I totally love this song, although the rest of the album is
pretty lame! I was on a retreat a few years back (1992), and it was
the theme seong, so I still have a copy of it and listen to it every
once in a while!

Guys, evn though I totally swear by Eric Johnson, this had to be
the most amazing guitar show I've ever seen (including G3). I mean,
I saw Adriann Lagg w/ EJ a few weeks ago, and the are both two
fave's of mine, but steve Vai just put in 110% into his preformance.
I saw a few people w/ DT shirts on (if they are jammers, sorry I
didn't say "hi"); I was wearing my Awake Tour shirt (got A LOT of
positive comments on it, too). But the guy played over two hours,
and the energy level was just outrageous. I've seen too many major
concerts of my favorite bands and guitarists before, but this was
something that dreams are made of. His instrument is truly an agent
to his spirit. . . I don't know too many other forms to interpret
the perfirmance.

Vince, let me explain my post a little bit.
Part of it comes out of frustration with my lack of musical work over the
last year. Part of it comes out of listening to a little too much keyboard
bashing by the general public as well as musicians. The post, while
containing no smilies, was half-hearted, although there were some serious
tones. Depending on your synth sound, you can pull off power chords, but try
power chords on a straight piano sound and it sounds empty. Distortion is
what fills in the sound of power chords. I have been playing keys for 18
years, I think I am pretty good, although I can use lessons to improve
myself. I am not Kevin More or Keith Emerson, although I wish I were nearly
that good. I hold my own, people tell me I am good, and I know my ability.
Problem is that keyboardists don't get much work due to the surplus of
alternative bands out there. Besides, in mainstream music, which is what gets
all the credit for great music, how many good keyboardists do you hear of? I
mean, you hear constantly about Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and their guitar
solos and stuff. When do you hear about a great keyboard solo? Progressive
music is the only place, and people don't give prog the respect it deserves.
Some of this stuff is close to the level of classical music in composition.
You never see people analyze the music of Pearl Jam in this way. Andf I liked
PJ's first three albums. So, part of this is my frustration, but it was also
meant as good fun. Should've thrown in the smilies, but hey, we're human.
P.S. No woman has ever faked it with me, thank you.

Hey, if anyone is going to the I Mother Earth concert in St. Louis
this evening (Wed.), I'll be wearing my Rush T4E shirt, probably
smoking a stogie. Oh, and if anyone is going, and can give Rip a
ride, I'm sure he'd appreciate it (I would, but I have to work until
8, so it'd be pretty tough to do that and get there before the show
ends). Cheers.

Well, Mape, as much as this has gotten way out of hand, I'd give the "You're

That keyboardist supremecy trash is a work of feeble mind. Anyone that
cares about MUSIC, and not image or fame doesn't give a shit about what
instrument something's coming from... it's about the quality of the sound
and composition being created. To say that guitarists are better/worse than
anyone is not only completely ignorant and opinion based, but also a waste
of time because we all know guitarists are the most talented human beings on
the planet (J/K)

Steve.
The guy from the Black Crows actually isn't bad. He does his job, he
provides background. But his sounds are cool. And listen to him a little more
carefully.
While I am not a big fan, Trent Resner has done a lot for keyboardists,
although I wonder if the guy can play a keyboard solo besides creating weird
sounds.
And the guy from Smashing pumpkins? Well, you have a point there. Yes,
there are idiots in the world.
I know there are crappy keyboard players out there, but if you stack up
crappy guitarsits next to crappy keyboardists, the room would be full of more
crappy guitarists, listen to top 40 radio for a good list. Yeah, most
keyboardists are restricted to background noise and holding out chords. If
you want to hear good keysmen, listen to jazz, or progressive rock. And this
might make you puke, but Billy Joel and Elton John are damn fine musicians
for what they do. And I am sure there are others, but on a hole, outside of
progressive music, which gets the shaft anyway, can you name any good
keyboardists that are respected in the music world in the same way guitarists
are glorified?

Oh, come on, Mads.
When did I ever say that all keyboardists were god and the guitar world
sucked. I acknowledge greatness on any instrument. You may ask, who am I to
judge greatness? Well, to quote a great Genesis song, "I know what I like,
and I like what I know." Maybe my statements were a little too general. But,
I stand by my argument. I realize that bafuvai was joking, but he touched a
nerve in me at a tough time in my life, and while I already defended my
comments five pots ago, I am not backing off this easily. If I had my way, I
would be making my comments musically, but unfortunately, I am having that
problem right now of finding musicians I can work with who want to stretch
their minds beyond alternative music. I mean, you never had to deal with
being rejected from a band, not because you couldn't play, but because you
couldn't drive. So, cut em a break, OK? I hear all over, keyboards are
cheesey. Keyboard, dance music. And how much respect does Keith Emerson get
in the non-progressive world? Or Kevin More, or derek or Rick Wakeman? Hell,
Steve Vai will piss all over Eric Clapton, and Eric Clapton is a more
respected musician. Why? The man can play a good blues solo. Great. I give
the man credit. But let's face it, take Clapton out of his element, and he's
lost. I think Steve Vai can play the Blues as well as what he does. Mind you,
I like Clapton, but why is he more respected than Vai? And this is just in
the guitar world. Bring a keyboardist in, and he will never get any respect.
I've experienced it myself in my own bands. Guitarists who didn't want to
share their spotlight because that's what rock has done for the guitarist.
Rock msuci tells the guitarist that he is God and all else should step back
and let him be worshipped. along comes Joe synth player and he has been
forcedd to be a session player because the guitar is king. Why? Keyboards can
do everything guitars can do, well almost. But guitars can't do everything
keyboards can do. Granted, we can't do finger tapping well, but let's see you
guys hit some of those chords pianists hit. So there are tradeoffs. I can't
count how many times I threatened my guitar player that if he didn't turn my
volume up so that non-animals like human beings could hear me, I'd leave the
bar. All because rock music gave him an ego problem. And I can't even tell
you how much it irritated me when another band kicked me out because I didn't
fit into the alternative music scene and they wanted to be popular and
trendy. So, after 18 years, I amscrewed, while you guitar players always have
work. I am just as much a viable musician as anyone else. And I am speaking
for other trained keyboardists as well. There are schleps in any instrument,
drums, bass, hell most bass players just provide bottom end. How many Geddy
Lee's and Fleas are there, really?> Not many. Especially in early rock music.
But bass players always will have work because you need that bottom end.
Drummers will always have work to keep a beat. Vocalists will always have
work, and in that department, we have some real winners. But why do
keyboardists have to be expendable? Guitar rock gets boring after a while.
How much distortion can one take?
OK, I am getting hysterical, so I will stop. Go ahead, accuse me of feeling
sorry for myself. Maybe I do. But I want my due, too. I think all musicians
should be respected, not just guitar players. Guitar players need to share
the spotlight a little.
Sorry if you are a non-egomaniac guitar player. I know you exist somewhere,
I just think you are in the minority. I have yet to work with
non-eogotistical musicians. I can't wait for the day I find you.

Hey all. Jeff Beck did a song called "The Pump" for the movie. Tangerine
Dream did some soundtracks, but not for "Risky Business". They did one
for a movie featuring James Caan that was incredible. The movie also
featured (then unknown actor) James Belushi. The movie is Thief. It is
worth a look-see in my book. Later all....

Hey, gang. Dammit, where's Hairball when you need him? Anyway, my CD
player has become very temperamental. CDs that have no scratches, no
lint, no nothin' have started to skip and even grind to a halt, almost
always on track 7 for some reason, though occasionally 6 or 9. What if
6... oh, never mind. These discs, incidentally, work just fine in my
other CD players. So, if I buy one of those expensice CD-Player Cleaning
Kits, will that help? Is there a cheaper solution, like alcohol and
Q-Tips for tape players?
And about this new Queen tribute: Is it in stores already? I asked two
local music stores today (not in Fellow's Balls, but in VT nonetheless),
and they haven't heard a thing about it. Can someone tell me the exact
title and the label it's being released on? Thanks!
