Okay, I'll be the first to admit that JP is a top-notch guitar player -- =
possibly one of the top 10 in the world -- but to say that ANYONE kicks =
Eddie Van Halen's ass? I think the guy that submitted this thoughtless, =
RIDICULOUS statement has been sampling a bit too much of Mike Bahr's =
"Three Wise Men" recipe. I don't care who you are, or who you like -- NO =
ONE kicks Eddie Van Halen's ass, NO ONE. I mean, come on. Let's show a =
little more respect for the still-reigning Guitar God, okay? The only =
way he'll ever get his butt kicked is when he dies and has to take on =
God himself (and, even then, I think he'd make his opponent sweat a =
little ;) ). And, I think JP would be the first to agree with me -- =
though, again, I fully agree that JP is an excellent guitarist and =
receives far less recognition than he deserves. He's definitely in MY =
    Top 5 (1. Eddie Van Halen - 2. John Petrucci - 3. Nuno Bettencourt - 4. =
Ty Tabor - 5. Steve Vai -- of course, this is in no particular order)=20
Now, as for Neal Schon -- I don't know about his eating habits, but =
great as he is, and he is, I think he does indeed take a back seat to =
    JP.
Drummers, on the other hand -- PORTNOY RULES!!! My Top 3 (1. Mike =
Portnoy - 2. Neil Peart - 3. Alex Van Halen -- again, no particular =
    order)

    Steve from Tucson

    Hello Jammers,

            just a couple of thoughts,

    1. DT & Rush together

Someone on a.m.r newsgroup posted that they called Atlantic and
the label confirmed that this studio album and one live album after it
will be the end of Rush. Geddy wants to wrap up this part of his life
and spend time with his family. So all of you fans of Rush and guys who
gave up on them because of the quality of recent albums come out for old
    time's sack on this tour.
It would be a great way to end the career of Rush to go out with
Dream Theater opening and maybe if Dream Theater is still touring with
them for the whole tour, the DT guys could play a duet with Rush at their
last show. A "passing of the torch" so to speak. All of them could get
on stage and they could play La Villa Strangiato and --> into Learning to
Live with Geddy and John Myung side by side, Petrucci/ Lifeson trading
licks, Neil and Mike on double kits, Derek on keys, and James LaBrie
wailing away as fireworks launch into the sky. Freakin awesome sight
that would be. OK, back to reality.

    2. Whoever came up with the DT drinking game list could be on the verge
of outdoing Bafu Vai. I expect Bafu to mount a comeback at any moment.

    Later,

    Mike

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! I'm not too sure if it was posted, but I wanted to mention
that John Petrucci appeared in the latest Guitar school magazine. He did
something like what Blind Melon did in GftPM back in Jan 1994 (the
Listening Room), except that John Petrucci had intellegent things to say
about the various bands. Well, just wanted to let you guys know!

    Jeff =)

P.S. Are you snickering at my name yet? =P

I've noticed something. When someone from a different country visits a
place like China or Japan and tries to speak their language, the Japanese
or the Chinese really respect that because they are making an effort to
communicate with them. However, when a foreigner comes to America and
tries to speak english, we make fun of them. Goes to show that Americans
have no respect for those who differ from us.

    Hello all--
Wow, my first post to the new jam! I just want to get something off my
chest about this DT and Rush tour talk.
I've only seem DT once (during Awake) and it was at the Newport in
Columbus, OH. It holds about 2,000 or so I think. Anyways, it was general
admission and I was in the front row in front of Myung the whole show. I'm
afraid that if DT tours with Rush we may not be able to get so close to the
gods. I think it's been fairly easy to meet the guys, too, but I'm not sure
about that if they were on this monster tour.
However, I guess I'm just being selfish. I suppose that DT would gain
a lot of new fans, so that's good.
            My opinion.

    Yours,
    Sean Haider

OK, I've been keeping this under my hat for over 8 months now, and now
it's time to share the good news with everyone...

My wife Heather and I are expecting our first child any day now. Her official
due date is actually March 8th, but she says she can sense the baby coming
very, very soon. False labor has become almost an everyday occurrence, and
she feels "different" all of a sudden... so it sounds like the little guy
is getting ready to make his big appearance. :)

Yes, it is a boy, and his name is Alexander Evan Hochberg. I can't describe
to you all how excited I am that I'm about to become a daddy! When the
big day comes, I will of course announce the good news here on the 'jam.

DTC: Even though my wife doesn't much care for DT's music, she knows they're
my all-time favorite band, and she actually does appreciate their originality
and stellar musicianship (she's simply turned off my most heavy music, that's
all). Anyway, I'm pleased to announce that I am officially "allowed" to
expose our son to DT, at a reasonably quiet volume level (of course), in the
car, on my way to and from the babysitter's house. ;) I consider this to be
quite a victory. I really want Alex to be exposed to a wide variety of
different styles from the get-go, and hopefully he'll develop a relatively
advanced understanding of music at an early age. I REFUSE to stunt his
artistic development by singing along with a godforsaken purple dinosaur
    24 hours a day. ;)

So I'm coming up with ideas for different mix tapes for the little guy
to listen to. I'm trying to be eclectic, but not TOO wild. In other words,
"challenging," but not overly wierd. Mr. Bungle is probably a little too
freaky. Enya juxtaposed with Napalm Death would also be a no-no. :)
Any suggestions? Surely there must be some other parents on the 'jam who
could offer some advice, particularly in the jazz and "classic" prog
departments. I'm no slouch in the DJ'ing department, mind you, but any
suggestions you feel like passing along would certainly be all the more
    helpful. Thanks!

    Hangin' on by a thread,

    Jeff -- hochbj@sage.edu

In my opinion, Eddie WAS a guitar god in his prime, but he has been doing
the same thing for 10 years. He needs to do something different. I will
admit that Balance was a slight change for VH but he still is doing the
tap-hammer-roll routine. Check out guitar tabs and see for yourself.
Look at the difference between JP's solos and EV's. And i have to
disagree with your top 5. I dont like top five lists on the jam but i
really have to put this one down. (1. JP 2. Satriani 3. Malmsteen 4. Vai
    5. Stevie Blaze) I've had the EV vs. every other guitarist on the planet
with my friend Brian who is a die hard VH fan. It just goes in
circles.....he uses arguements like....who's more popular or who's been
around longer.....and i say so? Popularity doesnt mean shit if you
are good or not. Popularity means you won the political game in the
music business. Come on now. It's time for Eddie to do something new.

    Jammers:
I don't consider Solitude Aeturnus progressive, although their last album
starts to lean towards it, I still consider these guys one of the best doom
metal bands out there right now. I especially like the vocalist and love
their haunting melodies. "The Darkest Hour" is my favorite, followed by
"Into The Depths of Sorrow". Alot of you may not have heard of these guys
before, because they are sometimes hard to find in the record store, but I
do recommend picking up either of the above. It's nice to hear doom metal
with a good vocalist for a change!
    Take Care.....Dusty

as "prgressive"? are you saying that you wouldn't like them if you
COULDN'T describe them as progressive? does it really matter? sorry no

On the old jam there was some discussion about a Journey LP that was
Japan only. The album was released in 1980 and called "Dream After Dream." If
anyone is interested, I have a copy on Japanese Vinyl that I would be willing
to part with for trade or cash. Please email me if you're interested.

Here's all the good stuff, a second time. So far we are
on the way to 40 orders, but there is some ways to go, so
if you've been holding back, get those orders in!

    ----------DT SHIRTS INFO-----------
OK Shirt fans! It seems there is enough interest to test the waters
more for another shirt order. After speaking with the shirt company
about minimum orders, it looks like we need 50+ orders to make it
worthwhile. So, here's the info, please send in your requests for
shirts now, and if I see we're going to make the 50 mark, then I'll
then instruct everyone where to send the money, etc.

For news on Tank Tops, see below!

    Design ( front ):
Majesty symbol in white ink, with "Ytsejam" on top in script font,
and "INTERNET MAILING LIST" in small block letters beneath.

    Design ( back ):
Large white DREAM THEATER logo in white across the top, with
Let the Light Surround You across the bottom in greyish GLOW IN THE
    DARK ink.

This shirt is now being offered in FOREST GREEN, BLACK, MAROON, and
DARK NAVY. I cannot guarantee that this design will look good on
any color but black! (of course, "good" is completely subjective).

Sizes Available: M, Large, XL, XXL (+$1.50), XXXL (+$2.00).
Dark shirts tend to shrink more than light colors, so if you are on the
edge of a size, order accordingly!

Fill out this form and return it to jgiles@crl.com:

    Name:
    E-Mail Address:
    Mailing Address:

    Qty Size Color
    ---------------------------
    2 XL DK Navy

LEAVE NOTHING BLANK!!! All info is needed for me to properly take care
of everyone! Be sure to specify what color goes with what size, etc. if you
are ordering more than one shirt.

Shirt design can be previewed on a black shirt at:
    www.crl.com/~jgiles/shirts.html

Shirts at $14.00 each, which includes shippin the US and Canada. Add $4.00
for orders outside the US, such as Germany, UK, etc.

Let the fun begin!!! Questions, comments, orders, etc: jgiles@crl.com

MORE NEWS-- TANK TOPS! I will now offer Tank Tops for the coming summer
months! Black will be the only color available, and the
and the design will be the same, except that the
majesty logo and other left breast artwork will be in the center of the chest of the tank top. They will be $14.00 as well, and the same sizes will be
    available.

SHIRT ORDER DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 28th!!!

For what it's worth, Marillion did open for Rush some back in the mid 80s.
As a matter of fact, Mark Kelly (Marillion key player) told the Freaks-list
that they really enjoyed it and that the Rush guys were cool to 'em.

Also, I don't think Yes would open for anybody nowadays.
