Well, my cover's blown. Damn. :)

    >you need to smell the musical coffee and perk-o-late.

Ahhh... . Musical coffee. One of my favourite flavours. I think
I'll go brew me a pot right now. of course, is it okay to brew
musical coffee in a regular drip maker?

Yeah, the $21.12 gas fill up would have been over for me if my tank
wasn't on fumes, and if I didn't have a 22.1 gallon tank, so that
really was it being full (of course, I did intentionally stop it on
that number, though, so it wasn't THAT cool :).

Talk about cool parents, man. When i woke up this morning (after one
of the nights I crashed on the couch), I heard my dad saying
"Savatge," right before the first strains of the overture from Dead
Winter Dead. My dad likes 'Tage. wow. :)

On the Pantera mailing list someone came up with a great idea. He decided to
organize an officail mailbomb of MTV. All us non-europeans have had it with
the lack of Headbangers Ball. We aren't going to put up with it any longer.
On Dec. 20, we take revenge. On this date, I ask everyone to mail MTV at
feedback@mtv.com and be sure to yell at them about there lack of Headbangers
ball. This is not a joke. This is going to happen. Nobody just sit back and
say "Well, everybody else will, so I won't". Everybody has to do this. Spread
the word. Post to every newsgroup, email list and chatroom you can find. We
    have to make this happen.

Your Mission, If you choose to accept it:

E-mail feedback@mtv.com at least 10 times on Dec. 20th, telling them to bring
    back headbangers ball.

IF THE MUSICIAN CAN GET THE FEELING TO THE AUDIENCE, THEN THE INSTRUMENT

IS BEING PLAYED TO THE MAXIMUM, DOESNT MATTER WHAT IS....

    KEYBOARDS PROVIDE SOME THINGS...GUITARS OTHERS..

THE PERFECT EXAMPLE IS DREAM THEATER....THEY USE BOTH, AND PUT THEM TOGHETER

I was amazed that the doors opened when they did... when I saw DT

very glad that they opened on time...

Anyone up here in Boston have one that I can borrow? I still have not
gotten around to signing up, so I'd like to burn a copy for my own
    personal use...

    > >> The bass in the mix might actually have been too high,

Don't kniow if I am replying to my own, but, yes, bass was way up
    there for once...

Also, speaking of being too loud, I was about 2 feet from the front
speakers... my left ear was sorta bad, but I am one of the ones who
very much believed in using ear plugs... I have my $9 Sonic ][
plugs, and they work miricles... not only does it make the sound more
reasonable, but I believe it makes the shows sound better... I think
that this was a topic here a few years ago, but if you think about it,
the sound people have ear plugs in, so they are tuning the sound to
sound good to them, with plugs... so you get sound closer to what
they are trying to hear... (I forget how long ago it was posted... I
was just remembering that I have been here since Jan of 93... anyone
else been around here since then also???)

The origional version of ACOS had "please don't go" in it, and it just
sounds so natural there... BTW, I definatly screamed it, but I was so
close to the speakers, I am sure that nobody heard...

I saw this in Addicted to Noise the other day...

Steve Vai's Tour Bus Up In Smoke

Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports: Next time you look up the word "ironic" in the dictionary, don't be surprised to find a picture of guitarist Steve Vai (who, on a totally unrelated note, I once saw open up a stadium show for David Bowie on the official Bowie "retirement" tour in the early '90's) next to a crossed-out picture of Ms. Morissette.

Vai and his band were sleeping on their tour bus on Monday (November 25) when the guitarist woke up to the smell of smoke, and it wasn't from his fingers, either. The bus was on fire, and while all the crew and band members escaped the blaze, nearly all their gear, two of Vai's prized guitars and all the new orchestral scores (?) he was working on were burned to a crisp. Oh, yeah, the irony part. Vai's new album is called Fire Garden , and this was, of course, the "Fire Garden Tour." Ouch.

What a bummer! At least no one was injured.

On a different note, I just got a cd from the band The Gathering called Mandylion. This album is pretty cool. Heavy music with a Celtic influence and female vocals. Some really haunting stuff. The title track is just so good. Anybody else like this band or heard any of their other albums?

    The YtseGoon again roared,

    >jazz for the ytsejammer....why isn't coltrane one of them.

IF...you read my whole post, you'd have read:

    |Well, I by no means am a "jazz listener" in the true sense of the phrase, but I |do listen to some stuff that is closer to Jazz than anything else. See, it said "Closer to Jazz than anything else." Read it again to make sure you have it straight. Now think about it. It's a list of stuff that can help someone acquire a taste for Jazz.

So I listed stuff that I am familiar with. Read that sentence again to make sure you have it straight. It says "stuff that *I* am familiar with". Was I doing Mr. Coltrane an injustice by leaving him out? I don't think so. If he is an artist that Rock listeners can *easily* get into, good...I'll have to check him out. But *my* list was the first stuff that popped into my head....and it's exactly the same stuff that broke me free from a steady diet of Metal.

IF...you read my whole post, you'd have read:

    |Well, that's basically how wet my feet have been and still are with respect to |Jazz and Jazz Guitar. If you grow to really dig that stuff, maybe more |traditional Jazz is also in your liking. I've found it to really be an acquired |taste for Rock-oriented listeners to get into. Give it time, and maybe you'll |have opened a whole new door of musical enjoyment for yourself.

See, it says it's a way to "get [your] feet wet". Read it again to make sure you have it straight. I did NOT say drenched, or drowned, or inundated, or any other synonym. Hey, if someone's first listening of Coltrane doesn't make him or her feel overloaded with a Jazz experience, great. But see, I didn't list him because he's not one of the guys who broke me free from Metal. Same thing for Miles, and Monk, and Mingus, and Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespy. I listed the stuff *I* am directly acquainted with, and I included a couple of comments on guys I'd heard were cool who also fit into the Fusion category.

IF...you read my whole post, you'd have noticed that the guys I listed are for the most part....Fusion players. I don't consider Fusion to be Jazz necessarily, but it's a good place to start getting into Jazz.

    >last time i checked, i had a passion for hard rock, too. rich audet has made >out to be some sort of moron. i KNOW you said jazz for the jammer. which is why >i felt coltrane and miles should be on there, too. what, they're not ROCKIN >enough?

I didn't want to have to say it, but.....

    You're being a dick (tm).

Instead of *supplementing* my post, which focused on Fusion players, and added something like, "Hey, here are a couple of other guys who *I* really dig too. Their names are Miles Davis, and John Coltrane....." you had to be a dick about it and start ripping into me as though I'd committed some sort of heinous crime for omitting those names. In case you didn't read the first couple of sentences in this post, the reason they were omitted is up there. Re-read if necessary.

Let's suppose someone had asked about...say.....Classical music that a DT fan might like. Then, suppose I thought I'd try to help by making some positive comments on...say.... Mozart and Beethoven. Are you gonna slash me with "Hey moron, I think there were some big daddy Classical guys called...umm... Bach and Vivaldi and Monteverdi!!! Why did you leave them out????" You see what you're doing here? That's right.....

You're being a dick. The key is to be *constructive* about it.

    >do they not have the fine hair dt has?? gimme a break! at least one other >jammer wasn't subservient to the metheny bullshit- he mentioned coltrane too. >his name is charlie harrison, and his nickname is HARD ROCK!!!!!!! >ARRRRRRRRRRGH! btw, thank you charlie.

Yes, and he mentioned Coltrane in a supportive way. You should take a lesson from him in posting etiquette.

    >so basically, i am NOT understanding my wrong in the post. why can't the bid >daddys be labeled "jazz for the dt listener"? last time i checked, i still >really liked dt.........

You must certainly consider yourself fortunate. I really wish I could just pick up any album by any artist (Jazz in particular) and really dig it with little effort. I, however, posted from my personal experience with getting into Jazz (or Fusion, for that matter). I apologize if I seemed to be generalizing, as I obviously omitted someone like yourself by not listing YOUR favorite Jazz artists.

    >prog fans should be able to dig them, too. not just miles. coltrane's got >some nasty NASTY harmonies. like i had claimed, his soloing is what in part >leaves us guitarists like jp, vai, satch, vernon reid, marty friedman- >whether they know it or not. and even di meola and mentheny will say that, >too.

See, *that's* the right way to do it. You just said some positive things about Jazz guys you really dig, without bashing on me for being so ingorant by leaving them out. It's a *supplemental* post, not an insulting one.

    >so i will not accept the excuse that the prog metal fans will have a >hard time listening to it. nope, sorry.

Well, again, you're fortunate to have such a flexible ear. In my experience, Metal fans and the like need to be broken in to Jazz slowly and easily. If you've been reading any of the posts about Jammers trying to get their girlfriends to dig Dream Theater, you'd have noticed that some of them are having trouble, and many of the recommended solutions are to "break them in slowly".....which, again, is the whole point behind my original post. But from the sound of things, you probably didn't read those posts either.

    Have a musically eclectic day.

Yes, a lot of people want to make their post on digest 2112. I don't. I wanna make my post on the one before it :)

I can't remember who said this, but it doesn't matter who did, good point:

    >I've said it a billion times and I'll say it again, get some damn earplugs. >People worry about wearing them, think that if they're not manly or >something if they do, but that's just plain stupid. I had those squishy ones >in at this show, and with the exception of the bass drum slamming my chest, >the sound was great. I could actually HEAR everything clearly, even the >words to the songs. >Once again, ear plugs do not muffle the sound, they just turn it down to a safe, comfortable level, and actually make everything a lot clearer.

Hallelujah. The only person that I know of that has their sound turned down is Steve Howe of Yes (goddamn, I talk about these guys too much on here, and so people tell me on #ytsejam as well ;)), he said in a recent interview on Notes From The Edge (the best Yes mailing list) that he only runs 60 watts on stage. He does that so he can comfortably play on stage without earplugs. But there have been times before when Steve has had to play louder, and he did wear earplugs. I believe that was back when he was in Asia, and John Wetton had hearing problems (his hearing condition has been less severe lately, I guess).

    moving on...

Partha with the kick ass last name (Mukhopadhyay) said stuff like:

    >saw a story about all the bx sets coming out in time for christmas season, >and there was one for "the progressive era of rock and roll" or something >like that.......said it limited bands to only two songs, tops, so yes and >elp were underrepresented....and wasted space on some other bands i'd >never heard of.....then it said it also included the moody >blues.....wha??? sure, they got the orchestration stuff happening, but >are they really considered prog? > >and, has anyone plunked down the $60 to get this, or heard any of it? I >ain't gonna be buying it, but I'd love to know if whoever put it out did a >good jonb representing prog......

Mr. Overposter, Carlos Alfaro asked: > Whos featured on it!!?!?!?

Umm, go to this page, there's a review and a tracklisting of the Supernatural Fairy Tales box set there.

Ok, I'm done, and if this post makes it into digest 2112, I'll be pissed....not. :)

    Hey all,

Just got back from Birch HELL. You got it. It lived up to it's nickname!!.

First of all, let me start with the fact that quite a few things effected this evening negatively for me. I got some very bad news as I was leaving for TGIF, ended up at the WRONG TGIF in Old Bridge on route 9, and my friend ended up getting extremely ill (not on drugs or alcohol, just sick) after we parked in the Birich Hill parking Lot. I ended up driving her back to her house, and borrowing her car to get back to see the show. Unfortunately, the band went on at 11, not midnight, as I thought, and I missed half of the set. Not to mention that that place SUCKED. It was so packed that to move around in ANY direction you literally HAD to push people out of your way. I am short too, so I did not get to see anything more than a brief peek through shoulders.

As for the show, it was a good show. Even though the crowd was horribly large, they were into the show (a LOT of people around me shouted "please don't go"). I think I know why there were so many people there though. As I was coming in, the bouncer at the door was telling ticketless people that they could get in through the bar, and where I ended up was where I think the door that led to the bar was, and people were going in and out.

All in all, I was probably spoiled by Poughkipsie, and this show will end up being a memorable event in it's own right. I would have liked to have SEEN a little, but I guess it could have been worse, I could have been stuck home with four tickets. I DID get to use 1!!! Now I can look forward to RUSH On Sunday Night (and JAM 2112 on the same day. Coincidence; I think NOT!!).

    OK, Mads.

Here's my total belief. In my frustration, yes, I bash on guitarists. But I truely feel that we all have a space in rock. Keyboards can be rhythm instrument or lead instruments, and we can do bass sounds as well. I am not only referring to the new keyboards that just try to imitate already existing sounds. I am referring to the old style synths where you created your sounds yourself. A piano didn't come as a patch on a keyboard, you had to build it, and it didn't sound like piano when you were done. I've listened to a lot of rock music growing up and I think that the music sounds fuller when there's a keyboard in the mix. I also think that what DT does and what a lot of prog bands do with letting the keyboard have its time in the sun with the guitar is wonderful. Yes, I bitch too much. Yes, I live in a bad area, and yes, I have dealt with the wrong people and the wrong attitudes. Maybe I am losing face with the Ytsejam. Truthfully, I am too tired right now to try to defend statements. All I can say, if I totally break down here, is that I want my chance, too. I have written music, I even played solo to a crowd. I wasn't accepted. It discouraged me enough to not want to do the solo thing anymore. Now, granted, i followed two punk bands, so of course they're not going to accept one guy on two synths playing to sequencers, playing progressive music and singing as opposed to screaming, lyrics that might actually take some concentration. Maybe I should try again, but I don't want to play with a computer anymore. There's no substitute for a real bassist, guitarist, and drummer. Maybe I am blaming people for the wrong things. maybe it comes down to more of how peoople look at me, as opposed to keyboardists altogether. I guess that's my problem alone. I do have to get people used to a visual disability, and there are a lot of closed-minded humans out there who don't want anything to do with the handicapped, regardless of how good he or she is on an instrument. That's my deal, and I should argue that on another list. But, I have gotten the impression from just listening and watching how keyboardists are regarded. Most modern bands use session keyboardists on their CDs, but don't have a keyboard player. That's not where the music is. I've seen a lot of local bands and even some semi-pro bands that bury the keyboard player in the mix or never let the guy take a solo. I can't understand why. maybe it's the individual guitar player's fear of being overshadowed. Maybe I am generalizing too much. maybe ia m wrong.

Am I conceding defeat? Yeah, but only to a degree. I want to carry this discussion on on a better level, if that is possible. Yeah, I've let my stress control my fingers, and I have made myself sound like a fool. And for that I appologize, but I want you all to look at the situation it comes from. I've made a lot of generalizations that I probably shouldn't have made. I understand that there are a lot of msuicians who are out ther that would accept keyboardists, and on a more personal note, ime, into their bands. they're just not in NJ. So far. I haven't found them yet.

Oh, shit, am I rambling again?

having me and Bafu kicked off the list? What did we violate the prime directive or something? I think if it came to a vote, I don't think there would be too many would opt for our dismissal. On this, I am sure me and Bafu would actually agree.
