Does anyone know how to get the JP sound without going out and shelling out
    $3000 for a Tri-Axis and a Mesa power-amp?, I have a Mesa DC-3 Combo and a
Peavey Rockmaster pre-amp, does anyone know how to tweak these things to
    acheive "the sound"?

On a different note, whats the bullshit about Sherinian sexuality, who
gives a fuck!, Ive been listening to Rush for years, even though Peart is gay.
and finally I must ask WHEN ARE DREAM THEATER GOING TO COME TO FLORIDA!!!!!, Ive
been waiting for 4 years and I cant seem to catch them........

And now for some CD reccomendations:
    1) Tony MacAlpine-"Evolution"-Prog/Classical/Rock/Jazz guitar with fretless basswizard: Tony Franklin (from the Firm, and Gary Hoey albums).
    2) Steve Vai-EVERYTHING
    3) Steve Morse-"Coast to coast"-great jazz/fusion guitars with amazing bass
playing by Dave Larue (Berklee grad)
    4) Al DiMeola-"Casino"-Latin prog music, john petrucci style is very reminiscentof Al Dimeolas.

and theres plenty of other good shit out there, so read magazines and check out
    some stuff.

BTW, I know this is a DT group, but does anyone have any Steve Vai bootleg (any
clinics, or show, or anything?)....welp lata

Hmm, I've been a lurker for a while (since the YJ on ax.com started) but here
are some things that I found a little interesting...

    The Great Ghost queries:
    > WHY ARE THERE SO MANY??!! How can you possibly read all these? I get 3
    > Ytsejams per every 1 of the other newsletters I subscribe to.
    >
This, Mr. Ghost, is due to the Jam not being moderated anymore. Anything that
anyone says comes right through. (like this post) Many people have posted
their feelings about the newly acquired freedom of the YJ since it has moved
over to ax.com. But has anyone ever thought about what a great service Ken was
doing while he gave up his time to sort through the 15 line .sig files? How
about the guy's mailbox that keeps sending back canned messages? You know, Mr.
RESPONSE at IBMMAIL. When Ken was moderating the list, you would have never
seen this. Why? Because he took the time to try and contact the remote side
and have the issue resolved. Ken asked for everyone to pitch in but no one
wanted to side with him because they were too busy screaming about "freedom of
speech". Ken wasn't trying to take it away but that is what was perceived. Now
everyone should be happy. Why aren't you?

Well, Mr. Mape, there is this freedom of speech thing that everyone here is so
hyped up on lately. But you too, have a voice and your "wondering" is shared
    by more than just yourself.

One reason is because it mentions the freedom of speech and we all know how
much we love that talk around here! :|

Don't get me wrong. There is some good info in all of this. The info about
Fates Warning, Trey's shirts and sweatshirts, etc. Those things I like to read
about. Even the thread of what would DT be like in 10 years...

Ew, is right. I don't think Derek has to resort to that sort of behavior to
    prove he's a tough guy.

I know, this will end up in the rubbish file for most of you but just
remember, all of us are now charged with the housekeeping on the YJ. We have a
long rope; let's not hang ourselves with it.

To Sir Cox: about the Birch Hill Show, tape tree, etc THANKS!!!!! This
stuff is great, as if I need to tell you that.....

To Mr. Anderson: Glad to see you're getting a replacement AD, good luck
wrestling the insurance company for reimbursement on the other stuff you
    lost.

To Mr. Adams: Would you really mind being that other Adams if it meant
success and no small wealth? Just curious.....

To the kid: I would have said "Grow up!", but it seems he's retracted
his statments re: Derek's sexuality....still and all, that kind of
comment is much better off being made in front of only a select group of
people whose reactions you might reasonably be able to predict....in
other words, sorta inappropriate for the jam, as mass flamage might have
    proved to you

    partha

p.s. 10 years later? I'm worried, because at this juncture of time, 10
years is a hell of a lifetime for a band....we're not talking old
standbys like rolling stones or rush here, we're talking DT, which is shedding
a band member almost every album....maybe my fears stem from the recent
example of echolyn's demise, but I'd actually bet against DT existing in
the year 2006.....and i'm not sure why, either

I just read on the jam that JP's dad passed away from cancer. As a
medical student, I thought I would pass on a bit of info about what
it seems he died from, lymphoma. Lymphoma is a tumor of the
lymphatic system. You know, when you get sick your mom feels under
your neck to see if "your glands are swollen." Well, what she is
really checking is to see if your lymph nodes are swollen. They get
swollen because it is in the lymphatic system that your body tries to
fight off viruses and stuff. When you get a tumor in one of these
lymph nodes, it is called a lymphoma. There are all different kinds
of lymphoma, for those of you who remember your highschool or college
biology classes. They can be B-cell lymphoma, T-cell lymphoma,
Hodgekin's lymphoma, and maybe some others which I am forgetting.
Anyway, the different cell types of lymphoma have different
prognoses. I don't know which type Mr.P had, but I hope this little
science lesson satisfied anyone's curiosity. Thanks for listening.

I would love to be a part of the Dream Theater tribute
album. I am a guitar player and have a real cool rig. John
Petrucci is my greatest influence. Someone E-mail me at
rbarker@epix.net and give me some more info about this thing.
I even know of a studio near Philadelphia that my friend owns
who would probably be interested in recording it. He also
owns an independent label and if he liked it he would press
    and distribute it.
Next question, how come every time I jump on the
#ytsejam IRC channel there is never anyone on it. Is it on a
special server or something. Someone please tell me how to
get on the thing. Cause I have had nothing but trouble.
    See ya, Rob

    Message-ID: <v01540b00ad59113ee0e3@bootp-234-126.bootp.virginia.edu>

What Petrucci really needs to do, just for the hell of it, is to try some
alternate guitar tunings-- not the dropped-D stuff (or dropped-A on the
7-string), but like Led Zep's DADGAD tuning or Soundgarden's Entirely
Fucked-Up Multiple tunings. (Ever hear "Fourth of July" by SG? It's so
evil-sounding-- they tune down to like a low G or something. The tonality
    basically disappears.)

I know there's still a whole lot you can do just with the standard tunings,
but if you experiment with the weird ones, it's like playing a whole new
instrument... you get all these weird overtones from the strings, and you
no longer have that familiar connection between notation and tab-- it
becomes more a game of where you place your fingers to fret chords, just
sounding out different things. It basically shoots musical theory straight
to hell, unless you really know your way around the guitar, to the extent
that you can easily figure out how a given chord will sound in a given
    tuning.

And if JP did use alternate tunings, yeah, it'd be tough to recreate in a
live setting if he wanted to solo (unless he feels up to the challenge of
soloing in a different tuning)... but I guess he'd just have to get himself
    a phat double-neck guitar.

I also read something in Keyboard magazine last year or so about altering
the tuning tables on keyboards to achieve a similar effect-- like, you'd be
playing a simple triad chord but it would sound totally unconventional; or
a blues-scale run that would sound like an entirely different scale (i.e.
half-tone intervals would not necessarily be set as half-tones; they could
both be the same note or a wider interval). But I've never been able to
figure out how to do this. It sounds really cool-- any of you other keys
players know how to do this, or whether it's any good?

I think the Idea of a Dream Theater tribute album done by
menbers of the YtseJam is a wonderful thing....

           There is one problem though...

If this thing is to take off....

we must come up with a coordinator.....

This person (is Mike Bahr already involved) ....
should compile the music....and then handle printing....
    and dubbing....

           Also...

anyone who contributed still must pay for their copy....
duplication shouldnt be absorbed by the coordinator...

Im interested in doing something....for the project...

Wedge (Digital Man), John (gandalf), Itz, Koba?????
    you guys interested???

If not....Im interested in doing a cut with any collaborator from
    Long Island......

Okay. Here I am in London, England hearing about how everyone is going to lay down some tracks for this DT tribute thing. My question is this: Is there anyone else in the area who's up for this? I'm a bassist and can play keys to a certain extent. I think this is a great opportunity and would love to be a part. So, come on London! Anyone interested can email me privately.

Ok, folks, hopefully this will clear up the IRC problems. I have configured a copy of mIRC v3.92 for specific use with irc.dreamt.org. You can download this from: http://www.phlab.missouri.edu/~c675311/mirc.html It's important that you go *directly* to the page, because I'm not linking it to my DT page. If you have winsock or a ISP, you can run this program, and it is configured to offer you the least trouble. I have further instructions on my page and in a text file included with the program. I hope this helps out all of you who have had trouble.

If you already use IRC, but don't have mIRC, I highly recommend that you get this. It's the best IRC client I have seen.

Yeah I'd have to agree with Neil Gallop on this one. "RESPONSE at IBMMAIL" would have to be the King! As far as a queen goes...with all the talk about Derek..... Only kidding!:) Derek if you're reading this, I would never question your sexuality. To be honest, I couldn't care less. Although I still think you look a little bit like Jon Lovitz albeit thinner.

    >p.s. 10 years later? I'm worried, because at this juncture of time, 10 >years is a hell of a lifetime for a band....we're not talking old >standbys like rolling stones or rush here, we're talking DT, which is >shedding >a band member almost every album....maybe my fears stem from the recent >example of echolyn's demise, but I'd actually bet against DT existing in >the year 2006.....and i'm not sure why, either

I have a few of the same fears...but when you consider how long they HAVE been together with so few replacements...I think that they will still be around.

    >I think that about four or five years from now Dream Theater will be what >Nirvana was about four or five years ago. That is to say, everyone will >be "discovering" prog-rock-metal-whatever because EastWest smelled the >coffee and did a little promotion. And what they will be discovering is >the new DT single, much the same way that "Teen Spirit" broke open the >grunge scene. However, I also think that Dream Theater is going to ride >the crest of that wave for a long time and not die out like Nirvana did. >Rather, I see all the prog bands like DT, Fates, Shadow Gallery, etc., >helping each other out. As for us, we'll still be around, 'jamming like >always. Except some of us will probably be teleconferencing, instead of >reading e-mail. And we'll probably be watching the band on this infernal >metal box as well.

I agree in part...but I just have a feeling that the !@$#$ idiots in radio programming have it in for prog rock...and will have it in for it until and unless progressive groups sell out to the 4 minute format. 20 minute masterpieces don't leave much room for commercials, doncha' know. The way I see it going is that Dream Theater will remain true to form...so it will be up to other bands to make prog rock a little bit more radio friendly. The "radio friendly" groups will turn more and more people on to progressive rock which will open the way for radio stations to start introducing better formats. THEN Dream Theater will shine. If Dream Theater keeps it together and sticks it out....I think they might actually achieve the status of RUSH....IMHO. :)
