I see It only took about a week for someone to reply to an ENTIRE jam.
Maybe we should start some kind of betting pool to see how long it takes
before this ytsejam starts getting moderated too.
I want to get in on this Eddie vs. whoever thread. There was a time when
Eddie was one of the most exciting guitarists, but even he admitted in a 1993
interview that he's Doing the same things he was doing 15 years ago. Some of
the best guitar work I've ever heard is Bill Nelson, who was in a band in the
70's called Be Bop DeLuxe. They did a live album called 'Live! in the
Air-Age' that I think is one of the best live albums ever recorded because it
was a live album, not a remixed studio recording with audience track over it
a la KISS. Of course this is ONLY my opinion. If you disagree, ok by me.

Hey Guys!
I am now listening to the tapes of the Dec. Birch Hill show, and
I'll post a brief review about the general quality of the recording.
My initial impressions of the recording was that it was a bit
bass-heavy, like I've heard other people mention. But I found by the end of
the first song I was totally used to it! Besides, Dream Theater sounds best
bass-heavy!!! :) I was psyched that Brian decided to keep the whole Steven
Wright intro that was played before the concerts. James sounds awesome on
the Silent Man and I think the crowd noise is really cool, because it's
energetic and they sing in tune!!
I'm really impressed with the mix. Derek, who is sometimes drowned
out live is WAY up in the mix at times. By the way, anyone who still has
doubts about Derek should check out his solo in Scarred. I must say that
this is one of the best audience recordings I have heard in a long time.
Thank you Brian and my "father" Jason!
P.S.--Right now I'm listening to the part in the Silent Man where James
sings it up an octave. Wow...
Later all!

I have to say that the the DT opening for Rush possibility would be
awesome... first of all, even though it would lose the intimacy , I think
DT's music is more appropriate for larger venues because it's
so...so...so.... GRANDOISE! I personally could not imagine them plaing in
clubs after I heard I&W... until I saw and heard it.... but anyways imagine
this... right in the part in PMU when JL sings 'Watch the sparrow
falling(etc.)', right when the band comes again after the silence... BOOM!
one of those big light thingys that leave you seeing birdies for a year or
two... that would be awesome....
Besides that... it'd just be awesome seeing my 2 all-time favorite bands
playing togethter... and as for Rush fans freaking out on DT... remember
Primus opened for Rush once... did you hear that... PRIMUS! (not that I
don't like Primus... I love Primus)
Also I think ha=ving DT opening for them would have Rush on top o' their
chops and possibly play more from there progressive era...
which brings me to a curious thought... how would DT react when they meet
Rush (I don't know if they already did)- you know Bahr told us we should act
normal to DT when we see them... well let's just imagine a conversation
between JP and Alex...
would it be:
JP: Hey Alex, what's up, how' the family?
AL: Oh they're fine... how're the twins?
JP: 'Oh yuou know...growing'
-OR-
JP: Alex man your like the best guitar in the world.
Al: Thanxs man
JP: No I really mean it... you made me the guitarist I am today..
AL: Aw SHUCKS John, don't say that...
I'm sure it would be more like the first one because they're both very
down-to-earth kind o'guys, but you never know because after all... DT are
fans also..
all this from a guy who has only gone to one real concert in his life (Soda
Stereo for you fellow Latino-jammers) because no one good ever comes to Panama:(

well, i've been checking out a couple of mailing lists, namely the one for
alanis morissette and tori amos, and lemme tell ya, the ytsejam is a lot
better than those other jams.
ahh......how nice it is to find common ground on a mailing list.
not that the tori/alanis people were complete dolts (although some came
close), but umm, the topics here are quite more relevant.
i never really cared as to who tori last fucked. apparently, someone who
transcribed a new interview of hers did care. i didn't dig it. i don't really
care if she belives in god or is afraid of failure. they did.
it's nice that here we can talk about MUSIC. and not about who derek fucks
(or james, johns, or mike).
music is the bread and butter,
i won't even get into the alanis thing. that just sucked left sweaty
testicle.

re: extreme as prog
like i said, i may be wrong about my extreme observations. and yes, i am
aware of that really long thing on "3 sides."
i guess this relates to the "is nine inch nails progressive?" issue. i
shouldn't have really said anything about extreme since i know little of
them, but from what i did gather of them, i didin't think so.
that pat guy sure had a lot to say.
kevin was fired?? that's news to me.
this "rock pop and soul" class i'm ta'ing made my day today. they had to
submit a list of their top 5 bands, and we compiled them up. of course, the
beatles won, followed by the usuals like zeppelin, floyd, pearl jam, u2, dave
matthews (gimme a break!). but coming in at a strong number 39 was, you
guessed it, dream theater!!! 7 people out of 220 actually like dt in this
class. and even better, they beat out depeche mode (which was at #40).
ahhhhhh.
ok. bye.

Well Mark, I am no Mike Portnoy, but I've been playing drums and guitar for
years. I think I have somewhat of an answer to your question:
One point I'd like to bring up here...MP's HI HAT technique. If you listen
closely, Portnoy is CONSTANTLY using incredible hi hat cymbal technique,
closing and opening it by switching his left foot from bass pedal to hi hat
pedal. When you are listening to Mikes left foot on the 2nd bass drum, also
listen for what it.s doing on the hi hat. In fact it almost seems that he is
doing with just his left foot, what many drummers need both for! Judging by
the speed and accuracy he displays with that, I would say MP could keep the
beat going with the small toe of his right foot if he had to. :) I don't
think he has to "rely" on double bass at all, but he DOES know how to use
the double bass to it's optimum potential.
Dave
PS- Although I like Nicko McBrain, he couldn't touch MP on his best day :) IMHO

Do you have a spy camera in my house????? This is exactly what just took
place here recently...I got the CD last week. I was about to blow them off,
but after this post (and AMAZING coincidence) I am going to give FW a second
shot. I mean, the music is cool, and they are very good but it seems to be
lacking something for me. It almost sounds like they play the songs cuz it's
their job or something...it didn't seem to have a "fire" to me. To me they
haven't matched the "feeling" I get from Dream Theater and Queensryche, even
though a song or 2 on the CD sounded like a "half powered" version of Ryche.
But since you posted this, and it blew me away, I am going to check them out
some more before I decide!:)
Thanks,

This is something I've been wondering for the longest time. When
James gets so high (or any male singer for that matter) is he singing
in falsetto? In Another Day on Acoustic Dreams it's pretty apparent
he's singing falsetto there, but I'm not too sure about on all the
other songs. I'm guessing it isn't falsetto...

I had a dream one night. I was at a Dream Theater show. I was really excited because I haven't seen them live before. The opening tune is Metropolis; I really like that song so thiings are looking good. James started singing and his voice sounds really good. I'm singing along with the rest of the audience. All of a sudden when James sings 'Death is the first dance, eternal' and looks in my direction. I'm laughing my ass off; James gets pissed and walks off and the show is over! Of course everybody wants to kick my ass. Why was I laughing? Because when he sang that line, all I could think about is 'Death is the first dancing turtle.' I don't think I'll evr be able to listen to that song the same way again. Thanks Bafu! :)

Greets. My first post to the Jam, mod'd or unmod'd. 'Twas wondering what everyone thinks was James' best performance in concert? This would apply more to tape traders than anyone, since we have access to the most shows. I've got several including the '93 Summerfest "Lords of Sound" show and the January '95 show from Saitama, Japan, and he isn't particularly good at either of these. The notes he seems to miss are relatively easy sustained notes. I don't have LaBries top end and I easily hold those notes when I perform. It's funny 'cuz the Summerfest show was only a couple of months removed from the LatM show where he was generally great. Any comments?

Hey,
Still Drunk from the earlier post, yet, having a good time. I am currently listening to the awesome jam part of Metropolis part 1, and thinking that it wqould be cool to have another beer.
Anyway, I wasa just wondering, as I often do, how many of you ytsejammerz are professionals, and how many of you still dream of becoming something greater than the reality in which you are currently residing in, much like drunk old me.
I mean, How many of you are content with who you are, and how many think you can be so much more? I fall in the catagory(?) of the latter.
And for all you who are better, oh well, don't read this.
One last question: How many of you (Mike B) have ever submitted a post to the jam drunk and made a fool of yourself?

I have to heartily disagree with the Jammer who opined that "Surrounded" was best in studio.... *buzz* thank you for playing and we have some fine Parting Gifts for you.
IMO, "Surrounded" is far better live than on I&W: there's the more-complete keyboard ending as well as more keyboard embellishing elsewhere by Kevin (I'm thinking especially of the versions on LatM and MAJESTIC HARMONIES), the sometimes-cool audience singalong at the end (hmm, which boot has the best one? I think LORDS OF SOUND, where James is clearly delighted with the audience).....plus the live versions always seem to have more life and vibrancy than the I&W version, which sounds flat in comparison. Just IMO.

I know this is way off topic, but it probably should be in a FAQ somewhere because I am fielded this question every day. So, whether you are playing the game or not, I'll try to make this explanation brief so we could get back to Dream Theater content. (drink)
I was born blind. My condition is called Congenital Leibers. It is a condition that deals with the rods and cones in my retinas. There is no surgery of glasses that can correct the condition. It is supposedly a degeneration thing, which means that I should lose the small amount of vision I have. So far, my eyes are fine, and I can still walk around campus without being hospitalized. For the record, I see depending on lighting conditions. I have no night vision. The best conditions are a clear sunny afternoon. ON days like this, I can see some color, but not much. I was once told I had 12/1200 vision, (20/20 is normal, don't ask what it means, I have no idea.) I am told that I have a chance of passing my condition onto my children if my future wife has the same genetics I do. Nobody else in my entire family is blind, at least not as severely as me. I read braille, but I know print, even though I am very slow to read and it has to be really large and I get headaches from trying to read it. My computer talks. It sounds like Steven Hawking from the Pink Floyd song Keep Talking. Most importantly, and I say this to all you "normal" people who may run into handicapped people throughout life, is that handicaps aside, I am just like the rest of you, I just look upon the world a little differently. and I have better senses than all of you. :) OK, back to the Dt content.
