REPORTING LIVE FROM THE "LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP" DEPARTMENT: German rock star
GUNTHER DEITZ crashed to his death when peeved fans refused to catch him in a
crowd-diving stunt. Heavy metal idol Deitz died instantly as he smashed into
the concrete floor after yelling "Catch me!" He regularly stage-dived as a
climax to his show, but fans - annoyed he'd turned up an hour late and then
sacked his guitarist -stepped out of his way instead of catching him. As he
    hit the
concrete, a roar went round the packed stadium in Hamburg, Germany. Fan EGOR
PROSNECKI, 18, said, "He got what he deserved." Wow. Tough crowd*

(that was on the metaverse.com site or something)

Yes, I'm way behind, and, yes, I probably will hate myself for revealing this, but this little "clip" was originally printed in "The Weekly World News." I recall reading this little bit and thinking it was pretty funny. Sigh. I still dream of being a writer for the "News." Doesn't everyone? ;-)

Ok, all you Maryland people on the jam, who among you is planning to go to the Birch Hill show? I would like to go, and I am even willing to provide the transportation...So, what do you say? E-mail me at <kwmadden@pipeline.com> and put something in the subject header relating to DT because I get 40 e-mails a day from another list, the majority of which are promptly deleted... Pat? Backof? Mau? etc... BTW, I live over near the Bay Bridge, so if you live in Western MD forget it! DC area is cool, plus anything in between or on the way or whatever! Let me know.

    Thanks for your patience, non-Marylanders.

If I remember correctly (and I'm not saying I do, cause I don't own the B&T I soundtrack), the song is "Play With Me" and is on their first album "Extreme."

I'd like to second this. I met all the members after Birch Hell last year, and JP, Mike, and Derek various times afterwards. (And Derek again last night). These guys are the most personable, friendly, non-assuming professional musicians you'll ever want to meet. Derek was *genuinely* interested in how the new stuff sounded to us. We couldn't have picked a better band to follow. :)

I have a question of all the people who have seen DT shows recently this year. I went to Birch Hill last year and thought the show was truly amazing, the only problem I had was people trying to mash <mosh...pick whatever spelling you like>. So my question simply becomes: Have the crowds realized that a DT concert is not the time or place to do so?

Ah... The voice is an instrument, just as legitimate as guitar or drums or keys or whatever. To ignore the lyrics of a song, in songs that have meaningful lyrics like most of DT's, is to miss a significant part of the experience (as I said before). Example: yes, it's possible to enjoy a song without paying attention to individual instruments--ignore the guitars, ignore the drums... But I think most people would agree that you have a much deeper appreciation of the music if you DO pay attention to everything. Publishing the lyrics seperately? Why? They're part of the song. You wouldn't suggest that the keys part be taken out of a song and released as a single for those who like keyboards, so the people who don't care much about them wouldn't have to listen. (All right, it's not exactly the same thing, but it's close.) Also, as Chris said (haven't we had this discussion before, Chris? <g>), the lyrics can often provide a toehold to getting into the music... Echolyn being an excellent example. On the subject of lyrical ambiguity... I think that, if done properly, that can be extremely powerful as well. For example, if I look at the lyrics to "Surrounded," I can admit that I probably couldn't analyze them for their meaning and symbolism, etc... But it's the overall feeling conveyed, the ideas only hinted at, that make it so powerful. You don't want everything spelled out for you. Of course, I hate the current trend of lyrics/poetry being random and incomprehensible just for the sake of being random and incomprehensible, but if there's actual meaning behind it, it's pretty impressive. Chris: Nice three-fold answer on the lyrics. Does it hurt, sitting on the fence like that? <g> And you stole my quote! (The meek dirt thing. :) Well, at least you listened to the tape. I was afraid to ask. <g>

    Jammers,

After believing that I had a ticket for the New Haven show tomorrow (This has happened twice so far...), I no longer have a ticket for the show. So, if there is some Jammer out there who has a spare ticket and is willing to sell it to me, I would be very, very grateful. I don't know if tickets are available at the door, but I'm not going to travel 2 1/2 hours to find that out. So, please, someone come through for me. I need to see DT at least once!!!

just to clarify: the term is slamming.

as for slammin' at a dt show, i don't think it's _THAT_ out of line. being one of those who occasionally slam, there are some great tunes to slam to (ciaw espically). the audience that dt brings together is a diverse group, and with that there's gonna be some sort of confrentation.

slamming isn't a bad thing, tho. there have been many shows i've seen (the mighty mighty bosstones, espically) where you not only slam but can dance onstage (albeit for a very small time). there have been shows (like helmet & tool) where there is a baraicade where the slammers can't reach the artists.

wow, i think this is my 1st post in prbably about 8 months....so much for lurking! Just so this has something to do w/DT, i had the random urge to flip on the radio the other day....only to hear Lie!!! even tho they chopped the end, i was still in shock. after the song, the dj's were talking about "what ever happened to those guys? maybe we'll see some new material soon..." could there be hope for DT/radio? nah, it'll never happen. oh, just fyi, this was on 102.7 in cincinnati. now, the real story behind my post:

    > What do you think of that one track...don't remember the name or the > number...but the one where that seemingly Mexican (?) guy goes on and on > about how much Americans suck and are stupid? Very interesting... > > -Nate

the story is something where the guy leaving the message was living w/the tool guys for a bit. i dont remember why or who the guy was, but i guess he was being a pain in most possible ways so the guys kicked him out. for whatever reason he couldnt see how intolerable he had been and got all pissed off and left that message. thats what i remember from danny's explanation of the track a few weeks ago when i saw them. i wasnt listening real closely, but i think i'm fairly accurate. hope that explains whats up. greg

Well, I like to consider myself a musician, but I seldom (if ever) write songs that way. Lyrics, I do, but not the music. Generally, I don't write songs with lyrics in them, because the lyrics tend to control the song, and I don't like that, especially if the lyrics were written by another person. The stuff I generally write tends to be dark, yet passionate. I like to get myself into a nice depression and then sit down at the key/fretboard. Depression, to me, makes it all spill out easier. I can then put all of my emotion into it. Whenever I end up writing a "happy" song, I dump it. I dunno. Maybe I'm weird, but this is the way I do it. How else do you do it?

anyway Nuno's creativity is great, for those who havent heard about his Solo release read guitar magazine for a review or visit jason Kramer's Extreme Korner, this is a great page with all Extreme related, it is also home of netgraffitti (Extreme mailing list) you can subscribe to it sending a message saying subscribe to netgraffitti, Nuno's speed is great, you can see that on Warheads, When Im President, Play with me solo (I have it on a live video) and many other songs, it is a shame that extreme disappeared because they were a great group, but I hope Nuno has the success that he deserves (as a guitarist, shreder or musician, whatever he want to be), If you hear Dweezil Zappa Confessions you can hear Nuno singing on a song called "the kiss" and plays some great cello parts on other song.... Nuno is one of my favorite musicians/guitarists, whatever.... if anyone taped the show that has Metropolis with a cupids dead part on it please email me, I want to hear it...or if anyone wants a copy of my live video from extreme....visit my homepage to see my complete bootleg collection...thanks...

    Whats up people,

School is steadily coming to a close (Manhattan College..Bronx, NY) and my beloved show will be no more. The responses I have gotten over the 'net has been amazing and has totally surpassed any expectations I had when I started this show. Of course, if these responses could equal the response from my brain-dead audience then I would feel like my music was actually reaching some people here. Its been pretty discouraging to the point that I'm not sure its worth my effort to put together another show next semester. If I'm basically playing to myself then whats the use? One high point was when I actually got a request for some GAMMA RAY and STRATOVARIUS. At least I'm reaching someone! Anyhow, if I have a lot of time between classes like I did this semester I'll do it again. But this time I'll make sure to get a time slot when the cafeteria is full so I can cause maximum damage! For my final week I wanna have an all-out instrumental blast!!! Should be cool!

Hi there, was wondering if some jammers could give me an idea of the styles of music of the following bands I am considering picking up.

Tourniquet - albums "Pathogenic Occular Dissonance" and "Psycho Surgery." Are these guys anything like Believer? I have the album "Dimensions" and like it very much.

Masquerade - "Surface of Pain" Metal Blade catalogue describes as "Swedish progressive metal." Any comparisons?

Dead Horse - "Peaceful death and the pretty flowers" Hmmm.

Helstar - "A Distant Thunder" and "Nosferatu" I've only heard good things about these guys, but can't remember any stylistic references.

I'm planning on rounding out my Anacrusis collection; currently I have "Scerams and Whispers." Metal Blade is making "Manic Impressions" "Reason" and "Suffering Hour" available, are these albums in the same vein as "S_a_W?"

Thanks a lot to any who can help me out with reccomendations.

-doug currently listening to Metal Massacre XII compilation (has Divine Reagle)

ps - Eagerly awaiting next FW album, sounds like it is really gonna be a winner. I've been a listener since I saw the video for "Silent Cries" on Headbangers ball. Getting Marc Zonder was the best thing that happened to that band! Definitely my fave drummer (sorry Mike P. you're a close 2nd!)
