    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Just a few thoughts about some cds...

Savatage's "From the Gutter to the Stage" has everything you could possibly
want from a Sava collection. There's only one gripe I have with it. The cd
has "When the Crowds Are Gone" in it, "Believe" is there as well, but where
is the ending of this trilogy, "Alone You Breathe"? The four extra songs on
the bonus CD alone make this CD worthwhile. "DT Jesus" leaves the listener
in complete awe. All because of Jon's vocals. Which of course is something I
have never ever ranted about before. :) Now if Savatage only would release
the tracks that were left out from "Streets"...

Angra's "Freedom Call" EP is sort of a collection of remakes and old songs
that are already familiar to Angra fans. It includes only one totally new
song, namely the title track "Freedom Call". The there's a remixed version of
"Painkiller" that appeared on Judas Priest tribute vol. II (I heard no
difference to the tribute version, though), an amazing orchestrated version
of "Stand Away", a previously unreleased song (which was on their 1992 demo)
"Reaching Horizons", "Queen of the Night", which has appeared as a bonus track
on the Japanese version of "Holy Land" and an edited version of "Deep Blue".
This is a great disc like everything Angra has ever done before, but it isn't
the best place to start listening to their material.

Helloween's "High Live" has to be the most embarrassing thing this once so
glorious band has ever scraped together. I mean, I've been on their gigs almost
every time they've visited Finland and every time they have sounded
ok at the least, awesome on their best nights. I can't think of any reason
why they chose these gigs (in Italy and Spain) to record their double live
cd. I reckon I'm not that far off the target if I guess that this record was
either forced by the record company or Helloween is only around for the money
anymore. I mean, on this disk vocalist Andi Deris is bad you wouldn't believe
it. He couldn't carry a tune if it came in a bag to him! If you're considering
to purchase this CD, at least take a listen to "Perfect Gentleman" on disc 2.
This one is strictly for the fans. And even they will be in for a BAD
disappointment. I stick to my Michael Kiske CD, thank you. "High Live" is
the worst cd I've bought this year. And I'm a Helloween fan...

Moonspell's "Irreligious" gets my vote for the best goth metal CD this year.
It has it all. Fairly simple melodies, catchy riffs, a singer with such a
pathos you haven't heard it since Messiah Marcolin of Candlemass, just a
bit faulty English pronunciation, enough to make it sound very exotic (the
band is from Portugal) and good song structures. I think this band may be
the best thing I've found this year. And, I've already seen them twice live.
IMO, they were even better than Type O Negative on their gig here some time
    ago.

    Yo Vince dude...

I can't remember where I'd heard it, but I believe FF use a drum
machine on record & then the drummer works towards the parts for live
performances... sorry if I'm wrong... I've only heard their stuff at
Donington this year & although impressed by their drummer's ability,
I did find it rather tiresome to listen to... Someone had told me
that the singer was "better" than Geoff Tate... obviously we have
differing views about the meaning of the word "better"...

Anyway, anyone else know if FF use a drum machine in recording? I
thought DT did for I&W until I saw them live...

            Hi all!

I'm still working through all that e-mail that was sitting there
when I got back from my honeymoon, and is STILL sitting there largely in
part of my ISP crashing every half hour and being unconnectable 90% of the
time. It'll get taken care of, thanks everyone for their patience.

My friend Brandon really needs money or his car's gonna get
reposessed or something like that. He's having me auction off his original
Subconscious (#009 or something like that) and Acoustic Dreams (#290) for
him. The opening bids are $75 each. Let me know if you're interested.

ALL LOCALS: This is especially for those of you who are college
students, and for anyone who thinks they can handle working with an
expanding company with some pretty high-tech products. My company is
experiencing unbelievable growth right now, and we don't have enough
people to handle the incredible expansion. My supervisor, Jason Walker, is
really riding me hard to find some people to join the company. The pay
scale is performance-based, and it's pretty darned generous (or else I
wouldn't be with this company). The company, Equinox, came in #1 on the
Inc 500 of 1996, with 35,000% growth rate.. .that should give you an idea
of the dilemma I'm in. Most companies are downsizing or laying off people,
and it's pretty cool to be headed in the opposite direction. Anyway, I
digress. The company trains its own people, so you basically just need to
have graduated high school to have a chance at getting in. You also have
to be 18 or older, obviously. I know what it's like to be in college and
need extra money... we need full-time _and_ part-time people. Long story
short, we need PEOPLE. Companies don't accept applicants like this every
day... those of you in the job market know this. If you're not working a
very plush job right now, you should probably try joining my company.
Contact me via e-mail or call me (business line 602-892-4761) and I'll set
you up an interview. This won't last long... we expect our needs for more
help to be filled in pretty short order. Let me know OK?

I know this was majorly NDTC, but if I can help some local Jammers
get into a decent career, then they can go to more concerts, and buy more
CDs, which is better for the band in the long run anyway, wouldn't you all
    agree? :)

            Take it easy everyone...

Does this disc have everything, sound and visual? Is this the one with the
never-before-seen video clips of Myung screaming and jumping around?
Petrucci making mistakes? Derek saying "I'm a homo" to the audience?
LaBrie pummeling someone into oblivion for shouting over his lines?
Portnoy playing the timpanis with turkey drumsticks WHILE EATING the
drumsticks? Those were the highlights of the evening, man. If it doesn't
    have those clips, forget it.

(reponse assumes you have a floating-tremolo guitar, otherwise skip me)

Okay, Jeff, I'm not sure what other people have said because I'm not caught up with all the 'jams just yet, but if you want to really fatten up the gauges of your strings and NOT screw up your tremolo, you might want to think about leaving the high string, B or E or whatever, completely off the guitar. The deep chords will sound like a seven-string, and yet it will be a five-string. You will surely be proclaimed emperor. I'm suggesting this because making all the strings heavier AND adding a super-fat .56 gauge on the bottom will really overload the springs in your guitar. Clip the high-E and leave it off, things will balance out a bit better.

By the way, are there any shirts on this tour? Any hats? What does the merchandise look like?

I said to myself when this stupid discission started, i will NOT get mixed. But since I have something nobody mentioned yet, I tought, I will mail it anyway. Nevans said that you can control a guitar much better than a piano or keyboard, because it's an instrument where you touch the strings. I don't think that is really important here: i mean: when i listen to dream theater, it's not the fine touch or the difficult technique which impresses me. Yes, you can create much effects on a guitar, but it are not the effects who make this music so great. Neither the fact that Petrucci controls so many different techniques which create each their unique sound. No, it is the COMPOSITION of the music which makes music. The flow of notes and chords is (in prog) more important than the details like the way someone hits the string. IMO, there are 3 main things in songs: harmony, melody and sound. The result of a great song is thanks to those components, not to the other details.

Hi. Your least favourite YtsePolice here again...

There's been some fuzz about a virus called "Penpal Greetings" all over the Internet lately. Now, since it hasn't been mentioned here on the 'jam just yet AND it's not really anything worth mentioning, I think I'll take the first step.

The rumour has all the same ingredients that the recent fuzz about "Good Times"-virus had, about how the virus includes a Trojan Horse that will destroy your hard disk once you open a email message titled "Penpal Greetings" and how it will infest everyone who you have in your email address book and whatnot. This is all just shit. The virus detector I have (F-Prot) tells the following:

    >NAME: > Penpal greetings > > This is not a virus, but a widespread hoax, warning > about a dangerous e-mail message titled 'Penpal > greetings'. No such danger exists. > > This hoax is very similar to Good Times. See the > description of Good Times for more information.

So, if anyone mentions this "virus" here again, will be prosecuted for blatant wasting of bandwidth. :)

damn straight. everybody's been mentioning all the "keyboard legands"... i'm sorry, but guys like steve roach, robert rich, vidna obmana, and jean-michel jarre are infinitely mor creative and diverse than anyone that's been mentioned. i mean, i love kevin and all, but he doesn't touch these guys.

and yes, as an ambient musician myself, creating slowly shirfting atmospheres is *MUCH* harder than playing fast, technical stuff. i've done and do both, and i can promise you that the concenration, nuance, and emotion put into it is much more involved than playing a quick keys solo.

"void" not music? i beg to differ. it's just not normal music. regardless, you cannot argue that it's not a beautiful work of art.

if you're into roach, you should check out robert rich, vidna obmana, lightwave, and suspended memories. they will amaze and mesmerize you.

Their first album was not released in '92 in the US as I understand it. So I guess technically it's not a re-release, just a release. As far as getting the album (CD), according to Magna Carta's home page (www.zaks.com/magnacarta) the self titled Shadow Gallery is only available from Magna Carta by mail. Here's how it reads:

All titles (except "Shadow Gallery" which is available through mail order only) are available at progressive CD stores everywhere or send $15.98 for each CD to Magna Carta, 208 E. 51st Street, #1820, New York, NY 10022 Outside the USA, add $5 per CD. Payment should be sent in U.S. funds only.

I'm writing the check right now......

Saw I Mohter Earth last night. PRetty cool show, only the band played a really short set. There were maybe 100 people there tops (I guess Wed. nights aren't real good for concert goers). Anyway, if any of y'all were there, I apologise for not being as outgoing as I can be sometimes. I was feeling kinda sick, so I just kinda hung back and watched the band (I even sat for a while). I was the quiet guy with the gotee wearing the black Rush shirt and a hat most of the time and glasses. Anyway, it was a good show, all in all. Really cool percussion breaks in some of the tunes. If anyone was there, we'll hook up some other time, 'kay? Cheers.

You have "A Distant Thunder" (which is pretty damn good..their second best out of their 5 albums). "Nosferatu" (yes, Corbin plays his ass off and Rivera hits high notes all over the place but has an absolutely beautiful midrange too!) is the album after that one is one of the BEST cd's I have in my collection (about 400)..I cannot understand how ANYBODY cannot love this disc...musicianship is amazing..beautiful melodic riffs packed EVERYWHERE!!!! Guitars shredding left and right...instrumental of instrumentals! Amazingly intelligent lyrics about Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (most of the disc is a concept album!) ARGGGHHH..I must go listen to it now i'm so excited!

Bottom Line: FIND IT..no matter how..Kill if you must; for no one's lives shall be complete without this disc of beautiful music that fills the soul!!!

    > Metal Blade, huh? I made a pact with myself NEVER to buy another CD > released by Metal Blade. If anyone is ever in doubt about buying a Metal > Blade release, think about all the bands Mr. Slagel screwed over. Maybe > that's why he hasn't signed a decent new act in almost 10 years...no one > wants onto his label. You better believe that Ancient and Decoryah are > being butt-reamed by him right now...

You're gonna miss out on some great music then...MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND, FATES WARNING, ANACRUSIS, ATHEIST, CANDLEMASS, HELSTAR, HEXENHAUS, JAG PANZER, LETHAL, SAVAGE GRACE, THOUGHT INDUSTRY..etc. I can understand your disdain towards record companies that screw over bands but you are still helping them out if you buy their discs. Its just unfortunate that the guys in the offices get a take as well. Hell, after 12 years w/ FATES WARNING Joe DiBiase couldn't support his family..that's horrible. Jon Schaefer (of ICED EARTH) still lives in a rat-hole apartment in Florida next to Morrissound Studios but thats all he can afford! I have a stronger dislike for CENTURY MEDIA than for METAL BLADE simply for the fact that they'll promote the more accessible bands on their roster but don't make up a single promotional poster for NEVERMORE or ICED EARTH!

Oh well...thanks god for a PC and a modem or else I'd have no clue as to which new bands are coming out and who's touring where!!

    HELSTAR: "Nosferatu"...BUY IT!!!!!

cheers, Carlo (aka "Fates" aka "YtseSatan") -- _ __| |__ "When you know that your time is close at hand |__ __| maybe then you'll begin to understand | | Life down here is just a strange illusion." | | |_|
