Several weeks ago, Skadz gave us IRCers a figure, it was around 1265 or
so... That was on the old 'jam, not the new (unmoderated) or on
Metropolis. Besides, I might be completely off on the figure...

Well, this is my first time out of Lurker Mode since I subscribed in
December. I'll try not to hurt myself... or others. I'm going to cover
alot of ground here, and I may trudge up some long buried threads, but
I'm going to make this post worthwhile. This is as much for me as it is
for all on IRC who have been harassing me about my DT experience. If you
want to blame someone for the depletion of bandwidth, thank them.

[this is a re-post of my first post to the 'jam, which seems to have been
lost in the buffer in the transition to ax.com If this shows up twice,
I'm sorry, and Ken, Ryan, if it's in the buffer still, delete it.]

First of all, the inevitable (summer) question: How did you get
into DT? Well, long ago, in a land far, far away... It was back in '92,
I guess. A friend of mine was staying over and brought some CDs with
him. One of them was I&W. I listened to that most of the day. After he
left, the only thing I could remember from the weekend was the first
minute and a half of PMU. I would start at the beginning with the
guittar and follow the music in my mind, but no matter how hard I tried,
I couldn't get the whole intro strait in my head. Still, I knew I loved
it. For about six weeks after that, I constantly asked him (because I
constantly forgot): "What was that CD you brought over!?" And he would
say, "Dream Theater." And I would say, "Who's it by!?" And he would
say, "No, you dipshit, Dream Theater is the *band*, Images and Words is
the CD!" And I would say: "Oh... sorry." And three days later we would
have the exact same conversation (I couldn't keep the group and CD
    strait, even after six weeks!).
So there came a time that I finally broke down and bought the CD
from Streetside Records in St.Louis. I listened to it every day for
about three months (skipping tracks 2 and 4 (I *do* listen to them, but
sometimes I prefer the 'heavier' sound)). I got my cousin hooked on them
(not that it was hard or anything), and one day he called me and said
"Guess what I just bought?" I had no idea. He said "Awake." I had no
idea what "Awake" *was* (sorry, folks, didn't have 'net access till this
    year).
He explained that Awake was the new DT album, which he hadn't even
listened to yet... He came by and picked me up, we went to Streetside,
and I bought my copy, sight unseen. That's rare for both of us, we are
very picky about music. The only CDs I'll buy without listening to first
are DT, Queensryche, and Extreme (please wait, while I put on my asbestos
    suit).
A few more months go by, and I'm back at Streetside... I'm stunned
to find TWO more DT albums! There on the shelf are WDADU, and LatM. As
there was only one of each, I bought WDADU, and Jon (my cousin) bought
LatM. I opened mine on the drive home and began paging through the
booklet. My first thought was "MY GOD! WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THEIR
HAIR!?" My second was: "HOLY SHIT! THEY FIRED JAMES LABREI!!" I got it
home and listened to it, and ammended the last statement to: "HOLY SHIT!
THEY FIRED JAMES LABREI, AND HIRED SOME GUY THAT CAN'T SING FOR SHIT!!"
After I took another look at the insert, my panic subsided... this was
from the '80s... they fired the guy who can't sing (Charlie Dominici, for
those who don't know), and hired LaBrei. After borrowing LatM for about
a month, I bought that too.
October. 1994. The phone call. "I'm picking you up." "Why." "Dream
Theater is coming. We are going to get our tickets." I could feel the
lump in the back of my throat. Jon picked me up, and we drove to
Streetside, and purchased two general admission tickets for the November
10th DT show at the American Theatre in St.Louis.
The Show. It was incredible. We got there early, and ended
up about 5 feet from the stage! St.Louis was the first show after FW
joined them. They opened. It was ok. Sorry, FW fans, but I was there
for DT. I stood in breathless anticipation as the roadies set up DT's
equipment. The light's dimmed. The music started. Lights cut throught
the smoke filled air and "Dream Theater"'s danced across the back drop.
The music crescendoed, and the lights suddenly blazed full force at the
five figures on stage. There they were, in all their glory. My favorite
group. The gods of music. Dream Theater. Petrucci stood on the right
side of stage wailing on his guittar. Portnoy perched high above the
band, pounding on his set. Myung plucked away on the left at an
intricate bass line. LaBrei walked around the stage entranced, waiting
for his cue. And on the far left, behind his rack of keyboards was -
WHAT THE FUCK! WHERE THE HELL IS *KEVIN*!? WHO IS THIS DORK!? Like I
said, I didn't have 'net access till this year... I had no idea Moore had
left. Derek Sherinian was introduced by James halfway through the
concert. (James, if you're reading this, I'm the one who was screaming
"WHERE THE HELL IS KEVIN!?" during that) Being a keyboardist myself, and
knowing Kevin's expertese, I couldn't see how they had the gall to fire
him. The concert was great. I couldn't hear for a few hours, but it was
worth it. On the way home, Jon and I decided that Derek was Dominici's
grandson. Don't get me wrong here. I was in shock that Moore was
fired. I'm not going to pass judgment on Derek until I hear him play
something he wrote himself. (Although he *does* look like Quasimodo in
    the ACoS picture) ;)
I was content with Awake and I&W for another year. Then, I was
visiting my girlfriend at her college (shhh... don't tell my parents!),
and I saw ACoS at Circuit City in Kansas City. Again... I handed my
money to the clerk, sight unseen. I got to Karen's (my GF), and the
first thing I did was put ACoS in her roommate's CD player. I had heard
ravings about it, but I had never heard the song. I listened to the
intro (which I think is great, regardless of what it used to be, and
apparently, so does DT, or it wouldn't be on the studio verson, and
neither would the outro!). I saw the guittars coming ahead of time, but
it was still amazing. I sat in silence for 23+ minutes and contemplated
the placement of candles in the temple I planed to construct the minute I
    got back here.
That was September 1995. Now, I have WDADU, I&W, Awake, LatM, ACoS,
and TSM single. I'm biding my time till September... the next album and
    new tour.

I have noticed that opinion of DT are pretty separated. There are pretty
    much only three:
a.) "Dream who?" These people are not idiots, they just aren't
informed. They haven't heard DT, and so they can't form an opinion.
Once they hear DT, they will enter one of the following:
b.) "Oh my god! You listen to Dream Theater!? I though I was the only
one." These are our friends. We were all here at one point. These are
the fans that make the backbone of the Ytsejam.
c.) "Heh heh. Beavis, this sucks change it!" It's no coincidence that I
quote Beavis and Butthead... most of the people who hate DT love the mind
numbing stupidity of this show, and are fans of the talentless throngs
that invade MTV on a weekly basis. Another common anthem of this group
is "Progressive rock sucks," which they say without ever having heard
    progressive rock.
In short, don't be dishearted when a mainstream magazine trashes DT,
just remember that as you contemplate his slow, painful demise, the
author is probably sitting at home, masturbating, and laughing right
    along with B&B.

I have a DT page for those interested:

            http://www.missouri.edu/~c675311/dt.html

I recommend checking out all my pages though. It's worth the time. I
have the DT name (yellow against black), which I edited from my scan of
the Awake cover. I also have the Majesty logo in Corel4 .cdr format...
there is a gif version of it on my page. If anyone want's either of
those for their own page, e-mail me... all I ask is that you give me
credit for it. Please don't copy it without contacting me and getting
permission first, or I will be forced to hunt you down and disembowel you
with a rusty butterknife (on the bright side, though, you will be the
first human sacrifice in my DT temple).

Thanks are due to buster. He did a great job on the DT DOOM II
level. Keep up the good work, and I'll catch you on the IRC.

In regards to the Columbia House thread, BMG has I&W(101192),
Awake(106154), and ACoS(103937) as well($15.98 ea.). And they also give
a quarter page add (although they call I&W "hard rock," and Awake their
"sophomore effort"). If anybody want's to join, e-mail me, I can get you
10 for 1/2. BMG has a limited selection, but their intro deal kicks ass,
and it's no strings attached. For Fates Warning fans: BMG also has
    Chasing Time(103560), Perfect Symmetry(110839), and No Exit(110840).

The lyrics thread: My fav is "Death is the first Dancing Turtle,"
although I forget who first pointed that out to me on IRC (Bafu?).
Another is "I was told there'd be no one to COLOR on, when I feel alone
and afraid." Admittedly, it's not funny, but that's what it sound's
    like. (or perhaps "cholera")

One last thing: For those of you who haven't checked out the IRC
yet, DO IT! Load up your IRC client, and type "/server irc.dreamt.org
2112" If you don't have a client, and you use winsock for dialup access,
    go to:

            http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/1822/get.html

and download mIRC. It's the best freeware IRC client availible, and it's
unofficially "The official IRC client of the Ytsejam." Once you're on
dreamt, type "/join #ytsejam" As Pellaz said (Paul), just stick around
if you have the time, and someone will show up. There are alot of cool
people who hang out there, and the IRCOP has got to be the coolest guy I
have ever known, he is so kind and funny that it defies belief (NOW can I
    have auto-ops, Skadz!? Pleeeeeeease!?).

the 'religion thread'... DT is god... 'nuff said).
Please send any requests for my DT images to *me* directly, not to

Progscape across the world? Yeah as if.

But what booths would they have? Well, you gotta remember that a lot
of proggies are geeks. So expect, say,

a Magic:the Addiction booth (back in the old days, when I worked with
Wizards of the Coast, they had class ... and I *liked* it)

book signings by Ian MacDonald (read _Queen of Morning, King of Day_ if
you want refs to Genesis ... "Dancing With the Moonlight Night" and
    "The Chamber of 32 Doors")

the Babylon 5 booth (pumping King Crimson--"The Night Watch," Golgotha--
"Unmaker of Worlds," Yes--"Going for the One," Shadow Gallery, Rush--
"Double Agent" and "The Twilight Zone," King's X--"Prisoner" and all
    your Bab5/prog favorites)

the bar (where you can get your Three Wise Men, Glass Moons, and Grendels
and then post to the jam on their top-notch terminals)

the Magna Carta CGI booth (your host: Jeff Brockman of Cairo, and I heard
that Les Claypool--Prawnsong Designs--might show up)

    the Usenet Oracle (of course)

    Come on... others?

BTW: I've got a couple DT refs in my upcoming novel ... an asteroid
named Myun and a brief ref to Portnoy ... and one in my second ...
    YtseHouses, Inc.

NP: Yes, TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS (How could I have waited so long
to get such a great album?)

It's been cool. All my high school friends have forgotten me, all my

Nicko Hasn't switched to double Bass..he's always had that sound of 2
bass drums. There's a certain drum patter he plays to make is sound
like 2 bass drums, he usually does that sorta thing at the end of a
    song.

A question for drummers on the list, Nicko being extremelt excellent
and fast and amazing on the drums, with his single foot...how often
does a guy Like MP use a single foot, not counting double bass
sections. For Example, Nick Menza of Megadeth uses a single kick ALOT
when he's not doing a double bass section, MP do that or does he rely
on both peddles to keep the beat goin?

At the recent live shows, it was the crowd on backing vocals :)
I don't remember John singing any backup. I'm pretty sure the electric
Silent Man didn't have the usual JP vocals.

Did JP sing at all at the recent shows?

    Yeah...wouldn't it be great?!?!
I think there are a few outdoor venues that would be awesome
though...Red Rocks in Denver (THE GREATEST PLACE IN THE WORLD FOR LIVE
CONCERTS IMHO!!!) would be perfect, although there would only be one stage.
As for booths....perhaps guitar, drum and keyboard manufacturers could
set up some booths....and perhaps they could incorporate some clinics into
it. By 2000, it might be workable to set up I-net computer cafes where
fans could chat or Post their thoughts on the live event...live! They
could also check out and buy the CDROMS put out by various bands....
As for actually getting the thing off the ground...it comes down to $$$.
If they see a profit in it...they would probably do it. That basically
comes down to fan support. Would fans attend? Soooo...I wonder how many
people out there in Ytse-land would pay to see and take part in such an
event? Would they be willing to give up the "intimacy" of small venues for
an all day event? I would! I'm starved for good shows...and being able to
see several great bands in one day....wow. I guess we could discuss who
to contact...and then find out what it would take to convince that
"someone" that this would be great idea. That's my thoughts on it....what
    do you think?

So you've just bought Parallels by Fates Warning since you've heard all those
guys on the mailing list and newsgroups talk about Fates Warning. You've
never actually heard any Fates but you listen to plenty of Dream Theater
     and Rush.

You rush home to hear the CD, put it on, hit the play button, you don't hear
anything too exciting, you think, it'll get better! You listen to the whole
album and on the whole you weren't too impressed. You think to yourself,
"Those guys are all smoking something if they think this is good stuff".
So you opt to sell it or give it to a friend since it wasn't that great.

Ah, my dear friend, perhaps you haven't given it a chance!

Welcome to the Listening Guide. This guide will hopefully get you on your
way to becoming one of the few but dedicated Fates Warning fans.

Let's start off by answering a few questions.

     1. Is Fates Warning like Dream Theater?

Yes and no. They definitely have their own progressive style. Some of the
textures of their songs are the same but Fates Warning is generally thought
of to be a darker more brooding band, sometimes bordering on depressive.

     2. What album should I start with if I listen to a lot of Dream Theater with
lots of time changes and such?

You should probably start out with No Exit or Perfect Symmetry.

     3. What are their earlier albums like?

Night on Brocken is more of a Maidenish type sound while Spectre Within they
begin to break into the new mold. Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian
are more towards metal with progressive tendencies.

     4. Why the change from Awaken the Guardian to No Exit?

They replaced singer John Arch with Ray Alder and thus their style began
      to change.

     5. So how come I don't like Parallels?

In my opinion, Parallels is one of the greatest CD's made by any band.
It's not the in your face time changes that are astounding, but as one
person put it, it's a musician's music. The way the instruments blend
and contrast, the way the songs are arranged, the very minor key changes.

     6. Which album is the most progressive?

Many have argued this question but a large percentage will tell you Perfect
      Symmetry is.

     Some facts:

      * The current members are:
             Jim Matheos - Guitar
             Frank Aresti - Guitar
             Joe DiBiase - Bass

      * The albums:
             Night on Brocken
             Spectre Within
             Awaken the Guardian
             No Exit

Bombay Vindaloo is now my favorite song ever.

People said it was jazzy...that's not jazzy...that's dizzying.

Okay...that doesn't mean much. I just wanted to use another word with 2 'z's in it. Along with Live at the Marquee, I got: WDaDU (I only had it on tape), and get this! At Best Buy, LatM and WDaDU were both only 15.99! Also, I got Caress of Steel and A Farewell to Kings.

    Yay me!

Ben Laussade I am a congressman. I make $82,000 dollars a year. If you don't believe me...you can even ask me!
