Overall performance:
Guitars: Wow, this guy freaks me out! Richie is one of the
most technically proficient players (under JP-DTC) out
there, and it shows on this album. His style is mostly
jazzy, but he fuses this with everything ranging from
psychedelic funky rhythms to textural romps to sweeping
arpeggios. Very complex stuff.
I heard a little bit of Kotzen's earlier stuff, and I wasn't
overly impressed. Now with this instrumental out, it is
going to knock off Joe Satriani's _Surfing with the Alien_
off my all-time favorite instrumental.

Bass: Jeff Berlin plays on 3 songs, and Richie on the rest
of the album. Both are great. The bass can range from
groggy bass grooves to funky bass lines. Richie is just as
good as he is on guitar. One of the things I like so much
about IGFE is that most of the time the bass is going in its
own direction, yet complementing the guitar.
Drums: Greg is a versatile player. He has played with
Satriani, Gary Hoey, and I'm sure with many others too. He
has a nice jazzy style. For being a studio drummer, he's a
damn good one. A great drummer with little recognition from
the outside world.
If you want to hear something innovative, GO OUT AND BUY
THIS ALBUM! Its good enough to satiate those progressive
urges that you might have. This CD deserves to be in every
guitar freaks collection. You won't be disappointed...and
if you are, go ahead, flame me.

article "Listening Room" where John Pettrucci critiques
several bands. The bands are Iron Maiden, Jason
Becker,Rush, Peter Gabriel, and several others. He also
mentioned in the article that Al Dimeola was a major
influence on him.

best part is that my former band decided that they might not want keyboard

Hey! Has anyone heard or seen Tony MacAlpine play? He's unbelievable! I highly recommend checking him out. I think Petrucci fans will completely dig him. He's a gtrist and keyboardist. Not too much in the way of unusual time sigs but incredibly adept (maybe thats an understatement). He's on Shrapnel Records and his most recent album is called Evolution. Tony Franklin is on bass and Mike Terrana on drums. Terrana is Yngvie's(sp?) former drummer and a hell of a nice guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him before the show. I'm serious. Check it out!

Buster made an excellent and painfully obvious observation: Portnoy's hi-hat work is fucking incredible. For that matter, there is no weakness in his technique, anyway! But some of that incredible switching between open and closed hi hat and the ride cymbal while going at it on both kick drums is possible because he's got 3 hi hats - one pedal operated, one permanently open and one permanently shut. The last two being on the right, somewhere near the ride cymbal. No fancy footwork there - it's just a flick of the wrist! Check out the DT gear list on various DT web sites and on drkhoe's ftp site. Every last piece of percussion that Mike P. has is listed. (I know, I typed it in)
Now addressing the question that John Kotzian put forth to the jam: Are we content with who we are, or do we want more?
Of course I want more! Bigger! Better! Louder! Faster! More DT content! More alcohol content! More Bafu Vai posts! More Mike Bahr CDs! I'm not saying that we should be depressed that we're not where we want to be, just that we should always be striving for more. That's what keeps us going. Hell, I've got a shot at a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music. I'll have to practice and study hard enough to make body parts fall off - fingers, ass, dick... but man, it would be worth it! Just think about why you're reading this. You're on the jam, and you're a DT fan. Seeking to improve, and being the best you can be is what DT is all about to me! I'll never be satisfied... But I'm content to be that way... Paradoxical?

Damon said that he once had 12/1200 vision, which means that he can see from 12 feet what the average person can see from 1200 feet.

I picked it up a few days ago and was amazed at how the reviewer totally shredded the whole disk and said that it should have never been made. First, the drinking game is hilarious!!! Best post in teh "long form" category since the early "Ytse & Jam"s.
Second, I think the Bulls (oh yea, baby!!!!) should replace "Eye in the Sky"du ring player intros for PMU. WIth the lights going out and the UNited Center crowd going nuts, the lone guitar would tear through the darkness and .... oops. Got a little carried away there.
Third, Koggie asked about where we are in life and changes we may make. I am a professional, but the drummer in my band and I were discussing becoming full time musicians. I dunno if I want to deal with all the negatives of that lifestyle. I've got too much dork practicality in me to drop everything and follow that road.
BTW, is anyone here into progressive jazz (or acid jazz)? That's basically the genre of my new band. Hopefully we'll be playing out by early April. LATER-

First , thank you, to Brian Cox for providing this recording of the December show for us. For many of us that had plans of attending and where unable to, it's a bitter sweet thing. But the energy of the night is on the tapes and at least I can imagine myself there. Brian the tapes are great even with the bass noise which you forget about very quickly. Man, James sounds like Bono when singing Bad(U2) and the crowd wasn't bad either.

A lot of people have been giving me shit about this statement. If you go back and read the post, it's a phreakin' STORY! I was relating my DT experiance. I did not have 'net or email when I saw them in concert, and I hadn't heard anything about Kevin leaving or being fired. I KNOW he left the band. I KNOW he wasn't fired, but at the time I was at the concert, I didn't know what was going on, only that my favorite keyboardist was no longer in my favorite band, and needless to say, I was a little miffed! I'm sorry if I confused the masses and made you newcomers think Kev was fired... he left of his own free will. (and yes, Koba, I know that *you* are not a newcomer). I believe that James' best show was in June '93 at the Warfield in San Francisco. Is it just me, or does there seem to be a lack of really good bass tabs/transcriptions ? Besides those few that were published in "Guitar" I really haven't seen anything worth while. Does anybody know other internet sites to find song tabs? (Other than those listed in the FAQ.) What would be really cool is "The Ytsejam" written out for bass! Especially the solo! If anybody could help me out I'd really appreciate it! :-)

the current members are; Jim Matheos; from Mass. Now lives in New Hampshire Frank, we know is no longer in the band (I'm sure you will see that posted at least 20 times along with this one), frank is from Marlboro CT. Joe D. and his wife maggie just had a son, and at this point it looks like he may sit the next one out, I'm not sure if this is temporary or a departure, things could change.
