Nice idea, but I need as much new DT as possible ASAP. If they have a 30
minute song, I have to hear it. :)

They almost maxed out a CD with Awake and with Metallica's load lasting
78:59, there's probably a mastering plant that can get near 90. Or maybe
they can get a song or two on a movie soundtrack or something.

I personally expect different interpretations of parts when a new member
steps into a band! It's IMHO, boring if a new member just plays the parts
    note-for-note.

I don't doubt that the rest of the band told him, "do what you want with
those sections," as a measure of faith in him as a full member of the band,
and not just some hired hand. While I wasn't at the recent shows, Derek's
been inserting his personality into the keyboard parts whenever I had the
pleasure to hear his interpretations of KevMo's parts - like that one synth
lead sound of his, which I think is quite unique and identifiable. It's
almost like a cross between a classic analog synth, Van Halen's "Brown
Sound," Holdsworth's "liquid" guitar, and a saxophone.

Hell, you can't blame Derek for doing it at all either. We all have
different styled of playing. Derek's is jazzier than KevMo's
classical style. I'd get really bored playing someone else's crap
all night, so I'd rewrite it to fit my style, too. When I learn DT
songs on my keyboard, I don't try to learn them note for note, I just
try to make them sound as close to the original, yet allow them to
fit my style of playing (which is more of a fluid classical style
like Kev's anyway, more like Yanni's, I'm rambling...) I really
can't wait to hear what Derek does on this new album. This is where
you'll all get to see how good the guy REALLY is. (Some of you
already have, you *insert poitive/negative collective noun here*)

C'mon guys! Any song by Metallica would sound great if it was
covered by Dream Theater, but isn't this a little bit greedy? No offense,
please. I mean after all, they just did "Damage Inc." (One of the
heaviest/fastest/best Metallica songs of all time) on the fan club CD and it
thoroughly kicked ass. Do we really need another? Should we even ask, or
should we just wait and see what DT cooks up for us in the future? They've
been very good to us recently, and we shouldn't get greedy with 'em (my
    opinion).
Don't get me wrong, though, I would love to hear DT do any Metallica
song because in my opinion they're all great songs, but if they never do, I
won't be upset. Dream Theater has given us some of the greatest music of
our time and they will probably continue to do so for many years to come.
    I'm just thankful for that.
On a side note, if you get a chance to see Gary Hoey any time soon,
go do it. I just got back from his show here in Phoenix and he's simply
    amazing live.

There are CDs that go over the 80 minute (approx.) limit, but those
CDs cost a lot of money. I remember an interview w/ Kirk Hammett of
Metallica somewhere where he said that they tried to put one more song on
Load or extend a song or something, but it turned out to be about 82 minutes
or so total. That would've made them use the different type of CDs, but
that those CDs cost about $100 a piece. He said that he know's Metallica
fans are loyal, but making them pay $100 for an extra 3 minutes of metal was
    kinda rediculous. No shit, Kirk.

Do you really want to see DT on a movie soundtrack?

i agree about the DT statement. but just to warn you... metallica
was brought up in this fashion a few months back and it turned this
list into an ugly war zone. it got so bad that skadz had to step in

            Not again. Please, NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!

Isn't this whole "Metallica sold out, Metallica sold out" bullshit
just a little bit old? It's like beating a dead horse. If you don't like
newer Metallica material, fine. Don't listen to it, but respect the fact
that some others around you (especially here on a music forum like this) do
like their stuff. There are some bands covered here on the 'jam that I
could care less about, but I keep my big mouth shut about what I think of
them because I don't want to offend someone else who might think the world
    of a band I can't stand. It's a respect thing.
Dream Theater's music is similar to Metallica's in many regards, and
they even list them as a major influence if I'm not mistaken. So, why
should we not talk about them?
While this is a Dream Theater mailing list, I am quite hapy that
it's not strictly regulated by Skadz. He seems like a very nice guy and he
lets us do basically what we want to on this list. If you, by chance don't
like that, may I recommend the "Voices" mailing list?
I think Lars Ulrich said it best when he was asked if Metallica sold
    out,

"Yeah, we 'sell-out' every arena we play."

    Later all,

Peace be with you and God bless,

I have been reading with some interest the ramblings of members of the fan
club, in regards to the xmas cd.:

    >looks like that you have missed out. IMO if your only reason for
    >joining is to get the CD you are doing it for the wrong reason, and I
    >hope you don't get one. This is not a flame, just an opinion.

And also some of the comments from non-members:

    >Obviously you did not read my post *carefully* because I said that I had
    heard that
    >joining the club wasn't worth the money. A lot of ppl around here said
    that
    >there wasn't enough substance to the club, and that it always said it
    would
    >do stuff it never did. I hope that it IS worth it however because DT
    rocks.

I am assuming here that this is refering to the 'old' fan club set-up that
I took over from in April last year? Which I have to agree was in an
absolutely disgraceful state. I hope that people who are members have seen
a vast improvement in things over the last 8 months, and that they are
getting their stuff through? It has taken time to sort this shit out and
set things straight, but we are getting there, so hold tight.

Finally, if you are not signed up yet (why not?), you can still join and
have a very good chance of picking up the xmas cd, as there are some
    left!!!!! First come first served!

Anyway, seasons greetings and best wishes to everyone (FC members and non
members alike), and here's to a big '97 for the band.

    Cheers,

brent allman and chris ingles were there (you know, from shadow

brendt, the drums for the new album are done. when he comes back to the
area (he's going down to dallas for the new year) the rest of the album
will be put into place. both guys were down to earth and _very_ cool to
hang with. brendt also had some fun memories of the working man sessions
    (which were highly interesting!@)

Mr I is on the video but the band played to a backing tape. Omly Anderson'svocals are live. Yep, even back in '68 it was happening.

This weekend I was watching a tape of *The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus* that was recently shown (for the first time in about 18 years) on VH-1. Anyway, one of the groups that appeared in this 1968 docuvideo was a very early *Jethro Tull*. IA had a good mass of red hair/beard. The song they played was *Song for Jeffrey* which was on their first album. The most interesting item, though, was the guitarist. Martin Barre, the long-time JT axe-man didn't appear with the band until the second album; a guitarist named Mick Abrams (or similar I believe) was on album one. The guitarist that played with JT on the video was left-handed, but I didn't pay much attention until the credits, when I saw that the guitarist was none other than *Tony Iommi*, the heart & soul of *Black Sabbath*. I went back and re-viewed that portion, and sure 'nuf it was him. It was hard to tell since he was wearing a wide-brimmed hat with his head tilted forward slightly; but yes it was him, sporting his trademark black mustache even way back then. The guitar part was a bit different then you might be used to hearing TI play: *Song for Jeffrey* is mostly slide guitar.
