I thought the Rush shows were good. Tonight's DT concert at the Chance in Poughkeepsie was fucking INCREDIBLE. Where to begin...

OK, well, first of all, Richie and I spent 13 hours of our lives, between the time we left Burlington, VT, and the time we got back. We finally got in around 5:10 am. (I'm gonna be one hurtin' puppy at work tomorrow.) And what an interesting trip it was. :) In one evening, Richie managed to join the ranks of drivers who have caused street pizza and who have gotten speeding tickets. :) But that's all another story.

First of all, everyone seems to have new toys to play with. John M. is using Yamaha 6-string fretless basses. (What happened to the Tung?) Mike has his new purple and white Tama kit. Oh, damn, it sounds good. John P. had a black-on-white Picasso pattern 7-string, along with the usual 6er. He *also* broke out a new - get this, I'm still dying over this - double-necked Ibanez. It seemed to me (and I could be wrong - I was on JM and Derek's side of the stage) to be a top neck of 7 strings and a bottom neck of 6. Either way, the top is electric, and the bottom had no visible pickups, but I'm assuming it has one of those bridge acoustic pickups, because the bottom sounded acoustic, but the bottom half wasn't hollow or anything. (And Derek might have had new stuff, but I'm no good at being able to tell these things.)

The wardrobe. John P was wearing a green Adidas soccer jersey looking thing. Weird. JP, Mike, and Derek were all sporting various goatees. Derek and James decided to break out the leather pants. Yuck. :)

The music. Holy shit. OK, first of all, they opened with the first two parts of ACoS, and segued into Mirror/Lie. The whole night, they were playing with arrangements, and making songs flow into one another. It was cool as shit. New material: Peruvian Skies. JP and Mike sing harmonies!!! Yes!!! Finally, I can consider DT perfect. :) Amazing tune, but it'll take another listen before I can tell you what it's like. Take Away My Pain. The most beautiful song I've ever heard. Just Let Me Breathe. Again, I have to get familiar with it, but fast paced, heavy, and ass-kickin'. The other two new ones were Lines in the Sand and Burning my Soul(?). Some *very* cool time changes n stuff in there. Ass kickin'. Old stuff: man, they fucked around with arrangements big time, and it all sounds amazing. CIAW most notably. It's now a half-time groove-oriented thingie. THEY FUCKING PLAYED ANOTHER HAND/THE KILLING HAND!!!! AND YTSEJAM!!! And a little teaser of A Fortune in Lies at the end. Oh, yeah, somewhere in the middle of the set they played "Carpe Diem" from ACoS, and ended the show (well, before the encore, anyway) with the last two sections of ACoS. God was it good. Again, I'll have more to say about everything (hopefully) after Friday's show at Toad's.

After the show: Talked to Derek for a couple of minutes. Pat Griffin - Derek really likes the YConIII shirts. :) No title, no producer. That was about it. Met DreamNDay. I could see his hands twitching, ready to post to the Jam at a moment's notice. :) Saw Brian Levy again. Cool. Met Stephane - talk about dedication! He flew in from fucking FRANCE for this. Also met Adam B. (I won't try to spell your last name :), aw shit, and someone else. Also met a guy named Bob who said he lurks. Hi Bob! Nice YConIII shirt! :) Lose the Red Sox hat. :) Saw Jaison John selling merchandise and paraphernalia. He hopes to see a lot of people at these shows. Don't disappoint him. :)

I'm sure I'll think of more to say later on. For now, I have to make a quiz, get an hour or two of sleep, and try to have a Thursday. Oh, btw, is anyone here *from* the Poughkeepsie area? The neighborhood around the Chance is a shithole! Thanks for letting us know! :)

Hope to see some of you at Toad's on Friday!

    ******* END OF SPOILERS *******

OK, now that I have your attention, here's a little note for all you Jammers that are going to these shows. Personally, part of the reason that I love all DT-type gatherings (Cons, concerts, clinics, etc) is because I get to meet Jammers! And I know I'm not alone. So, here's what you do. Everyone, now. After the show is over, go mingle in front of the stage. Introduce yourself to people. On Friday, I'll be wearing a green UVM baseball cap. Come say hi. :)

Line of the evening: Richie and I were on the way down, and had to take an hour-long detour because the main road south was blocked due to some sort of barn fire (it's still burning!).

Me: We're going to see Dream Theater! Richie: In theory.

    See ya Friday! -d

P.S. No beginning of month FAQ update. I have too much shit to do. But expect Version 4.5 to come out before Christmas. :) P.P.S. I NEED SETLISTS for each of these five shows. If you have an accurate setlist of any of the shows, mail it to me when you can. This is for the FAQ.
