            A few comments about BH:

                    Definitely a mind-blowing show.....man, between this
show, last year's BH show, and the DoE show at the Limelight,
I've lucked out by seeing them at their absolute best, as
            opposed to their normal best.

Sorry I didn't get to hang out that much (at all,
basically) at the pre-show. I guess I was just bitter that
it worked out better than last year's. Just kidding. Actually,
I got there kinda late....it was good to see Skadz and Paul C.
again (though they didn't recognize me) :P.....LadyDragon was
kewl ("at least they didn't kick *us* out *this* time" - great
introductory line! :P). Hi to everyone else, too who I waved to
in that fleeting moment outside. I even saw Mr. StoneFace from
last year's BH show - damn I forget your name - tall guy who
didn't smile once last year, but who was pretty kewl.....shit.

Anyway, enough rambling - to the point I was going to
make. Dream Theater *HAS* to play larger venues than the Birch
Hill. If the band is lurking and listening, play BIGGER PLACES.
The Birch Hill is OK and all, but god dammit, there were WAY
too many people there. They should definitely play places like
Roseland, Manhattan Center, and the Asbury Park Convention Hall.
I love DT, and would do anything to see them around this area
(NY/NJ), but it got to the point where I was almost thinking
about not coming to see them if they played BH again - and that's
BAD. A crowd like that just takes a lot away from the performance.
There were a few friends of mine that went to see them for the first
time, and they just came away with a great experience with
hearing DT live, but an average time in general due to the
            atmosphere.....definitely a shame.....PLAY BIGGER PLACES!~!!!!

            quick notes:

                    1) Don't think that Syrinx likes me, dunno why, but
he introduced himself, I smiled (think I said "Holy
Shit, that's kewl, whasup.."), and he just nodded...
Left me with a creepy feeling....

                    2) Heather - that hair is LOUD. you seemed like a
pisser - your demeanor / look on your face in the
dance club part of the BH was classic - the classic
"God I hate all you Guidos - die, die, die - I want
a drink, hell, my 8 drinks, so I can forget my being
                      in this club!" :)

                    3) Thanks to the two pricks who decided to crowd-surf
during Metropolis and kick my female friend in the
head - damn I wish I had steel-toes on so that your
                      noses would be no more....

                    4) Too bad Mike Bahr and Bafu weren't there - wasn't
                      the same without you guys.....

                    5) I may be crazy, but I thought Einstein was pretty
damn good - real good. Anyone know what label they're
                      on???

                    6) Hi to the dude who I talked to during the show - I guess
it was Howwee...he was pretty kewl, but either way,
you aren't correct about the TLF/Killing Hand thing...
Everyone makes mistakes - people shouldn't jump down
each other's throats for it tho....there's my morality
                      for the day.....

                    7) I know that I Mother Earth is not going to be like the
DT show - but I have a question - do you guys think that
the Steve Vai show is going to be just as packed??? If
it is, I don't think I'm going to bother going.....

                    8) "shit" in a song - it's ok...as long its not in the
title and repeated all the time - lighten up....

                                            Al

Hello all! I'm finally back at school where I have finally caught up on the jams I missed. Finals suck but hey, I saw DT. That makes everything better. The show, to say the least was interesting. Einstein was pretty cool. Some of the rhythms were cheesy, but when they got to the instrumental parts, man they kicked. They were so tight. The Beth Hart Band was cool. The singer, Beth Hart has a super strong voice. I think she puts Alanis <sp?> to shame, so does her band. My apologies to whomever digs A.Morrisette. This is just my opinion. Aside from the fact that waiting for DT to go on stage was absolute torture, and the fact that people were lighting up various carcinogens, AND the fact that some 6'8" tree stood right in front of me during the second band, the concert went well. They were a little too loud for my taste. DT was loud almost to the point where you could not register one thing from another. I had my earplugs in and they were still pretty garbled up. I even have those high-tech plugs with sonic filters for each frequency level (Hi's, mid's, low's) Just the fact that one of my favorite drum idols was going berzerk 20 feet from where I was standing was just a f**king trip. JP was ripping up the place with his playing. I thought it was a riot when JP went over to his cabinets which had a table setting with pate<sp>, red wine, caviar, etc, and started having a snack in the middle of a song. JL went over to help him out to finish the food. MP is a provicient spitter. I swear he spit on James' back. Derek was grooving behind his setup. He had on an older Ytsejam shirt! JM did not move from where he was standing. He played bass lines that most professional bassists can't even dream about, but did not move an inch. (Not even when that guy was rushed right past him to be beaten by the band's boucers!) It sucked that DT wasn't able to play an encore because of some stupid law. I was looking so forward to hearing DT's rendition of Cupid's Dead in the middle of Metropolis. DRAT!!! I wanted to go and possibly talk to Mike or at least to shake his hand after they finished the song, but one person in my party wasn't feeling well due to the amount of second-hand smoke she inhaled during the eight or so hours we were outside or inside the Strand. Most of you jammer's have already heard lots about the Strand show already so I will wish you a very happy and safe holiday season. See you maybe at the Vai show at the Strand with opening band Nuno (NDE?) Tony

I just noticed someone pinned up something about lead singer's image bring down a band. That could be true, but I don't think it was just their image which brought the band down. The record companies are very unloyal in most cases to their bands. Like A&M with Extreme. A&M told Nuno to write a whole album of 'More than Words' type songs. That's why Nuno was fed up with being grouped in with glam bands. A&M also did not support the last record at all. They planned to release singles then the company pulled them back saying that the songs were unmarketable. Bunchashit if you ask me. Mike Tramp did not bring White Lion down. They had legal problems with Atlantic. The record company put a clause of some sort in their contract when they signed in 1986. When '91 rolled around Atlantic said that the band had to break up because they "owed people this money and that money". They were desperate to sign with a company in '86 because they got dumped by elektra in'85. White Lion was '80's commercial rock, but the musicianship was outstanding. Like I tell my friends which rag on the music I listen to, I listen for the music, not the image. Vito kicks ass, James kicks ass, Greg kicks ass, and Mike, well he's pretty good. Later Tony

WOW! Birch hill was amazing!!!!!!! I won't go into the same boring reviews, But i was wondering if anybody else heard James say "Mike, You want to sing this one?" right before the killing hand...(Thought it was kinda funny refering to the New Haven incident....)

I only met two jammers, Hey Syrinx! and i can't remeber the other guys name.. Also there was a female ytsejammer in the lobby after the show, Didn't get to ask for a name...

I think it was Heather who mentioned she was standing front row center... how's that possible when thats where i was standing?

The only thing i couldn't stand was people tryin to get in front of me, what rude bastards...Where do people get off tryin to get in front of ya when you have been standing there hours before they even showed up?

Hey I was just wondering if anybody has ever ordered any CD's from "CD Cellar" or "That CD Place". I am thinking of buying some CD's from them but I don't know if they are trustworthy or not. Has anyone heard about a DT boot called "Drifting Away" that was recorded in Milwaukee '93 ? and also another boot called "Excellent" recorded in NYC July 23 '93. Anyways I would appreciate it if anybody can help me out.

    Absolutely!

The keys intro to "Erotomania" would qualify as balls 'n chunk in my book.

Remember that picutre with the music in the chair getting literally blown backwards?. I was tempted to just lean forward to see if the sound waves (was that bass, bass drum or synth?) would cancel gravity...

I was a little right of center, about 5 rows in front of the soundboard and had a lot of trouble hearing the keys. I mentioned this to Derek afterwards. I imagine it must be tough to mix DT if you're not intimiately familiar enough with the songs to know the changes (not that there's all that many, right? :)

Quick question: Where does one pick up one of these cool, DT/prog. listening, parents? My Dad likes to hum/sing Strangers in the Night over and over again :) (not that there's anything wrong with that song :):) p.s. I love my Dad!

Everyone gets annoyed at the No-Left Turn on the highways in NJ, but what if they allowed those turns on the highways? Route 9 is only a two lane highway. The traffic would get backed up for at least a 1/2 mile, because the other side of the highway won't let you turn left. Not to mention that most people won't let you get to the other lane to get around the people turning left.

Sure, on some roads there are Left-Turn lights on the traffic lights, but that doesn't last too long and you still have to wait for the light to change just like if you had to wait in a jug-handle. And it's easier to make a U-turn in those U & Left turn jughandles than if you used the left-turn lane in the middle of the highway.

My experience tends to be that a foreign language usually sounds 'too fast', when you don't have much knowledge of it... Ie. when I was learning spanish in high school... <anybody else???>... While you could manage the "hola isabel, yo soy pandaman" stuff on the 'lab' stuff... you really couldn't watch Telemundo and get everything they were saying, because "they're speaking too FAST!!!" I'm sure other asian languages sound 'faster' perhaps by some part because they DO go faster... but most probably because we don't understand them.

Ok. I just listened to KH on WDADU and KH on LATM back to back. the intros are DIFFERENT. On the one hand (no pun intended) there is an acoustic intro. On the other, the other thing that they played at the BH. I still insist that the melody is TLF. and I have plenty of musical training. too much to write down. but I too play many instruments and have had students, and G-d willing, I will have many more in the public schools of america. So lets stop arguing. I hate it. I stand by my opinion and you by yours. so fuck it and lets move on. Howard

A few comments on the Birchhell show before I take, and most likly fail, my last final. FUCKING awesome. MIKE kicked my ass all night long. I can't get over that Demonic laugh in The Killing Hand. What a fucking musical god. This boy can sing.

It was great to meat a few more people, Syrnix, LD, Damon, Texas-man, Wisha, taco person, Breasts (or Jill :) and great to see fucking Wherry and Ibby once again. Hey Ibby we have to do some more of those shots, and if we can get those fucking girls to do 'em with us that would be ok by me.

Fucking, I met the band. They rocked. The word from JOhn P. is that Paul Northfield (queensryche, rush) was at the show and is in the lead for the producer job. They have yet to do any studio work, but still are shotting for a early summer JUne/July release.

More to follow..... 2112....... FU syrinx, I have assumed control.
