Mail sent to arastar.com is currently draining out of the queues. Once
things stabilize, I'll do the cutover (I was expecting to do this at 10pm
tonight but it looks like it won't really happen until tomorrow morning).

Send all new mail to ytsejam@ax.com (except requests which go to
ytsejam-request@ax.com) and it will queue up in anticipation
of the cutover (as it has been doing for the last few days). Once the
new list is up and running, Jason and Ryan may have a few things to share
    with you.

I'm not sure I would agree with those who think DT posters should be readily availible to the public. Part of what makes the posters so special is the fact that you have to work so hard to get one. In a strange way they would lose part of their meaning if you could walk in to your local grocery store to pick one up like you can some mass marketed bands like Green Day or Pearl Jam.

Good luck to all you poster hounds on your searches.

I not only saw this, but taped the interview and Lie vid. It's the only DT video I actually ever saw in rotation. I have seen some of the others (the ones on LiT), but Lie is the only one I ever saw aired. Just a quick question, What Maiden songs have DT covered? It seems as though i heard they've done Killers and The Trooper before, but that's all I've heard. Just curious. I may be making it to see Maiden in St. Louis in March. If anyone out there is planning on being there, let me know and we'll hook up. Later.

Okay, my luck (in music) anyway is just too damn good right now. Last time I posted, I had just found "Instrumental" in a local CD store. Well, yesterday I went to that same store and found....DT's "official" 1986 demo, which predates "Instrumental." Some of you hard-core collectors already have this, but for me it was pretty cool. This is the first time that I've actually heard Chris Collins on vocals. Wow!! This guy blows. I never thought I'd hear someone that would make Charlie sound line Labrie. This guy is hitting notes that are unnecessary and badly executed. Just my two cents (which is all I can afford since I paid $25 for a six song demo). Anyway, there is a little insert in the CD that might be of interest:

MAJESTY was formed in September of 1985. Guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung met up with drummer Mike Portnoy while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Petrucci and Myung had already played together with keyboardist Kevin Moore in their hometown of King's Park, Long Island. During their first semester at Berklee, Portnoy (from Long Beach, Long Island) Petrucci and Myung rehearsed daily and worked on original material. During December of 1985, while home for Christmas break, the trio was joined by Moore. MAJESTY spent the next several weeks at home writing and rehearsing until mid-January, 1986, when Petrucci, Portnoy, and Myung returned to Berklee, while Moore returned to Fredonia's School of Music. In March of 1986, vocalist Chris Collins joined the band to complete their line up. In order to pursue their musical career, no band member returned to school in the fall of 1986.

I guess that answers the question rasied earlier regarding whether or not any one in the band has a degree in Music. Anyway, at that same store, I picked up a the new Galactic Cowboys album "Machine Fish." I have to disagree with what some have said on the jam about this album. I think it rocks!!! Granted, it does remind me alot of of King's X's "Dogman," but in my opinion, this album rips "Dogman" to shreds. Song's like album-opener "Feel The Rage," "Psychotic Companion," "The Lens," "In A Lonely Room," "9th of June," and "Arrow" are unbeliveable! Even if you like GC a little bit, grab this album.

On one of the King's X homepages, there's a mention of a compilation album that was released, I believe, after 'Faith, Hope, Love' called 'Building Blox'. From the homepage's description of the disc, it sounds like I've got all of the material contained on it (I own all King's X CD's) so I'm not really concerned about getting it right now. I'm just curious if anyone out there really has one. And if so, where did they get it? And would they mind getting rid of it? Just wondering.

Can't WAIT for 'Ear Candy' to be released -- MARCH 12TH, I hear ;)

Food for thought: If everything goes as planned, I believe Rush and DT will release their new records at about the same time -- would anything be greater than a Rush-Dream Theater twin bill? What a show THAT would be, eh?

Also, are there any Saigon Kick or Extreme (with the possible exception of 'More Than Words') fans out there? I never hear them mentioned. Saigon Kick rocks, and Extreme's 'III Sides To Every Story' is one of my all-time favorite LP's. Rebuttal?

    I'm gone.

P.S. I'm trying to get into Fates Warning now, and, well, I ain't got one CD yet. I'm open to FW CD sales proposals from anyone who might want to dump theirs -- they are kind of hard to find around here.

I just wanted to give my quick $0.02 concerning GC's new album, titled "Machine Fish". It's surprisingly similar in style to "Space in Your Face", and I have to say I'm very pleased with it. I only bought it yesterday so I haven't had time for many listens, but my first impression is truly positive. Favourite tracks so far:

Feel the Rage - nice opener, a happy feeling Red Sun The Lens - less straightforward than most tracks.. has a nice feel Pattin' Yourself on the Back - again, a jolly vibe and nice singing Stress - damn groovy, despite the unimaginative lyrics

I definitely have to recommend this to each and everyone of you, it's out on Metal Blade Records. Those who already have it can share their opinions with me either on the list, if kbibb doesn't mind, or on private e-mail at antnyr@opal.utu.fi if you so choose.

One more thing - a bow to Ken Bibb for taking the time to moderate the list, it's been great lately, and also the idea of making two lists sounds very good.

Hope to hear from you soon, Antti

    Hello Jammers,

To address a couple of points:

[Damon spoke about echolyn] They have four albums and a video in release. As the World is their fourth album that is available in wide release on Sony records. The ealier albums were released on their Indie Label, Bridge Records and are title: echolyn, Suffocating the Bloom, ...and every Blossom. All three are out of print and Sony owns the rights to them, so the band cannot reprint them. The only chance to get them is to find a used copy or hope that a progressive music label buys the rights to them and releases them. The video is called Home Brew Bootleg Stew and the band still has a few copies left. I'll try to find the address, e-mail me personally if you want it. For the record echolyn has broken up, the drummer, guitarist/vocalist, and vocalist/bassist have formed a new band under a new name. The keyboard player Chris, is going to record a solo album, with their former bassist Tom, and Paul the drummer as two of many guest musicians. They also are going to release an EP with three new tracks that the band wrote before breaking up, a couple of B-sides that didn't make As the World, a couple of live songs from Progday 95. It is due out in April and will either be on Bridge Records or on Magna Carta (most likely).

[someone raved about Superior] I agree that this is one of the top metal bands around. I like them more than Ivanhoe and they have a great sound, chops, lyrics, and vocals. Their WWW site address is http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/~goebel/sup.html

Definitely one of the best prog-metal albums I have heard in a while. I also have a review on my Unsigned Bands page:

I plan to make some new sound files today for those interested.

    Hi all,

Well, with some discussion about DT and various substances, here's what I know:

At an in-store, James says he does not smoke (cigarettes, and I would guess pot as well) and he rarely drinks, although when he does, he does! (if ya know what I mean)

As to other members, I dunno about John P or John M, though I've never seen them smoke and I understand that John P doesn't drink very often (or at least to get smashed). However, both Mike and Derek smoke cigarettes - as to drugs, allow me to quote what Mike said in part of his diary (reprinted in I&W fanzine #6, page 20): "After the gig, do a little meet & greet, hop on the bus, smoke-up a little present from a friend & listen to the tape of tonight's show with Derek." I'll let you make up your mind on that one.

    Hello Jammers,

This will probably be my last post to the arastar address of the jam since it will be going down soon. Kudos to all who have held great conversation, new friends, business deals, the suppliers of humor during my 3 1/2 years of hanging around here.

[Magna Carta info] Someone asked about Magna Carta records. They are a progressive music label that is generally into supporting neo-prog music. IMO their best artists are Shadow Gallery, Magellan, and Discipline (whom they just signed).

    Quick descriptions:

Shadow Gallery: great piano, excellent symphonic metal, great vocals, lyrics are the only weak spot IMO.

Magellan: techno-metal-prog, kinda like if NiN was a prog band, and with calmer vocals, a bit like Yes. Lyrics are about historical events, takes a bit of time to get used to them, some are really bad, some work quite well.

Discipline: rock-prog-art, their first Indie released album Push and Profit was OK, I have a live video of them which is great. The guitarist is really impressive, Matt Parmeter's vocals are OK, kinda a torchered soul. They have well written songs and great lyrics, which the Magna Carta label could really use.

Other artists: Tempest (celtic folk rock), Cairo (ELP-Yes hybrid, great keyboard solos, kinda got old for me after a while), Enchant (Rush-Marillion style band, I think it is OK, Rush fans should enjoy it), World Trade (with Bill Sherwood - Yes live, kinda a bit like 1980s Yes).

    Tribute Albums:

The Moon Revisited - A remake of Dark Side of the Moon. Before buying this, go buy the Capitol Records remaster of the original, its far better than this tribute. The instrumentation is almost a straight copy of Floyd, many of the vocals are different and change the tone of the album, which IMO is one of the charms of Dark Side of the Moon. The one great track on the album is Magellan's version of Money. They put a different spin on the song, making it more mechanical, more like the listener is trapped in the grind of everyday life, living as an accountant.

Supper's Ready - A tribute to Genesis. I briefly heard it and it sounds OK. I can't really give a full review.

Tales From Yesterday - A tribute to Yes. This one I like, lots of altered variations of songs, Annie Haslam and Steve Howe on "Turn of the Century" are fantastic, Magellan does a version of "Don't Kill the Whale" that is IMo better than the original. Several other good versions by Patrick Moraz, Pete Banks, and Shadow Gallery.

To Cry You a Song - Jethro Tull Tribute, it is coming out shortly.

Not Yet Titled - Rush tribute, this is the one Mike Portnoy is playing on, Portnoy did mention La Villa Strangiato, so this can't be all bad. <grin>

    magcart@aol.com is their e-mail address.

I have full reviews of Shadow Gallery and Magellan on my Indie Label Bands Page

    http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~mbacko1/munsign.html

That is about all the info I have

BTW - I am looking for the catalog number of Images and Words - Live in Japan on Laserdisk... if anybody can help me out of this please e-mail me, I need it for the discography.

Yes, I know. I've got one more VERY SMALL plea for cooperation. I'm going for the throat this time. You all know that I'm working on my paper "Progressive Rock Vs. Thanks to all who have replied, the response was excellent, but you know, the more, the merrier, right? Now, for the clincher. Does anyone out in Ytse-Land have e-mail addresses of progressive rock record labels?? I've got Metal Blade's (mtlbldrcds@aol.com, featuring Fates Warning, Thought Industry, Atheist, Anacrusis....) and Magna Carta's (magcart@aol.com, featuring Cairo, Enchant, Shadow Gallery, Magellan, etc....). How about EastWest/Electra's, so I can get into the mind's of those at Dream Theater's label, or maybe, well... Another question: What other primary Progressive Rock record labels are out there? Remember, send responses to **rtgood@students.wisc.edu** 1) E-Mail addresses of Prog Rock labels 2) names of Prog Rock labels.

No, I thank you. And again, I thank you. N.P: Auditory Imagery, "Blizzard."

AS most of you may know, I am doing a progressive rock radio show on my station. I am interested in any CDs of profressive rock bands you may have. Come on all you bands on the Jam. You want airplay on a major college radio station in South Jersey. We have a 35 mile radius. A lot of people listen to us. I am sure somebody is going to hear you on my show. It's on Saturdays from noon to 3 on WMCX 88.9 F.M., in case you are in the area. If you have any CDs, (or very high-quality cassettes), send me email at s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu. If you want exposure, or you know of bands who need exposure, you should get in touch with me.
