NO DTC, but I really need help...

I have run out of ideas for Christmas presents, so I am resorting to the old
realiable gift certificates. Can anyone in Canada (preferably Toronto) tell
me if there are any Sam Goody or Tower Records stores there? If not, can you
tell me what music stores are available? I don't want to get them if my
cousins are going to have to come down to NYC to use them.

    Thanks in advance.

I got to the show at 11:15 and DT was already playing. At 11:30, I was
finally able to get up through the staircase and actually see the show
(despite the constant line of people walking in front of me. Can someone tell
me when they actually went on? I'd like to know how much I missed. Thanks.

    Hi y'all...

Dunno what this bit is you're talking about, but I was so sure that
the "He doesn't know what a woman is" bit was Julian Sands taken
from "Boxing Helena" until purely by chance I caught the trailer for
"A Room With A View" on Channel 4 (UK) & the very bit of dialogue
they chose to play over the visuals was this very bit DT used on
    "Space Dye Vest"...

So what is this "Conan" connection?

You know it's funny. I saw the I&W tour twice, and James could have been
singing offstage for all I cared. He just didn't do it for me. Then came
the Awake tour (which I only saw once.) I couldn't pay attention to
anything BUT James. He was REALLY on it and just seemed to be more a part
    of the band.

    All this ragging on Poison...

I like Poison's first two but after that they just dont impress me. Sure
the first 2 aren't in the quality of DT but those Poison cds were great
    party and fun songs.

I guess that in order to get the lyrics to Take away the pain someone
    taped the show? who?

I just have to tell people that will actuallly appreciate this. This morning I
got into my car, turned on the local rock station and they were actually
playing DT!!! It was "Another Day", but you have to start somewhere. This
could be the result of one of two things 1) someone knows that DT is coming in
concert in the near future or 2) someone in Salt Lake actually doesn't have
their head stuck up their ass!!! Now all they have to do is start playing
Helloween and some more Savatage and I'll be set.Just thought you'd like to
    know.....

Damn do I have a lot of jams to catch up on.

I have just come out of a delightful coma known as Tad Williams' new book:
Otherland: City of Golden Shadow. Wow. Glad I found it AFTER finals or I
never would have passed my classes.

No Tapestry because of the Xmas CD? I thought I read something to thatt
effect. Oh well, I had a suspicion that this would happen. Mike, do us
(me) a favor and put the Yes Medley on a future project? That's what I
    really want to hear.

Grunt. Been up all night again because of that book. DIdn't even leave the
apartment all day, but I finished it! har har. Now I can get on with life. :)

Ah yes, the green stuff. Ok, a little electronics lesson here. The green
stuff is actually a coating called Solder Mask. It comes in a variety of
colors, however the electronics industry has adopted green as a standard for
some reason. The lighter green lines are actually copper "traces" that
carry current through them. The copper is bonded to a non-conductive
substrate, usually a glass-laminate of sorts.

So yes, you are correct. Well, thats the quick version. If anyone is
really interested in being bored to death, I could give you a longer
    version. ;>

all you guys that sent me blanks for shows, i said that i would get
around to them whenever i could. i havent had time for various reasons,
including doing other trades. i dont feel any obligation to get tapes out
in any time frame considering i am doing it as a favor. if you wanted the
shows in a hurry then do a real trade for them, or get on a tape tree.

i have finally learned how to say no to analog grovelers, so i dont
    really have this problem anymore.

if you sent me blanks for me to tape shows on and return, please email
me and remind me (unlike mr. miller) before posting public insults. i
havent heard anything from this guy in months.

i am really busy, and making analog tapes is a pain in the ass that
i never have time for. i am glad to provide any of my DATs as seeds
for trees though, if anyone wants to admin one.

         Hey fellow jammers,

At the risk of starting a strand that could be dangerous, I wanted to
ask about the end of Metropolis at Birch Hole...uh I mean Hill.

If my ears served me correctly, I could have sworn I heard a little
bit of Fortune in Lies at the very end of Metropolis. I was listening
to Live at the Marquee driving to work today, and I'm sure there was a
rift of the beginning of Fortune at the end of Metropolis during Sat's
encore. Any one else hear that???? I ask with trepidation as I do
not want to suffer the same consequence as Howee and the whole Killing
         hand/Another Hand/Red Hand/Mr Hand debacle.

I was a little to the left of the sound board on the second level
straining to see around perhaps the biggest human/bouncer I have ever
seen, right in the center at the top step next to the board. I
thought it was King Kong Bundy from Wrestling fame, but I could be
         mistaken. Excellent show nonetheless.

Note to those bummed about getting pushed around either on the floor
or elsewhere......Welcome to NJ. Where there is no correlation to the
time you get to a show and the better position to the stage you stand.

One more time: "The patio bar is open" yeah...OK

About two years ago I was riding in my friend's car and he had some metal
stuff going in the tape player... Being pretty ignorant about different
types of metal at the time, I didn't pay much attention beyond asking,
"Who is this?" Turned out it was DT, of course, but I didn't appreciate
it much then... I just noticed that the drums were cool and their
guitarist played fast. Then I get a tape from this same friend, with
"Surrounded" on it, and I absolutely fell in love with the song (to this
day I listen to that when I'm depressed or upset: I sit in my room and
turn off all the lights and crank up "Surrounded" until I can feel every
note through the floor--it always gives me chills and calms me down).
Then, coincidentally enough, I found out that this guy I worked with at
PayLess was really into DT. (And for whoever added "Merry Christmas from
PayLess" to their post--if you'd ever worked at PayLess, you'd know that
Christmas is anything BUT merry there! <g>) Anyway, this guy was pretty
much a total loser, but he had good taste in music, so when he told me
that I&W was the best album in the world, I went out and bought it... And
things pretty much went from there. I&W is still my favorite album,
although Awake is growing on me more and more as I listen to it (I wasn't
as impressed when I first heard it). That's another interesting
phenomenon... music growing on you. Why do you suppose that happens?

My brain fried from my epistemology final,

Actually, my old teachers (One a Berklee Grad, one an American Conservatory
of Music grad) would disagree. I was figuring out a Pantera song (You know,
from Cowboys, their only good album) and I figured out the scale he was
using, which I noted to be one of the shapes from Harmonic minor, but played
from a different scale degree. I was told it was called Phrygian Dominant.
I'll whoop out my old Guitar Grimoire to verify i they all have names or
not.... if they don't, I think the Ytses should name them. "I claim this
scale in the name of Dream Theater. Hence forth it shall be known as
    DiMeolian Minor!"

Now, Damon. Don't go projecting your negativity upon this list or the world
at large for that matter. :) You have to give DT a chance to be Big...
they have all the elements to satisfy society, short of a drummer with a 3
piece kit that sits around like a tool (Sorry Metallica Fans) and a
guitarist that plays the "Out of Tune" scale in every position.

I have two problems. Well, one problem and one concern.
            1) Can anyone tell me where to get a copy of the Lie single. I
understand it has To Live Forever on it (feel free to
correct). I have Eve on The Silent Man single, and want
                    to complete my set.
            2) I'm looking for recommendations a la Mike Bahr's productions.
If someone can tell me which are best (CM, WDATU, etc.),
                    I'd appreciate it. It's not a trust thing, it's a money
                    thing.

One other thing, could someone send me a list of the songs played at the
Birch Hill show, in order. Emphasis on in order. I remember all the
songs, just not their order, and I would have written it down, but the
Birch Hill security frisked me and took my pen and index cards, saying I
could make drawings of the band, which is paramount to taking pictures.
Yes, I'm joking. I left them in the car.
Also, nice to see the recommendations on other bands, I'll have
    to check them out sometime.

            Hey jammerz,

Wow! I just got home from a day out and got no new jams! Pretty
    weird, not?
This one for New York City and Denver (hmmm, Dallas too :) ) jammerz:
Like, I'm going on a trip to USA in January, and I intend to buy
a multi-effect processor for my guitar (I sold my old Zoom 2020 some
time ago). So, I would appreciate if some guys could tell me (privately)
of some good shops where I could find those (specially with a GOOD price
    :) ).
Hmmm... I've asked this before, methinks... I know it's kinda
difficult to find LIT in the USA, but if someone could tell me of some
good CD stores in those cities (specially near downtown, it'll probably
be the only part of the city I'll go :) )??? Trust me, it's even more
difficult (and expensive) to find it here... I know I'll be being a dick
(tm?) but I'd prefer LD from VCR tapes.

They played the first couple of opening bars to Fortune
in Lies....I knew someone else would catch it....

Oh, I had another question - at TGIF, there was a guy
and girl that came in...the guy looked kinda like Portnoy, was
pretty big (muscle-wise), and had a nice backstage pass thingy
around his neck....anyone know who he was - a 'Jammer, roadie, etc.?

You forgot the second half of the quote:
"Welcome to NJ.....now get the fuck out"

    Hi,

I'll be attending the Metallica show in Fresno on Thurs and thanks to being in the Metallica Club I got a backstage pass for the show. According to the letter I got I'll be able to meet members of the band before the show.

Now, the reason I'm posting this. If any of you have any questions for any of them email them to me and I'll ask as many as I possibly can. I'm not interested in kissing their ass like Kurt Loder and co. at eMpTyV, but no questions of a confrontational nature. What I mean is no:

Why'd you pussies sell out? What made you decide to be trendy? When will you make a GOOD album? I think you get my point. Anyway, I'll be leaving around noon pst on Thursday, so I'll take what questions I have with me and ask them all I can.

    Scott

Hey there! I just wanted to comment on a couple of recent 'threads' on the Jam. First up is how I "discovered" Dream Theater:

The first exposure I ever had to DT was in John P's Guitar World column, Wild Stringdom. This was in late '93/early '94, just after I had first picked up a guitar. I used to read those mags cover to cover, and every month John would be writing about something like "soloing over an E major Mixolydian scale" and all kinds of weird scales and chord patterns (I still don't understand half of that stuff!). I would just look at this stuff and think that Petrucci was some kind of self-indulgent wanker whose songs were made up of every scale he could think of, so needless to say my opinion of him wasn't too high. Then my brother bought this metal compilation disc called "Hard Music", which has the edited version of PMU on it (BTW, has anyone else ever heard this version? The whole 2nd verse {"Watch the sparrow..."} is cut out, and at the end they just loop the chorus over and over. The whole continuity of the song is ruined.). So I listened to the song and thought "Okay, the man has some chops", but I still needed more convincing. So then one day in fall '94 I was watching Power 30 on MuchMusic and "Lie" came on. I was totally blown away by the band's musicianship and John' *smoking* guitar solo! I knew right away that I *had* to get Awake, so I ordered it from Columbia House (none of the stores around here have ever heard of DT) and when it arrived I played it non-stop for like 2 or 3 weeks and tried to imagine how I had ever lived without it! Awake is still my favorite DT album and is also one of my top albums of all time.

This sort of leads me to the next topic I wanted to discuss: What if DT were to suddenly become huge and everyone and their dog was listening to them? I'm pretty sure that I would still continue to support them and would remain as big a fan as ever. I'm thankful for the fact that I have discovered DT while they are still a relatively young and unknown band. Most of the other bands that I listen to (Van Halen, Megadeth, Zeppelin, etc.) were already well- established (or long since broke up) by the time I started listening to them. But DT is sort of like my own little secret that I can share with the rest of you 900+ Jammers. But if they were to sell 27 million copies of their next album and proceed to sell out every football stadium in the world, I don't think I would suddenly abandon them just because people start liking them cuz it's "kewl" to like them. I certainly don't listen to them to be cool now, and as long as they stay true to their music, I think I'll always be anxiously awaiting new music from them and will continue to support them in every way possible.

Whew! Sorry if that put anyone to sleep, but I just wanted to sort out some things I had been thinking about lately. If you've read this far, thanks for paying attention!

    Til next time, Jeff
