    Hi!

Oh please please please don't go on with this fuckin hair debate
anymore. We already had to go through this in the early days of
the ytsejam and I hated it. Ok, I posted something about Kevins
new picture and YES I think he looks like playing in Oasis now,
but hell, I REALLY DON'T CARE!!! The music is it what counts...

BTW, the music business is a funny thing. Everybody only complains
about anyone. It's really fun listening to those people. :)

I'd like to open a donation account for poor musicians and bands.
    Anyone with me? :)

    Bye.

    Bernd.

My two cents about Believer vs. Tourniquet --

I think that Tourniquet has a lot more classical influence (actually kind
of baroque influenced) as evidenced by their precision, etc. Listen to the
instrumental Whitewashed Tomb, for example. Very classical in nature.

On the other hand, Believer is much more influenced by 20th century
composers like Schoenberg. Trilogy of Knowledge is a 12 tone piece (like
much of Schoenberg's work) and they are much more atonal and polyrhythmic
than Tourniquet. The violin work on Trilogy and Dies Irae reflects later
19th and 20th century music more than the classical period.

Also note that Believer is no longer together (actually, on indefinite
hiatus) since Dimensions. Tourniquet has only Ted left as an original
member - Gary and Victor left. Any Tourniquet fans will be interested to
know that Gary is starting a band with Guy Ritter in the style of older
    Tourniquet stuff.

Anyone that like DT because of complexity will probably like Believer
(except possibly for the thrashiness). Fans of more melodic and tonal work
    will appreciate Tourniquet more.

Does anyone know for sure who the producer of DT's new album is? Has this
already been mentioned? For those of you going to the shows - is the new
    music more groove oriented?

    Thanks

Could be one of three things.

Could have been Derek. Perhaps his monitor just wasn't loud enough. Maybe he was playing too slowly. Maybe all keyboard players are really slow. Kevin Moore played excruciatingly slowly at every show I ever saw him play. Maybe staring at all those black and white keys causes vertigo.

Could have been Mike. If DT plays a song that starts with just the drums, like "6:00," he'll fly into it like a freight train on plutonium. Sometimes you can see the sweat on Petrucci's forehead when this happens, "dangit, I've never played my parts at this breakneck speed, what the hell is Mike thinking?" But, then again, when Marton jammed with him on "Erotomania," they were so full of adrenaline that they started off way to fast, the keyboard notes in the beginning were pumping away, when in came Mike's bell ride almost TOO slowly to tame things down. Ding. Ding. Ding.

Or, it could have been The Digital Man at the soundboard fiddling with the Digital Delay in the monitors. Setting the monitors with a digital delay can be a real pain when the musicians on stage are trying to play in sync. Try it. It's a riot.

    > I am in no way trying to pick on Derek or the rest of the band.

Well I AM! Derek! Grab some amphetamines, boy! I wanna hear James introduce you as Derek SherKHAN!! Derek CHOPINIAN!! And Mike! Get ridda that third arm! Just froth at the mouth a little and they'll HAND you the ritalin over the counter without a prescription!

Prog metal? Technical thrash is more like it. Well, this will eventually lead to the definition of prog, so I'll hear 'em my way, you hear yours. We're both right anyway. :)

    > I was looking at the Boston Phoenix web page this afternoon >and noticed that there is an extra opening band for the Providence >show. They are called the Beth Hart Band. Anyone ever heard of them?

I was listening to WHJY (RI) the other day, and they played a song by them, and announced that they'd be opening for DT on Thursday. The song sounded OK, nothing to write home about. Fairly rockin' tune, female vocalist...

They haven't said anything about Einstein opening, though. Are there 2 openers, or was Einstein dropped?

    -----

And to answer some recent questions about the Providence show...

    - The Strand's webpage (www.strandtheatre.com) states that it'll be "Dream Theatre" and Einstein (featuring Jonathan Mover). However, I heard on the local radio, that it is DT with the Beth Hart band opening. I guess you can draw your own conclusions. :)

    - All Strand shows are all ages. They check ID's at the door for wristbands, because they do have a bar, but don't worry. As long as you have a ticket, you can go.

    - There is no formal pre-show meeting, however it was my suggestion that if anyone wants to get together that we meet at the Trinity Brewpub. It's only a few blocks from the Strand, and we can eat, drink and be merry before the show. Anyone who is interested can e-mail me for directions.

    Thank you, and good night.

Yipes, that's too much for *me* to think about. I just play it. :) I use my neck pickup, modest distortion, and I got up to speed by using my delay as my metronome, setting it to a comfortable speed and gradually speeding it up.

    >Nuno, on the other hand, plays that piece with just stacatto picking. All >he's got working for that technique is the heel of his right hand cutting >the sound off. Are you saying that Nuno pumps his right hand up and down while he's playing? (after picking up guitar) Oh, no. I guess I never thought about what I was doing when I play that...

And are you also saying that Nuno played with Megadeth? Or just another example of another guitarist? *shrug*

What I think is *really* tough are Joe Satriani's tapping/hammer-on arpeggios that he does in "Mystical Potato Head Groove" (or whatever it's called) on Flying in a Blue Dream. He uses his right hand to mute his strings near the headstock and just hammers these arpeggios across all the strings with only the strength and coordination in his left.

    >> What we *hear*, however, is two very quick >> thirty-second notes, in rapid succession. >Out of every four beats, Nuno picks the first and third. He plays the odd numbers, the delay fills in the evens.

Right. Um, I *meant* to say that, but I appreciate your correction/addition.

Not very forgiving at all, no. Do-able: yes; easy: no; impossible: not at all. But I gather you agree.

Yes. O.K. metal. But the guitarist, Harry K. Cody is a great player. I mention this since so many here saw G3 and were blown away by Stu Hamm. Cody plays on two of Hamm's solo albums, "Kings of Sleep" (he's ALL over this one and this is easily one of my favorite albums of all time), and "The Urge", which also features a great performance by none other than Eric Johnson. Buy Cody's playing is KILLER.

    Hiya, Kids.

I have some unpleasant news to report. After speaking with Mike Bahr for some time, he and i have decided to stop the production of "the echolyn collection." the reason is simple: the recordings that echolyn did are owned by sony. if sony was ever to find out what mike and i wanted to do, we'd go to jail. this is not something that mike and i wish to happen, so we must stop this before it starts.

I am truly sory that it came to this. I wish i could have seen this dream come alive, but sometimes you need to see the forest despite the trees.

You might be thinking, "where's mike?" i've spoken to him, and his internet provider has been down for a week. he's being forced (against his will, mind you) to be off the net. for those of you who need to contact him, e-mail me and i'll give you his #.

again, let me repeat: the echolyn collection will _NOT_ happen. if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.
