    Hi

Well, it's December 30 as I write this, and I've decided to just blather on
about my year, how it's been changed forever due to a whim...

    Let me elaborate...

Picture this: It is late March (maybe very early April - the first Sunday
after this year's Academy Awards) and I have decided to see the Italian film
'Il Postino'. As I'm walking to the cinema I decide to pop into a music store.

I have been thinking of buying a Queensryche cd. I haven't heard them in
about 3 or 4 years, but for some reason (them being mentioned on the Iron
Maiden newsgroup, perhaps) they're on my mind again.

    I buy Operation: Mindcrime.

I go and see the movie. It is brilliant, btw.

When I get home, I listen to the cd and I am instantly hooked, as I was 4
years before. I can't recall why I stopped listening to them.

The next day, I buy Empire. I hate it.

The next night, I listen to it again. I love it.

By the end of the month, I have all of their albums except the EP.

During this time, I've been browsing through the Queensryche newsgroup and
notice a few threads about a band called Dream Theater. DT vs. QR, etc. I
    decide to check them out.

I can't find any Dream Theater albums, however. I continue looking now and
    again.

Queensryche become the greatest band in the history of music.

One day, I spy a copy of 'Live at the Marquee' by DT. I have a listen to
it, having heard that their singer is better than Geoff Tate (who happens to
be the best singer in the history of music).

I'm not impressed, although I like the beginning of the first track,
    something called Metropolis.

Later that week I see a copy of 'A Change of Seasons'. I'm intrigued
because of the 23 minute song (I've never heard of such a thing) and the
covers. I decide to buy it.

    It's pretty cool.

Later, I buy 'Live at the Marquee'. Even cooler.

I see a copy of the 'Live in Tokyo' video, and I decide to buy it.

    Very cool.

    And so it snowballed.

During this time, I've heard about a band called Rush. I'd heard of them
some years back, but had never heard them. I pick up a copy of Exit...
Stage Left and have a listen to it.

The music is ok, but the singer is a definate problem. I return it to the
    shelf.

    Cut forward about 5 months.

Now I own every Rush cd (except Chronicles) and they are my favourite band.
The following bands I own cds of - I had never heard of them this time last
    year:

    Dream Theater
    Galactic Cowboys
    Lemur Voice
    Savatage
    King Crimson

I'm still struggling with Yes (some of you will be familiar with this). I
currently own 5 Yes albums, and, of course, I'm still not sure I'm a fan.
    Give me time.

    So there you have it...

This time last year I was only listening to Iron Maiden, until my brother
moved out and took every cd with him. The only cd I had (apart from several
movie soundtrack albums) was the single for 'Suicide is Painless' by the
Manic Street Preachers (good single, btw).

It might not seem like much to the majority of you, but for me it's been a
pretty amazing year for me, musicwise. I've bought about 110 cds since
April, and I don't think it's going to stop in a hurry.

Thanks for indulging me, and I hope y'all have a Spiffy New Year!!

    Cheerio!!

    Spiff

Hi all, just subscribed. Very much looking forward to the new DT and wanted
to comment on the above-mentioned 'One Live Night'. I heard it about a year
and a half ago or so, maybe longer; it was before 'Dysfunctional' came out.
I immediately loved it, but could not see paying $30 for it (import to USA).
I am guessing that it has now been released domestically, because I found it
a few weeks ago for $13; a steal. It is well worth that much money.

Saw Dave Matthews Band (Finacee's favorite band) last night.

DMB had their usual great set.

I was impressed though by the opening act Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. I dont know how to describe this band jazz, fusion, prog... but they were really good. They constantly had this band member vs band member jamming battles. Those were interesting. Anyone else know about this band?

Klank's "Still Suffering" is awesome, IMO. Very Circle of Dust-ish, maybe because Klank is the guitarist of COD.

You can probably find the CD at your local Best Buy, or order it from there...

Well, this Poor mans Rush bullshit apparently got a rise out of a few of you all too. Basicly, we are dealing with an uneducated opinion from this schmuck of a "RUSH" fan. Actually, what kind of a Rush fan would say something like anyway. That guy probably was refering to the NMS list. So maybe this will get back to him somehow. Consider the hatchet burried. I also haven't told you all about what an avid KISS fan said to me once!!!.....but we'll let that one slide. Hey Will, keep your eyes peeled for any buzz about this on the NMS!!!!

If someone doesn't put IMO before their statements, does that mean it has to be a fact? I think we can all understand that he was (As I was) completely blown away by the power of the band "Angra". Just because a band impresses the hell out of you doesn't mean you can't still love other music. Symphony X tore the title of best band away from Fates Warning and Dream Theater, for me. That doesn't mean I don't still go nuts for Dream Theater... I'd still give a nad to see them play live around here again.

Actually, this is entirely possible. Working at Guitar Center I saw Steve Vai autographed Jem guitars come in used for $250. It's entirely feasible that someone was dumb enough to sell a JP for $300. Other possibilities are that the original owner needed money (debts, dates or drugs), the salesperson may be lying about how much he paid, may have a regular issue JP model, or may be full of shit entirely. If you want to make an offer, do this: have him bring the guitar somewhere where you can see it, and then you take a picture of it. Then scan the picture or send the picture to me or someone else that has all of them members' signatures on multiple objects, so we can verify that he didn't just scribble them on himself. The USRG guitars (what Carlos was talking about) are considered USA Custom guitars, and I believe the first JP guitars (Before the signature line was released) came out before the USRGs were available. Watch the LiT video again and see if you can spot the headstock of JP's guitar. USA Customs almost invariably say USA Custom in big letters on the headstock. I also have a few early pictures of him in guitar mags. I'll check those as well. Buy that guitar. Get the original JP guitar into the hands of a Jammer!

    Hello Jammers,

This is always a fun subject to explore. I usually describe Progressive music as the popular music of the late 1960s and early 1970s that fused different genres of music together like jazz/rock, psych/rock, and classical/rock. From this came a lot of other ideas and niches to be explored in music. Artists exploring different niches are progressive if they add new ideas to the music. Most of the prog-metal would be artists who fuse progressive rock influences with the influence of heavy metal so it is a bit of a second generation prog-category, so I think that is why it gets slagged quite a bit by the r.m.p newsgroup. I've always thought of Dream Theater as a band that explores the niche between early Yes and early Metallica, at least up to this point. Note that this is just my little theory, it is as valid as anyone else's description.

There is also a genre called "Progressive" music that came about in the 1980s which pre-dated the "alternative" label and incorporated bands like Elvis Costello, Thomas Dolby, The Talking Heads, The Cure, New Order, and bands like that. They were suppose to be an extention of the processed pop that existed in the 1980s and more inventive.

    Happy New Year!

    Mike

Just wanted to reply to a few things after catching up on my jams after Christmas. Sorry some of this is old by now. 1) Regarding the discussions on maximum CD length. When the music CD orginally came out it was capable of holding as much as 5 hours of music!!! Records companies soon saw the lost revenue that this would mean and CD's were time limited to encourage double CD sets, so we would have to pay for them. May sound far fetched, I know, but I got this info from a friend who is a genius in digital technology and has been working in that field since before the CD first came out. 2) To the guy asking about Klank - Yes, I've heard of them (my understanding is they're actually one guy who writes and plays everything - ala NineInchNails). Anyway, their considered a hard core Christian band and are distrubited by Diamante. You can find it in many Christian music and book stores. Don't let the Christian lable fool anyone - this band rocks as do many Christian bands. 3) I just purchased my first Marillion CD (Made Again double CD) and really like it. However, I was surprised by how mellow it is - very progressive but not very, well Metal I guess. They're very good but not as much like DT as I hoped. Anyway, for those of you in the know, is this CD set representative of most Marillion? Or are there other CD's by them that are harder that I should check out? Feel free to Email privately.

    Happy New Year, ~Matt

    > I've seen 2 CD in the Marillion section (solo projects I guess). > The bands were called Arena and Iris. Can anybody give me information > about these two bands? Review or comments?

Arena is a band, formed by Marillion's first drummer, Mick Pointer. I've got their first album "Songs From The Lion's Cage", and it's pretty good (IMO). Very progressive, but not very original... If you like the old Marillion stuff, you'll probably love this album...

A while back, they released their 2nd CD "Pride" with another singer. I haven't picked it up (yet), so I can't comment on it...

"Crossing The Desert" by Iris is a project by Ian Mosley (drums) and Pete Trewavas (bass) from Marillion, along with a French guitarist called Sylvian Gouvernaire. It's a great instrumental album... Very progressive stuff... If Steve Rothery ever left Marillion, this guy should definately be considered as his replacement...

Btw, there will be at least four Marillion-related albums out, early next year :

Ice Cream Genius - Steve Hogarth (Marillion's singer) Best Of Both Worlds - Marillion (2CD compilation. Fish-Era and Hogy-Era) This Strange Engine - Marillion (15 minute title track!) Sunsets On Empire - Fish (ex-Marillion singer)

Mark Kelly, Marillion's keyboardist, is also working on a solo-album. He and Fish are both on the Marillion mailinglist, and even post to it every few weeks, or so !

Is anyone else on this list into Don Caballero? Great band... really weird, heavy, experimental instrumental stuff with lots of wacked out time sigs. Their drummer, Damon Che is phenomenal. They're on Touch & Go (Chicago indie) and have at least 2 full length albums out: _For Respect_ and _Don Caballero 2_, as well as several 7" singles. I highly recommend them, although if you have strong feelings about MELODY you might want to think twice. :) These guys definitely kick ass, but I know that dissonance and feedback aren't to everyone's liking.

Probably pointless to mention it...but I think they meant "put that person on a bike" as in, IMHO, "go fly a kite, you buncha over-rated talentless poseurs!!(with the exception of Sting, I guess)" Ya know, just keep them away from any instrument where they could do harm. This is really directed to Japanese jammers, but maybe someone else could help out as well. My question is: what kind of bootlegs are available in Japan? I mean myself and Andy Keegan were discussing how we hear about Japanese bootlegs, but never see them, so that raises the question "what's out there?"
