Hey all, I hear alot of talk about the Birch Hill show tapes. I was
lucky enough to see this show (even though all I could see was Mike P.
due to the many fans) and would like to get my hands on a tape. If anyone
can help me please respond. Oh, did anyone else see the guys from Shadow
Gallery at the show? They were waiting on line in front of me.

    Hey guys!

First, to the guy who posted the review of the new Richie Kotzen
album, I can't agree more! Few instrumental guitar albums have knocked me
on my ass in the past couple years, but this one is SCARY! It's very
Holdsworth-esque with Richie's usual array of killer Tele sounds. At the
end he sings a beautiful acoustic ballad with a stunning guitar break. This
album will make you appreciate Richie Kotzen as one of THE greats out there
today. It's too bad he's never really settled with a band, but I guess
that's what happens when you sleep with band-mates' girlfriends and then
    marry them:)
ALSO...I lost several e-mail messages, some of which pertained to
my extra copy of Steve Vai's "Alien Love Secrets." So...one more time...if
anyone is interested in trading DT/Rush stuff for a BRAND NEW, UNOPENED
copy of "Alien Love Secrets" let me know. My terms will be such, so that
you will get a much better deal than if you were to buy the CD.

Okay...DT content. This is a tough request, so listen up. I'm
looking for the Japanese CD single that came with the limited edition of
ACOS. I believe it was "Tears" and I heard that the CD singles have been
mailed out now, so if ANYONE knows where I can get this, I'd be greatly
appreciative. I'm also looking to buy a Japanese ACOS and/or a Japanese
LATM, so if anyone can help me with any of this, PLEASE DON'T GO..uh..I
mean, PLEASE HELP!! :) Later all!

Didn't I have that in my .sig once upon a time?

Anywho...I think that there is the TAB for ACoS in some magazine! I
met a person at school who says he has it (he also says that he can play the
whole song...God, I hope he can, so I can finally have someone to be in a
band with. :-). He also asked to borrow some DT stuff. I think we have a
new fan in the makings, folks!

    /me headbangs to Bombay Vindaloo.

            I thought of a good idea...but I haven't a clue if it'll work. Let's
hypothesize. (Hypothetically) It would be cool if we could get a drummer
from the Jam to record himself playing a few DT songs. Then, send the tape
to a guitarist to layer the guitar part over it...then send it to bass,
keys, vocals...then we have a full recording. Then we could make a tape
tree. We could do that any number of times, with different line-ups. Of
course...I have no idea if that is possible. Can you record tracks over
tracks on tapes like that? This is serious, btw. I think it would be nifty
    doodle if it worked.

/me headbangs some more to Bombay Vindaloo.

Yeah, I guess...but I think it would be mr grandiose than grandoise. :-)

I myself would rather go to two concerts and see 120 minute sets by
each, instead of 60 minute sets. I want my first concert-going experience
    to be a good one.

Could you give me an example of this? I'm not disagreeing, just wondering
where and in what song this takes place.

I dunno....I don't think his toes are that big. Ever tried doing any of the

                            tom tom
                                    kick kick (etc.)
fills with only one foot? They is a bitch. That's what Double bass drum

    Hey All,
My first post on the new Jam! (everyone drink, see below)

    Darren Redick said in YJ1277:
    >Hey! Has anyone heard or seen Tony MacAlpine play? He's unbelievable!

I couldn't agree with you more! Not only is he a guitarist on par with
Yngwie, but he plays keys equally well. Alas, I've never seen him live,
but based on "Maximum Security", he is truly great. (IMO)
And Kris Claerhout is on tour with him!? Swine!! :)
There's another guy named Alex Gregory who's a guitar hero, but I
don't know a thing about him. Anybody?

One more for the Ytsebar: 1/2 Rumpleminze, 1/2 Wild Spirit.
(I think Wild Spirit tastes and smells like Godiva chocolate liqueur, but
it's clear and 105 proof. Wheee!)

And while I'm here... if you're an Iron Maiden fan and they're coming
to your town, keep your ears open for them showing up at a record
    store to sign "X-Factor"...

I just read on the last ytsejam that there's another fan at ASU. Hi
    uncle dave.

I saw in BMG this month that they have all three DT albums (I&W, AWAKE,
and ACoS). They even gave DT a 1/5 room on their "metal" page.
The picture is pretty decent too.

    > (or james, johns, or mike).

Dave, I don't know which particular Tori mailing list you checked out, but
I'm on Really Deep Thoughts (the only one I know of) and I haven't seen
anything about "who Tori last fucked," as you so eloquently put it. Unless
you were referring to the Spin article that someone just posted. True,
there's a lot of speculation and varying interpretations about the lyrics
on the new album, and yes, a lot of them are sexually-oriented, but that's
how she writes... but it's not like Tori's some nympho slut; and it's not
like everyone's digging up dirt on her. Maybe you were on
    rec.music.tori-amos; that's a noisy place.

And as for your comment that the Ytsejam is better than the Tori list (I
can't comment about the Alanis list, nor would I care to), I'd have to say
that it's really apples to oranges. The people are way different, and the
content is way different. Here on the 'jam, we have a lot of metal and
progressive fans, many of whom are musicians, and we talk about the
technical aspects of the music and the lyrics, and boots, etc. And there's
kind of a general contempt for a large amount of non-DT content, probably
due to the high volume of the list.

The Tori list (RDT) is just a whole different ballgame. It's much more
open-- people write in with non-Tori content like they're writing to
friends, when they need to blow off steam, when they feel like being silly,
when they need advice, when they're feeling like shit and need some
support. There was a girl whose parents put her on medication to control
her depression, and she was considering suicide, and she wrote in like a
3-page post to the list, telling all... it was really heavy; but she got a
lot of letters of support. You'll NEVER see anything like that here on the
'jam-- I know a lot of you would see that sort of thing as wimpy or overly
melodramatic. But people need that, and RDT is a place for it. There's a
lot of emotional traffic on the Tori list, and a lot of it is written in
its own odd style, but that's what you get in Tori Amos circles. It's a
really close-knit group. And yes, there is Tori discussion, a whole lot
now that Boys For Pele is out-- and not a lot of it is about what time
signature she's playing at x:xx in a given song. That's not really the
    issue.

    OK, on to something else.

    > Well Mark, I am no Mike Portnoy, but I've been playing drums and guitar for
    > years. I think I have somewhat of an answer to your question:
    > One point I'd like to bring up here...MP's HI HAT technique.

Does MP have 2 hi-hats? On several songs on Awake (esp. Erotomania), I
hear the hi-hat switch channels-- first right, then left. That's pretty
    cool.

    > One last question: How many of you (Mike B) have ever submitted a post
    > to the jam drunk and made a fool of yourself?

Actually, yes... after UVA beat Florida State last fall, I got 'faced and
posted this stupid one-line thing to the 'jam about our victory... and some
pissed-off FSU jammer wrote to me like "So the fuck what?"

    Scott.

I just recently picked up the Fates Warning CD "Chasing Time" For those
who don't know what it is, its like a compilation of FW's best stuff, and
    some unreleased songs and remixes.

Anyway, for me it's my first FW listen...and I think its F'n awesome.
I'm definately gonna pick up more by these guys soon. I highly recommend
    their stuff.

Also, same day I picked up Queensryche's "Bridge" single. It has on it
the full band version of "Someone Else" which happens to be some of the
finest QR music I've heard in a long time. It rolls in at about 7 1/2
minutes, even though the CD says its like 4:22 or so. Its a must buy for
    any QR fans out there!!

There has been alot of talk on the jam as to whether I or any other member of Dream Theater use drugs. Well of course we do. How the fuck do you think we play so damn fast. I personally smoke three viles of crack before each show. Mike snorts about ten lines. and John M. Shoots up a shitload of heroin. That's how he stays so layed back when he plays those outragous bass lines during ytsejam. Also I would like to ask that Mike Bahr please stop making Boots of us. YOU ARE STEALING OUR RECORD SALES. Well I got to go....I have a Kilo of weed with my name on it.

This is my first post so I hope I get it right. I'm a drummer who worships
Portnoy as God(as does any drummer with half a brain). I'm lookin for some
drummers to chat with about M.P. and other drummers such as: Smith, Bozzio,
Morgenstein, Beauford, Famularo, Rock, Paul, etc. I'm lookin for any kind of
    talk about drums.

I know it's hard, and it can be touch and go for a long time
(believe me, I know this from experience) but sometimes you just have to
call their bluff and leave. As soon as a person reaches college age, most
parents decide they can threaten to kick that person out if they so much
as sneeze wrong. That's been my only major complaint about my own
parents... they went above and beyond the call in most other ways.

Think about DT... they went (most of them) to Berklee, and that's
no free ticket. They probably went through the same crap we do.

I'm afraid I cannot confirm this because it isn't true. That's
James and John on that recording. It's from an Oklahoma City radio
interview & session. Hard to believe, eh?

The reason that and Silent Man (I think) were credited to DT was
to eliminate possible legal trouble. The entire CD is DT performing.

Cool! I agree, let's all bug Mike about this.

Really? Wow! I have 20/375 and 20/425 vision (left/right) and
most of you who've met me might have noticed how damn poorly I see
without contact lenses. I'm just lucky contacts are sufficient. That's
right, Jammers, your CDs are being made by a guy who can hardly see! And
if I watch enough TV from a distance of a few inches, I can catch up with
Damon in a matter of months. :)

    > I haven't post in a while and decided to write after listening to WDATU #425

I wanted to mention something to the net.. I'm up to the 300's in
mailing; Hui-Chi got her copy #425 by picking it up in person. I guess
being a local has SOME benefits. :) So I'm not doing special favours,
    just trying to accomodate everyone.

That show was decent, but James still hadn't mastered (at that
time) making his voice last near-flawlessly through the length of a
concert. He's come a long way. At those Xmas shows, even though he had
bronchitis, he was hitting notes that would have torn a hole in my neck,
and he still had his range when it was time for the encore. I think the
best show ever was the Birch Hill 12/29/95 show.

As far as I've been able to tell, it's near impossible to get
ahold of Acoustic Dreams, but somewhere, people are selling it.

The reason I know this is because I get e-mails of the JTP Net
Collectibles Price Guide, which is a listing that is written by a program
that automatically goes through every *.marketplace post and collates
information based on the criteria of net availability. I don't know how
he did it, but it's incredible the amount of info this thing makes. A
similar program written by the Cloister guy does this for all the card
    collecting newsgroups.

In any case, the last time I checked the NCPG with a search for
DT in it, it read the following:

    Subconscious 1995 OOP 25 140 35 113
    Acoustic Dreams 1995 OOP 25 100 25 76
    When Dream And Today Un 1995 IP 25 25 25 25
    Antiquities 1996 IP 25 25 25 25
    Scenes From A Memory 1996 IP 25 25 25 25

            Also under Rush:
    Cygnus: A Tribute To Th 1995 OOP 25 43 18 35

The columns work like this in the listing, which is fucking
enormous (I have certain sections forwarded to me):

Title, Date released, Out Of Print or In Print, Original Price,
Highest Price Seen, Lowest Price Seen, Average Price

Since the info collated also takes auctions into the data pool,
the prices trend a bit low. I REALLY want to know what sort of rich
person decided to pay some of those high prices!!

    > does anyone know when dt is coming to arizona? l8r

Not for a while. I'm from here in Chandler, and I speak with
management when it's possible, and they won't tour again until the fall
at the earliest. Expect them to start in the Southeast and work their way
west if they open for Rush, otherwise they'll start in New York and work
    their way west.

Final notes... I have an overflowing mailbox with corrections to
the Antiquities number list... I'm trying to get to those ASAP. Don't
panic if you don't hear from me right away. Feel free to e-mail me if you
need to know something, even if it might take time before I reply.

Please help orders for WDATU and Antiquities and Scenes... it's
starting a bit slower than the orders for Acoustic Dreams did, and we all
remember what happened with THAT release!!
