Can't we all just get along? OK, it's the time for watching It's a
Wonderful Life and eating cookies and making love not war and getting
drunk on punch. Let's just love one another.
But seriously, guys!!!! Enough is enough. Can we flame privately at
least so we don't take up more jams with this bitching and chastising?
We're all cool people, but we're also so damned defensive. I mean, trendy
anger at the world through being a musician is one thing, but we all are
so similar. It'd be so mucheasier if we all just--just--I don't
know--shut up? Be well and happy holidays.

You're right about Hammonds and organs - the problem was by that time, the
guitar was already firmly entreched, and people were still doing new, creative
things with it. My guess is that if keyboards came out for the first time right
now in this era of shitty, cliched guitar playing passing for genius, they would
have a good shot at being very popular. It's a case of bad timing. Nobody wanted
to listen to a keyboard when they could hear people like Hendrix and Page
developing the electric guitar sound that we've all come to know and love. ;-)

Hey everybody. Just writing to say that I received my Christmas present.
It is hilarious. Neil's name gets mentioned 3 times! I guess I didn't
realize he was that important... hehehe. But anyway, are you going to let
us know if our subscription is about to run out? I'm not sure if mine is
or not, but I just want to make sure that I don't miss out on anything.

Damon! settle down. I realize that you have to answer everything
individually, but 10 posts in one jam?!? give us all a break. This is a
little harsh, but I did rather enjoy the jam while you were away.

On a lighter note, where could one find the number of albums sold by DT?
I'm planning on buying WDADU for my brother, so I've done my share. :Þ
    (thanx Mark)

I did that "fill up your gas tank til $21.12" thing one time, but then the
chick at the register gave me the "ah the classic overfill" look. I still
got a chuckle out of it.

If Derek's playing is anything like his sense of humor, this is gonna be
    one BA album!

Myung even talked a little bit!

ok, everyone shut the hell up about this crap now and listen.

i played piano for about 3 years, and after giving up music for a
while, switched to guitar, which i've been playing for almost 8 years.
i have since switched almost exclusively to the Warr Guitar in the
    last 4 months.

the guitar and the piano (& keyboards) are instruments that are easy
to fake and hard to master. they require very different techniques,
and IMO are very complimentary to eachother.

as with any instrument, there are going to be players with different
levels and different kinds of training. there are always going to be
people who pick up the guitar, say, to form a punk band, and that
could be the extent of their ability. same with a someone who buys a
synth and a sequencer to make some techno.

there are also always going to be people who fall in love with an
instrument and strive for mastery of it... as i have experienced with
the Warr guitar. as each member of DT has with their own instrument.
the desire for mastery almost automatically entails training,
    practice, and education.

what i have learned with the warr guitar (an evolution of the chapman
stick, for those of you who may know about that) is that every
instrument has its own unique identity. i could easily play basslines
and guitar parts simultaneously with the warr guitar (or with a
chapman stick), but as our own Sean Malone has said once, the critical
moment is when you realize that on a stick, you don't play guitar and
    bass lines, you play stick-lines.

my point? every single fucking instrument in existance has its own
merits and drawbacks. and every single person in the world is
different. my girlfriend can play her clarinet or flute and make it
sound beautiful, and i can't even get a single note out of them.

i found that my piano and guitar experience are both extremely
beneficial for learning my new instrument, but ultimately the
uniqueness of the instrument is drawing towards a uniqueness in style
    and technique.

so quit fucking arguing about which instrument's better. quit fucking
arguing about what percentage of guitarists can read music and which
percentage of keyboardists only use one hand. that is solely the
choice of the individual, and it has nothing to do with the instrument
    itself.

hell, we're all dream theater fans, right? do you think they ought to
dump JP and DS just because most guitarists and keyboardists willl
never reach the level of mastery that the boys in the band have?

you're wasting your time and guess what... you're both wrong!

    Ok Folks,

I know that this is the last minute and all, but I have just been made aware
of the fact that I have a pair of tickets available for BOTH TONIGHT'S DT
show at BH, AND for tomorrow's RUSH show at the Meadowlands. Actually my
brother has the extra RUSH tix. If anyone was planning on getting their tix
at the door tonight, or had no plans to go, go to TGIF tonight, I will be
there, or write me back. I will check my mail as late as 6:00.

If you are interested in the RUSH tix, write me back with your phone # and I
    will call you.

Just a couple of other things while I am here:

Got the Fan Club CD, Real cool, For all who are responsible, thanks!!

Interesting how the number of JAMS has increased in the last week at the SAME
RATE as the number of posts I skip. Coincidence; I think NOT! << I had a LOT
written after this comment, but it was TOO inflamatory to send (self
editting, something a few of you can learn from...;), but If things continue,
I think I MAY let it go. Stay Tuned...>>

To the person who thought it was cool to point out a flaw in the Poughkipsie
show: shame on you!!! That show was excellent, as perfect as most shows can
get. I defy you to find ANY live performance that does not have SOME flaw.
I heard it too, but my God, it lasted for about 7 seconds, and they got it
together with little or no effort. Give em a break!!! I think a perfect
show is when you CAN overlook any flaws in the performance because there were
so few, and they are not TOO noticeable.

I hope to meet some of you at TGIF's & BH tonight,

    L8R,
    Brian

jazz for the ytsejammer....why isn't coltrane one of them. last time i
checked, i had a passion for hard rock, too. rich audet has made out to be
some sort of moron. i KNOW you said jazz for the jammer. which is why i felt
coltrane and miles should be on there, too. what, they're not ROCKIN enough?
do they not have the fine hair dt has?? gimme a break! at least one other
jammer wasn't subservient to the metheny bullshit- he mentioned coltrane too.
his name is charlie harrison, and his nickname is HARD ROCK!!!!!!!
    ARRRRRRRRRRGH! btw, thank you charlie.

so basically, i am NOT understanding my wrong in the post. why can't the bid
daddys be labeled "jazz for the dt listener"? last time i checked, i still
    really liked dt.........

as for damon, who seemed to be more reasonable........
prog fans should be able to dig them, too. not just miles. coltrane's got
some nasty NASTY harmonies. like i had claimed, his soloing is what in part
leaves us guitarists like jp, vai, satch, vernon reid, marty friedman-
whether they know it or not. and even di meola and mentheny will say that,
too. so i will not accept the excuse that the prog metal fans will have a
hard time listening to it. nope, sorry. if someone REALLY had a problem with
it, i'd tell them to go listen to dave brubeck, but that's besides the point.

you hear that rick?? remember, i wrote "as for jazz every ytsejammer should
know". i'm assuming each ytsejammer is also a dt listener. if you wanted to
drown the jam with the names of the essential jazzers, GO AHEAD!

i said what i said, and i don't plan to regret it.
    whatever,

    the ytsegoon.

    Just thought I should share.

A few lingering thoughts from Providence before the expected deluge of NJ
    posts is sure to hit.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    POSITIVES

New material. Very exciting. The kind of stuff that gets one to think "I
want to hear that song again, and NOW". For me, "Peruvian Skies" and
"Lines in the Sand" seem to be the standouts. I really hope that they dont
let a producer water these songs down on the CD.

Old material. I knew the setlist in advance but it is still great to hear
Killing Hand and Ytsejam. And, if they play Learning to Live at every
future show I see, it wont be enough.

Strand Theater. What a great place to see a show. Not a bad seat in the
place. And, when the doors are to open at 8:00, they open at 8:00.

No drum solo. Mike is great and has absolutely nothing to prove to
anybody. Thankfully, I think that he now realizes this. His drumming is
so much more interesting in the context of their music.

Christmas Present. I know that this has nothing to do with the show but I
remain quite impressed that they would put this out. THANKS !! I hope
    Warren T. Asshole got his.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    NEUTRALS

"Lets meet at the Trinity Pub". Fine. Call me a fool (and you would
hardly be the first) but I think that I saw nary a jammer at this here
establishment. Maybe a bit too upscale, maybe a bit too crowded but nobody
    ?? Lucky they sold beer.......

Beth Hart (Heart ??) Band. So hearing them bumped Metropolis (ugh.... that
did hurt in a major way). But, for an opening band they were OK. My
opinion is that people are too critical about opening bands. If they were
great, they would be headlining, right ?? Give them a chance. At least
the singer seemed enthusiastic about the performance. And, I think that
they are better than others have given them credit for in previous jams.
Does anyone have their disk ??

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    NEGATIVES

Only one = the sound. Note: If Big Brother is indeed "watching", hopef
ully this will be taken as constructive criticism. To set the table, here
are a few quotes from previous jams:

    >> The bass in the mix might actually have been too high,

      An understatement.

    >> I tried so hard to listen to the lyrics, but I just couldn't make most
    of them out.

If you are James, wouldn't you be upset by this ??

    >> We got lost on the way back too, but that's because no one in the car
    could hear.

Actually, this doesn't make too much sense. But it added fuel to the
    fire.

In the (very) old days, it used to be kind of a question of manhood as to
how loud a band could play, damn the quality. I remember bands like
Mahogany Rush that would bring immediate pain to one's ears and I imagine,
long term damage. Well, I know so. I also know that I can buy ear plugs
and quit being a wuss but I am talking more about quality and not quantity.
Loud is great but why kill the sound of the great musicianship of DT ??

DT's mix is indeed normally bottom heavy, and that's probably life but it
would be nice if they toned it down a bit. But more importantly the sound
was simply too loud, at least for the sound system that was there. The
worst part (and I was right next to the soundboard so there are no excuses)
was when James would try some of those high wails. Those screeches were
soooo nasty. They sounded out of tune and the breakup was insane. I
remain very supportive of James and I really think that this was the fault
of the sound system/volume level and not James' fault but Jesus, I thought
that my skin would curl on each one. If you cant play loud cleanly, then
please turn it down until the sound IS clean.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

And not to end on a negative note, let me say this was really a great show.
Truth be told, we dont know how lucky we have things right now.

..And Now For The Next in A Multitude of Reviews,

Yes the Providence show kicked my ass to the point where I was partially
deaf in one ear the next day and I messed up my Western Civilization final
because I didn't study enough but I regret NOTHING!

Well anyway, I'm not going to repeat what they played because it has been
posted so uch that even those who didn't get a chance to go probably feel
like they were there, sort of, don't worry guys I'm sure that the boys are
going to make it up to you guys big time. And yes it did suck that they
didn't play, but I'm not going to use that as an excuse to make fun of the
opening bands. Both Einstein and the Beth Hart Band actually had pretty cool
sets which I enjoyed because I would think that DT would ask some
progressive band to open for them like they did with FW, but it was cool for
me to hear new and different acts and I actually liked them, although the
Beth Hart Band took me by surprise. And she asked the crowd if they wouldn't
mind hearing a blues song not a jazz song like someone else said. And it was
a blues song full of emotion. Here's the kicker though. During BHB's set
everyone kept looking up at the balcony. I looked up and saw a camera person
and I'm like " so what ", then I look up again and there's DT waving at
everybody and listening to the opening band. I thought that was pretty cool
    of them.

Well enough about that because DT blew both of the bands away, which I was
expecting. The Mirror/Lie kicked ass like usual as did the new Caught in A
Web. I never got a chance to see DT before this because of one reason or
another, but I'm glad I finally did because it was a concert experience I'll
never forget. Also I was on JP's side of the stage and I was close enough
that I got a good look at where his fingers were going and I was trying to
see if he was playing certain songs like they were transcribed in magazines.
Its just a weird guitar player thing. I thought everybody's solos kicked
major ass too. I've honestly never saw such a huge drum kit in my life, it
scared the living shit out of me, it was so huge. But anyway, I couldn't
hear JM as well as the others, maybe I had to be on his side of the stage
but from what I did hear of him he was really cool, and I was surprised at
how cool Derek's solos were, because of some of the negative things I read
here on the jam, and he had these cool emotional facial expressions when he
soloed, maybe it was the tightness of the leather he was wearing. Finally,
yes JL ruled so much because I didn't know he could pull of such stuff live,
but his voice was in perfect shape and he was very communicative with the
crowd and interacted with them a lot which I always think is cool. Well
enough of my ranting. For those of you who couldn't go, trust me you'll be
blown away by the new album. Peruvian Skies is a personal favorite. Bye.

for those who are interested in the prog side of jazz
(or the jazz side of prog)
check out National Health or Soft Machine.
I have only been able to find NH's 'Missing Pieces,'
which is stuff that didn't make it to their albums,
but that stuff is still pretty sick.
the Softs' 'Third' is generally regarded as a good place to start.
and they should be a bit easier to find than NH.

and for more McLaughlin, try Mahavishnu Orchestra
(which only employs an orchestra on 'Apocalypse,' I believe...)
start with 'Apocalypse' or 'the Inner Mounting Flame'

    happy hunting!

Guys, why do people scream "please don't go" during that section of ACOS?
Also, fuck yeah!!! I just made it to the first fret with J P's
stretches without hurting my hand. Raw flexibility, that's me.
