Have you ever thought of human voice as an instrument? Previously to
getting my first listen to Dream Theater, I hadn't. Now I listen to
LaBrie singin' and oft wonder how it would sound without him. I
suspect it would lack something. The vocalist adds something very
important to the texture of music. We can't be too thankful for the
fact that the band has LaBrie who bears another musical instrument in
his wide vocal (aka tonal) range.
Lyrics unnecessary? I've gotta disagree. I've been very sensitive
about the lyrical content since I first got to music. I've been
writing some stuff myself and I wouldn't be doing it if I found it
pointless. Music and lyrics are equally important to me. Maybe that's
why I memorize all the lyrics very quickly and very seldom need a
second look at the lyric sheet again. Good lyrics make me think. Good
music does too. I'm more than satisfied when the two mix.
So now you've found somebody who gets a kick outta them lyrics. Let's
rumble!

Okay, let's get one thing established from the onset: it
is...5:49am on Thursday and I have arrived back home from the Pougkeepsie
show. Now, I'm not going to spoil anything for those who haven't seen the
shows yet. What I am going to do is layout the basic blueprint of my evening:
1) Pick up D-man to begin a 5 HOUR DRIVE to the show
2) Hit a possum with my car. No joke. Since I'm from Los Angeles,
I'm not exactly trained to avoid kamakazi marsupials while driving, so
what I mistook for a Hefty bag blowing across the road was actually....
It may sound funny to you all, but this is the first thing I've ever
killed that was bigger than my hand. Very tramatic. That alone is going
to send me into therapy
3) A huge fire on one of the four roads in Vermont, resulting in
an hour detour.
4) We arrive at the show minutes before the band takes the stage,
missing the opening act: Ruddess and Morgenstein.
5) The band takes the stage
6) The band leaves the stage
7) The band takes the stage again
8) The band leaves the stage again, this time for good
9) Talk to Derek after the show. Very cool guy, but we couldn't
get any new info out of him, other than the song "Lines In The Sand" is
the first song he "brought" (his word) to the band
10) D-man and I leave
11) D-man and I stop at Dunkin' Donuts
12) I spill my jelly doughnut all over my sweater and pants in
the car, resulting in a very sticky situation.
13) D-man laughs
14) We see someone getting pulled over by the cops
15) D-man and I laugh
16) D-man and I get pulled over by the cops! I was doing 80 in a
65 and my registration sticker on my plates had expired. This is my FIRST
speeding ticket. That may not seem like a big deal to all you dare-devils
out there, but this was a very tramatic moment. It's my first misdamenor.
I'm now a hardned criminal. I have very few ambitions in life, but one of
them was to die with a perfect driving record. Yet another dream goes
down in flames. At least I still have my health (cough, cough).
17) D-man laughs
In short, this was a very expensive evening. The price of the ticket,
plus a DT hat and long sleeve shirt, plus a speeding ticket puts this
night close to $200. It's a good thing I really like this band. And the
best thing about it is that we get to do it all over again at New Haven.
I must be sick in the head.

Hey! Now that the concerts have begun, I have a question to ask the folks that
went. How are the crowds? I'm going to the Providence show with a bunch of
people who have never seen DT before (myself included). I went to the Danbury
clinic, and the crowd (such as it was) there seemed really relaxed, and were
paying attention to the music. I've also been to a bunch of Rush shows, where
everyone just sat back and enjoyed the show. I realize in Providence we'll all
be standing up, but I just wanted to know ahead of time what to expect. I
myself wouldn't have much of a problem if it got rough, but some of the people
I'm going with might not appreciate a mosh pit as much as some of us. <grin>
Anyway, just curious!

I say this because I heard Jason Becker for the first time over the past hour. It all started when I walked into The Wherehouse (music store) earlier this evening and found a few items of interest in the used cd bins. Some people refer to the used bins as "Glam Graveyards." These uncouth mobs dub them CEMETARIES...but I, GOLDMINES!! Blackbeard himself could not have hidden a greater stash of loot than the contents of the shred-sparkling used bins. ;)
I also read an interview about a week ago that had bits about Becker writing new material and continuing his practicing. It said his condition had miraculously improved somewhat, which left me kind of stunned when news of his death suddenly appeared here. I don't remember which magazine it was, it was on a newsstand, the title is irrelevant because Becker's ALIVE.
After grabbing Mr. Big's "Bump Ahead" and White Lion's "Big Game" (Paul and Vito! Woohoo!) for $4.99 apiece, I continued looking around when BAM!! There was Satan himself, looking like he was about to vomit. David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough," folks. **$1.99.** What could I do but investigate this phenomenal guitarist everyone on this list has been so hyped about lately. All I can say after one listen to the album (which also features Gregg and Matt Bissonette on drums and bass) is that this guy has cheee-YOPS. "Mondo" might be the proper adjective to describe his flurries. Mondo chops, yes...
Oh yeah, I also stumbled upon T-Ride's self-titled album. Years ago I read an article on T-Ride that featured a brief commentary by a guy named Joe Satriani. Mr. Satriani mentioned that Jeff Tyson, the guitarist for T-Ride, was his "most prolific pupil." With that phrase burned into my mind, I've been on the lookout for this Tyson guy for quite some time. I figure, a recommendation from Satriani probably has SOME merit, right? Well Jeff Tyson is most definitely prolific, and a great rhythm guitarist, too, which is kind of like having snow-chains on a ferrari. He reminds me a little bit of George Lynch. Did I mention--> **$1.99.** (GOLDMINES!)
Anyway, methinks meneeds to find Becker's other works. Cacophony, etc... Any suggestions? Or does he only have one or two albums out to narrow down the choices?

Cow-diiin-nah WEAEAEAEB! Testament's album "Low" is a great example of this - great album, not much material pushing past five minutes. Same with KX's "Ear Candy."

The song that Def Lep and Steve Stevens covered is Action by the great seventies Englsih band The Sweet.
Joe Elliot is a huge Sweet fan and SS thought is WAS a Queen song *giggle*
And The Sweet jammed with Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) at the Santa Monica Civic Center around this time 20 years as a tribute to ex Purple, James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin who passed away on Dec 4, 1976.
BTW, Motley Crue had a penchant for ripping off The Sweet as Sixx and Neil are both fans. Kickstart my Heart is a cross between Hellraiser and Action.

OK, I may be getting a lot of strange looks from this post, but I was wondering if anyone out there thought that The Moody Blues were progressive. Songs like Tuesday afternoon, while not all that long, and Nights In White Satin kinda make me think so. I am not a musician, though all my friends are, so I would like some of your opinions, musician or not.

WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT HOW THE SHOW WENT LAST NIGHT!
It was just incredible. They opened with ACOS! Or so we thought. At the end of "innocence" they switched gears to the Mirror/Lie! After that, they played a new song, Burning my soul, which was just incredible! It's all kind of a blurr after that. I believe next was A Solwed down version of Ciaw, which I couldn't figure out what it was for a few minutes. Then was The Killing Hand (!) I can't remember the order of ANYTHING after that, but they played some other new shit, Lines In The Sand, Just Let Me Breathe, Peruvian Skies, and Take Away my Pain, a song written by JP about the death of his father. LitS and JLMB were amazing, as well as PS, which kind of reminded me of Floyd's Have A Cigar at first. Then it got heavy, but TMPA was so moving. Anyway, they played PMU sans intro, and right in the middle of one of the songs, they started playing ACoS, the "Preparing for her flight" part, and then The Darkest of Winters. I was the only person in my little section who screamed "Please Don't Go"! :) Anyway, They played Ytsejam as well (!!) and Learning To Live, and ended with The Crimson Sunset, and came out again for Metropolis as an encore. There were a LOT of little jams going on during songs, which was very cool. I was in the very front, right in front of JP, and I had a killer time. After the show, I got to meet JP (AGAIN!), Derek, and Mike. They all seemed pretty cool but they security guards were all a bunch of dickheads. Anyway, does anyone know if there is an age limit on getting in to the Ct or NJ shows? 1. About trying to get a girlfriend or so to got to a DT concert. Just ask her to go just once. If she doesn't like it then dont ask her to go again. My fiance and I have basically totally different musical tastes. She love alternative and I love metal. We do have some similar likes though. I went to one of her favorite group's concert-Rusted Root. I didn't care for it and when they came around I passed on going and she went with her friends. Just tell her to try it once.
2. I know a lot of people are sad about Jason Becker's death or eventual death. You've got to realize he has touched a lot of people by his music. He got to do what he wanted and play music and play it very well. His death though is/will be a far too early one though. I think anyone who has his latest album Perspective and after listening to it and reading the liner notes have a new perspective on life. We shouldn't take it for granted.
3. DT has got to get their new album out.... I've got to hear these new tunes that everyone says are awesome. I am sure I will come back from a week in St Martin and have to read countless jams describing how great the shows were :( Sigh..

>To answer your question, the lyrics really have very little effect on my >opinion of a song. I wish more bands would release albums that reflect that >attitude and let the instruments take care of the singing.
Well, as I see it, I'm not a musician, but I think if you write music it is because you want to express something. Some feeling that you have about some political topic, a feeling, or just to get something out of your mind. I here don't consider just expressing your ability as music, rather exhibitionism. If you are able to express that without words, that's fine with me. But in many cases it is easier if your epos has a title, or even lyrics. And if you put them on the sleeve, all us non-english understand most of what you're saying. As well I know that many bands uses english because it sounds better that our Swedish, which is rather edgy, still most of them can't express themselves that good, so the lyrical/poethical side goes lost. You just use a plain langauge, which leaves a lot unsaid. Conclusion: A good song, would be even better explained with lyrics, and with changes in rhythm.
The best way of showing your ignorance to lyrics, I think is going to a disco. All of a sudden you'll find yourself cheek-dancing with a girl ( OK, or boy. just don't call me sexist. just make sure it's of opposite sex ) with a song whose lyrics says something about that "It's over", "We'll never see each other again", "Ooh I hate you for what you've done". On those tunes the lyrics don't mean NOTHING more than being another well-biased instrument.
And you guys that want to convince your girl of Liking DT or Rush. Stop it! Face it, they don't just like them that much, and bringing them might destroy your sensation of the concert as well. If you have different musical taste, or litteral, or whateverIAL, just leave it. You are just different and have to accept it. I don't find it necessary to have the exact same liking about that subjective things in a relation, as long a sthe fundamental parts are agreed. So, if your girlfriend is into Take That and has two tickets, would you: a) Leave her, because her taste sucks b) Go with her and spoil 2 hours and 50 $ c) Start liking them, because she's so trying to convince you d) Tell her that she'd better invite a friend, since you don't like them e) All of the above (.....eer, something is wrong here ???) Try to appreciate the things you have in common, and for God sake do never start fighting about these kind of things.
A completely other thing: Wich font are you using, reading Jams? We all now that it's more difficult to read from a screen then paper, but I doubt you print them. I just rcently changed from the default CourierNew9 to BookmanOldStyle10, and I have so far found it easier to read. What do you use, and what is bad? any input is appreciated.
While far off-topic: Did you see the top-scoring of NHL. Sudden first and Foppa second! Mats Sundin and Peter Forsberg that is. Far better then the Finnish Sela:nne and Koivo on fifth and sixth. What? Is it an American/Canadian league? Are you sure? I'm sorry then....
