    Hi Jammers,
Richie Sambora has been mentioned a fair bit on
some recent jams, and although I grew out of Bon Jovi a few years ago
I did really like Richie's solo album. I managed last year when I was
in Hong Kong to pick up a CD boot of Richie, recorded in 91 on his promo
tour, it is a great disc, it has solo material, BJ stuff, and some
stuff that Richie wrote for other artists.
If anyone would like a copy, e-mail me private
and I'm sure we can work out a trade.

    Cheers
    Graham

Well, this is my first post to the list in about 2 years (yes, that long)
so we'll see how this goes. First, I apologize for the lack of DT content.

I went to one of the local record stores 3 days ago to pick up a copy of
Mahler's 3rd Symphony and a copy of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. At the
time, there were about a dozen CD's in the bin. I liked it so much, that
I decided to buy a copy for my mom. I went back the next afternoon and
they were all gone! TSO is apparently one of the most requested albums
of any nature, seasonal or not, right now. Funny thing is, people aren't
buying other Christmas albums in any great numbers, just TSO, which makes
    me think.

First, Savatage is, in terms of album sales, probably the most popular
progressive metal/hard rock bands there has ever been. The band has a
good relationship with the record company. Atlantic/Time-Warner is
heavily promoting this album. A&E is giving it away as part of a
promotion. Now, I think, the reason TSO was made is, obviously, for
Christmas. The reason it's selling at all is because of Christmas.
BUT, the reason it's selling so well is not simply because it's
Christmas. If so, then why aren't other albums selling well (TSO
is so far outstripping them in sales it's unbelievable)? It is
selling well because of the above factors asn because it is an
extremely emotional, symphonic, and melodic album and because it
has been done by the members of Savatage and company. If it were just
another Christmas album, it would sell only as well as the other
Christmas albums. Instead, it's selling and being requested in a
    way that is almost phenomenal.

For those who haven't heard it: buy it. Listen to it before you
criticize it. It is not just a "Christmas song". Here's who mad this
    album:

Robert Kinkel - piano and keys
    John Middleton - bass
Jon Oliva - piano, keys, and bass guitar
    Paul O'Neill - rhythm guitar
Al Pitrelli - lead, rhythm, bass buitar
    Jeff Plate - drums
    cellos and french horns
6 solo vocalists and 8 backup vocalists and a children's choir

This album can be described perhaps best as Mozart meets metal.
It is very heavy at times and simple and melodic at times (such
as the acoustic guitar solo piece) and has just about the best
production quality I have ever heard on an album. It is perhaps
the most "heavy and progressive" album to come out in a long
time. While Dream Theater has a jazz-influenced progressive
sound, Savatage is very much classical/symphonic-oriented. This
does not mean that 'tage is only "slightly" progressive, as
someone on this list mentioned (prompting me to write this).
It only means that it's a different style. By any definition
of the ambiguously-defined term "progressive", Savatage, including
Oliva and O'Neill, *is* very, very progressive. The wide range of
instrumentation, musical styles, and musical techniques (the kind
you learn in advanced music theory classes) that they incorporate
into their music is more extensive than any contemporary heavy
band around today. And they even do time-sig changes occasionally.

Now I am done. I just hate it when I hear/read poeple belittle
    Dream Theater or Savatage.

I'll write again in another 2 years :)

Yeah, and I guess if someone enjoys DT by farting all night long I should
just inhale and enjoy the aroma? Sorry, but pot (and any kind of smoke)
just plain smells disgusting and ruins MY enjoyment of the show. So, I
guess their enjoyment is worth more than my enjoyment? Their enjoyment is
worth increasing my risk of cancer? Their enjoyment is worth me possibly
getting a slight high and killing myself on the drive home? I've never done
any drugs, so my tolerance is very low. Sorry, but if they want to get

Time to set the flamethrowers aside for a few days.

Merry and peaceful Christmas for each and every jammer all around the
    globe.

Tons of thanks to DT (some of you are lurking anyway) for giving us good
vibes throughout the year '96. You guys kick butt.

For the remaining days before X-mas, everyone be well. Santa's elves are
watching you... I just wonder how much do they get paid for that sort of

    Jammers,
Whow, relax already. It was only a little joke - humor you know.
Seriously, I didn't mean to offend anybody, I just had a piont to make.
So, I did, the same way most of you do. I guess as a new jammer I was
just surprised by the jam's content. From now on, I'll only post if it's
directly DT related. By the way, I'm still looking for info about
    obtaining "Lords of Sound."

Andy, congrats on your new amp purchase! To sort of answer your question, John Myung uses D'addario bass strings. Given my experience with D'addario, I don't think they offer a stainless set, so by default, I would guess that he uses roundwound nickels. IMHO the best choice of bright, snappy tone vs. wear-and-tear on your frets. My personal choice is D'addario Slow Wound bass strings. One of the truest, most consistant strings I have found. Hope this helps.

    Happy Holidays!

Seems like I counted those jams wrong yesterday that I went=20 through then. There were 30 of them instead of 20. No wonder it took me so long to go thru them !! Seems like I'm not the only one getting behind on them. Just too much of them ! To that guy who complained about the non-DT stuff in the jams, this probably isn=B4t your thing. I know it can be a pain in the butt sometimes to go through these, but I also enjoy reading=20 others stories in here 'cos they're like "family" if you know what I mean. I know I enjoy beeing among ppl who are in2 the same things as I am. And we should stick together. Besides, you don't have to check your mail every day..but then you'll end up just like me, having 40 messages,ha ! Btw, does ANYONE have any RUSH bootlegs ? I just wet my pants when I noticed I don't have any from them, so goddammit gimme some !!!!:):) I'm also looking for all kinds of things from Maraya(formerly Wicked Maraya, but u know that doncha) !) HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY WHO'S GOIN' TO WORK ON SAT. TO THROW THOSE FCKN X-MAS POSTCARDS AN' THEN STRAIGHT TO BED JUST TO NOTICE IT'S SUNDAY AND I HAVE TO GO 2 WORK THE NEXT DAY JUST TO NOTICE ONE MORE LOUZY DAY THAT I GET HOME AT 6 PM TOTALLY WORN OFF.. DONCHA JUZT LUUUUUUV CHRISTHSSHHSSMASSHHHSSSYAMMIE!!!! x-mas greetings from your braintumour SATU AND like I haven't had enuff of waking up at 4 am..
