Hello. I rarely post on the Jam, but I carefuly read each and every one
of them. My name is Rick (as you can see). I have been playing drums
for approximately 8 years. Mike Portnoy = God...just wanted to share
that. A little something I wanted to contribute to the "double-bass)
issue...I can't play without two kicks...I feel naked. I wanted to share
my use of the hi-hat/D.bass thing. Anyone that drives a standard
transmission automobile will know this quite well. A lot of the time
when I play...I use the ball of my left foot on the kick pedal, and the
heel of my foot on the hi-hat pedal quite a bit...that's just another way
since I can't afford 3 hats like Mr. Portnoy. :) Just to add for the
hell of it...I've got I&W, Awake and ACOS in my cd player playing right
    now...love these guys.

Another subject I wanted to comment on was the Falsetto issue.
I, personally, believe that knowing the correct way to use falsetto, one
could make it sound quite a bit like ones "real" voice. No, I'm not a
singer, not trained vocally in anyway, but I'm one HELL of a shower
vocalist, and over the years of scrubbing feel that I've manipulated my
falsetto to sound more and more like my "real" voice, and being how these
guys (tate, Labrie, etc.) are trained...I see it as a quite a
    possibility.

And one last thing before I go...don't know what the chances are
of this being seen by who it's meant for, but my condolences to John
    Petrucci (sp) and his family.

Knock it off with this stupid drinking game, already! I subscibed to
this mailing list to talk about "progressive music with a focus on Dream
Theater" not to learn how to be an idiot. Also, this list must be
moderated. Four messages a day is way too many, especailly when the
focus is shifting so far from its purpose. The whole drinking game thing
was funny at first, but it has gone on far too long and takes up way too
    much space.

Oh yeah-whoever whoever posted a few days ago and gave us a list of
their favorite bands and included "Iron Maiden or any other grunge or speed
    metal bands"...whatever.

    Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting....

I think I may have an idea about who Cassandra is from the song "Voices"

According to Greek mythology, Cassandra was the princess of Troy. She was
called upon my Apollo to grant him her favors and he would grant her certain
godlike powers in turn. She then gains these and then evades Apollo and
will not sleep with him. Then, he punishes her with a curse: (the punchline
refering to the Dream Theater lyrics) nobody will hear her and listen to her.

I'm not going to tell anyone how to interpret it, but it's an idea,
concidering what the whole song is about, and the idea that the narrator of
the story in "Voices" is thinking that they are "Cassandra Fleeting"

    Just a thought.....
Hey, anyone else in Madison going to the Thought Industry show in a couple

    Hi all,
Yes this is another word on falsetto...actually it's on vocal
range.......the once was a classification of vocalists called
castrattos......they were males which where castrated as children to
maintain their voices....this is obviously no longer done........any
ways, my point is that no one to this day has the vocal range of a
    castratto which was about 3 octaves.....that's all...later

Some general stuff to yack about...

First, that collaboration of musicians idea of making a DT tribute sounds
great. I only hesitate about the "adding a track and sending it along" idea.
I can see someone (possibly unconsciously) thinking, "This riff I have is
GREAT! I think I'll just stick it a little higher up in the mix... By doing
this, it'll systematically cover up that bass player's killer groove that he's
been kicking out. And what about that wicked soundscape that the keyboard
guy's been pumping out? All of it might be lost because someone is used to the
guitar being high in the mix. Again, I'm not saying this person is being a
jerk by doing this. They just do what comes naturally to them, but it might be
stomping on the feet of others, ya know?

A solution of this is to have player #1 (probably bass) lay down his track,
send it to player #2 (probably percussion) listen and add, but put his track on
a separate tape. Send them to the keys guy and put his part on another tape
and keep sending them until the vocals guy has 5 tapes. Then send all 5 tapes
to a mixer person who will do a very conservative mix including all parts in
    reasonable compliment to each other.

When writing this, I realize that I have no idea as to what a 4-track or DAT or
ADAT machine does and I'm thinking these machines might be able to take care of
this mix problem automatically. Am I right, or are my fears valid?

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This just keeps bugging me so I'll keep mentioning it. I think this could be a
record: No-one that I know of has ever been busy and without free-time of any
kind for an entire YEAR! Until now. Imagine it... Having every minute of
your day scheduled with something terribly important to do for a whole year,
without a single solitary minute to do things that are not considered "Terribly
important". Yeah, I'm talking about Al Balkewicz.

It's annoying to talk about it but ya just gotta feel for Pat on this one.
For over a year he's been involved in a trade where the other partner, Al, has
been "too busy" to send his part of the deal to Pat for an entire YEAR.
    12 months. 365 days. 1 birthday.

In contrast, when I do dubs for people, I feel guilty if I don't get it out
the door in a couple of days! I guess some people are completely without
conscience. Al, if you're sick of having your name slammed on the net, I have
an idea: Be a man and send Pat his tape.

You're giving the 'Jam a very bad name. Especially by not saying anything.

I really like the idea of one person recording, sending it in, and then
combining all the tapes. It's like, you'd be playing with someone you've
never met!!! What if we all just recorded instruments of our choice
along with the Cd or something, then we could send the tapes into one
mixing guy, and he could do the rest from there? I think it would be
    cool & fun!

That's exactly how I feel. That's partly the reason I've been shying away
from doing any trades latey. I don't like being shafted. Also, I don't
have too much time on my hands, but rather than go back on my word, I
just don't offer to do trades. Simple enough.

Oh, he has; several times (though not lately) he kept saying things to me
like "I'll get your tape out by <x> date". I think this sort of behavior
makes him even a bigger horse's ass, and I guess it that he just doesn't

I've contacted my lawyer and I'll see you in court, buddy!
Anyway, don't forget new Pantera, maybe new Biohazard, maybe new Megadeth,
and (drum roll please, Ben Laussade this means you), NEW METALLICA :D

PS-don't quite know why Ben has to give a drum roll. Saw it in a jam about a
month ago and felt like saying it myself. Don't get PO'd, Ben :)

Edd, I have no problem. I think Derek has a lot of talent. Me and my friends
just have this feeling that he's gay. If you watch the Awake in japan video,
to me it sounds like when James introduces Derek, that guy in the crowd is
shouting "I like men", and hten they put the camera on Derek, he raises his
arm, and if you read his lips, it looks like he's saying "I'm a homo". Just a
    thought.
Bigman, read above. Derek has commited no evil. I just like to fool around a
little with the new guy (no, not in that sense, he'd probably like it HE HE
HE ;). II wold love to meet Derek or any member, and I would congradulate him
on making into the greatest band in the world. I'm not wondering if he will
fit in. I never thought he did. He doesn't have the look, and how old is he?
    FLAME AWAY!

PS-This is ment for jammers eyes only. Sorry to DS if he sees this.

Wrong. Metropolis isn't a moderated version of Ytsejam. It is only
about news concerning DT. And, to date, there haven't been any. I guess
receiving no messages would be better than receiving a lot of messages
about a stupid drinking game. Second, Metropolis is at arastar.com and
    not ax.com.

First and foremostly, DT rules! It occured to me that since this is a
relatively new mailing list, I'd better get back to saying that phrase
every now and then so I don't get anyone fuming about my lack of DT
content. I mean, since we're all newbies on a new list, the rite of
passage must be dealt with. I figure two or three more times, and then
hopefully I can be cleared to communicate freely with the other people on
this mailing list about similar hobbies or topics of popular interest.

How is it that SOOO many people saw Letterman that evening? For any who weren't in attendance, the top-ten list was "The Top Ten Lines Rejected For Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies." Read by Arnold himself. Such as:

"My, what a lovely laced-doily." "Do you have any Ouchless bandaids?" "Man oh man, do I love fudge!"

Were this guy to enter the Augie Olympics, he'd win at least the silver. (That's the Depression Olympics for those of you who haven't been on IRC with Augie) It turns out that our man Augie slipped this year, achieving the silver himself, with surprising newcomer Damon Fibraio rising to the challenge and grabbing the gold. Ben "Emotional Rollercoaster" Laussade, the lashing frenzy of whim and passion, took the bronze.

Here's an alternate solution....did his drum set have two bass pedals hooked up to one bass drum? Wait, you couldn't see behind his kit? Oh well... Perhaps the Auryn will know...
