i'm kinda glad they're messing around with the arrangements. i'm getting
bored with hearing the same songs the same way every time... anyone else
agree? i have a big pile of boots from the i&w tours and there's very
little variation... i hope they continue to do this, and maybe
(hopefully...) inject some real improvisation into their shows (not just
the "improvs" that are the same every night :)

i also kinda like the fact that they seem to be a lot looser on stage...
even Fates Warning, whose music is even more serious than DT's, seemed
kinda loose and had a good time on stage. that makes a show a lot more
enjoyable for me... DT's music is kinda serious, but there's a lighter,
more freeform edge to it, like Erotomania and take the time and stuff,
and i think that if they try to be all serious and uptight about it will
    lose something.

i also like the fact that they've been playing longer, and i hope that's
not just for these few shows... i'd rather see an evening with dream
theater than dream theater and some crappy alternative band openers.

i wish i could've been at one of the recent shows... maybe the band
could be really nice and release a little LATM-style EP with some of the
new versinos of the songs. that would be really cool *hint hint*

anyway, i'm listening to DT now for the first time in a long time. it's
kinda refreshing, Awake had kinda lost its magic for me, so i quit
listening to it for several months... now that i'm listening to it
again, i've come to the conclusion that i really love this album.

my problem with awake is they didn't seem to put as much work into
writing it as they did into images & words... awake is a lot more
choppy. but since i don't *only* listen to prog stuff anymore, this
doesn't bother me as much. but i still hope this is fixed on the new
album... i like the smooth flowing of Images & Words, that and James's
smooth singing are the only things i miss from Awake.

but i don't miss Kevin anymore. Kevin's a great guy and great
keyboardist, but he was practically gone from Awake... and there's not
much on there that couldn't have been done without him, which is
probably a result of his disinterest. Kev - good luck. Derek - thank
you. You seem to be a hell of a good influence on the rest of the band.
you rule the fucking world, and don't let anyone think you're expendable.

Looking forward to the next album,
-William (from the pittsburgh chapter of the Derek Sherinian fan club)

Here's what we got for Take Away My Pain (aka the only song
anyone could understand what James was singing)

    Opening Verse:
He was sitting at the edge of his bed
staring at the headlines in paper
He said "Look at poor Gene Kelly
I guess he won't be singing in the rain"
You took away all my heroes
Can you take away my pain.

    Second Verse:
She was standing at the end of his bed
Looking for the message in their faces
She said "What else can you do babe,
I guess I won't be coming home again"
You took away all my promises
Can you take away my pain.

    Last verse:

I'm sitting at the edge of my bed,
Staring at the headlines in paper,
      Let's say goodbye to Jesus
the world he left won't ever be the same.
      You Took Away My hero,
      Now Take Away My Pain.

Chori are different, here are two:
      Take away my pain
      Leave the cold outside
      Please don't let it rain
I'll stumble on my pride <--- not really sure about this.
      Take away my pain
      I'm not frightened anymore
Stay with me tonight, I'm tired of this fight
Soon I'll be knocking at your door.

      Take away my pain
      Bring the cold inside
      Please let it rain
I'll stumble on my pride <--- not really sure about this.
      Take away my pain
I'm not frightened anymore <----- or this
Stay with me tonight, I'm tired of this fight <--- or this
Soon I'll be knocking at your door. < ---- or this

And still needs a bridge and the second chorus, too...

Thanks Andy Keegan. Most of this is from him!
Anyone catch any of the other new stuff?

                                            -jeremy

    Hey there,
I think that a discussion of the merits of the band Poison is
probably number one on the list of "threads that I never thought I'd see
    here."
But this appearance is insanely timely because it was just weeks
ago that I picked up my old tapes (with authentic Rikki Rockett
autographs) to give them another listen for old times sake. The ones I
picked up were the first two, "Look What..." and "Open Up..."
CC may have reasonable control over his guitar and Rikki may be
able to impress some of you drummers out there, but I find that the
lyrics (and I mean only the FIRST TWO ALBUMS) ruin everything. I didn't
get the chance to appreciate musical technique because Bret's
ridiculously-exagerated sexual innuendo had me on the floor laughing.
When I was at the end of my Jr. High years, I thought that Poison
was the god-band. I saw them live twice. But I just can't look at the old
stuff and take any of it seriously. I know that they have not-overtly
sexual songs like "I won't forget you" and "every rose", but these seem
to be the excpetions. Is anyone with me on this?
Would we like Rush and DT if Ged and James were out there,
licking there lips, talking about their plans for a "roll in the hay"? I
always hated "in the mood" for just that reason.
This is my humble opinion. I hope the Poison-lovers don't hit me
too hard. They were my favorite band once.

    Adios,
    Allen K.

hmm... how could someone have the lyrics to take away my pain figured out if
they'd only seen the show... ok, thats it, someone's got it recorded. i
just KNOW it. arrrgh, c'mon! pllleeeeasssseee nice man, mail me!! i have
nice happy fun things to trade! hehehe.

anyways, mike (estok) made a good point about buying 7 marillion discs..
mainly because this band rocks so much, and if i had as much of their cds as
i had DT i'd have to change my "favorite band" slot quite possibly. I think
DT should release the uncovered gig Right Da Fook now so we can tide over
until summer, which it may get kicked back again. you hear? "see you
sometime in '96" eh? as i see it, you've got until jan 1 to get this out,
    that means YOU DT :)

    anyways, acoustic guitars are fun.

Everyone has been asking/looking for bootlegs of these most
recent shows. I want in on this too. If ANYONE managed to make a copy,
PLEASE e-mail me. I'll give you all the tapes and postage that you want.
I saw the New Haven and Providence shows so I'd like these the
most, but I know that beggars can't be choosers and I'll take whatever
    y'all have to offer.
I hope that someone managed to get away with a copy somewhere.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is the Christmas album being referred to.

It does contain the Christmas Eve / Sarajevo 12-24 song as does Dead
Winter Dead. TSO is a whole new story line with a ton of different
    vocalists....

I hate to start up one of those Band X Rox Nadz posts here, but I
have to say for those of you not yet introduced to Altura, I'd highly
recommend it. I just picked it up today and it's really emotional.
The band credits it toward the disruption of society and the
alteration that comes when we succumb to the "apathetic tone of the
mainstream society." It's really not too much like DT, but they
remod me of someone. there are parts that do sound like Metropolis
rip-offs, but that's only in a small few places. I think I'm going
    to really like this CD.

Also, I hope that Angra's as good as everyone says they are, I'm
gonna have to fork out about $25 to get it on import.

Another thing, could someone please E-Mail me (privately) the
address of a place so I can order Superior's album? Bernd?

    Message-ID: <199612180343.TAA29562@mailsun3-fddi.us.oracle.com>

    To Howard:
Another hand does NOT have the same melody, or chords, as TLF. This is not my
OPINION, it is a fact. You say you've studied music and play all sorts of
instruments. I find that hard to believe, if your ears are that bad. TLF
modulates constantly between the major and minor flavors of its key. If you
don't believe me, try playing a 3rd (major indication) over the first half of
a verse line, then drop it to a flatted 3rd (minor indication) over the second
half. It sounds right - if you alter that, it will sound messed up. The mix
of these keys is part of the beauty of that song - even for nonmusicians who
don't know it's happening, the ear appreciates the subtlety and hints of
ambiguity. Another Hand is in a strictly major (Ionian) key, with no minor
references whatsoever, except perhaps the last 2 chords as it segues into The
Killing Hand. So, where is the melody in Another Hand which is also in TLF?
The guitar line? I challenge you to find that melody anywhere in TLF - give
me a time in the song when it occurs. If you were not really, then, referring
to "melody" persay, and were really talking chords/harmony, then my argument
about modulation rules out the possibility of the chords being the same.
These are two DIFFERENT songs, with different melodies and harmonies, which in
my opinion share a mood, a certain uplifting feeling, but nevertheless are
musically different. One musical commonality that may be confusing you is the
use of ninth (or sus2) chords in both songs, but Petrucci does that in most
(all?) of their "major" key songs.

Let's end this foolish discussion now.

all of you people who don't know music theory- me and Bafu are not playing
ytse-battleship.) The modes never end. Do you know the melodic minor scale?
Well if you map it out across the fretboard like you do to create the modes
based on the major scale it magically creates seven new minor modes! (It
might be the harmonic minor scale I'm not sure off the top of my head.) I
have not learned my minor modes yet out of fear of serious brain damage! In
my dabbling with music theory I have come to believe that people who fully

Well, Ive gotta put my .02 in about the awesome time I had at Birch
Hill!! What a show! I'm not going to bother with a show review (you've
all heard tons of those by now) Instead, Id like to extend personal
thanks to all the cool jammers I met and hung out with. It was so great
to get out of my dinky little town of Constableville, NY and actually
    live a little!
So...First of all I gotta thank Skadz for all the cool stuff and
for the help in aligning the Transmitter:), Heather for the Dew and the
traveling snacks (MUCH appreciated)and of course the TGIF thing, the
pretty female jammer with dark hair (for the life of me I cant remember
your name!-sorry!) for the drink of water after the show, Brian Wherry
(Wacky!) for the lodging, guitar tips, and everything else. Brian, when
you and the Celtic Princess finally hit it off in Alaska ontop the
Ultimate Driving Machine, be sure to sort that shiznit:):) And of
cousre, all the other ytsepeople who I met but forgot to mention!
To Anthony, Chris, and Tom, you guys rule!! It was cool
meeting you guys. Keep up the great work!
To the rest of the Ytsejam, listen to Clockwork NOW!
DT put on an awesome show, better than when I saw them at the
Strand last August. As an added bonus, I finally got to meet John
Petrucci. That was very cool. (kind of a mini-dream come true) I wish we
could have talked to the rest of the band, but the overly pleasant
security staff of The Birch Hill Night Club thought we 'were all full of
shit':) So, we got kicked out early. Id like to send out a very warm and
happy holidays to all of them, especially the stately gentleman that so
curteously asked Brian and I to display our wristbands.:):)
Well, to top it all off, Dec 15 was my birthday. I turned 21 in
the middle of a DT show!! Pretty nifty!! Im just going to have to buy
that new JPM model for myself as kind of a late birthday present. (heh
heh) OK!! Well, I've taken up enough space!! Everybody shop!

This post had me ROLLING. Most of my clustermates are either done with
finals or home for the holidays, so I can now laugh in a brutally high
volume when posts like this kick the tripwire.

She flamed your ass pretty good, eh?

Maybe if you can convince Damon and WildKoba that the oppression of the
    keyboard began in NJ...

HEY!! *I* WAS THAT FAT GUY, YA PRICK!! Well not really. Sounds like you
had a rip-roarin' good time, though. Sorry I couldn't have been there. :)

Where did you go to school, boy? Hard Knox?

The guitar is a filangic symbol. That's why I play it. It reminds me of my long, hard index finger. Girls who see guys playing filangic things are convinced that they're dextrous and sensitive, just like the digits of an index finger. And the drums? Have you ever seen a drumstick that DIDN'T look like an index finger? You think that shape is just COINCIDENCE?
