This is absolutely fantastic. Let's just say that I am guilty of two
things right in a row and technically I should be passed out under the
table by now (please, try not to comment on that one!) Sounds like so
much fun that I almost (I won't though) want to jump off the wagon and
start drinking again...

PS Everyone should be able to spell Battaglia right. It's a good name, it
means something like "Warriors of Battle" in Italian.

Hi folks
Those of you eager to know what is in my CD player at the moment can skip to the
end of this post, but others of you may also be interested in the results of the
'Best Album of 95' poll that I conducted. A lot of the entries only got one vote
but what the hell, winning isn't everything. So here goes (not that the winner
is a real surprise).
1. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
2. Echolyn - As the World
3. Shadow Gallery - Carved in Stone
4. Savatage - Dead Winter Dead
King Crimson - Thrack
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
Anathema - The Silent Enigma
I didn't list the one-vote entries, but you may be interested to know that
Acoustic Dreams was one of them.
Thanks to all those who participated. And now for all the dypsomanic Jammers,
here are a couple of interesting little cocktails to help pass the time between
Jams. Note: these little beauties WILL damage your health and quite possibly
your wallet. If anybody drinks one of each and then throws up, please let me
know what colour the pavement pizza is:
The Urine Sample: 1/2 oz Sambuca, 1/2 oz Galiano (best served warm)
The Booger Shot: 1/2 oz Bailey's Irish Cream, 1/2 oz green Creme de Menth
The Bloody Booger Shot: 1/2 oz Bailey's Irish Cream, 1/2 oz green Creme de Menth
1/2 oz strawberry schnapps
Is anybody else out there still shocked by the news that Take That have broken
up - life suddenly seems so empty.
I'm still looking for information about the following bands, who can be
loosely associated with the Kyuss 'desert scene':
Solar Feast
Unsound
Zig-Zag Wanderers
All info gratefully received (if you haven't heard Kyuss yet, do yourselves a
big favour).
stay safe and happy listening

If you've been keeping up on your Progressive Trivia, some of you
should have heard of a group called Glass Hammer. I still have yet to hear
them, much less find a cd of theirs in the store, so I want to know HOW TO
FIND THEM! They have 2 cd's out, Journey of the Dunadan (I think that's
correct) and Perelandra. Their web page was great, but I don't believe it's
up and running any more. If anyony has anyinformation, post for all to see.
I'm super curious about this band. Thanks.

Hi Folks,
> Just wondering how many out there like Helloween or Gamma Ray???..
[rest of post deleted just to save a little space...]
Man you hit it right on the head. German power metal rules! The
stuff might not be as technical as DT but it is hard to match just for
raw energy. I agree with you about the new Gamma Ray "Land of the
Free", is it truly a masterpiece. I was lucky enough to be able to
see Gamma Ray this summer in Hamburg Germany. Even though DT is my
favorite band and I have seen them three times this Gamma Ray show was
the absolute best concert I have ever seen. Let me just say that
Germany is heavy metal heaven *grin*, I am sure some of the Deutsch
jammers will agree.
I have been trying to turn people on to German metal for a little
while now (right Scott?). I make compilation tapes for people all the
time and they love the stuff. Let me just mention some bands (not all
German but in the same vein) that fit this power metal genre: Blind
Guardian, Rage, Running Wild, Iced Earth, Vanden Plas, Scanner,
Stratovarius, Manowar. And many many more. Personally I like a lot of the
stuff because of the fantasy type lyrics (Blind Guardian are the
masters of this). Anyone interested in more about Blind Guardian
check out the BG homepage at:
http://lobelia.physics.wisc.edu/jbreitwe/music/bgmain.html
There are all kinds of cool pictures and stuff about BG here (I know
it is a shameless plug, oh well).
Lastly are there any jammers out there in Hamburg, Germany? Just
curious because I will be there all summer (actually for Spring break
as well) and I am always interested in meeting other DT fans. Just
drop me some e-mail.
Later,
Jason

It was always my understanding that Nicko was one of the last single-
bass drummers left in heavy music. Has he changed or was he so quick
with one foot that it appeared to *sound* like a double-bass? Dream Theater

And don't forget, if you know a foreign (here in the US, that's non-English :) language, be sure to speak it to your children. Some people seem to think that you have to wait until a kid is older to teach them a language. That's craziness. I know people who were spoken to in Greek and English and speak both perfectly without an accent. My mom didn't think it was a good idea with me so I never learned Greek despite Greek school. By the time your 7 - 10, you're not interested in learning another language.

Hello!

No, maybe I explained myself badly. The fact is, I listen to several kinds of music, but I tend to like more elaborated music, and this is one of the reasons why I like Extreme. And just because some of the songs tend to be elaborated in a sort of "progressive" way, I was wondering if they could be defined as a prog band. (I love Pornograffitti, that is definetly NOT progressive)
>> but extreme?? >> not that it matters to me (cause i don't really like them), but i >> dunno......with songs like "get the funk out" and "more than words", i'd >> scratch my head in puzzlement over that.

You're right! Extreme play different kinds of songs: some are simple, some are more challenging.
>Extreme has progressive overtones but is definitely NOT progressive.
>P.S. No, people, Extreme is definitely NOT a progressive rock band. They = >are just a good, solid, straight-ahead rock n' roll band, with a = >kick-ass guitarist and excellent writing -- impossible to compare to DT = >-- two completely different styles. DT is a band that explores more = >beyond the boundaries -- takes more chances with it's music and has a = >kick-ass guitarist, bassist, drummer, singer and, as far as I know, = >"dude-on-the-keys" -- and SUPERIOR writing. But I really dig both bands.
Well, you're right. I didn't want to state that Extreme's style is like DT's one. Just wanted to express that, even if they are a "straight-ahead rock n' roll band", they SOMETIMES develop their songs in original and challenging ways. And this was done against the rules of music market: they succeded with simple songs while, at least here in Italy, noone listens to III Sides.
Anyway, all right: they can't be generally defined as progressive.
