Hey Sean, I was at this show!! Was on Halloween right?! This is a good
opportunity to share a little story with ya'll (a couple of you in IRC have
    heard a bit about this):

There I was at my first and only DT show so far, at the Newport in Columbus
OH. The place is packed wall to wall, and since the place has a few bars
throughout the building, I was drinking a few beers waiting for the band to
come on. They finally started and I was in awe! I was having the time of my
life, when the inevitable happened...after all the beer I had to piss. There
are a couple few thousand people in this joint, and only a handful of stalls
in the bathroom, naturally all full with a long waiting line....UGH! I held
it as long as I could.

I noticed to the side of the room was a doorway leading out into a narrow
empty dark alley. I can't hold it in anymore, so I sneak out the door and
start wizzin in the alley. Well, someone warned me about the security being
real pricks at the Newport, but I found out first hand this night. There I
was, mr.happy in hand fueling the gutters, when 2 security came out and
started making a big deal out of it like I was doing something terribly
wrong. They began to forcibly remove me from the show...I begged and
pleaded, and even offered them money to let me stay. No dice...they were
real assholes, made me get my girlfriend and kicked us both out. On the way
out they made a big scene to show off for all the people on the way out,
trying to make it seem like I was this bad person and they were rescuing the
    DT crowd from me.

Bottom line is, I only got to see 4 songs and got humiliated in public, all
because they don't have adequite urination facilities in this concert hall.:(
It made me want to do something really horrible to those guards. The rest of
the night was really depressing, and I almost wanted to cry thinking about
how long I had waited for that show, and how much of it I missed. What
little I did see was incredible though....sigh....hope they play somewhere
    close to here soon.

    Petrucci alert!!!

The latest issue of Guitar School (with Queen on the cover) has John
Petrucci "In The Listening Room." For those unaware, this is where they take a
guitarist and play a few different songs for him/her and get his/her reaction.
Anyway, it was a nice piece and they gave John some Maiden, Peter Gabriel, Al
DiMeola, and more cool stuff. However, this was the only highlight of the
magazine for me. If anyone with a DT web page bought this issue, how's about
posting the section for us tight-asses?

    hello.

dt opening for rush? it would be a disaster. i hope it never happens. and
    yeah, i am really serious.

    1) dt losing that "crowd connection" thing in an arena with 15-20,000 people
    would be bad. real bad.
    2) although there are plenty of rush fans who dig dt, i get the feeling that
some of the "more conservative" fans of rush would get homicidal, espeically,
if they are seen as the next "bearers of the torch".
    3) assuming they'd get a 45-60 minute set, what the hell would they play? the
covers medley? towhtsts (oops......they don't play old stuff anymore. damn)?
they'd be lucky if they can play more than 5 songs.
    4) dt and rush doing a jam together? ooh, how nice that would sound. but,
it'll never happen. maybe if they did, they'd probably play.....THE BEATLES?

i get the feeling that some people will hate me for this, but it just won't
work. period. just like the letterman thing.

and no, i'm not saying that dt should stay "underground" with their music. if
they break thru to the top, that would be great for them. they deserve it as
much (and maybe even more) than some bands. but it just wouldn't.

i am ready to defend myself if someone cares to disagree. if not, better.

re: the jp v. evh square-off
whatever happened to the days when people used to say, "aw man, jimi is the
greatest guitarist in the world!", and we usually agreed.

    <<sigh!>>

re: queen and extreme as prog
i once saw an article somewhere that mentioned queen as a prog band. "night
at the opera" sure helps their argument there.

    but extreme??
not that it matters to me (cause i don't really like them), but i
dunno......with songs like "get the funk out" and "more than words", i'd
scratch my head in puzzlement over that.

i could be wrong, and i admit i am a fuckup.

congratulations on the passage into fatherhood. may your son be the next bafu
vai (NO! KIDDING! but no diss to bafu, either). what i was trying to say was
my he bring you years of happiness and all the jazz (and prog). good luck.

    re: making fun of foreigners
umm, americans aren't made fun of when they try to speak other languages in
other countries?? hola! que pasa aqui? mire lo que ustedes bobos estan
    diciendo!!

umm, i always thought that the french tend to be asshole-ish to the americans
(not ALL of them, but you get my theme). and i'm sure anyone who's been to
japan has heard the term "gai-jin." of course, it's meant to be more
humorous, but i'm sure if you pissed someone off there, it wouldn't be a
    laughing matter.

    that is all.

Scott and all- I don't know about this whole influence deal. I do agree that bands who have influenced get influenced. But, I don't know about the whole "I hope Rush goes for a more Progressive Metal feel" or whatever Scott wrote. I know that's what I would WANT Rush to do, but I kind of doubt that's what Rush wants to do. It would be nice, however, wouldn't it Scott?? ; ' ) I would love to hear more stuff like Double Agent (I think that's the title) on their new one. "Where would you rather be? Anywhere. Jammers: Just wondering how many out there like Helloween or Gamma Ray???..Actually, I consider "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" to be in a progressive vein. For those who don't know, Gamma Ray was formed when Kai Hanson(the guitarist) left Helloween. I really love Gamma Ray. They are one of the best German Bands right now. Actually, their latest release "Land Of The Free" is a favorite amongst Gamma Ray fans. I just wish German metal this good would get U.S. releases, but luckily I was able to find it here in Colorado Springs in a downtown music store which specializes in progressive and obscure rock and metal, amongst other hard to get music. Anyway, I wouldn't have known about Gamma Ray's new release if it hadn't been for Carl Cadden_James of Shadow Gallery mentioning it. I don't know if Carl is still on Prodigy or not. I hadn't talked to him in a long time, but he mentioned Gamma Ray as currently being his favorite band and he recommended "Land Of The Free" to me. Anyway, just food for thought......DUSTY

As many of you know my nickname is derived from the J.R.R Tolkien character Gandalf. Many Progressive bands have found inspiration in his works. Rush has two songs with references to The Lord of The Rings ( LOTR for short ) they are " The Necromancer " ,and " Rivendell" . Echolyn has a song from one of their independant releases that mentions Long bottom leaf, a popular tobacco in LOTR. I am compiling a book of trivia questions that is based on LOTR and the Silmarillion. If any one feels that they can either stump or help me please E-mail me at FNGX01A@prodigy.com If my work gets published you will be thanked, and the first copy of the book can go to John Petrucci, who I know enjoyed the books a great deal. Thanks for any input.

Well Jim, hopefully I haven't mis-interpreted the intent and aura of your post, and that I've managed to respond accordingly.

Although I don't owe you an explanation for administering my post with such lack of "wit and intelligence" as you here-so imply, I felt compelled to respond to your post. It is so quaintly embellished with sarcasm, I thought for a minute that maybe you had never experienced the feeling of total exhiliration one takes on after listening to a Dream Theater track. Then I realized (or is that realiSed) that you, being a fellow jammer and Dream Theater fan, at one time must have at least gotten a chill or two down your spine as a result of listening to a DT composition.

Sometimes, rather than discussing the logistics of John Petrucci's modal guitar theory, the bands complex time signatures, or what color of socks each member of the Dream Theater unit wore at the last show; I like to just kick back, have a beer, pop in the DT CD and go YAAHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! At the time of my particular posting of "childish self induldgence", that is exactly what I had done. Hence the pointless, yet fulfilling outburst of "DT FUCKING RULES!"

To be quite honest Jim, if you were as concerned with the level of intellectual content in this newsletter as you seem, it occurs to me that you might have better spent your time constructing a much more amusing and informative post of your own. Instead, it appears that even you were at a loss, and as a result spewed forth a post of equally meaningless inventory as mine.

To me, the Ytsejam is part of the "fun" aspect in my life, not a regency level literary exam or philosophy course. I read and post here to relax, an activity which I am about to resume.

    Peace, Buster

PSS - do i seem a little tense today anyone? :)
