Wow, this best guitarist debate made me post right away. I'm not a big
VH fan, but both lists of top five guitarists I've seen are missing one
person, who I believe HAS TO BE in there: Steve Howe. Does anyone
agree? Thanks to the person who clarified my statements about Rush,
Marillion and Yes. I know tht Marillion did open for Rush, I actually
met someone in line at the Marillion show in Boston this summer who had
an unripped ticket for a Marillion/Rush show. And I know Yes would
never open for anyone either; on the Rush list, people were sending in
their dream openers. Some people said U2, REM; completely hypothetical.
As for the best drummers; someone put Mike ahead of Neil, which I think
is wrong. Neil, IMO, is the best ever, and although Mike is second, I
don't believe ANYONE can touch Neil. DT may be the best collection of
musicians (maybe not with Wakeman and Howe in Yes again), but only
because they have more musicians than Rush. Thanks.

Well, I'm not a parent (and, Ged willing, won't be for quite some time :), but here's my suggestion. I'm posting this to the Jam to see who agrees and who disagrees.

Expose your son to everything you can. The latest Newsweek had an article on how a child's brain develops. The basic jist of the article was that a child's brain is a sponge, and it is harder to learn brand new things the older a person gets. So, play Barney the Dinosaur *and* Barney Greenway. The more your child is exposed to, the more he'll learn, and the more he'll be able to learn later. And don't restrict yourself to just rock. Play classical, opera, and anything else you can stomach. A child's earliest experiences are the most formative.

Then again, I'm a computer scientist, not a psychologist. Maybe someone else can shed more light on this one.

solitude aeturnus? yes!! i saw them live with mercyful fate last year and they put on a great show. that vocalist has some of the coolest stage presence of anyone out there, plus some incredible range and timbre. i have their last 2 albums, but not the first one. naybody know where i can get it?

what? only 2 more albums for rush? this is a solemn moment indeed. i have to agree - the passing of the torch with d.t. would be incredible, but i also share in your reservations that it would be a much more impersonal experience as spectacualer as it might be. i would miss the intimacy of the smaller shows greatly.

i was thinking . . . if it's true that there's only one more studio and one more live album left to go for rush, then i think that some sort of retrospective box-set wouldn't be too far behind, would it? i mean, i know we have "chronicles", but "chronicles" is by no means very comprehensive. it could even have unreleased material that has accumulated over the years. i think this would kick ass. what do you think (although i think we are getting WAY ahead of ourselves here. or at least i am. ;)

    Hey,

To the Jammer who was asking about the second DT ACoS promo disc with the gold lettering on a black background...that particular disc is the advanced copy of ACoS. I got one of these almost two months before ACoS was released. The other promos, the same cover art and such, were available only about 2 weeks before the release.

I agree with the SA fan. These guys are really cool. I like the latest two releases, I just haven't seen the earlier ones. Their vocalist is definately different from the mainstream-doom type, he's like a super theatrical Geoff Tate. Their music employs different music scales. I'm no theory great, so I don't know what scales they are, but they are diverse. Good stuff. I suggest Beyond The Crimson Horizon. ___________

A few things... (I kept adding them so I didn't feel like keeping an actual count)

    (1) Who the hell this Fitipod Ibmmail guy that keeps complaining about the list?!? Like, wake up man, we heard you the first time! I think Ken or Skadz or whoever's in charge now should unsubscribe him! With a name like that, it must be some foreigner who accidentally subscribed and doesn't know how to unsubscribe ...

    (2)

    >* Recently someone was saying that DT never was invited to Letterman's show and >it was instead King Crimson that was booted. Well, I distinctly remember the >reaction on the 'Jam to KC's appearance on that show. They played "Dinosaur" >and a lot of people who didn't know about KC weren't impressed. But my point >is that KC did indeed appear on Dave's show. I still maintain that DT was >stiffed by the show and was never allowed to perform about a year ago...

Actually, King Crimson were on Conan O'Brien, *NOT* Letterman. Or at least, if they've been on Letterman any time in the past year and a half or so that I've been reading the list, not one person has mentioned it. They were, however on Conan's show a few months ago, they did play "Dinosaur" on it, and there was a reaction on the 'jam of a few people being unimpressed.

    So you're wrong. :)

    (3) Hockey rules! At the skills competition before the all-star game at the Fleet Center, they were playing Joe Satriani stuff in the background over the arena's PA system for the *ENTIRE* thing almost! I couldn't believe it, at first I thought it might have been added by the TV station that was broadcasting it because the sound was pretty clear, just soft in the background, but it was indeed over the PA.

I don't know if you deprived folks down in the US got to see the skills competition (I know FOX didn't show it, but I don't get ESPN or ESPN2 up here), so I thought I'd mention it. I thought it was kinda cool to see them playing some good music - at Maple Leaf Gardens, they're always playing top 40 shit like Green day, Offspring, Alanis Morisset, etc., and the usual jock-rock (there's only one jock-rock song I like, and that's the "da-na na-na-na na ... <HEY!> ... na na-na-na" one, since that brings back memories of those 2 years when the Pens - my second favourite team - won the cup). Anyway, it wasn't DT (though I know I've heard Rush a couple times), but it's a start.

Anyway, it really pisses me off. Maybe the whole point is to play shitty music so that the players get pissed off and frustrated and want to go and tear the other team apart. I know that's what I would feel like doing if they started playing Green Day at one of my games when I hopped onto the ice.

"I knew we were in trouble when before the game one of the players said `I hate this song, we always lose when I hear this song', and that song was the national anthem" - Harry Neale.

    >* Did anyone on the list ever get to go to that Molson Ice concert up in >Tachtin-upchuk, Anarctica where Metallica performed for the first time in >years? This was several months ago of course. (Actually I'm assuming this is >the first time in years, but I could be wrong...) Did anyone catch the >setlist? Was any new stuff played? Any new direction they might be going in?

I didn't go (geez, are you nuts?! It's already cold enough up here in Toronto), but CBC had a one hour special on the show. It only showed a few minutes of clips of the band playing, and it probably wasn't anything people down in the US would be too intersted in (so I didn't record it). Most of it was focused on the effect something like that would have on such a small town in the middle of nowhere.

It was Metallica's first performance in about a year I think. It happened in the summer, and the Simmering Shit (? - don't ask, I don't know where that came from) tour was the summer before. Anyway, it seems like something's really weird when a publicly funded broadcasting system starts doing shows about Metallica concerts.

Mike Backof sez: >> Someone on a.m.r newsgroup posted that they called Atlantic and the label confirmed that this studio album and one live album after it will be the end of Rush. Geddy wants to wrap up this part of his life and spend time with his family. So all of you fans of Rush and guys who gave up on them because of the quality of recent albums come out for old time's sack on this tour. It would be a great way to end the career of Rush to go out with Dream Theater opening and maybe if Dream Theater is still touring with them for the whole tour, the DT guys could play a duet with Rush at their last show. A "passing of the torch" so to speak. All of them could get on stage and they could play La Villa Strangiato and --> into Learning to Live with Geddy and John Myung side by side, Petrucci/ Lifeson trading licks, Neil and Mike on double kits, Derek on keys, and James LaBrie wailing away as fireworks launch into the sky. Freakin awesome sight that would be. OK, back to reality.<<

Just to clarify: I emailed the fellow who posted about contacting Anthem, etc, etc. I too thought that this sounded like a legit post so I *had* to ask, just to make sure. I turns out that the post was bogus and the reason why he posted it was cuz he was so sick and tired of all the Rush-breakup rumors that are beginning to circulate. I wish he would've been a little more sarcastic in his post so that we would know that it was BS, but he didn't. Ahh well, at least I don't have to worry 'bout my favorite group ending after the next album (whew!!) BTW, I do recall reading somewhere on the 'Net (from what sounded legit) that Rush just signed a new contract for at least 3 albums. Alex himself also said (when asked how many albums were left in Rush) that they had somewhere between 2 and 20 albums left. With the band feeling that they are tighter than they have been for some time (and more enthusized for that matter), I don't see them ending it for a while yet.

However, I do admit that Mike's idea for the final DT/Rush show (if it were to happen) sounds like a killer idea (Rush 'n' DT doing La Villa into LTL) - they just better make sure all the DT and Rush fans will be able to get it on a B-side or something. The only two drawbacks I see to DT opening for Rush are (1) We won't be able to get as close to DT as we would if they headlined their own shows at smaller venues (I know that was already mentioned) and (2) DT will probably play a shorter set - somewhere between 45 and 60 min - I just can't see Rush letting them play 90 or 120 minutes (though that would be killer). OTOH, this *may* mean that Rush may be more accessible since many of us have had some contact with DT in the past and when we approach DT's members (before or after the show) *maybe* Alex, Ged or Neil would be with them - here's hoping. Anyway, I welcome a DT/Rush tour - my two faves!!

Oh and Mike Bahr said Alex and Ged both like DT - *please* tell us more!! I'm sure there are plenty of us who'd love to hear what exactly they think of our beloved DT. And one last thing - wouldn't it be great if DT was one of Rush's next big influences? I mean lately bands like AIC, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (PJ and SG are confirmed Rush fans) have had quite an influence on Rush, so how 'bout another Rush-influenced band? I think Rush should head into more of a prog-metal vein in the future, but I guess that remains to be seen.

Sorry about the long post, but I got to say what I wanted to.

A bunch of people have been posting about who they consider the greatest guitarists. However, they are not labeling the men on their lists such as JP and EVH as rock guitarists. I don't think these guys consider themselves great flamenco or acoustic finger style players. These guys cant possibly compete in other genre such as jazz with Al DiMeola or John McLaughlin. (If you think JP has a sick picking style, you haven't seen shit until youv'e seen these guys. Don't forget classical with guys such as Eliot Fisk. I saw him live at a recital in the front row. It took three weeks for me to pull my jaw back into place. What about Leo Kottke or Michael Hedges? This is why all of the polls in magazines ( actually, let me correct that- Guitar Player, because its the only magazine that prints intelligent articles anymore) have different genre for their lists. If you want to name a list of the five best guitarists, take a broader look first at what is out there. I've found that although there are amazing players in rock such as JP and Vai, The best guitarists are elsewhere.

When I would try to speak Spanish I was ALWAYS laughed at. You dare not laugh though if a person from another country speaks broken English or you'll be labeled a racist. Why is it ALL Americans? are ALL Italians in the Mob? Are ALL Asians bad drivers? Are ALL Jewish people Accountants? I don't think so. Some might consider that a tad racist. Dream Theater opening for Rush? I have mixed feelings about that. We would get to see two of the best bands in the world together on the same bill; that would be good. We wouldn't be able to get too close to the stage because of reserved seating and DT would be limited to a :50 set (ACos, TTT, Metropolis, PMU and goodnight) that would not be good.

That's funny...on the plane back from Houston today, I waas reading a one "Guitar School" magazine. I bought it becauseit said John Petrucci on the front. Turns out, what they did was play him music without telling him what it was, and to see what he said/thought about it. They played him some Rite of Strings recording. At first, he said that it sounded like Al D., but he said it wasn't his style. He was really surprised when they told him that it WAS Al.

THAT'S what's wrong with today's society! Not enough Dream Theater fans (<--take a gulp)! So, instead of staying at home and trying to figure out how in hell John Petrucci plays the Erotomania solo, they're out shooting people. I think Dream Theater should be played in the nurseries at all the hospitals...soon as you snip that umbilical cord, GET A WALKMAN LOADED WITH I&W ON THAT CHILD!!!!! :-) Whoa...got a lil' carried away there. I guess I won't be the littlest jammer anymore. :-)

Ben Laussade I am a congressman. I make $82,000 dollars a year. If you don't believe me...you can even ask me!

    >Yours, >Sean Haider > Hey Sean, I was at this show!! Was on Halloween right?! This is a good opportunity to share a little story with ya'll (a couple of you in IRC have heard a bit about this):

There I was at my first and only DT show so far, at the Newport in Columbus OH. The place is packed wall to wall, and since the place has a few bars throughout the building, I was drinking a few beers waiting for the band to come on. They finally started and I was in awe! I was having the time of my life, when the inevitable happened...after all the beer I had to piss. There are a couple few thousand people in this joint, and only a handful of stalls in the bathroom, naturally all full with a long waiting line....UGH! I held it as long as I could.

I noticed to the side of the room was a doorway leading out into a narrow empty dark alley. I can't hold it in anymore, so I sneak out the door and start wizzin in the alley. Well, someone warned me about the security being real pricks at the Newport, but I found out first hand this night. There I was, mr.happy in hand fueling the gutters, when 2 security came out and started making a big deal out of it like I was doing something terribly wrong. They began to forcibly remove me from the show...I begged and pleaded, and even offered them money to let me stay. No dice...they were real assholes, made me get my girlfriend and kicked us both out. On the way out they made a big scene to show off for all the people on the way out, trying to make it seem like I was this bad person and they were rescuing the DT crowd from me.

Bottom line is, I only got to see 4 songs and got humiliated in public, all because they don't have adequite urination facilities in this concert hall.:( It made me want to do something really horrible to those guards. The rest of the night was really depressing, and I almost wanted to cry thinking about how long I had waited for that show, and how much of it I missed. What little I did see was incredible though....sigh....hope they play somewhere close to here soon.
