Hey I was just wondering if anybody has ever ordered any CD's from
"Tunnel Records". I am thinking of buying some CD's from them but I don't
know if they are trustworthy or not. I'm also interested in knowing also
about "The CD Cellar" and "That CD Place" , if anybody has dealt with them
please let me know. Has anyone heard about a DT boot called "Drifting Away"
that was recorded in Milwaukee '93 ? and also another boot called "Stranger
than Fiction". Anyways I would appreciate it if anybody can help me out.

DT a "poor man's Rush"?....NO WAY! Let me say that this guy is definitely
speaking for himself. I also receive the NMS(Rush)digest and this is not what
we/they think of DT. Just like you stated Phil, the Rush fans on this list
are openminded and do enjoy alot of different types of music/bands, DT is
    certainly one of them!

I've been a Rush fan since '77 and only discovered DT two years ago. But DT
excited me right away...on the merits of their OWN musicality. Fresh and
exciting. Maybe there are some similarities in certain aspects of their
music but hey, we all get our various influences from somewhere, even a
great band like Rush.(Mmmmm, weren't they once considered "a poor man's Led
    Zeppelin?")

BTW, hi fellow jammers, I'm just a lurker comin' in from the cold!
This is one fine list full of friendly posters and great info.

for some enlightening u2 music, check out "boy". it's real raw, but it's got
    a lot of the classics.

of course, check "war" as you acknowledged, and "unforgettable fire"- you can
see hints of the so-called "commercial" u2- some keys, more polished
recording, but it also has some amazing songs, including "bad", which dt
    themselves covered.

    hope that helps.

    Message-ID: <199612291845.MAA09811@mail1.socomm.net>

I have a question concerning the green, red, yellow, blue and black guitar
that JP uses on the Live in Tokyo video. First some background info. A guy
that works in a local music store (Memphis, TN) claims to own this exact
guitar. He claims that the guitar was a prize in a magazine (Guitar Player,
Guitar World or something) giveaway. The person that won the guitar came
into the store and sold it to the guy for $300. He says the guitar is
autographed by all of the members in the band. He says it is a prototype
USA custom with no serial number.

My question is this. Is his story true or even possible? Maybe someone
with connections to the band could find out. If it is true I might make him
    an offer.

    Thanks,

    Greetings to all-

Okay, I've wanted to bring this up for a while, and since we're kinda
slow these days, this looks like the perfect time. Those who've been on
this list for a while know that we've had our fair share of "What is the
definition of Prog?" discussions, and we've even had "Is _____ Prog?"
discussions. So tell me what you think about this: I saw a poster one
day at my school advertising a local band which was playing nearby. The
    sign read as follows:

            PAGE 13 - Progressive Rock

Imagine Lou Reed, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Andy Partridge, Sting,
John Belushi, Elvis Costello, the Cleavis Sisters, and Shecky Greene
all rolled into one person. Now imagine that person riding a bicycle.

Now my first impression was a profound "huh?" Sure I like some of these
artists, but never have I heard them mentioned in the same sentence as
Progressive Rock. I'm curious to see what you guys think about this, if
    anything.

Here's to a prosperous New Year,

    Scott Daugherty

with the discussion on "what is progressive music," i thought
this little ditty might do some help. it appeared a year ago on
PAPERLATE, the Genesis internet mailing list.

    Subject: Re: Prog???

    >How exactly do you define progressive rock?

I loved this reply which appeared in the Letters column in the September
    1993 issue of Keyboard magazine:

To be classified as prog rock, music must adhere to the following criteria:

    1. Songs can be no less than seven minutes in length, except in the case of
the prog rock/techno crossover, in which case five minutes is acceptable.

    2. Anything in 4/4 is immediately disqualified.

    3. The composition must contain at least three of the following
instruments: Mellotron, Hammond B-3, Moog Modular (Minimoog acceptable) or
any synth made before 1984 and weighing more than 100 lbs. Instruments must
also go out of tune after every third song.

    4. Performers must be able to play in several time signatures at once, with
no one part recognizable as a singable melody.

    5. A minimum of five key changes is required for each five minutes of music.

    7. Try to find a beat. If you can't, it's prog rock.

    8. If the composition wanders aimlessly, it's definitely either prog rock
    or Dave Stewart on painkillers.

    9. If anyone under the age of 30 likes it, it is not prog rock.

    10. And finally, if you can dance to it, it isn't prog rock.

    Steven W. Wagenheim
    Roselle, New Jersey

This response is from from the Letters column in the October 1993 issue of
    Keyboard:

If a band meets five or more of the following criteria, they're prog:

    1. At least one member uses Greek mythology or Zen koans as lyrics - at any
rate, nobody knows what the hell the singer is talking about.

    2. A typical song lasts longer than your average shower.

    3. On many songs, each musician plays in an entirely different meter and/or
    key.

    5. The keyboardist has more synthesizers than fingers.

    6. Bill Bruford was a drummer at some point.

    7. Their album covers depict strange animals crawling over weird geological
formations into which blue-pigmented children have carved stairways.

    8. They can sell out an arena and still have more lights on stage than
    people in the audience.

    9. Rolling Stone and Phil Collins would both rather burn alive than hear
    this group's latest album.

    Terrell Miller
    Norcross, Georgia

And I can't forget Keith Emerson's reply: "It is music that does progress.
It takes an idea and develops it, rather than just repeat it ... Progressive
music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down [and] the
other way around, and explores its potential."

Dave Stewart also wrote a reply to this question, but I haven't been able to
    unearth it yet.

I dont know..but it sounds unlikely..come on 300$! SIgned!! the guitar
alone is worth more than 1000! ..well maybe the winner was a
butthole...the thing that looks doubtful is that "USA custom" .. the
    guitar is an Ibanez Rg-somethign..

DREAM THEATER is a great group, but still there are similarities to Yes and to Rush, but who cares??, dont metallica, pantera, megadeth, slayer, anthrax etc... share same riffs?? some of them sound alike...and really, i havent heard a riff on dream theater that sounds very similar to any of rush, i havent heard all the songs from rush, but i know they say they sound the same because of the time signature they each play, but thats because they are playing kinda the same kind of music: progressive rock...

As far as the slowing down of the jams....it must be because of the Holiday season and all. So it looks like the new DT CD will be out in late spring early summer and the tour will start the summer of 1997. Can't wait. In the mean time I have my Dokken "One Live Night" to keep me company and my new Steve Vai video cassette. See ya all later!!!

Well gosh, seeing as how I got mentioned in three consecutive posts to the Jam, this must mean a few things: A) It's the Eighth Sign of the Apocalypse, B) I'm Somebody Now, and C) Mark Smeets is Dead Meet. :)

Regarding producers... Mike, I don't think it's all that much of a secret; I didn't see James Labrie look nervously over each shoulder before he told Wes/"Beavis" the answer (I think I prompted Wes to ask about producers, which elicited a grin and a "Are you on the Jam?" from James -- yea, it's the kinda question one of us net.geeks would ask. :))

Phil Carter mentioned attitudes on the Rush digest (The National Midnight Star) along with my occasional DT-supportive notes there. Attitudes on the NMS vary widely. He didn't mention that some diehard Rush fan gave me grief because I'd "rather stand 4-5 hours at a DT show and sit at a Rush show." (Never mind the fact that Atlanta's Omni is reserved seating and Birch Hell is general admission....I dared to compare the two bands in a public forum.)

Fact is, many Rush fans are like that; it's one reason why I seldom post to the NMS anymore, why I don't frequent their once-great IRC channel #p/g!, and why I sometimes get a little disgusted with that whole holier-than-thou attitude. --Not that DT fans are entirely free from it, but at least we have a sense of humility: "our" band isn't playing hockey arenas and getting acres of airplay even in such radio hellholes as Atlanta, GA, so we're kinda used to being the underdogs. :)

--Which leads me to my last observation, which parallels (sneaky FW reference) a few posts from others on the NMS regarding following Rush..... In the past thirteen months I've made two lengthy roadtrips and one brutal air-journey (http://www.crl.com/~vanyel/dt-lirr.html) to see Dream Theater, but moreover to meet other Ytsejammers and see friends I'd met before from the Jam. At all times during these pilgrimages the other DT fans I've met have been terrific. Heath provided crash space for a few nights and quite a few rides around Schlong Island. Heather (hmm, is Heath a subset of Heather? :)) was kind enough to provide a care-package for our long ride home three weekends ago. Others gave rides, or provided directions, and otherwise helped along the way. To sum up, DT fans are, with few exceptions, terrific examples of humanity.

It's the end of the year, time for a change of seasons and some final thoughts. I'll take this opportunity, then, to thank all of you who have helped make this online community one of the strongest and most pleasant online music fan groups I know of. I'm sure some of you have also felt that trememdous "sense of belonging" to a group that honestly cares about its members. Sure, this camaraderie is a bit stronger amongst the IRCers since we chat with eachother nearly every day, but each and every Ytsejammer helps in his/her own way toward making this a pleasant haven on the wild, raging Infobahn. Again, thanks to all of you, and may we all have a happy, healthy and prosperous 1997 -- especially the members of DT, for whom 'this could be the year.' :)

And a special thanks to the Jammer who sent me a surprise Christmas present all the way from Austria. Two words: I cried. :)

I was browsing Mike's webpage and I saw something there I had a question about. I could've just emailed Mike about it, but being a newlywed and all I'd think he migght be busy with other things ;)

    Here's what I saw:

** What is Dream Theater "Tapestry: A Cascade of Covers"???

Alas, this project has been called off. The band has requested that the Uncovered gig NOT be released as a bootleg. I was not told why, but we can reasonably guess that the material will see real release soon!!! Especially considering the Xmas CD contents, this seems even more likely. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What is the xmas CD? I was off the jam for a couple months so I didn't hear about this. Could someone please email me about this.
