    Musing about music:

The purpose of music is to garnish our lives with resplendent
introspection. We also use music to interpolate a sense of reciprocal
intellectual stimulation. ( would you not agree ? )
Dream Theater's role in this is one of great extempleation. Their music
conjures much more of a hierarchical rejoinder, almost like that
    of..........of....................................of????
    Awwww,......DAMN it !! I Give up, I can't do it like BAFU does !!!

Jason becker has 2 solo albums,
"Perpetual Burn" and "Perspectives". He did 2 albums with Cacophony,
"Speed Metal Symphony" and "Go Off". The level of guitar mastery displayed
on cacophony is not likely to ever be achieved again by anyone. Ever. That
was the teaming of Becker and marty friedman that just blows my mind every time
i hear it. Becker also guest solos on Marty Friedmans' "Dragon's Kiss", as does
    Friedman on "Perpetual Burn".

This is my 1st posting to the jam after a few months of silent reading :)

    Currently in my changer:

Sound Track: Bill n' Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Sepultura: Beneath the Remains
Grip Inc: Power of Inner Strength
    Megadeth : Rust in Peace
    Vinnie Moore: Mind's Eye
    Marty Friedman: True Obession

guys, if you really want to hear nuno bettencourt shred, get the bill n' ted
sound track. the first track is done by extreme and its the song that
"beethoven" is playing in the music store in the mall. its incredible, not to
    mention catchy as hell :)

    On this topic...
I didn't really think of the voice as an instrument until I heard LaBrie
in "Perfect Strangers" off ACoS (the part before and after JP's solo). In
a part where the band is doing their own thing musically, JL doesn't sing
words, but an actual melody that fits right in. I told myself, "Wow, he's
soloing with his voice." That's cool...

    Jammers-

I can totally relate to the speeding ticket woes. I too had planned
to die without one, figuring it would be a much cooler mark as an
individual in this era of blue hair and nose rings and heroin
overdoses. Doing 75 in a 65 in Arizona trashed all those thoughts
though. But I have accepted (somewhat) my assimilation into the
collective and my insurance rates didn't go up because of it. I
could've fought the ticket though and won easily. Oh well. Thanks
for bringing up such a painful memory Richie. :)

This is getting absurd, I'm seeing notes in here saying, "Jason
Rest in Piece" and others saying that he isn't dead. I told my
girlfriend about his death(she is an AVID becker fan), and she fell
apart. She has been very depressed about it. I almost called her and
told her that he was alive, but then I saw another "rest in peace-
Jason" note, so I'm just confused....This is pretty sad.......Thanx
    in advance.......Dusty

Um, no... he's not. While it's true that that piece, played at the proper
speed *with_the_proper_effects* is pretty quick, it's not drop-dead
    difficult.

Nuno uses a delay for 'Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee'... a delay that
plays the note he just played (once) and does it shortly after he finished
playing it. What does that mean? He plays, say, a single thirty-second
note. What we *hear*, however, is two very quick thirty-second notes, in
    rapid succession.

So in reality, Nuno's playing exactly *half* as fast as it sounds on the
CD, with his effects filling in every other note for him. This is
unrefutably given away at the very end with all the tapping.

They played the intrumental end of MotT at the end of OaMoT on the European
leg of the late '93 tour - you can find this on Mike Bahr's When Dream and

    Hey all,

I have finally seen DT perform live, now I can die.... well, maybe after
Birch Hilll!!! Now I really don't want to go over too much detail as I am
sure others I saw there will probably do a better job (like D-man, Ritchie
(?), Dream 'n'day, or my concert companions). What I DO want to relate are
some of the things that made this special for me. Unfortunately, I can't do
this without a small degree of bragging due to the fact that one of my travel
companions was a VIP (much to my surprise) and was treated accordingly.

We got up there rather early and really had nothing to do, so we go check out
the place. Then, as we are just hanging around, the tour director(?)
recognized our companion, and invites us in. So we are hanging out in the
empty place listening to the techs set some sound levels. Mike P. is hanging
out, and our VIP starts chatting with him. Within the next hour, alomst
everyone from the band (except John M, Of course, He is either on stage
fiddling with his Bass & rack, or out of sight) comes by to say HI. All were
very personable, NO ATTITUDES!!! This was my first chance to meet JLB as I
had met Mike & Derek at the first Ytsecon & Derek's B-day bash, and one John
at each of these, but never had seen JLB Live. He seemed really cool ( I was
a little worried because of all the crap I had heard here that he is NOT so
cool, but read on..). Well, we got to hang out during the sound check, and I
mus t say that these guys have this sh** DOWN. It NEVER ceases to amaze me
when a band can start in the MIDDLE of a JAM, and sound like somone just
turned up the volume on a mike or something!! The soundcheck was cool.
(especially since it was my first)

WHen DT hit the stage with ACoS, and then segued (sp) into other tunes, THAT
was cool. Then they came out with a new tune, Burning My Soul. Did some
more familiars (including a REALLY different version of CiAW. This was a
more funky version and a reliable source said that the version MAY appear
somewhere in the future). HEard some more New tunes, My favorite of which
was 'Lines in The Sand' which Derek said was the first song that he brought
to the band. This song has about everything anyone can want. It's got some
extremely accessible hooks & awesome jams. personally, I think an edit of
this is their best shot at airplay on the radio. They continued to play a
mix of Old & new. After a bit of this, they go into PMU. AWESOME!!!! John
    P. pulled out this double neck guitar (you guitar freaks will obviously find
out everything you can about it, but all I can tell you was that it sounded
good) for the song he had written after his dad Passed, Take Away my Pain.
This is a powerful song. I can't say that I heard all of the lyrics, but
from what I heard, this song was probably a VERY personal exsorcism of some
issues for him. The music Kicked ass too!!! By now, I am just going on
overload, and then they go into YTSEJAM, and it becomes kind of difficult to
decide where to look next as they pass the song back and forth so fast!!!!
Now I am in a gelatinous state, and they go into LTL intro!!! I look over
to Mark, and say Oh no.... not now...... and they of course play the whole
thing. Well, they then leave the stage, and come out with Metropolis as the
    encore. very cool.

Now, under MOST circumstances, this would be it for me, I would find an exit,
get to the car, and drive home in the warm afterglow of the show. I got to
the front stage area, got to see the aforementioned Jammers. Now they start
trying to clear the place, and I would have normally left too, BUt
NOOOOOOooooo. I am with a VIP, we get to go up and say hi to the band. I
must say my most meaningful exchange with any band member of the night was
when I got to talk to JLB. First of all, I had to congratulate him for a
flawless performance. He said "I wonder what they will think on the net".
And I told him that I am on the net too, and he comes back with "I hear what
they say, I see it, but I won;t respond". Now I was really struggling with
whether or not to post this because I know how this list gets when it is
ADVERTISED that the boyz are watching, but my purpose is simple. I had read
a lot of crap about James' Attitude and skill here. I myself had added my 2
cents (none of which was that bad, but..). I don't think that anyone should
censure their posts, or post things that they do not believe, but I DO think
that if you are going to offer any criticisms, you offer them with a bit of
sensitivity. I know that no one here would walk up to James and say "you
know, you fucked that line up" or "you SUCKED that night," He is probably
painfully aware if he makes a mistake, but when pointing these things out,
take into account that when you consistantly point these things out, you are
consistantly rubbing his nose in something that should be better forgotten.
Others criticize his style, as long as you level your critiques in a way
that is not so derogatory, I think you will be best recieved. I say this
because I was a bit poisoned by the general impression the JAM had given me
about James, but after meeting him, I felt that he was the nicest of the
bunch!! I also got to congratulate both Derek & JP on a flawless performance.

I am truly worried about my future DT impressions. Per One of my companions
who had seen DT 20 times, this was the best show he had seen. This was the
First one I had seen. With all of my extraordinary access, and the
perfection of the show, will any other show ever compare for me??? I am
afraid not. But that will not keep me from trying. I hope some of this was
interseting to some of you. I did not mean to brag (well, maybe a little, if
I can't brag to the JAM about DT, who CAN I brag to..). I hope to meet some
more of you at Birch HIl & TGIF.

    Until Then...

I just received the boot CDs Comedy/Tragedy (Thanks Jaime!)... Very
cool, BTW... Now aren't these discs just a boot of the Dance of
Eternity bootleg (a boot of a boot)? If so, someone at one time had
told me that the version of Eve on DoE also had a sample of a portion
of the Lord's Prayer on it (in addition to the "Moo Cow" and "Tower of
Ivory" parts), but it's not on this version. Is there a boot out there
that has another live performance of Eve on it? Thanks....

ps. I am seriously jealous of all you east coast jammers! <G>

    Hi all,

I'm newcommer. My name is Junya Suzuki. I'm Japanese. So my English stuff
    is poor :^(

I love Rush and Dream Theater and many "progressive rock" artists. I've
played instruments (Key and bass). Now, we've played DT tribute band :^) We
already played about a harf of DT materials. I like WDADU especially.

Now I'm also interested in new DT songs. If I could, I'd go to the holiday
    shows...

In Japan, DT is popular. But it is on that among metal (or hard rock) fan.
Probably it is less than you think that publicity of DT, though. Although
Japanese record companies distribute many (too many!) CDs of metal or Hard
rock bands in spite of either popular or not popular. For example, Apollon
(one of jap record company) has distributed Magna Carta's *ALL* catalogs
(incl. both Magellan, Shadow Gallary's 1st, of course!). It's very thankful
to us but, therefore, we are very confused... Do you know Ibanhoe (from
Germany), Athena, Time Machine (from Italy), Head or Tales (from Sweden)
or... These bands are sold as "new DT-like band!"... :^( It's NOT true.
(But I like Ibanhoe, though) What do you think???

    Long song:
I want to say this much.
Song value is NOT settled by its length!!
There are too many worthless long songs. On the other hand, short but great
songs exist. And I think it is very poor idea that to estimate for album
value by means of the price per minute. If anything, I hate long albums
which add worthless, like discarded songs. In '70, artists can only put in
about 40 minutes their single album. So they had make a wise choice among
their materials. Because of this, they could create many *tight* albums.
Now, many bands pack songs in their album do without this... (like
Metallica's LOAD, in my opinion) Plabably only limited artists who have
great song writing ability can create long (70 minutes or more), moreover
tight albums (I think DT has this ability enough).

Then I've collecting Rush and DT bootlegs (CDs, Videos and tapes). I'd like
to trade with US traders. I can carry Japanese (or the other) bootlegs so
if anyone is interested in, please e-mail me.

    Thank you.
