What's this about meeting on the street? Heck, you could probably do
something as crazy as calling someone in Florida from all the way out in
Seattle, and, having never even met before, arrange a cool trip up the
East Coast to New York or something to see some DT Holiday Shows. I mean,
DT fans are just such unbelievably cool people that they actually DO this
sort of stuff, going above and beyond for their fellow fans. :)

(such delicious bait, now I must bite)

That's right. For everyone who wasn't at the holiday shows in December, JP did the backup vocals on "Voices." And when they started up "TSM," Petrucci removed his rather bulky jacket to reveal...two more arms!! That's right!! Petrucci is related to Goro!! That's how he played the normal rhythm parts with the solo AND the rhythm parts under the solo with accompaniments. It sure was neat watching him wield two acoustics at once.

Just kidding. Petrucci only has two arms. John Myung was playing the extra rhythm parts on "TSM" live...he's also the one with four arms...

---- > From: TTubbiola@aol.com > Subject: New Converts > > It just goes to show you, > > ALWAYS PLAY IT LOUD!!!

YEEEAH!! LOUD!! I WANNA HEAR IT LOUD!! RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES!!

(The above rule also applies to a card game called "Magic.")

---- > From: zebrowski steven <szebro1@gl.umbc.edu> > Subject: Letterman > > What songs could they play? Here are some TV-friendly possibilities: > > Innocence Faded > The Silent Man <new electric version> > Lie <radio/MTV edit> > To Live Forever

Bases covered. IF: major-key happy rock music, must include complex ending instrumental section to cancel out glam-rock label attached to rest of song. TSM: ballad-starter, closes as loud ruckuss with flying vocals. LIE: heavy sinister stuff, shows off the entire band. TLF: all-around great song, rated G(general audiences).

All songs in reasonable time durations, too. Hit Letterman with To Live Forever, then hit O'Brien later the same evening with LIE! Yeah! A one-two punch! And why stop there? Get Lorne Michaels into DT, then coax him into replacing an episode of Saturday Night Live with a 90-minute DT concert!! Something replaces SNL, AND a live telecast of a DT show! Kill two birds with one stone! :)

This is correct. Not to mention the Roadrunner Records ad... That's right, folks, Type O Negative and Sepultura have invaded the pages of Columbia House. Death, anyone? A friend of mine got his ACOS from Columbia House for $13... Slightly less than the Tower Records price back in October...

Look at it this way B.B... SNAFU.....Situation Normal All Fucked Up. All that crap that happened....is GOING to happen over and over again. Get used to it. I just saw Ozzy New Year's Eve...and his guitarist's pickup went out! He was up there flailing away in the middle of a solo and......NOTHING. About 20 seconds worth of nothing. The secret is to CONTINUE. Keep on trying. Part of becoming a working musician is LEARNING how to deal with those situations as gracefully as possible. Actually it sounds to me like you got your initiation into what being in a band is all about. If you continue gigging (which you should), this will just be another funny story to bore your friend with in a couple of years.

    Hi there,

Just a small mail from the Lowlands.

Mike multiple thanks for the WDATU CD. It's great. It seems every new project you bring out in the open got a higher standard when it concerns sound and booklets. Great front cover. Keep up the great and good work.

I have two small questions. One question for Mike Bahr and one common question concerning "Don't Look Past Me", which b.t.w. has become one of my favourite old DT tracks.

    1. I remember you promised us Under A Glass Moon, from the LatM show. Will it be on one of the next CD's?

    2. Does anybody know if James LaBrie has sung "Don't Look Past Me" in the past? a. If so does anybody have a copy of it? b. Or will it be on one of the next CD's of Mike? c. Or will there be an official release, B-side or what so ever, in the future?

    Thanks,

    Wilco Barg wbg@gesasdsc.nt.getronics.nl

Does anybody know if WDADU will be a remastered version when they re-release it? I just wish they would remix it...something about it is just not right. Thanks to Mike Bahr! I love these CD's a lot. The version of Ytse Jam on WDATU is the best I've ever heard. For anybody that loves Rush, I really recommend getting the CYGNUS CD from Mike...it really kicks ass. My favorites on there are...shit...every one. Thanks again, Mike.

    Hello again jammers!

Just wanted to share some more provoking thoughts from Sweden with You. There has been a discussion going on regarding what music DT-fans should like. My personal thoughts on this matter is that DT make music that is on such a level that anyone really appreaciating them should be able to digest a lot of different sorts of music of high quality.

Some examples could be rock music such as Peter Gabriel or Kate Bush, complex symphonic music such as Yes or King Crimson, of course the fantastic Frank Zappa (any DT-fan that have not heard One Size Fits All or Sleep Dirt - do it!), Mahavischnu Orchestra is a must, Italian opera, Sibelius is marvellous, and good quality Big Band music (e.g. Count Basie). Mark is absolutely right when he says that DT-fans are more than metalheads. My point is that quality music takes many forms - and a DT-fan should explore them all.

I do this by exchanging cassettes with a lot of people. I send a collection of different songs from many musical styles and they do the same in return. You always pick up on something. Anyone interested - mail me.

    A few comments:

About the "hidden" track on Carved in Stone, I dont' find it that annoying (the music part is great too.) But I have a question....

I assume one of the members in the band is on this list, and posted the information about "Thanksgiving Song." He said that the sounds were knocks on a door. Now, I know you WROTE the song and such, but I really have to question this. It sounds very much like a person chiseling away at stone. This would fit in with the album and such, and I believe it also fits in with "Thanksgiving." The two sides, Pilgrims and Indians were chiping away at the differences between them, and thus you hear the door opening and leading to "Thanksgiving." Does anyone else see this? :) Or am I just really dilusional? :)

Second...someone else said DT was by far the best songwriters in the Prog scene today. What about all their contemporaries like SG, FW, QR, and Magellan. And more over, have you heard the incredible work put out by some modern Sweedish and Italian Symphonic Progressive bands like Anglagard, Anekdoten, and Deux Ex Machina? Anekdoten is just as heavy as DT (but also has some great distorted Rick basslines :)) and has incredibly emotial/complex compositions.

First off, I'm here for ya man. I've had some bad gigs. My double bass pedal has broken a couple times, a couple drum heads have busted, and many times I've had to play whole gigs without hearing anyone else(especially gigs outside). Most people probably don't realize half your mistakes unless they've heard your music many times before. I've had times when my bands have played and all of a sudden all the electrical power strips short circuit. So there's me playing by myself. It's embarassing when the equipment goes out, but people understand and are cool with it. I expect the worst when I'm playing, so it's easier to cope with disaster. I hope that I made you feel better. Don't let it get to you. Secondly, I'm a loyal Galactic Cowboy fan. I saw them in SF last time. I live near Palo Alto, so if you have any other details it would be much appreciated. They are way underappreciated. They have a new album out soon on Metal Blade, I believe. Anyway, I think that we owe Mike B. and Brian a lot of gratitude for their work. Does anyone use NetChat on Netscape? I go into there from time to time under the Ytsejam topic and no one is there. Just confused.

First of all, I sympathize with you kal...all of us musicians have been through this terrible occurance. I have played shows with audiences ranging between 7 people and 17,000 people! Some of them were great, but there are always shows where everything seems to go wrong. DON'T LET THIS MAKE YOU NOT PLAY OUT AGAIN! That would be the worst mistake. Here is the best thing you can do:

Take what you have learned from this, and schedule a gig AS SOON AS POSSIBLE with your band again. I don't care if its at a damn shopping mall, just get out and play a gig like NOW! Now you know that, whenever or wherever you play, this can happen...this is NOT a one time thing. Have a list of things prepared to do in this event:

A song that can be done acoustically while someone fixes a problem

An extra amp, extra patch cord, extra strings, and borrow a buddies guitar, even if its a peice of junk, and have it tuned and ready to play

A band introduction, some jokes, tell the people where you'll be playing next, and best of all, walk up to the mic and be honest "folks, looks like everything is shittin the bed on us up here, but hang with us for a minute while Jon plays his favorite acoustic peice and we'll have it all straightened out"

You can even plan a "signal" to give to the bandmates for somone to go into a solo

DON'T GIVE UP! Here are a few things that have happened to me:

In front of 300 people: The bass player and singer got in a car accident on the way there - soltuion: 2 guitars and a drummer play Smokin in the Boys Room and made the audience come up and sing, and wasted enough time for the guys to arrive.

In front of 500 at a battle of the bands: we get on stage, the lights go out, and we get ready to start, but my guitar has no sound!! solution: I tell the drummer right away, and the other guiatr player does a cover intro/instrumental that we mess around with until I find the problem, was a bad cord, borrowed one from another band there.

In front of 17,000 people: we are on stage only 30 seconds into the first song, and both the rhythm guiatr and singer trip over a cable and fall on there ass at the same time!!!! HAA! 17,000 people!!! solution: the drummer goes into an "intro sounding" type beat, and I run over with some bottles of beer from the side of the stage and hand them to the guys who fell! people laugh, they get up, and we go into the song!

You have to learn to wing it man...I played professionally for 8 years, and no matter how much you practice and prepare; SHIT HAPPENS! It makes me wonder how a band like Dream Theater can always be so perfect...also makes me the SOME fans of DT that manage to find something wrong with a live performance, no matter how talented and together DT is live. "Oh, LaBries voice was crackin a little" or, "gee I think he missed that one 64th note coming back down off that arpeggiated broken chord scale"......don't let the Siskel and Eberts worry you..get out there and put on a show however you can!

    Dave (buster@ee.net)
