I am sorry if this has been discussed before,as I was off the
list for a long amount of time before I resubscribed, but I didn't
understand the joke Bafu made about Derek being a "homo".Is he really a
homosexual? Is it a rumor, or is it some kind of inside joke? I am not
a bigot of any kind, I was just sort of suprised by Bafu's statement.
BTW, if he in fact is, it's pretty cruel to dog him because of it.

Hey, no need to bash on guitar so much. Granted, keyboardist are almost
always better musicians but that is no reason to call guitarists losers. Its
alot harder to play complex music on a guitar than on piano. I know this is
no excuse for most guitarists sucking so much but its still true. Most
guitarists never have to learn to read music... this is a big problem. Most
just learn some cords and play some crappy songs. If more learned to read
music and to play the notes on the guitar (another thing most can'r do) you
would change your tune. I have been playing guitar for almost four years and
I am no musical god. I know more about music than most guitarists because I
have taken the time to learn it. I know you are witout a dout a better
musician but I am still learning. Give guitar a chance... mabie we'll learn.

The first song on Weather Report's _Heavy Weather_ album has some of the
most interesting sounds I've ever heard come out of an ACOUSTIC piano.
The liner notes say it has something to do with the ways the pedals are
used. Thought I saw it in your gratutious list once, Adam? Perhaps you
can expand on this...

I hear you, however... While composition is ultimately the most important
aspect of the music, my argument concerning guitar and keyboards was a very
specific one relating to style, technique, and EXPRESSIVENESS of the
particular instrument. So, all thoughts of composition aside, my point was
that a guitar inherently provides more vehicles for individual expression than
a keyboard. That is my opinion.
Also, I certainly pay attention to MORE than just the composition when I
listen to DT... It's hard to suppress my excitement while listening to the
way JP slides into those slow melody notes (the silent man part) in
Erotomania, or the perfectly clean execution of the really fast-picked wah
part in the Voices solo, etc.. These guys shred, and do it with STYLE, and
that just adds so much to a finely composed piece of music.

Here's what i kinda know concerning the Birch Hill - nothing
spectacular....
1) First off, the Birch Hill is on Route 9 South in
Old Bridge (for whoever asked). If you pass the
wonderful Fantazia Diner (I had to put that in there), you went
too far.
2.) I know that one of the opening bands on Saturday
is a band called "Einstein". What kind of music it is, and
if they're any good - I have no friggin' clue.....

Heya all you tasteful Jammers
I'm new to the list, and have been lurking for the last week or so, waiting for something besides directions to Birch Hill and how the concerts are going, to be posted on the list....and then somebody started flailing "keyboardists rule, guitarists suck". No no, don't go 'n say "That's not what I posted! You're twisting my words!" Cuz that's the jist of the whole statement, and WE ALL KNOW IT! Besides...who would post such a stupid note for any reason other than to git conversashun rollin', eh? ;) So here we go... ..you guys are comparing the proverbial "apples and oranges" again. Guitar is one instrument, keyboard is another. Both can use effects. Both can be played by anybody (except, of course, quadrapaledrics). Both instruments have thier own heroes (like DT's Petrucci and Sherinian/Moore) and abuseres (like Smashing Pumpkins and NIN--disclaimer: I hate NIN and Smashing Pumpkins, so sue me!).
But here are some reasons why you can't compare the two:
The finger actions/movements are different. I'm sure Derek and Kev could play anything remotely resembling a keyboard, but could they just pick up a guitar and start wailing on it like they do on a keyboard? I think not.
One is more wieldy than the other. If the guitarist can't play stuff that's as intricate as the piano parts (which is b.s., 'cuz music is music, and there's ALWAYS a way to transcribe it to other instruments), at least he can jump around and kill somebody by brutally chop somebody's head off with the geetar. What's a keyboardist gonna do? Hit somebody over the head? There's no blood to that. >:)
Most importantly: they sound different! OMIGOSH! A keyboard doesn't sound like a genuine guitar, and a guitar doesn't sound l ike a genuine keyboard, no matter how many effects you throw on those puppies.
My point is that guitar can be just as expressive an instrument as piano. If you can be moved by some of the great piano concertos,and not be moved by some great classical or rock guitar, somethin's rong wit ya.
It's all about music. You know, that stuff we like to listen to. ;)
Just think of a world w/o music... ..there'd be a lot of John Tesh's running around....

I've been trying to figure out where I could get a mold for something like this made, and I figure it may cost a bit. Hey, Galactic Cowboys are on Metal Blade, and from what I've read in interviews, they've had a pretty decent relationship with the label (compared with their relationship they had with Geffen, anyway). I'm not defending the label or anything, just noting another quality act they have (whether or not they're getting screwed, I don't know). Speaking of Metal Blade, if anyone wants to try out Tourniquet, and plan on getting Pathogenic, I'd recommend the Metal Blade release since it has an extra track (a live studio cover of Trouble's "The Tempter").

Just a quick, one, two, three....
1. Jason Hartman - BH is on Rt9 south. Coming up from Baltimore, you gotta go past BH and hit the next jughandle (NJ left turn :D ) at Texas Road.
2. Proper Ground - If you want to work on equipment and you don't have a groundstrap, you could still properly ground yourself. You can do this by leaving the unit plugged in (but not turned on!) and touching the the metal part of the chassis with your hand to discharge static. Don't touch electralytic capacitors, eventhough they are small, some of them will dump you on your butt. Why do you leave it plugged in? Well most equipment will provide a connection to earth ground through the power cord (the third prong) and then tie that to the chassis.

Saw Rush yesterday. What an intense show. I don't want to waste time and space with a detailed review, but I did send one to the NMS, Rush's mailing list, so check it out there or mail me if you want to know the full story. :)
Cool thing: I met Paul Cashman while buying T-shirts and he mentioned that he was going to see Dream Theater the next day. I looked at him and said, "Birch Hill?" He looked at me and said, "Yeah. Are you on the net?" That quick, we had zeroed in on our shared interests and introduced ourselves as fellow Ytsejammers. Kind of cool. Paul, I wish I'd had time to talk more, but the show was starting soon!
So, Paul and everybody else who went to Birch Hill, how'd the show go? Being packed in like sardines might not have been fun, but I bet the music was worth it.
Re: the keyboards vs. guitars thing: Let's stop being ridiculous. I happen to greatly admire people who use keyboards as their primary instrument (Jonn Serrie, Yanni, David Arkenstone, Enya, Michael Gettel, Jonas Kvarnstrom/Stefan Schramm), but I *also* think that guitars are extraordinarily expressive and beautiful-sounding instruments. A large section of my CD collection is devoted solely to instrumental guitar work a la Malmsteen, MacAlpine, Becker, Hoey, Morse, Vai, and of course Satriani, as well as many others.
So, to sum up: Keyboards are great. Guitars are great. In some styles of music, one is mutually exclusive of the other -- keyboards don't fit well in a Pantera song, usually. In other styles of music, you can have keyboards with no guitars around (check out any Glass Hammer album for a perfect example, though GH does have some songs with guitars in them as well). Let's drop the "one is better" thread. Fact is, there's always going to be people who idolize one and hate the other. I happen to think they're limiting themselves way too much, but that's their business.
