Can't call it backstage because, well, there was none; the band kinda
came out to us, _sans_ The Silent Myung. :)
Per James, there is no chance whatsoever of a double CD release. He
confirmed they have 120 minutes of material written. I mentioned two
separate CDs, "like Guns'n'Roses did," and his face kinda lit up as if
the thought had never occurred to him. "THAT's a possibility," he
said. Cool, hope this can be done. -I- think it's workable.
I wonder if I changed Ytse-history by mentioning the idea? :) Nahh,
probably not. heh
James also confirmed Paul Northfield as the leading candidate for
producer. This must be a a very Ytsejammish question, because when
Wes/Beavis asked him, James asked "Are you on the Jam?" :)
Derek had some comments for those here who have criticized his
interpretation of older songs which he specifically asked me to post.
I'll post part or all of his comments after I get some certain email
back about this.
So, let's beg EastWest for two separate CDs, a la G'n'R's USE YOUR
ILLUSION double release. :) :)
Oh, it was extremely cool of the band to come out to us -- many bands
would not have bothered -- but I hope they NEVER fuckin' play Birch
Hill again. Not just because of the size and the overselling of the
venue, but because the staff there was extremely rude when they tossed
us out, WHILE THE MEET'N'GREET WAS STILL GOING ON. Mike P. was still
chatting and autographing at the time, and I can only hope he was as
pissed as we were. There weren't more than ten people waiting to chat
at the time -- I was one of 'em -- and the whole thing stank like last
month's phish.
To the Jammer who griped about them playing BH, I suspect this little
mini-tour had minimal or no label support (after all, they're not
supporting an album in stores). I suspect they'll play bigger venues
when they're officially "on tour" next summer. I have some thoughts
about the best Atlanta venues, but I'll save 'em for Scott S. at
Pinnacle. :)

I know at BH, they were really tight on security, after speaking to DT's tour manager who told me that security was pumped to destroy anybody with bootlegging equipment. Chances are that we don't have any boots from this mini-tour. Sorry guys, if you got a boot, then you are really good at sneaking equipment in, because security was tight and they were pumped to mawl anybody.

Well, I had to get out of there. I don't like crowds, so it was a little slice of "hell" for me to be there. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. But, once it was over, I said a fast goodbye and beat feet for the door and never looked back. I must say that I was pleased to have met SO many cool people.

Well, I never said that all alternative music is mindless, and I didn't mention names, so I basically left it up to the reader to fill in the blanks for himself. I would really love to hear a good guitar solo on top 40 radio again, or god help us, some keys on a record.
And forgive me if I don't appreciate good art. I mean, I blew my nose last week and it looked pretty good to me, but I am sure it's not classic art by any means. All those colors. Pretty tough when you see the way i do, I guess. :)
OK, maybe the under-appreciation of keys thread is getting tired, but the discussion is worth something, to me at least. Hell, doesn't it beat out (woohoo, I got into 2112) or the guy who flamed the other guy about an intro to a song and its title? Comeon. I told you, midterms and finals bring out the best or the worst in Jammers. The difference is that I got bit by da bug this time.

Yes, Howard. The intros are different. I believe that that's why it's called "Another Hand/The Killing Hand" on LatM. "Another Hand" is the intro you're talking about, I think.

Yes, I really am blind, I don't do this for attention. I use speech synthesis to read the screen of my cmoputer. It si completely MS-DOS based, therefore my Internet access is limitted to what I find for DOS on the NEt or calling into UNIX computers or something, either way, I have no Netscape, no pirch, no mirc. Man, I am in the dark ages. I can't see much at all, if you saw me at Birch Hill, you probably figured that out. Well, except Derek who didn't know during most of the interview until I pulled out my cane to leave. Man, talk about uncomfortable, on his part, I don't know if he knew what to do. Oh well, that's the usual response anyway. No offense, Derek, if you are reading this, which he seems to. Oh well, more on the Derek interview in a later post.

Hey, this didn't happen overnight! I've been a metalhead for years now and my dad just recently picked up a DT CD. It shocked the shit outta me. He's always liked the older stuff like Iron Butterfly and Zeppelin, but he HATES my music for the most part. One time, I was watching a vid of DT playing "Under a Glass Moon" and my dad walked in. He couldn't stand it, said "It sounds like a bunch of people vommiting." I think I just drilled metal into his head so much with my guitar playing that since I'm away at college now, he kinda misses the noize. It feels weird to have him come full circle and buy one of DT's CDs, especially their heaviest one (no arguments, please!! Just opinion!), AWAKE. I'm sorry, I just can't see my 50 year old dad headbanging. It's a weird sight.

Let's face facts, folks. Record companies only care about the moey not the music. They can sign anybody who just want to pump out hits. There had to have been a time in the distant past when the music mattered, but once the late 60s demonstrated that rock could make money, watch how the music slowly mattered less and the money mattered more. Then once MTV rolled around, all hope for musical growth ended. Sorry, but music is a business, the music will never matter again, as long as people in record companies are selling, we will have the contracts. There are your exceptions like DT and Rush, but these are few and far between, and how much support is DT getting, anyway? Extreme is a classic example of how record companies screw over artists. If they wouldn't have written More than Words, maybe Extreme would never have gotten the exposure, but they wouldn't have been pigeonholed into that sound. WholeHearted didn't help matters either when that became a hit. So, it's the musician vs. the record exec. Man, I really hope that Magna Carta and other labels like that really make some headway by caring about the musician more than their pockets. I'd love to see a return to music for music's sake.

Can you believe that Al Balkewicz (Ripoff) emailed me after my remark about paying the two guys with the words "Is there a problem?". Damn straigt there is problem. He has owed me tapes for well over 2 years now and all I have received are excuses. To all the new jammers, do not trade with Al Balkewicz else you will get ripped off.
On a side note. All these reviews of the new songs make me can't wait to actually hear some of them...

Dali is cool, but I'm not into any of those others. Dvorak is way cooler than Mozart, et. al., in my opinion (but that's because I don't like piano as a featured or solo instrument) - "From the New World" is the best orchestral composition ever, IMHO. As for literature, W.B. Yeats, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Irving, and K. Vonnegut are some of my favorites.

We stopped at a Best Buy here in Atlanta as soon as we got into town on the trip, 'cause Mark "BigSwifty" had never seen one. In true Ytsejam style, the store contained some astounding sights:
--In the audio-video listening station (big palooka of a machine that shows your choice of audio and -- when available -- video clips) we found, of all things, a listing for LIVE AT THE MARQUEE. The three songs you could request were PMU, Metropolis and (I think) TTT. No video clips available. Normally they stock the CDs listed in the machine in racks right beside it, but there was no rack for LatM. Still, pretty fuckin' amazing. (Only the Japanese pressing -- one copy -- was actually in the DT section.)
--In one of those little sections of "featured" CDs on the end of one of the rows, a whole facing devoted to Magna Carta and Shrapnel artists, including Lemur Voice, Altura, the WORKING MAN tribute, their YES tribute, STEINWAY TO HEAVEN, etc. Marcel and friends, it was cool to see your CD featured that way. Granted, this section faced the back of the store and not the front, but still, it's decent exposure.
So, the road component of our long Ytse-trip from hell (musta driven through ten fuckin inches of rain between South Carolina and BH :)) ended on a definite up-note. What's next, Superior opening for DT in summer '97?
Oh, one post-script of James stuff from post-show: he said the new CD (new CDs? :)) should be out by summer, by fall at the latest. They hope to be in the studio in February with whatever producer they wind up getting, Paul Northfield being the leading candidate. He must be cool; he has the same first name as me. :) :) ~~~~

Howard, this is not an opinion. I have 18 years of keyboard experience, I am taught by ear, due to blindness, I think my hearing is much better than most of sighted people's hearing, and the intro is not the To live Forever intro, it is another hand. Listen to the intro on Latm and listen to tlf and you will hear a definite differnce. Sorry, I hate to tell you, but you are incorrect. This is not opinion. This is a fact that can be proven. listen to the two back to back and you will hear that they are different. There are similarities, they use the same guitar sound, but the chords and guitar melody are very different.

Just check out the back of LATM. It's called "another hand." The melody may/may not be the same, but the title is "another hand."

For those who think their parents are hip. I noticed my dad listening to somethng other than oldies. This has been a trend lately. When I left for school in 1992, he was an oldies freak. I noticed the change when we were driving home listening to the Q104.3 of old, (NY NJ people will know what I mean) and Metalica came on. now we were talking and all, but he didn't turn it off. The surprise was wehn Rush came on and he turned it up. Distant Early Warning. He even said he liked the stuff. My Dad now listens to all the modern rock stuff now. Granted, it's not prog, but it beats oldies. It all depends on how open-minded your parents are. if they don't want to esxcape their youth, they won't, but some parents have a more musical mind and can open up to new things. Too bad my Mom is stuck in the past.

I love the old Hammond players. For the Crowes, I'd say it's decent, but I wouldn't get really excited. They ain't bad, they just don't really stand out to me, for the most part. Though "Remedy" has a habit of getting lodged in my head from time to time....

Cobham is amazing. "Spectrum" is just awesome. What I'm dying to hear is the demo he did with Will Lee that got him that contract. Will's always been a favorite of mine. Other guys (and I'm replying to 2119, so I have NO idea if they got mentioned before):
Fletcher Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society, Jonas Hellborg, Sonny Sharrock (and Last Exit), Christian McBride, Eddie Gomez, Tony Williams.
I'd figure they've been since mentioned, but I also haven't seen Duke Ellington, Count Basie, or Charlie Parker mentioned, and those guys are jazz building blocks. If you're into Dream Theater, this might not be where I start (I'd pick up with Brand X, Weather Report, John Scofield, and Mahavishnu Orchstra), but there's some great stuff to be mined.

Van Gogh is wonderful. Dali interesting. Stringberg hot and cold. Hemingway vital. Nietzsche German.
Degas cool, Monet more so. Schubert wrote wonderful, wonderful melodies. Mozart is sublime. Voltaire is inspiring, the greatest of the philosophes.
I don't know that this is the venue for discussing, for example, Nietzsche's aesthetics, but they are quite interesting. One thing that crossed my mind last weekend, while flipping through old guitar mags, is that the classical influence in rock music seems, by and large, to be limited to Baroque music. I've heard Billy Sheehan talking about Mussorgsky and the guys from Fear Factory talking about Mahler, but you just don't get it a lot. ELP has always been inspiring in that light because they've borrowed from the greatest pieces from the entire cannon, and notg just music from 1650 to 1750. "Pictures," of course..."Mars." They're borrowing from a broader and more interesting tradition, I'd say.
