    Hey people!

Afew jams ago mojoman made a comment about Tori Amos not being
related to DT. She may not be related to them in the biblical sense,
but she makes some great music. I've got some great discs I never would
have owned if it wasn't for jammers' recommendations.
Bring back Moderation? OH NO, NOT AGAIN!!!!! you've got to be
kidding me. Sounds like a possible Pat Buchanan supporter to me.
Freedom of speech...just watch what you say. Sure, there's people who
abuse the jam, but that's part of democracy. While I only subscribe to
ytsejam and Metropolis, I've seen other mailing lists; and ytsejam is
by far has the most intellegent posts of any of them. Ytsejam is #1 !
Nobody else even comes close. As always, this is *IMO*, I could be
    wrong.

    Hey Guys!

I'm looking for a few things for myself and for a gift for a friend. If anyone could help me, I'd appreciate it a lot!

First, I'm looking to buy a copy of "Subconcious." ALSO, I'm looking for a copy of Live at the Marquee(English or Japanese). Finally, I'm looking for a Japanese copy of ACOS. If anyone has spares and can help me, PLEASE e-mail me personally.

Also, a lot of people are STILL whining about Derek Sherinian!! Let's face it, he's in the band FOR GOOD. He's a great player, he's a hell of a nice guy and as for the Jordan Rudess comparisons, well, thank God Derek doesn't have a pair of those silver pants Rudess was wearing at the 12/28 Malibu show:) Rock on guys!

    Hello Jammers,

    re:Keyboards

I refuse to believe that people are still in backlash from the 1980s about keyboards. I agree with Damian that they really add to a band, especially a metal band, whether they are swapping leads with the guitars or doing layering work, IMO some of both is best.

    re:Ytse Tribute

The idea for reinterpreted versions of Dream Theater songs on a disk by Jammers is a GREAT idea. Unfortunately I never took up the guitar (scheduling conflict), but I can still contribute Trombone tracks on the Big Band version of Under a Glass Moon, or the Jazz version of 6:00.

    re:DT/Band notice in general

I got two favorable comments at Tully's (a local club/bar in Westminster) on my Ytsejam shirt (the classic black Jason Giles shirt, pick one up, they are awesome!) from people I didn't even know, "DT is incredible!" comments abounding. I've also heard compliments to the band in a mall, music stores, the King Crimson concert in Washington DC, etc. If you have one of these shirts, you will meet all sorts of fun and exciting people.

    re:Shirt Stories cont.

Another shirt story that comes to mind occurred in Philly after a Marillion show last summer. I was wearing my echolyn shirt (Crimson with the dried apple heads in four color on the front), and I was standing outside with about 20 people talking with Steve Hogarth (vocals-Marillion). Steve was a it buzzed and he kept looking at my shirt trying to figure it out, I guess the colors are kinda wierd for drunk people. Or it could be that I'm a good foot taller than Steve.

    re:Tori Amos

The reason that Tori gets so much discussion is that Kevin Moore reworked one of Tori's songs (Song for Eric) on his demos, and many of us are big Tori fans (me included). I honestly don't think she gets that much traffic on here, but her name pops up from time to time.

I had hoped this one would die before being belabored. Oh, well.

The fact is Labrie, Tate, Alder, and others are singing full voice on those high notes we adore so much. There are times when for stylistic reasons Labrie, for instance, will sing falsetto - listen to the Acoustic Dreams version of Another Day. The use of falsetto is specifically for a softer, lighter feel, like an acoustic set. The reason being that to hit those notes full voice typically requires a great deal of compression at the vocal bands and results in volume as well as pitch; and there are times a singer doesn't desire to produce a great deal of sound.

Seth Riggs out of L.A. calls it "The Mix," which refers to the correlation of a purely falsetto voice and the chest voice. Some vocalists committ an error in their attempts to sing upward in the scale by "pulling chest," which itself refers to attempting to use the chest voice to produce tones in a register it wasn't designed for. If a singer finds himself with a strained voice after each rehersal, he is pulling chest.

The infamous "break" in the voice is not because it is switching to falsetto, but rather because the coordination of the breath, the focus of the vocalist, and the effectiveness of singing into the masque is poor, though perhaps only for a moment. When a guitar player misses a note we don't say, "Oh, his guitar broke," or "Man, his fingers broke on that note." The term is a little harsh for what simply amounts to a mild user error. The inrument, the voice, is fine, the owner merely lapsed momentarily. The Italians call these areas in the voice between registers, where we typically "break," the pisaggio. We've all got them, and we can all learn to sing right over the top of them, too.

Then there is this talk of the sound becoming "thin." Naturally as sounds proceed up the scale they, as a function of wave patterns, fall less and less into the comfortable and capable audio range of we humans. But in terms of what we hear from guys like Tate and Labrie, I don't agree that their is a "thinness" to the vocal quality. Largely, this is due to their proficiency as vocalists. There are simply fewer male singers capable of this. It is not shameful to use an excuse of thinness, or to have difficulty with voice coordination, it simply means it may be time to seek out the proper voice instruction, because if it sounds thin, you can learn to make it sound full, even at the top of your range. David Kyle is, in my opinion, the best man in this country who trains voices away from these errors.

Make no mistake, there is nothing false about the high notes. And I know from three years of instruction with Mr. Kyle, there is nothing more thrilling for a vocalist than knowing how to do it.

Hi All! I just had had to reply to those who don't understand women. I will admit that a boyfriend got me into DT but I am now probably more of a fan than he is. I think the reason most of DT's following is male is because most people appreciate the talent they posses because they themselves are musicians. That certainly isn't to say that women don't realize that they have talent but how many female musicians do you know follow heavier rock and progressive? It takes an informed musician (usually, sorry if you are not) to understand what is going on with DT and most females are raised (myself included) listening to softer music and performing classical. On this same note, anyone else notice the lack of females at the Birch Hill show? Is it normally like that? Anyway, back to the original topic. I have force fed many people here DT and they are all thanking me for it now, that includes women. If you really want to get them (anyone for that matter) to appreciate it, tell them to listen to what is going on individually, not necessarily the whole picture at once. This is something a lot of people don't routinely do but it is a must with DT. When you understand what is going on everywhere you can truly understand it when it all comes together as one. Hope that helped you guys. Any questions, let me know. I am sorry if I insulted anyone with the musician thing. Remember, you don't need to be a performer to be a musician, you have to understand music and its alliance with the world and your body (thank music history and Plato for that one). Performers simply make music available for others to be musicians with.

I can't believe that someone would take me in such a literal way....

I was discussing the Tori Amos thing with half hearted attempt at humour... what do I get in return, but a smart ass....

What if this Ritchie Kotzen thing were disgussed for a few weeks...the Dream Thespians who WANT to talk about DT would find the path of discussion a little worthless...

Face it guys, the reason you are interested in Tori Amos, is because she practically squirmes on a dildo on that piano bench of hers... (Donny and chris are made-up names)

    CHRIS: Hey donny, ever hear of Tori Amos?? DONNY: No man, what's she like? CHRIS: She's great Don, she sings in a really sensual voice... I'd love to do her.... DONNY: Hmmm. that sounds like a good reason to get into a musician.... {Donny tries to picture James Labrie.......yuck, barf, yack}

CHRIS: No man, you really gotta check her out...I have tickets to her performance at snoradome...wanna go?? DONNY: well I dont know, Chris...I wanted to stay home and watch Highlander:The Series (Don hasnt missed an episode) CHRIS: Listen Man, you gotta come....you dont understand... she practicaly fucks her piano!!! In response to the Falsetto issue (again), Trying to describe whats actually going on in the voice while singing falsetto is better understood when you see how all the mechanisms of your voice work. (If you could care less about this you can scroll off) anyone interested in a great book, especially for any vocalists, it will become your bible of singing and practice. The book is called "The new voice", by Alan Greene, and the publisher is Chappell and Co. Inc. For 10.99 it's an invaluable resource of info on every aspect of the pysical voice. Once you read this you will better understand why Labrie has certain qualities about his voice, and how he can readily pull and hold the larynx deep in the laryngeal pharynx with well developed musculature, while using the back of the vocal cords, housed inverted in the larynx. Only the back of the vocal cords vibrate for high tones, only the front of the cords vibrate for middle tones, and the entire cord vibrates for low tones. Most only drop the larynx by reflex while yawning, which most are probably doing about now. One more important note if anyone incorporates this book into their training, beware your voice will develope specific changes during the first month or two , stick with it and you will controll your own voice, mabee your own destiny as well, who knows,

    John Archambault
