What if Weird Al spoofed an instrumental? I can hear "Beerotomania" now,
complete with accordion, banjo, sitar, bassoon, mellotron, ukulele,
a (Chapman) Stick (sorry Chris), glockenspiel, and the Ytsejam Big Band
Brass.

Another Matt reference...I thought Prague was in the Czech Republic. I also
thought they spoke Czech in the Czech Republic, not German. Maybe
there's a Prague, Germany...
>>They've only had on line up change since 1976 and it doesn't look like

>Oh really....what about RUSH, The Rolling Stones, U2...etc?
The Rolling Stones have had more than one line-up change. They originally
had Brian Jones on guitar, Ian Stewart on piano, and Bill Wyman on bass.
The first 'real' personnel change took place with the dismissal of
Brian Jones in 1969, who died several weeks later. Jones' slot was filled
by a young guitarist named Mick Taylor until December 1974. Ron Wood
became a full member by the end of 1975. In 1993, bassist Bill Wyman
officially quit after years of rumors and speculation. Daryl Jones, who
played with Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, Sting, and more, played
bass on the 1994/95 'Voodoo Lounge' tour, and on much of the 'VL' album.

>progressive rock has always been, and always should be, 'underground' music.
Awake went platinum in Japan, not here in the States. How can DT be
"discovered" by a record exec if they already have a label? If
progressive rock "always should be 'underground'" just to appease the
fans, then the fans are extremely selfish. I don't understand how people
would want DT and other groups to remain small (i.e. not opening for a
potential Rush tour) just to have a sense of intimacy. DT makes music
for a living. They, like everybody else, have bills to pay. I would
rather have DT become bigger without sacrificing their musical and
artistic integrity than have DT remain the same and stay "underground."
Just because an artist is popular or mainstream doesn't mean that the
artist is "selling out." All artists are commercial. Commercial in the
sense that they make a product (an album) for their record companies to
sell to the masses. Unless the artist uses some of the profits to cover
the recording costs and gives the rest of the profits away, all artists are
commercial. One of my favorite bands, King's X, is at a pivotal point.
They literally need to do well on their forthcoming album in order to
continue. I remain optimistic to their future, but it's a future I see
applicable to DT also. So, as I have said before, get out those
postcards and start mailing them...
Sincerely,
G. Jack Thetgyi

Anyone who was on the old Ytsejam MIGHT remember that I I'm taking an
introductory music course right now. Well, I got the highest grade on the
first exam, but that's not the point I want to make (though I felt like
saying that anyway <G>). Today were talking about Franz Liszt, a virtuoso
composer from early 19th century (known as the Romantic period in music
history). He wrote piano pieces that were so complex hardly anyone
besides himself could play them. hardly any musician TODAY can play them.
What I'd like to know is can Kevin Moore and Derik Sherrinian play these
difficult compostions by Liszt? Have they even TRIED? I bet they could.
Also, were discussing what a virtuoso is (that's a musician who can play
incredibly complex music which few other musicians can play). The first
two names that came to mind for me were John Petrucci and Neil Peart
(who, BTW is NOT gay).
Now, let's do some responding:

Sure, I can see that happening. The healing music of Dream Theater will
be the wave of the future! BTW, it's spelled SCHIZOPHRENIA. I should
know. I'm a psychology major. :) Just don't get me started about people
who mistake multiple personality disorder for schizophrenia...
I don't know if my last joke message got through responding to this one
since I wasn't subscribed to the jam at the time, so here it is again. My
apologies if you had to sit through this corny joke twice. BTW, I
unsubscribed for a little while because I went on vacation for a week and
I didn't want mail piling up.

Okay, here goes. I now have the overwhelming urge to listen to a certain
20-mintue epic song on a certain CD in which the album was released when
I was one year old by a band who's drummer is not gay.
Actually, I added some stuff into that one in lieu of the recent
discussion.

the moment is Genesis. When I say Genesis, I mean from their first
album (Foxtrot, I think) to Seconds Out (their 1977 live double album).
During Feb. Tower Records had all mid line cd's on sale, and since
Atlantic remastered all the old LP's, I wnet a little crazy and ended
up with all the Gabriel/Hackett stuff. This stuff f**king rules! It's
what I would call true Progressive music. It is by far [imo] the best
prog music I've ever heard, including ELP or Yes. If you're looking for
some great prog music, you can't go wrong with early Genesis.
I heard something today that made me lose all respect for KISS.
When Eric Carr got sick from Brain Cancer, Gene & Paul fired him and
removed him from their insurance so they didn't have to pay the higher
premiums. What guys, eh. Here's a guy who had some pretty big shoes to
fill in Peter Criss, stayed with them for over 10 years (longer than
Peter was in the band), even through all the lean years when KISS was
struggling, and that's how they say thank you. Some loyalty.
Anyway, I had to get that off my chest. I can't wait to hear the
Rush show Mike Bahr's putting out this spring. I've heard a few
different shows from this tour and they all sounded like shit. It'll be
great to have a soundboard show. Mike, you rule!

Okay guys, it appears we have a tuba, a trombone, a clarinet, a trumpet, and a flute/piccolo (me). There has got to be something we can do. I am honestly interested if anyone can come up with anything. Please don't suggest singing, I am assuming by the fact that no one mentioned it that that is out of the question for us. I hate to have commented on this thread but I can't help. IMO, whether DT is actually attractive is unimportant. Personaly, if I am appreciating what they do, they are automatically very attractive. I will admit the fact that I think they are good looking, James in particular, helps but I think the main reason people are attracted to them (at least for me) is a genuine respect for them, not so much their appearance. Wouldn't it be nice if it were true everywhere in the world?

MillerA@act.org Once Wrote: my worst nightmare would come true if copy-cat bands were to form in the progressive genre. well, i can't imagine anyone trying to copy DT. you may be able to learn their songs, but try writing a piece on the same level as metropolis. (yeah, right)
anyway, i don't think mainstream society is ready for progressive music, and it never will be. i say this because of what people are listening to. (pop-country, rap, pop, sh*t, cheezy sh*t, etc.) these people aren't ready to hear lyrics with the depth of 'voices', or 'uagm', or whatever. there's no sense singling out any song, all of them are 'deep'.
But isnt Prog. Music all Copycat? IMHO they all sound the same. Somewhat like Alternative... But then again I guess that's what appeals to the music... DT could be back on top of the charts But MTV wont let it right now.. :)

AFAIK they released at least two albums. Not easy to find here, I think their stuff is totally out of print. If sombody's interested: They contributed a bit of music to the movie "Wild at Heart" (kinda road-movie with Nicolas Cage). It's also on the soundtrack.

Hello guys and gals--
I just wanted to address this prog popularity thread. It's never going to happen and there are a few reasons.
1) Prog is too generally too long. This has been mentioned before and it's a very valid point. Mtv can't play prog and neither can radio. Sure, Rush can fit in, but how many of you would categorize that last few Rush albums and progressive as I&W or Awake? "Stick It Out" vs "Scarred"? Don't think so.
2) Most of us are musicians or people who really get into our music. I'm not saying musicians can't get into alternative and other forms of music, but I'm not sure that people who just listen to the radio in there car can get into prog. It's kind of like this analogy: DT can play almost any style of music, but Hole can't play prog. I'm not saying that DT isn't catchy or anything, but most of us appreciate these songs on so many different levels. Now I probably sound like some intellectual snob or something. (I'm not really. I thought Coolio kick ass on the Grammy's last night!)
3) Well, there is no three.
Also, for those of you who haven't heard Jason Becker's _Perspective_ album yet, do you yourself a favor and get it. It has some great guitar work by Becker and Firkins and all the songs are really well written. He throws in some interesting styles and a lot of classical ideas. Very cool.
Thanks for listening to my waste of bandwidth, Sean Haider
