Last night in New Haven was the best concert I have ever seen-
PERIOD. (I won't review it as many Jammers already have) There was
only one problem: I collapsed during a certain song (which I can't
describe because I didn't write the word SPOILER in the subject). I fell
right down to the floor. I had been feeling very sick all night and I
hadn't eaten all day (that'd better be the reason, 'cause I don't need
to deal with any kind of brain illness!). I just wanted to clear up the
fact that I was NOT under the influence of any chemical substance (I am
    very much against drugs actually).

Two things I have to get off my chest:
1)James' voice was spectacular last night. It was the highlight of the
    show.
2)James' leather pants were kind of lame.

O.K. I'm all done here. I hope to see a lot of you guys at The Srtand
    on Thursday (I don't have a Ytsejam shirt so I don't stand out). I'll
be wearing my maroon "Fix For '96" T-shirt and my white DT hat that I
bought at one of the holiday shows last year.

    -Jonathan Dery

Oh yeah- I have a new favorite album and it hasn't even been recorded
    yet!!!

Well, I have now been Ytsede-virginized. I can say I've seen DT
and lived. What a GREAT SHOW!!! The New Haven show was awesome!!
Hmm...can I get any more cliche'd? Oh. I can die a happy man. Now
    that's cliche.
But seriously, I think I've been spoiled for life. I've heard the
boots, talked to people who have seen em live, read posts on the show.
Nothing can compare to seeing them live. Nothing.
Highlights of the trip and the show. The four of us, Mike Burstin,
Brian W., Skadz and myself left from Boston about 5:30ish or so. Now,
we were supposed to leave at 4:00, but rush hour, and the weather reared
its ugly head, and Brian and I were waiting for 90 minutes at the
Riverside Bus Stop waiting for them. The highlight of that part of the
trip was the guy at the Stop singing, "It's fuckin' Friday, and I'm gonna
light me up a fuckin' Fatty." And then from behind us, the smell of weed
wafting in our general direction... Whatever. So we had a little
    entertainment before the concert.
The trip was slow for the first half. It took us 4 hours to go what
would have normally taken 2 because of the weather. But hey! We got a
lot of preconcert DT in. So we get there 10 minutes before R&M get
onstage. Found Merlo. For those of you who WERE paying attention
before/after the show. Skadz and D-Man did their shouting thing. No one
    looked. D-Man laughed.
R&M are good. I really like these guys. They said something
about an album in 3 months. I think if I can find it, I'll get it.
But that was a warmup... DT hit the stage at about 11:00 or so.
The set list was exactly the same as previously. The new stuff was very
good! The only songs I'll comment on are Peruvian Skies, and Take Away
My pain. Man, these songs are good! Peruvian Skies start out laid back,
and the finale just blows you mind away!!! The lyrics of Take Away My
Pain (those that I could catch) were very good, I can't wait to catch
this on the album. I'm a sucker for a well done crescendoing song.
And John Myung. I did'nt know you could DO that with a bass. He
was playing that 6 string for all that it was worth! He may not move
around much or anything, but MAN. Bass that good should be ILLEGAL!
James sounded better live tonight than what I've ever heard him.
His little flub on AH/tKH gave Mike the chance to sing a little.

There must not have been as many die hard fans there as I
expected. When The Ytsejam came on, it sure seemed to me that a lot of
people stood there and wondered what the heck this song was.
Good to see a couple of lurkers come out of the night to intro
themselves to some of us at the end of the show. I was a lurker for 2
years at my undergrad in MN before I moved out here. The frequent
    posters don't bite... honest :)!

Other than them messing with the sound off and on all night, the
concert was a good time. I just got my ticket to the Strand today, so
I'll be seeing a lot of y'all there!!!

                                                    -jeremy

PS Anyone from Boston still possibly have an open seat for Birch Hill??
I'll pay for gas if ya do...

    Hi all!
Hmmm....before I reply to what Mark Scudder said in regards to Derek's
playing, lemme just commend him on how he *tastefully* stated his opinion (IMO
:) ), without getting bitchy, arrogant, etc. Anyways...

    Mark sed:
    >He's a great player and writer in his own right, but I am
    >of the opinion that he butchered some of Kevin's better
    >lines.
    <snip>
    >There were points at Poughkeepsie where the entire feel of a section
    >was ruined because Derek was supposed to be playing one of Kevin's
    >brilliantly written melodic leads (no matter how many or how few notes),
    >and he was doing an arpeggio as fast as he could.

I guess how Derek's changes sound is a matter of opinion - I think part of it
has to do with the fact that you're used to Kevin's parts and so straying from
that doesn't seem right or normal. I can sympathize with this to a certain
extent - hearing that LTL has some different stuff in it makes me nervous and
excited at the same time - nervous cuz I love every part of that song, but
excited cuz I'd like to see how they've updated/changed it.

    >The new stuff sounded good, and ACoS sounded like he was
    >happy with what he came up with in the first place.

Obviously Mark doesn't have it in for Derek. :) I don't really understand the
statement in regards to ACoS, but I'm curious to know you're opinion of the
changes made in ACoS from the original version to the new version, and for
that matter, the changes made in what now is known as CiA9ITG. :)

    >Seriously, this is music that has to be kept
    >in a certain amount of structure. It's just so complicated that we can't
    >have somebody doing something *completely* different than was originally
    >intended.

I s'pose, but what about other bands that have members change and put a new
spin on things? For instance what about Randy Rhoad's soloing in the old
Sabbath material? I know DT's stuff is more complex, but I personally like
Randy's interpretations of Sabbaths stuff (on RR Tribute) better than the
originals. Or what about Neil Peart's intrepretations of John Rutsey's stuff
from Rush's first album. Though I'm not as familiar with there stuff, I'm
sure some Yes fans can point out some better decisions that Rick Wakeman made
over the original keyboardists playing (forgot the guys name) and there are
other bands as well. (BTW, I'm not trying to start an argument/war/whatever -
I'm just curious and trying to have a conversation :) ). I guess if nothing
else, it's cool to hear an alternate version of the song - whether it's as
good, better or worse than the original is a personal choice.

    >Those of you who've seen shows so far know that they can do a
    >lot of strange and different stuff without putting cracks in that
    >foundation.

Dunno 'bout that - I haven't been to (nor will I be at) any of the shows. :(

    >Because it was the first show they've done in a year, I'm worried
    >it's going to become a permanent thing.

Perhaps, it might be permanent, but who knows maybe Derek's interpretations
may become more to your liking as time goes by. :)

    And one other thing....

    Mr. Elliott sed:
    >Well, the secret is in the mail, so you should find out for yourself exactly
    >what it is soon!!!!!

And the guy gets an EOJ (whoops! - sorry Itchy!) I mean EOD on top it!!

Kewl!!! Okay, for those of you who have heard the new songs, how about
guessing at what the title is? (if you've received the fanzine, *don't* post
the old/possible title!!) If this has already been done, forgive me as I just
re-subscribed, but if it has been done, can someone send me a list of
    "titles"? Thanx.

And one other request - anyone who talks to any band members - tell us what
the conversations are about - especially progress on the new
    album/producer/more songs being written/etc.

    Peanut butter and jelly jammers...

It has been a while since I've posted. Well, since the last time I posted
(end of October) I have changed my major from mathematics to psychology
as a junior. And the cool part is that I'll still be able to graduate on
    time.

Birch Hill: Yes, I am going next week. I actually know some DT fans at my
school who are willing to go. My one friend Tony is more excited than I
am and I'm a bigger DT freak than he is. I almost fainted last year at
Birchy Hilly (too damn crowded). I hope that doesn't happen again.

Anyways, what I realy wanted to post about is Rush:

I saw the new Rolling Stone magazine in Sam Goody yesterday and noticed
that there was an interview with Geedy Lee in it. I was shocked. Is this
the first time they have ever covered Rush? I remember in the November
issue of Guitar magazine Alex Lifeson said that Rolling Stone hates Rush
and that they have never been covered in their magazine. I'm wondering
why now Rolling Stone has decided to cover them.

I'm about as hardcore a Kevin Moore fan as there is, and I have to
completely disagree with you that it was a bad decision to leave DT. When
it happened, I was as upset about it as anybody. But if he'd stayed with
the band, we never would have gotten music meant to be heard or the
chromakey demo, which IMO would be a *huge* loss.

I hope he releases some of the MMTBH songs officially, especially Blanket,
Shallow, and Even the Waves. With Zonder on drums. Wow.

DOH!!! PSYCHE!! And you thought I'd make a stupid mistake like that. :P

    raitz rote:
    >How many times have you wondered about TOWHTSTS and thought, "What
    >for flying fuck's sake does this mean?"

Hey now - any *true* 'Jammer has *that* acronym in his/her everyday

C'mon now, say "TOWHTSTS" with me...

    >Heheh, I tried to be objective, but damn, I really like KevMo's stuff
    >and to hear that the band thinks that "Kevin's dead" really pisses me off.

I dunno if this is obvious to you or not, but my guess as to the "Kevin's
dead" statement (obviously not literal) is simply to let the whole thing rest
    - he's not coming back, so it's no use crying over spilled milk.

    >Also, on my shitty bootleg, "Skyway of Nightmares," there's a really

I think most of the shows played in late 92 had Kevin doing a little solo
    piece before WFS.

The unbelieveably quiet Benny Law-saade sed:
    >Yes, I'm still alive. :)

Ya know, I was just thinking "Gee I wonder what happened to Ben" right before
I got down to your post. No kidding. How come so quiet? Don't tell me you
    got grounded AGAIN!

DAMMIT! If you would've told Jenny that I liked Sally then that would've been
okay. But because of that, because your friends with that weasal Billy (who
BTW hates pudding) and because you told that big bully that I said stuff about

Whoa there. Yes, the dueling keyboards of DT has gotten a bit out of
hand in the past, but that got annoying mainly because people were forming
all sorts of opinions without ever hearing the man show his own stuff. Now
we finally get to hear how Derek is really contributing to the band, and I
think it's certainly a topic worth discussing.

I think it's natural that Derek add his own embellishments to the music
(as Ben said, he's probably had little else to do the last few months),
but from what the original poster was saying, he went far beyond this
and basically threw out many of the original keyboard lines completely.
While this isn't a crime in itself, from the sounds of it, the lines
he replaced them with weren't very good (in one person's opinion anyway).

I admit I'm a big Kevin fan and will be holding Derek to a far higher
standard than is probably fair to him, but that shouldn't take away from
the opinions of those who found something of his that they didn't like.

Personally, being biased as I am, I'm somewhat disappointed too that the
original music will probably be forever changed in a live setting.
Fortunately I will always have the studio releases to listen to, so
this isn't that big of a deal. But I would certainly be interested in
hearing other peoples' opinions of Derek's changes to the original songs.

    Hey, at least it's DTC...

    Hi All :)

I remembered the reason I run this list last night. And I don't think I will forget it for a while. My favorite band in the whole world put on a show last night that was just incredible. I think I finally understand what Koba means by brain-hurting. There were points in the show I was so amazed I just sat there with my jaw dropped not being able to speak. It was that fucking incredible.

First off, I did not like Toad's. The layout is very wierd and was not real good for this show. It was too small and looked to be a bit oversold. The acoustics of the place weren't too bad though, so that was cool, but I really would have like to be a bit closer, but moving in the floor was not much of a possibility.

The ride down sucked :( Five hours in a car are never fun, but five hours on traffic filled snow covered roads are alot worse. But at least we didn't miss the show :)

The show, well, rocked :) The band, now known as Dream "Let's take every song we have and rework them and play them all in one night" Theater was incredible. I like to judge a band's performace on two things. The first of course is how well they play and sound. Well, the band was amazingly tight. Things just flowed right in to each other and the band just sounded amazing. James's singing blew me away, he sounded so so good. The rest of the band was just as amazing. The set list was the same as the two nights before and was just incredible. I never thought I would see Another Hand/The Killing Hand or The Ytse Jam live, but I guess I was wrong. I have to agree with the people who said that it seemed like noone knew what Another Hand/The Killing Hand was, it was kinda funny. James missing the first verse was also rather amusing. :)

The new material was great. I liked how it was a good mix of stuff. They had some real heavy stuff, some slow ballad stuff, and some amazing prog stuff. I can't really get too deeply in to the songs just yet. Let me wait until I get another few listens next week and I will post better reviews.

The second thing I like to judge a band's performace on is whether or not they look like they are actually enjoying it themselves. I have seen a few shows where the band just looks like they can't wait til this is over so they can go home. Well, I definately wasn't disappointed here. Mike, as usual, was having a blast on his drumkit, smacking himself in the head, boucing around, standing, sitting, singing, etc. Derek seems to be definately fitting in to the band real well. He and Mike were pointing back and forth at each other laughing up a storm half the time. It was real amusing. John P was his usual self, coming up to the front and moving back and really looked like he was having a good time. John M on the other hand just kinda stood there doing that amazing thing he does with his bass, but not really showing any emotion, which was expected.

Overall, it was an amazing show. It was cool meeting jammers afterwards and seeing some people I haven't seen in a year (or just a few weeks :). And I had a great time. Too bad I was so shot I slept all day today :)

Well, enough from me for now :)

OK. Firstly, I just resubscribed. Fear me now.

Secondly. The KM vs DT debate. Well, I haven't seen anything yet, but why wasn't this anissue last year when Derek was playing with DT during the holidays, or during the Awake tour? Why is all this coming up now? And also, Derek can't possibly play those parts accurately. Not sayng Derek sucks, but have you tried to imitate a keyboardist like Kevin without music? Just by ear? Let me tell you guys, it's really hard to do. And Derek is going to inject his personality into the parts. Rick Wakeman once said in a yes documentary video that keyboardistss usually try to imitate parts but what usually happens is that the parts become different anyway. If you have the YesYears video, check out the end for his quote, which would obviously be better than mine. Guys, I am a keyboard player, I know how hard Derek's job is, and maybe he's trying too hard to impress. I have faith in the guy. I know, going in, that they parts will be different. I was at Birch Hill last year, I know what to expect. And I can't wait.

Secondly, I have ben getting questions on my radio show about Fates Warning news, like what is up with the new album and is Kevin More playing keys on it? Somebody email me with FW news so I can update my listeners.

Thirdly, I need to know right now from you guys if you have any questions for DT. The reason I am asking you this is because I think I have an interview iwth the band thanks to radio station connections. I of course will be taping the thing and transcribing the entire interview for the Jam, lucky me, and it will be aired on my prog rock show. But, I want to know if the Jammers have any equestions they would like to see answered. Send me email at s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu and put DT questions in the subject. Mind you, I can't use every question, because I have a few of my own, and I have to be selective in what I pick, but send your questions to me and I will see what I can accomplish. This is your chance, guys. Bombs away.

Damon, expecting more email than he wants, Fibraio, the guy with a DT interview. And you don't. hahahahahahahaha.

    Hey,

I just got back from the show at Toads Place. The Setlist was the same as posted above. Here are some quick Highlights and Low Points -

High Points - Rudess/Morgenstein opening act - they were awesome - No vocals, just a guy on Keys, and a guy on Drums jamming - unlike anything I've ever heard. Cant wait for the album. - Mike Portnoys' Backup Vocals on Burning My Soul, he has a really cool voice that fits the song nicely - He is no James Labrie, but surprisingly good - Some of the Re-mixes of the songs were really cool. Also, the way in which they 'faded' back into ACOS, and then out of it was really cool - THEY played Another Hand/The Killing Hand - James gets caught in the stairway, and misses the opening of TKH, while all band members look at each other in disarray, Mike Portnoy, alertly grabs his microphone and begins singing the opening "An Angels Kiss, Now Fallen . . . - James sang by far the best version of The Killing Hand, I have ever heard - when he sang "the sea is calling me, my spirit must return..." part, it was particulary moving. Much better than any version I've heard so far. - Take Away My Pain is a VERY emotional song and quite beautiful, can't wait to hear this on an album. - In one of the songs,(Lines in the sand???, I am not sure) MYUNG does another one of those incredible tapping things, just like Metropolis. - THEY played YTSEJAM - Met D-Man and Skadz, after they saw my shirt I got at the YTSECON III - My Friend showing up at the Show, and handing me backstage passes - Meeting Mike Portnoy - When Mike Portnoy noticed my YTSEJAM shirt and says "HEY is that one of the new YTSEJAM shirts, I need to get one, turn around, what does it say on the back" - Met some cool Jammers backstage, D-man, Ritchie(the guy who got the speeding ticket the other night), his girlfriend Jill, VoxMan, and a couple of others whose name I did not get.

LOWS - My Ears are STILL RINGING like crazy - The new album is still a long ways away.

See you all at Providence on Thursday
